It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

There are so many sub-genres in horror. The vampire movie, zombie apocalypses, torture porn. But there's nothing more classic and purely fright-inducing than the things that go bump in the night. To celebrate this week's release of The Invoking, we bring you our Top 13 Favorite Haunted House Movies.
Is anything creepier than when your own house turns against you? You can (theoretically) get away from zombies, vamps, slashers and werewolves. But when your own home sweet home is the enemy… it's tough to recover from that.
We have some great Honorable Mentions to start off with. Fantastic director James Wan really seems to have a knack for the haunted house movie as he has one entry on the list itself and also gets a nod for Insidious, a creative look at the inner, an outer, workings of a haunted house. A Haunting in Connecticut was impressive as, in addition to the actual haunting going on,...

Lionsgate has released the first trailer and picture for the upcoming supernatural thriller The Quiet Ones, which as being sold as being inspired by true events, telling the story of an unorthodox, but charismatic professor who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy. Directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal) and starring Jared Harris, Sam Claflin, Erin Richards, Rory Fleck-Byrne and Olivia Cooke the film is set to hit theaters on April 25 and was one of my most anticipated of 2014, but after checking out the very end of this trailer it looks like they are stealing the "goo out of the mouth" thing straight from A Haunting in Connecticut. I don't really like that, but we'll see. Check out the trailer, the first picture and the official synopsis below. A university...

When a horror film sports the tagline "Based on" or "Inspired by actual events," the terror quotient almost always goes up, and the films often do big box office numbers. A great recent example of this phenomenon is The Conjuring, which cleaned up during its theatrical run this Summer. The idea that the film we are about to watch is rooted in some level of truth makes the film experience more intense; even if the plot is 99% fiction, the experience is still enriched by the knowledge that there is even a shred of truth to what you are about to witness. Back in March, we ran a piece showcasing ten terrifying movies based on actual events, and due to positive reader response, we're now proud to bring you ten more horror films that take a cue from reality. A Haunting in Connecticut This 2009 film is inspired by the experience of the Snedeker family,...

The haunted house subgenre has been a horror mainstay for years, and it's alive and well to this day. The Conjuring cleaned up at the box office, proving that audiences are still just as interested in disturbing domiciles as ever. In haunted house films, the location is just as important, if not more so, than the human inhabitants, and as a general rule, the less inviting the house appears on screen, the greater the potential for malady... although as you'll see, that's not always the case. While we wholeheartedly enjoy a good horror film, we would be more than a little reluctant to settle down (or even spend one night) in any of the homes featured in our favorite haunted house flicks. Below, behold eight houses we would most certainly not want to live in... The Freeling's House in Poltergeist As a general rule, building a home atop an occupied...

It wasn't just viewers who were scared out of their wits by "The Conjuring" this weekend; it was the big studios as well (save perhaps Warner Bros., which released "The Conjuring"). After all, this summer has seen several supposedly surefire blockbusters -- movies with big stars, big action sequences, and big fan bases from previous installments -- do big belly flops at the multiplex. (That includes Warners' own "The Hangover Part III.") And then here comes a horror flick with a modest budget (just $20 million), a restrictive R rating, no big names, no familiar title from a pre-existing property, and it opens at No. 1 with an estimated $41.5 million, setting a record for an original R-rated horror movie. And this on a weekend with three other wide-release movies opening, all of them more heavily touted.

After attending “The Walking Dead” roundtables at the Sdcc, we came away with some casting news we hadn't heard yet, a few inklings of what's in store for fans of the show come October, and a bit more info about the tone of Season 4.
First to join our table were new showrunner Scott Gimple, comics creator Robert Kirkman, and the dreaded Governor himself, David Morrissey. If you watched the new Season 4 trailer (and if you didn't, do so immediately – we'll wait) and have also read the comics, you probably noticed a lot of elements from them in the footage. Gimple's philosophy in that regard is to incorporate big moments from the source material with different characters and different contexts but keep them recognizable. They have to change, of course, due to the fact that we have characters who are now dead but still living in the comics and vice versa...

The haunted house movie is a genre nearly as old as film itself, and one that, much like its typical subject, hasn’t undergone much renovation. While technological advances (Steadicam, home video), trends (“found footage”, true crime) and tweaks to the basic format have brought us a few variations in make and model over the past 100 or so years, the basic idea is always the same: people move into a place where bad things happened, and bad things start happening to them.
It’s a story that we’ve all seen dozens, if not hundreds, of times. So when a haunted house film comes along that is able to tell us what we already know in a way that still gets under our skin, it is both a admirable achievement and a deliciously thrilling excuse to get the living shit scared out of you with a bunch of shrieking strangers.

The new horror film The Conjuring from Saw and Insidious director James Wan doesn't hit theaters until Friday, but the buzz has been more than positive, with test screenings knocking it out of the park, and reviews following the premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival being overwhelmingly positive. Some are calling it the most terrifying studio horror film in years, and New Line is paying close attention and planning ahead as Variety reports the Warner Bros. based studio is already developing a sequel. But since the film is based on the real-life account of a pair of paranormal investigators, how will the sequel play out? Well, without spoiling the first film, a sequel would merely focus on another investigation conducted by The Warrens. Films like The Amityville Horror and A Haunting in Connecticut are based on their files, so a franchise from their paranormal work wouldn't be surprising. New...

Why not just call The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia by its more obvious title: Ghosts of Georgia? Why rely on the Haunting in Connecticut name? It's like they have no faith in horror fans to seek it out on its own merits, and instead they're calling us stupid by naming it this. I'm almost offended by it. But then I see that Chad Michael Murray is in it, so my disappointment washes away. I like to refer to him as Chad Michael Dreamboat, for the record. Katee Sackhoff (whose name never fails to make me giggle) also stars in A Haunting in Connecticut 2, and she's not the kind of girl who should ever smile. That may sound weird, but when Sackhoff is in something as dour and dark as Battlestar Galactica, seeing her go for laughs on something like Big Bang Theory or play light comic relief...

Director: Tom Elkins. Writer: David Coggeshall. Cast: Abigail Spencer, Morgana Shaw, Emily Alyn Lind, Chad Michael Murray, Grant James, and Katee Sackhoff. The first thing people notice about The Haunting in Connecticut: Ghosts of Georgia is its unwieldy title. This title is obscenely long and it offers contradictory information. A sequel to the 2009 film A Haunting in Connecticut, this second film deals with a family moving into a new house. Obviously, spirits reside there. And, this is Tom Elkins first film as director. As well, many of the producers from the first film (Paul Brooks, Jeff Levine) return for this next entry. The crew brings together a competent production, which is dramatically driven by David Coggeshall's compelling script. There is a lot to take in with Ghosts of Georgia and horror fans will find lots to enjoy with this piece. The supposed true story begins with the Wyrick family.

"Suburgatory" star Jane Levy will star in a pretty freaky movie. In a Dark Place is about an American nanny who is brought to London to babysit a doll. The family that brings her in treat the doll like their real son and expect her to do the same. It sounds like a comedy but it's not, it's a psychological thriller. Gold Circle, the production company which made Pitch Perfect and A Haunting in Connecticut, is behind the movie.
Levy, who played Victoria Justice's best friend in Fun Size, has also signed on to star in the remake of Evil Dead.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia. Straight from the title card, this movie is a mess.
A “sister” film to the moderately successful A Haunting in Connecticut has been in the works for a while [Editor's note: Once it was a directing vehicle for Ti West who bailed out.], debuting now four years after the original.
The movie tells the story of the Wyrick family, who move to a seemingly perfect little cabin tucked away in the backwoods of Southern Georgia. We quickly discover that Andy’s wife Lisa is in touch with the spiritual world, she possesses a ‘veil’, a gift that allows to her to interact and see with the other side. It seems that this gift is shared with her sister Joyce and passed along to her daughter Heidi, and because of it, they uncover a century old secret that unearths some ghostly presence as well.

According to an update from Deadline.com, Mark Duplass (Zero Dark Thirty) has joined the cast of Mercy, the film adaptation of Stephen King's skin-crawling Skeleton Crew short story "Gramma," about two boys and their creepy bed-ridden grandmother, who turns out to have occult powers. The story, which is loosely tied to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, was previously adapted by accclaimed author Harlan Ellison for the '80s Twilight Zone series, but this will be the first feature-length version. "Gramma" was adapted for the screen by writer Matt Greenberg (who previously adapted King's 1408) and directed by Peter Cornwell (A Haunting In Connecticut). Duplass will co-star with Dylan McDermott (American Horror Story), Frances O’Connor, Chandler Riggs, Joel Courtney, Shirley Knight and Chris Browning. The film is tentatively slated for a 2014 release.

Another short story from Stephen King’s 1985 collection Skeleton Crew is headed for the big screen. Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead) has signed to Gramma, and is playing young, Georgie, who has to take care of his ill grandmother when his mother needs to venture to a hospital to see her other son, who has broken a leg. It seems the old lady is a wirtch. Gramma was adapted once before as an episode of the New Twilight Zone back in 1986 with a screenplay by legendary author Harlan Ellison. Peter Cornwell (A Haunting in Connecticut) is directing this new take, now called Mercy, based on a screenplay by Matt Greenberg. The film will also star Mark Duplass, Dylan McDermott, Francis O’Connor, Shirley Knight, and Super 8’s Joel Courtney.

Joined by Lisa’s free-spirited sister, Joyce (Katee Sackhoff, TV’s Battlestar Galactica), the family soon comes face-to-face with a bone-chilling mystery born of a deranged desire…a haunting secret rising from underground and...

It would appear Lionsgate and Gold Circle may be going straight-to-video or with an On Demand release of The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghost of Georgia as this first look trailer doesn't seem to want to make any kind of theatrical commitment. The film is a sequel to the 2009 mezzo-mezzo supernatural horror purporting to be based on a true story in which a cancer-afflicted teen starts seeing things in the new Victorian house he and his family moved into. For as scary as the film tried to be, all it really was was a series of jump scares and I would bet this sequel won't be much different. Here's the official synopsis: Building on the terror of A Haunting in Connecticut, this horrifying tale traces a young family's nightmarish descent into a centuries-old Southern hell. When Andy Wyrick (Chad Michael Murray, House of Wax) moves his wife Lisa (Abigail Spencer,...

The first trailer has been released for The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia. It may not look like the best horror movie, but as a fan of the genre I'll check it out. I'll watch almost anything when it comes to horror; good and bad. Of course it's always a plus for me when the film turns out to be great! I liked the first movie and the sequel looks like it will have its moments. You also can't go wrong with a red-headed Katee Sackoff!
Synopsis:
A young family is tormented by the horrors of the past in The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, a chilling new film based on a true story from the producers of The Haunting in Connecticut.

I did not see The Haunting in Connecticut, so maybe this is a question that has an answer within that film... but what kind of title is The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia? Why on earth would you have a "sequel" to a film set in - and titled - "Connecticut," but then have the sequel set in - and subtitled - "Georgia?" Wouldn't it just be easier to call it The Haunting in Georgia and tag it with, "From the producers of The Haunting in Connecticut?"
Okay, so there are ghosts in Georgia now, of those that died along the Underground Railroad. We've got the spooky trailer, one-sheet, and official synopsis for you. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia gets a VOD and limited theatrical release on February 1st. I'm still waiting for word on The Haunting in Connecticut 3: Georgia Does Dallas.

Jason Blum has got a case of Stephen King fever – which is great news for horror fans. We reported last week that the producer had scored the rights to adapt King’s The Breathing Method (the last unfilmed story from the author’s novella collection Different Seasons) and today brings news that he’s also landed the rights to “Gramma” – one of the short stories featured in King's collection Skeleton Crew. The story will be retitled Mercy, after one of the story’s central characters. The tale revolves around two young boys who go with their mother to take care of their senile grandmother – only to learn she’s a witch. A Haunting in Connecticut filmmaker Peter Cornwell will direct based off a script provided by...

Though The Collaborator is Martin Donovan’s writing and directorial debut, he is no stranger to the game. Donovan has acted in both film and television for over two decades. His roles have ranged from co-staring in the 2009 horror film, A Haunting in Connecticut, to playing Mary-Louise Parker’s love interest in the popular Showtime television series, Weeds. Though Martin had plenty of acting experience in a number of different genres (as well in a T.V. show about a woman who sells pot), The Collaborator marks the first time an audience gets to see what he can do behind the camera....

"True Blood" star Sam Trammell has shape-shifted himself into something even more dynamic than a collie – the actor is turning himself into a real-life movie star.
Collider reports that Trammell has signed on to play Jeff, a landscaper who serves as a source of comfort to a distraught divorcee in "Precious" producer Sarah Siegel-Magness' directorial debut, "Long Time Gone," an adaptation of April Stevens' novel "Angel, Angel."
The indie, produced by Smokewood Entertainment, centers on a family who begins to unravel when Gordie, the man of the house, played by Anthony Lapaglia, leaves behind his wife and children to pursue a relationship with another woman.

With editor-cum-director Tom Elkins now aboard Lionsgate's A Haunting in Georgia , cameras are expected to roll in August on David Coggeshall's script. The film is a companion piece to A Haunting in Connecticut , but not a direct sequel. Shortly after moving into their ideal new home, a couple grows concerned when their young daughter begins encountering mysterious strangers that no one else can see. The couple's greatest fear is realized when they themselves begin to witness terrifying phenomena in and around the house, providing clues that could unlock a chilling mystery that has remained a closely guarded secret for generations. So, the formula remains the same as Connecticut : a mother, a father, a child and a secret. It worked at the box office the first time......

He’s back. Risen once more to bring horror to our nights and terror to our dreams. So, are you ready for Freddy?
Er, no, is the answer to that one, not if this is all the latest film in the franchise has to offer us. Touted as a ‘re-imagining’ and not a remake, it’s interesting that the one thing lacking in this latest instalment of the Fred Krueger franchise is, well, imagination.
Directed by Samuel Bayer, this new nightmare is let down on several fronts, the most important ones being story, characters, a god-awful script and poor performances by an almost forgetful cast. The film’s only saving graces are Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Little Children) as Krueger himself, and a surprisingly good turn by Kyle Gallner (A Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body) as sleep-deprived teen Quentin Smith. Unfortunately, these two alone cannot save this film from...

There's something about Kyle Gallner that does "tortured" so well. Whether he's exacting torment on his classmates in Veronica Mars or suffering at the hands of evil in Jennifer's Body and A Haunting in Connecticut, the 23-year-old actor isn't afraid to let fear and ferocity flicker across his baby face, and it's a trait that serves him well as Quentin, the high-schooler who bears the brunt of Freddy Krueger's wrath in the new remake of Nightmare on Elm Street.
This week, Movieline spoke to Gallner about two intriguing indies he has coming up (Goodnight Moon and Beautiful Boy) and the most horrifying part of his Elm Street experience: acting in the near-nude for days on end.

Up until now, the status of the project remained unknown. Last night the THR Heat Vision blog nabbed exclusive word on who's taking over as director and when filming begins. According to the THR Heat Vision Blog, Tom Elkins, an editor who has worked on such films as "Wanted" and "The Da Vinci Code," is stepping into the director's chair for the first time with "A Haunting in Georgia," Gold Circle's follow-up to "A Haunting in Connecticut." 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false If you've ever seen the hour-long episodes on late-night television then you know that the aptly titled "A Haunting" series is actually a fairly disturbing program. From the real-life testimonials to the creepily filmed re-enactments, a handful of the show's episodes are just as good as some mid-level horror films I've seen. It's hardly surprising then that Gold Circle would use the show as a basis for its moderately successful thriller A Haunting in Connecticut as well as its upcoming sequel. And of all the episodes I've seen, few have bothered me more than A Haunting in Georgia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the follow-up has finally found its director in Connecticut editor Tom Elkins. A newcomer to the world of film directing, Elkins has worked as an editor on projects such as Wanted and The Da Vinci Code, as well as a handful of horror films.
