As I write this review of a 2005 film being watched in 2020, it is remarkable how much our world has changed and evolved. We hardly think twice about a child having two fathers, which was something of a scandal 15 years ago. The film surprised me in the best ways. For an independent film on a small budget, it it shot well with strong performances and a gripping story. Nina Kaczorowski is incredibly good as a dying mother wanting the best for her young son through her ex, played by Steve Hasley, and his long time boyfriend Peter (Derek Maki). Steve and Derek have lovely chemistry, and Steve grounds the film with a natural performance while Maki provides excellent comic relief and foil to Steve. The film's events are moving to anyone watching, and feature good locations in California. All in all, this is a wonderful independent film with a passionate and talented director/writer/producer in Maki. I only wish we could see the film now through a 2020 lense. Kudos to all involved. I would recommend this film to anyone especially indie fans, LGBTQ, and people needing a good family story!
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. A real heart tugger of a movie with some wonderful comedic moments and some great one liners. The antics of Derek Maki as Peter really made the film. He delivers some really fun lines with quick precision. Stephen, Nina and Dominic were well cast in their roles. The supporting cast of moms and friends were fun and poignant. There were many clever situations in this movie where these richly created characters were able to move through in very interesting ways. It kept my mind busy throughout, mainly to ask the question, "What will Peter do next?" That character really drove the film. In a world of million dollar movies and big name stars, it's nice to see a really competent picture come out of a small budget. A very rewarding experience.
Director, writer, actor Derek Maki Has create a fantastic heart warming story of Love. A True independent film it is a little grainy at spots but the story and the acting obscures any and all flaws.
The story proves that Love is Love . It shows a different family from the American traditional view facing a tragedy and letting love over come it.
As his first feature film we can truly expect to see much more from this man. He has set his aims high and I believe went way beyond all expectations in this film.
Great movie for the whole family.
