People like to say, “It’s never too early” to do something, but that’s not always true. For example, it’s too early to predict next year’s Academy Awards before this year’s Academy Awards. But the 2025 Oscars are over, so now it’s time to start making predictions about what films will contend for the Oscars next year.
It’s already looking like the 98th Academy Awards will have a stronger field than the 97th. Blue chip filmmakers are returning from long breaks with exciting casts in tow. Each Safdie brother has their own A24 sports drama. There’s a new Avatar movie. It’s going to be an exciting, unpredictable year.
Here are 25 films likely to contend for 2026 Academy Award nominations in many different categories, not just Best Picture. Some of them are locks, some are long shots, and some will peter out entirely, replaced in...

In this fantasy-satire of bourgeois family life, a girl is suddenly able to see everything her messed-up parents are up to
Here is a high-concept satire of bourgeois family life with all its secrets and lies from German film-maker Frédéric Hambalek; it is something to remind you of the notorious Babel fish in Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which you can put in your ear and then comprehend what any creature in the universe is saying — a miraculous promotion of pure understanding which has been the cause of more and bloodier wars than anything else.
Marielle (Laeni Geiseler) is a moody and withdrawn teenager with messed-up parents. Her mum is Julia and dad is Tobias (Felix Kramer). Julia is on the verge of a furtive affair with work colleague Max (Mehmet Ateşçi) while Tobias is being turned into a beta-male joke at his publishing company – his...

Subhash K Jha revisits Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq, which was released 18 years ago!
To be able to direct a film starring, hold your breath, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna, Govinda, etc etc for a sophomore director must have seemed like an ache-walk.
Recalls Nikhil, “It was a cakewalk. Every actor went out of the way to accommodate my film. Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra were there for me, and they were not only in their segment. Govinda was like a dream. He was on the sets on the dot and embarrassingly apologetic if he was a few minutes late.”
In fact, initially, the second-time director – who made his debut with Kal Ho Naa Ho – was petrified about how to handle the vast cast. “No actor gave me any grief. To watch these actors before the camera was an amazing experience. I...

Hollywood might be the United States of America, but when it comes to talent it sure is not limited to the country. Actors, writers, filmmakers, and more have for years graced the film industry with their remarkable talents.
However, not all have managed to make a mark as some have. The Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu is certainly one who has not only shocked audiences and critics with his mind-bending films but has also gone on to earn five Academy Awards as well as a Special Achievement Academy Award for his virtual reality work Carne y Arena.

Marvel and Disney movies repeatedly present reliable narratives that clearly tell audiences what they should take away from a story. They go from beginning to end, asking questions and always giving answers — a comfort to moviegoers who just want to be entertained. When films like Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) leave viewers wondering about what its ending truly means, the lack of explanation often results in passionate, years-long debate.
Acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu, best known for The Revenant and Babel, didn't hold back while developing this Oscar-winning dark comedy. With Beetlejuice's Michael Keaton in the titular role, the rest of the film's cast is equally stacked, including Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough, and Zach Galifianakis.
The story instantly yanks audiences into the erratic world of Riggan Thomson, a washed-up actor haunted by his blockbuster-superhero past: a character named Birdman. While leading up to his Broadway debut,...

There are no known recordings of Frida Kahlo’s voice. But the iconic painter, who died in 1954, tells her own story in director Carla Gutiérrez’s documentary “Frida,” which is guided by her words (spoken by actress Fernanda Echevarría) from interviews, essays and diaries.
Acclaimed for its semi-animated visual strategy, the film (available on Amazon Prime) is also a sensory aural experience, propelled by a passionate, rhapsodic score by Victor Hernández Stumpfhauser. The Burbank-based, Mexican-born conductor and songwriter’s credits include features, shorts and three compositions on the “Birdman” soundtrack.
For the documentary, he said, “I thought of the music as Frida’s inner voice, sort of like her spirit. We think of Frida as very strong, loud, rebellious, which is an important part of her, but I wanted the music to also relate to the vulnerable, intimate side of her personality. Rodrigo Prieto was on double duty at Camerimage.
This year the veteran Camerimage Golden Frog winner sat on the international competition jury alongside Cate Blanchett. Away from official jury duties, however, Prieto was around town screening and promoting Pedro Páramo, the thrilling and elusive film he has directed for Netflix.
Pedro Páramo is Prieto’s directorial feature debut. Born and raised in Mexico, Prieto is best known as the DoP who lensed a series of now-celebrated features that shaped the early 2000’s renaissance of Mexican cinema like Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros. In fact, much of the prep on Pedro Páramo took place while Prieto was photographing two of last year’s biggest movies, Greta Gerwig’s existential hit Barbie and Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic Killers Of The Flower Moon.

Sarah J. Maas is one author who has capitalized on the newfound popularity of the fantasy-romance genre with A Court of Thorns and Roses. The enchanting blend of epic fantasy worlds and swoon-worthy romance has turned romantasy into an unstoppable industry, captivating readers and skyrocketing in popularity over the past decade. While many romantasy authors write about Fae characters, none quite capture the unique charm of Acotar, and none adequately quell the popular demand for the next Acotar book, which seems to be the most highly-anticipated upcoming release of the genre.

It's almost impossible for a fantasy book to not include any tropes or rely on formula, but some authors push themselves to defy expectations and subvert the genre. While there's a reason that tropes are popular, such as the hero's journey and the sword and sorcery formulas, those aspects of these narratives are so synonymous that the time has come for authors to break with tradition. Of course, writers must understand the rules of fantasy to challenge them, so this leads to a deep love of the genre that can be found in so many of these creative works.
Many of these fantasy books have shocking plot twists that readers don't see coming. While a successful twist isn't the only mark of a good book, it does show that the writers understand how to work both within and without the fantasy format. Settings, characters, and plot developments must all work in harmony within the narrative,...

For the past few weeks, I have been watching stuff that is intentionally and confidently convoluted in an attempt to make it seem like the story is complex, even though it’s clearly not. It’s not like I am voluntarily picking out these projects. They’re all chosen randomly so that they can be covered during the week of their release. And despite the unmethodical nature of the choices, if a pattern shows up, then I think it’s a trend. Joker: Folie à Deux seemed like an ending explainer for the previous movie, but it alternated between what’s real and what’s not in the dumbest fashion imaginable. Teacup was like a wannabe From, which itself was a confounding trip. The Last Night at Tremore Beach was infuriating and baffling. The Man Who Loved UFOs, despite being a biography, was a whole lot of nothing. Then there was Caddo Lake,...

While magical realism fiction may now be a familiar genre for many readers, its origins can be traced back to a single groundbreaking novel from 1955, Pedro Páramo by Mexican author Juan Rulfo.
The story tells of a man named Juan Preciado who journeys to a mysterious abandoned town in search of his dead father, only to find the place inhabited by spirits of people from generations past. Rulfo pioneered a style that blended everyday details with hallucinatory elements, forever changing the landscape of Latin American literature.
Many years later, the visionary director of photography Rodrigo Prieto set out to bring Rulfo’s masterpiece to the screen for his directorial debut. Prieto is no stranger to vivid, transportive worlds, having lensed visually stunning films like Babel and Silence.
Stepping behind the camera for Pedro Páramo, he aimed to faithfully recreate the unsettling, disorienting atmosphere that marked Rulfo’s prose. The result was this haunting film,...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival got off to a memorably splashy start Monday night with the world premiere of filmmaker Shiraishi Kazuya’s frenetic and wildly bloody samurai action flick 11 Rebels.
In recent years, Japan’s preeminent cinema event has been attempting to revitalize and rebrand itself as a not-to-be-missed cultural occasion in the Asia-Pacific region. After years of organizational drift, the festival, under the leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando, is on a mission to boost its reach and reputation into something more commensurate with the country’s powerful cinematic past and the ever-growing appeal of Japanese culture around the globe.
In that sense, 11 Rebels was perhaps the perfect pick for this year’s opening gala screening. A throw-back samurai slasher, the film is based on a decades-old screenplay by the late, great scriptwriter Kasahara Kazuo, best known for his cult classic yakuza film Battles Without Honor and Humanity...

Although its been a while since the last update on Wes Balls The Legend of Zelda movie, the movie is still set for production and aims to bring the beloved Nintendo game series to the big screen in live-action. There havent been any casting announcements yet, which has allowed fans of the original games to wildly speculate about which popular actresses could be suitable candidates for the titular role. Unsurprisingly, Princess Zelda plays an enormous role in the games (and likely the movie), so its important that her actress is somebody with a strong physical and behavioral resemblance.
Following the enormous success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, theres finally reason to believe that The Legend of Zelda can overcome the video game movie curse. The subgenre has famously failed time and time again, with countless directors not managing to capture the magic of video games on the big screen.

Cate Blanchett — so beloved by this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival that she was featured on the event’s official poster — was sent a sentimental video message by fellow actor George Clooney as she accepted her Donostia Award Saturday night.
The Australian star, known for her roles in films such as The Aviator, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and more recently, the Oscar-nominated Tár, was recognized on the Spanish coast for her achievements in film.
“Fucking George!” Blanchett remarked as she wiped away mascara following her standing ovation at San Sebastian’s Kursaal Theater. Clooney had said in the video: “I want to say that there’s acting as a profession, and then there’s acting as an art, and we recognize that art… I’ve been lucky enough to direct you and to act with you, and you always make everyone around you feel lucky that we...

One of the most exciting filmmaking talents to come out of Mexico in the 21st century has been Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu. He had an incredible surge in his career during the 2010s directing two of the decades best films, two films that showed his ability to craft both brazenly original and startlingly brutal stories: 2014s Birdman and 2015s The Revenant (both of which took home multiple Academy Awards). While these two films may have garnered him more mainstream attention, before them, he had already had a storied career, with highly acclaimed outings like 21 Grams and Babel.

When Alfonso Cuarón approached Apple with his idea of turning Renée Knight’s 2015 novel “Disclaimer” into a five-and-a-half-hour psychological thriller, he was very clear about one thing. “I don’t know [how] to do television.”
“For me, it’s a bit too late in the game to start learning,” he says, thinking back to that initial pitch as he prepares to screen “Disclaimer” at the Toronto Film Festival following its acclaimed debut at Venice. Instead, Cuarón says he and stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen opted to “approach it in the way that I do a film.”
And there were precedents that he points to in cinema history for this kind of sprawling, narratively dense work; “Reds,” “1900,” “Fanny and Alexander,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” even “Twin Peaks” served as inspirations for what he was hoping to pull off. Many of those films were set in the past,...

“Pedro Páramo” is not the kind of movie you’d expect to be the directorial debut of the cinematographer who shot “Barbie” — unless you know that that cinematographer, Rodrigo Prieto, also shot “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Silence,” “Babel,” “21 Grams” and many other films that studiously avoid hot pink in any and all forms.
Rodrigo has been one of the most prolific and adventurous cinematographers of recent years, and if he’s drawing inspiration from any of the directors he worked for, it’s probably Iñárritu. “Pedro Páramo,” which had its world premiere on Saturday at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, carries echoes of “Bardo” in the fact that it is simultaneously personal and mystical.

Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.

An upcoming movie starring Tom Cruise has arguably the best ensemble cast of the celebrated actor's entire career. After maintaining his status as one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and the face of several massive action franchises such as Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Cruise will be looking to take on more dramatic roles with experienced directors. Cruise recently signed a major deal with Warner Bros. which brings about all sorts of possibilities for sequels and original content.
Cruise had originally starred in more traditional dramas, comedies, and other genre films outside of action during his meteoric rise in Hollywood over the years. He made his feature film debut in the tragic romantic drama Endless Love (1981) before rising to prominence as the star of Risky Business (1983), The Color of Money (1986), and of course, the original Top Gun (1986). The Joe and Anthony Russo-backed production company Agbo has announced the return of the fourth consecutive “No Sleep ‘Till Film Fest.”
The two-day festival challenges participants to make films that are three minutes or less for a chance to win prizes and receive ongoing mentorship from the independent studio.
The top three winners receive a filmmaking prize package with essential resources and “best-in-class” equipment for future filmmaking opportunities. They will also join the Agbo Storytellers Collective, an alumni network of winners from other Agbo-sponsored festivals and fellowship programs such as the Russo Brothers Italian American Filmmaker Forum and the Slamdance Film Festival Fellowship — the same festival the Russos received their start at in 1997 as emerging filmmakers.
In the past three years of the festival, “No Sleep ’til Film Fest” received over 2000 submissions from over 60 countries. 2023 winners included “Time of Your Life” directed by Darren Hinchy (Canada), “Just a Sec!

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tom Cruise will be starring in the new film from director Alejandro Iñárritu for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, with this being Iñárritu’s first English language movie since The Revenant, which hit theatres back in 2015. Now Deadline has revealed the names of six of Cruise’s co-stars, breaking the news that he has been joined in the cast by John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name), with Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) in final negotiations to join in as well. Details on the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps.
This will be Cruise’s first time working with all of these actors except for Plemons. Cruise and Plemons were in the 2017 film American Made together.

Almost 23 years ago, David Fincher released a film that even he was not confident would succeed. The movie included such violent, gory, and disturbing scenes that audiences would flee the hall in abhorrence. Ultimately, the movie tanked at the box office, but shockingly, the makers and actors were still satisfied.
Fight Club was released in 1999 and is now regarded as one of the must-watch movies. It’s mature themes, explicit language, and uncomfortable topics were not something that the older generation could swallow. But the actors and filmmakers buckled up to show their creative genius, irrespective of the hate they received. Lead actor Brad Pitt thinks the reception they got from the ‘Baby Boomers’ was justified.
