Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.

Teo died Thursday of an unknown cause in his home in North Hollywood, his rep Italia Gandolfo told The Hollywood Reporter.

The writer-director’s body of work included the Hellraiser-inspired Necromentia (2009) and The Assent (2019), a movie about exorcism that featured Tatum O’Neal and premiered at the Toronto After Dark Festival.

Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.

The Gene Generation (2007), released by Lionsgate and made for a reported $2.5 million, starred Ling as a kick-ass assassin battling DNA hackers and included a cameo by Faye Dunaway.

Fast Vengeance (2021), starring martial arts star D.Y. Sao, centered on the world of underground motorcycle racing. (Sao and Teo would reunite for 2022’s Shadow Master.)

Google Engineers Collaborate to Produce Pearry Teo's Dead Inside
Yes, our lives revolve around Google. It's gone from Yahoo!'s chumpy little brother, to the biggest website in the world. It's so big that Google somehow went from a noun to a verb! The people behind this kind of success have got to have their heads on straight. Let's hope the eight Google engineers who joined forces to produce the upcoming horror film Dead Inside were some of the good Google workers, not the ones who just hang around by the candy machine and try to say something that sounds smart.

Written by Jennifer Zhang and directed by Pearry Teo, Dead Inside is a creepy film set at a party where bad things begin to happen after one character has a premonition of another's death. Zhang is also featured in the film along with stars Lala Hensley, Matthew Mercer, Rayne Bidder, James Adam Lim, Tara Strand and Sage Howard.

Geek Gossip Pt 2: Captain Nemo, Snow White, Arabian Knights, Highlander
Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville (pictured) has been cast in the title role in Captain Nemo, Shoreline Entertainment's 3D action movie set to start filming in China in August.

The steampunk adventure will see Nemo join forces with President Ulysses Grant to battle an evil genius who is causing naval disasters, reports HeatVision.

Pearry Teo (who helmed The Gene Generation, Necromentia and TV movie Witchville) will direct the feature, described as a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Universal has moved the release date of Snow White and the Huntsman (starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, with Charlize Theron as the evil queen) from December 2012 to June 1 that year.

This means it will debut ahead of Relativity Media's rival project, Brothers Grimm: Snow White, which comes out on June 29 and stars Lily Collins and Armie Hammer, with Julia Roberts as its evil queen. Mirror mirror on the wall,...

First image from Pearry Teo’s ‘Witchville’
I’ve been a fan of director Pearry Reginald Teo ever since I saw his first feature film The Gene Generation in 2007, he followed that up with last years Necromentia - a dark and twisted horror flick that recalls the best of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, that in my opinion even out does Barker (for my review of that film, click here).

Back in September I managed to track down Teo for an interview on the set of his next film Witchville, which was shooting in China. At the time Teo revealed that the film was a fantasy/medieval film starring Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2), Ed Speelers (Eragon), Andrew Pleavin (300, Blood: The Last Vampire), Myanna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) and Sarah Douglas (Superman 1, 2), well now thanks to Teo and the Luke Goss forum we have the official synopsis and the first image from the film which is due to air...

We've known our friend Pearry (Necromentia, The Gene Generation, and the upcoming Dark Oz) was working on a new film for a while, and while he's not allowed to give us specifics, he gave us the go ahead to speculate based on the details he's publicly leaked which are as follows:

1. The film is for NBC/Universal

2. It's kind of an homage, or in the vein of, World of Warcraft, so clearly it's fantasy.

3. He's currently shooting in China.

And that's all we have.. we'll have the exclusive for you when he's allowed to give us deets, but for now, we're excited.

Necromentia: A Movie Review
Director: Pearry Reginald Teo.

Writer: Stephanie Joyce.

A love story set in the backdrop of hell "Necromentia" is an unreleased horror feature that offers three intertwined stories in a non-linear story-telling fashion. Centering around the characters Morbius, Hagen, and Travis each character interacts with the others while searching for love despite the pain of betrayal and the hopelessness of recovery from dementia. From the puzzling script of Stephanie Joyce (April's Last) and the creative direction of Pearry Theo (The Gene Generation) "Necromentia" is a horrifying glimpse at death magic and the underworld.

Beginning with Hagen (Santiago Craig) believing his girlfriend will return to him despite the difficulties of death the picture quickly introduces the charismatic Travis (Chad Grimes) who is searching for a reconnection with his lost brother Tommy. Using black magic and trickery Hagen is sent to the underworld as a "guinea pig" to return with the soul of...

The twisted history of the lost scifi film Siphon
Back in 2005, Variety trumpeted the coming of Siphon, a hot new science fiction script from writer Paul Sloan, who's latest project, the post-apocalyptic Tribes of October, has been getting quite a lot of attention recently. Described as being "The Silence of the Lambs meets Blade Runner," Siphon's story of an obsessed female detective on the path of a serial killer who may not be human, was to be sprawling, dark and deeply dystopian so, of course, many of us rejoiced the notion of its coming.

Swedish video and commercials director, Traktor, even came attached to the project. It had a director, money behind it and a crap load of amazing concept art that was impressing everyone with its unique vision. Then, everything halted. A hefty 50 million dollar price-tag was causing great anxiety to a studio system that was still afraid of dark science fiction. I mean, Blade Runner was great 'an all,...

Benny Hell waxes poetic on William Gibson and the joys of Lsd
Recently I’ve noticed the term ‘Cyberpunk’ thrown around a lot. Many bands call themselves and their sound Cyberpunk, and it has rapidly become a genre unto itself. Originating with the 1983 story of the same name by Phillip K. Dick Award-winning author Bruce Bethke, Cyberpunk is a cultural evolution that has come about as a result of the fusion between man and technology. The sound of Cyberpunk is largely rooted in a marriage of visceral instruments, such as guitars and live drums, bound with electronic programming. It also embodies an entire philosophical ideology that is strangely akin to the Punk movement from which it takes a lot of it’s styling. Mass-media, pop-psychology, and the mainstream approach to life are rejected in favor of an existence based in the reality of your own choosing, conception, and creation. A number of media events are tapping into this life-style, illustrating the validity of the concept.

Concept poster for Dark Oz

Last I talked to Pearry the script was still in rewrites but according to IMDb the project is still slated for 2010. In the meantime, you can check out Pearry's latest project Necromentia.

Here's what we have on the film (besides our interview):

Dorothy returns to Oz for another adventure. But this time, what she remembers of Oz is not the same. With her trusted friends now under an evil spell by the Nome King, she must find new allies and return Oz to it's former glory.

Based on the graphic novels of the same name,...

The Gene Generation DVD Review
For a straight to DVD Movie I have to say that the movie meets expectations. It has some kind of originality that set it apart from other Sci-fi movies. I could not help to think of Alex Proya’s sci-fi masterpiece The Dark City. It is very similar in style, photography and acting, I could say, in my opinion, that this movie, with a little more thought and money had the potential to become a cult movie, nonetheless, for fans of the DNA Hackers Chronicles, Sci-fi, action movies, and Punk music the movie would be quite enjoyable. The movie moves [...]...

Review of Pearry Reginald Teo's bio-punk flick The Gene Generation

Rating: 6.5 out of 10

Detractors can say what they want about the technical shortcomings of the finished film but there's no arguing that Pearry Reginald Teo's The Gene Generation betrays it's creators as being some of the most audacious and talented genre filmmakers in the business. I mean, not only did they take a script that was probably as easy to wrap one's brain around as a flux capacitor instruction manual - what with talk of black market gene hacking, secret assassin leagues, and various double crosses - but they decided to tell the intricate story in an entirely original world, built from scratch on the thinest of budgets. And man, what a wild world it is. So wild in fact, this might be the most still...

American Film Market 2008, Part One: The Overview
I know I’m at Los Angeles’ American Film Market when, as soon as I get off the plane, I run into Lloyd Kaufman (in a men’s room, no less). The Troma chief serves as the Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, which runs the Afm. Who better to chair an organization and market dedicated to discovering and promoting movies created outside the studio system than Kaufman?

This November, the Afm unveils over 500 films in dozens of languages for prospective international buyers. They screen the majority of these new motion pictures at seven different screening venues in sunny Santa Monica. The Afm is the proud home for the smaller guys, foreign and art-house features and B- to Z-grade movies. Just about everything stars Michael Madsen, C. Thomas Howell and/or Billy Zane. Best of all, the number of genre films has increased substantially over the 11 years I’ve been coming here,...

Exclusive stills for Pearry Reginald Teo's next Necromentia
We reported on this flick back in October when all we knew was that it was a short film, but director Teo (The Gene Generation) let us know he'd received funding to turn it into a full length feature. Well he's finished shooting and he's a few days into digitizing the footage, and pulled a few stills for us to share with our readers, and if I must say, they look excellent.

Necromentia tells the stories of 3 men whose lives have been turned over by the existence of a tattooed Ouija Board and the gateways they open with it. Hagen is a strange character who keeps the corpse of his lover in his house, believing that one day she will come back from the dead. But when he meets a mysterious man named Travis, he soon learns that maybe he could be the one who goes into hell and bring her back from the dead.
