Trigun and Space Dandy offer similar vibes to Cowboy Bebop with their space western themes and comedic elements. Bungo Stray Dogs and Michiko & Hatchin are anime series that capture the film-noir feel and individual character development seen in Cowboy Bebop. Black Lagoon and Gungrave have dark and complex storylines that fans of Cowboy Bebop will enjoy, with interesting characters and intense action.
Cowboy Bebop is often cited as a perfect starter anime for good reason, naturally leading many to seek out anime with the same vibe. With its jazzy music, deep characters, and witty plots, Bebop's magic is difficult to recapture. Given that even the series' big-budget Netflix remake couldn't even carry the torch by the estimation of many critics and fans, it's tempting to think there's nothing else out there like it. Though Bebop is indeed unique, that doesn't mean fans should give up hope of finding a similar series.

Gungrave's anime adaptation by Madhouse successfully brings out the emotional core of the story, moving beyond its flimsy premise to deliver a fantastic mafia tale filled with drama and tragedy. By dedicating the first fifteen episodes to a lengthy flashback, Madhouse slowly builds up the plot and develops the characters, turning them into fully realized human beings and breathing new life into the story. The mafia drama is so well-executed that the sci-fi elements, although fitting in terms of metaphor and symbolism, feel somewhat out of place, highlighting the strength of the storytelling and character development.
While Trigun: Stampede may be how anime fans know of Yasuhiro Nightow today, older audiences may be more familiar with his earlier work, Gungrave. While it started as a sci-fi shooter game, its best rendition is Madhouse's anime adaptation. Despite its flimsy premise, it led to a fantastic mafia tale that strove for maximum drama and tragedy.

When the leaves start to turn and the streaming calendar flips over to autumn, it’s helpful to have a guaranteed hit. And that’s exactly what Hulu has on its hands with its list of new releases for September 2022.
While Prime Video unveils The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and HBO Max continues on with House of the Dragon, Hulu is turning to a hit of its own with The Handmaid’s Tale. Season 5 of the dystopian epic premieres Sept. 14. That’s just the start of Hulu’s TV offerings this month though.
While there are no original movies to speak of, Hulu has many shows to accompany June’s story in September. South Korea sci-fi series Grid arrives on Sept. 7 and is followed by Wedding Season on Sept. 8, Reboot on Sept. 20, and Ramy season 3 on Sept. 30. Although there are many videogames based upon anime series, “Gungrave” shows that such inspiration can work both ways, having been adapted from Yasuhiro Nightow’s hit 2002 Playstation title. Created by Nightow (best known for “Trigun”), the 26 episode series originally aired back in 2003, and was directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru, who was the key animator working on “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie”, and who also helmed the third “Naruto” film. Having proved popular both in Japan and in the Us, the action packed, though essentially character driven show now arrives on region 2 DVD via Mvm, handily collected in a complete box set. The series opens, quite literally, with a bang, throwing the viewer without much explanation into a battle, as the hulking Beyond the Grave is revived by a scientist and takes on hordes of strange, ghoulish opponents. As the story progresses, it transpires that his real name is Brandon Heat (voiced by...

Yet another cult Manga/Anime classic is heading for the big screen, with news today that U.S and Asia-based Convergence Entertainment has secured feature rights to the hugely popular Gungrave. Based on author Yasuhiro Nightow’s story of a murdered crime syndicate member who returns from beyond the grave to avenge his death, Gungrave is set to go into production next year the project will have a budget around $30-35m range. This could actually work. That’s not bad at all as funding goes - but the ever the important question of who will direct and star - will probably decide if this lives, or dies on its (undead) ass.

Death doesn’t matter. Only revenge…
Back from the grave, and back from the oblivion so many Geneon titles were consigned to, Gungrave comes to us this week, courtesy of Funimation, in an all new complete collection. The series is from Yasuhiro Nightow, who was also the original creator of Trigun, and it explores many of the same themes, but with a much darker twist.
The beginning of the story is a jarringly bumpy ride, in which we meet Brandon Heat — or rather, the man who used to be Brandon Heat — until he died. He has since been brought back, and goes by a new name: Grave, as in “Beyond The Grave”. At least, that’s what the creepy old mad scientist tells us. Then Grave goes for a walk, some monsters show up, and the shooting begins.
From there, the series begins for the second time, and we get...
