Jason Reitman recently appeared on Neal Brennan’s Blocks podcast (see below), where he opened up about his work on Ghostbusters: Afterlife, his filmmaking style, and his father Ivan Reitman’s thoughts on sequels.
Jason shared his thoughts on Afterlife, admitting it might be the “least funny” Ghostbusters film but saying it still manages to bring people to tears, which he found rewarding.
He explained that the idea for the movie came from a long-held vision of a teenage girl finding a proton pack in a barn. Interestingly, his daughter was the same age as the character Phoebe Spengler during filming, which made the project even more personal to him.
Jason reflected on how important the film was in a family sense, noting that his father, Ivan, passed away about a year after they finished production. He explained that filming Afterlife allowed him to think about how his father felt...

This month will be a great time for longtime fans of Resident Evil. A new film chronicling the unmade adaptation that never came to be has a premiere date that's imminent, and it looks to be one that fans won't want to miss.
George A. Romero's Resident Evil will premiere on Digital and On Demand on Jan. 7. From Uncork'd Entertainment and director Brandon Salisbury, the documentary explores the story of the original plans to turn Resident Evil into a feature film under the watch of legendary filmmaker George A. Romero. Famously, Romero laid the groundwork for modern zombie horror movies and TV shows with his iconic films like Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. At one point, he was set to take on Resident Evil before his planned adaptation fizzled out, ultimately leading to Paul W.S. Anderson to launch his own...

The final moments of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire features a sweet tribute to Ivan Reitman, which is a fitting farewell to the legendary director. For most of its run-time, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has fun bringing back characters and locations from the original Ghostbusters movies to interact with the next generation of the franchise. This includes a few key tributes to past characters and concepts, bringing back much of the original surviving cast for certain moments.
However, the sweetest tribute to the history of the series comes towards the end of the film, and takes on multiple additional meanings. Instead of just being a chance to highlight the franchise's past and future, the ending of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire also includes a sweet note that explains the film was "For Ivan." This is a reference to one of the creatives who was responsible for the original Ghostbusters, and whose impact on the franchise has been felt for decades.

Ernie Hudson seems to have a love-hate relationship with the entire Ghostbusters series, acknowledging its significance in his career but also recognizing that the studio crossed the streams when it came to promoting the movies. But one aspect that shines above the rest is his admiration for Peter Venkman himself, Bill Murray, who he recognizes helped him star onboard for the 1989 sequel.
Appearing at the Rhode Island Comic Con over the weekend (via People), Ernie Hudson remembered that his casting in Ghostbusters II wasn’t exactly a guarantee. “Bill Murray is the only actor I think I’ve ever worked with who when they tried to get him to do another [Ghostbusters] — remember it was about 20 years before we came back with another movie after the second movie. But Bill just basically said, ‘If Ernie Hudson’s not in it, I’m not doing it.’ There are not many people...

The following contains spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
In 2021, the Ghostbusters franchise was resurrected with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. After the poorly received 2016 remake, fans lost hope that they would ever see a good sequel or remake to the long-beloved franchise. Fortunately, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was everything fans wanted a new generation of Ghostbusters to be. It paid tribute to the original film and the iconic cast that lifted the Ghostbusters to infamy. It also ushered in a newer, younger cast to which the franchise could pass the gauntlet. Since Afterlife was so well received, fans had high hopes for the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire sequel.
Sadly, Frozen Empire didn't live up to critics' expectations. Fans were kinder about the film, claiming it was still enjoyable. The film brought back many original cast members, which helped sway the public's opinion. That said, including beloved characters like Dr. Peter Venkman and Ray Stantz wasn't enough...

House of the Dragon‘s world gets even bigger in season 2. With the Dance of the Dragons Targaryen civil war now in motion, the “Blacks” (Queen Rhaenyra I’s supporters) and the “Greens” (King Aegon II’s supporters) must enlist the other Great Houses of Westeros to their cause.
This means that many of the characters we’ve gotten to know thus far, Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Ser Criston (Fabian Frankel), and more, will hit the road to recruit nobles like college football coaches in need of a star quarterback.
“People have to curry favor with the other lords and figure out who’s on what team,” House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal told Den of Geek. “It’s nice because instead of just introducing 18 new characters, we follow characters who we already know going to these new places and meeting new people.”
Condal is exaggerating a bit.

The Ghostbusters are back in New York for the second instalment of the sequel-slash-reboot series, following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This time round, it’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Jason Reitman. Effectively energised by the New York setting, the sequel has evidently learned from the disastrous mistakes of the previous film and emerges as an entertaining adventure in its own right, though it’s not entirely without problems.

Netflix's Ghostbusters animated series faces a challenge after the disappointment of Frozen Empire. An animated show can bring back the lighter, comedic tone of the original movies, refreshing the franchise. The TV show has the advantage of creative freedom in depicting ghosts and demons in a more entertaining manner.
The world of Ghostbusters is expanding with an animated TV show for Netflix, which has a big challenge ahead after its disappointing $200 million box office bomb in 2024. The Ghostbusters franchise is one of the most beloved ones in the sci-fi comedy branch thanks to its horror tones while still keeping a light tone and family-friendly approach. Following the trend of reboots, the Ghostbusters franchise was revived in 2021, 32 years after the release of Ghostbusters II. Titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the movie introduced the daughter and grandchildren of the late Egon Spengler, who carried on his legacy as a ghostbuster.

Avengers Assemble in Endgame was the ultimate fan service moment for MCU fans, uniting heroes for an epic battle against Thanos. Yoda's fight in Attack of the Clones finally showcased his power, a highly anticipated moment for Star Wars fans wanting to see him in action. The return of the original Ghostbusters in Afterlife was a heartfelt tribute and a well-earned moment of fan service for fans of the iconic movie franchise.
When done right, moments of blatant fan service become iconic cinematic memories that viewers love and cherish. By playing into audience expectations and delivering exactly what they have always craved, movies and franchises could pay homage to their legacy in an incredibly appealing way to longtime audience members who were well-versed in the series' lore and history. While blatant fan service can sometimes fall flat on its head, when executed appropriately, it felt like well-earned lover letters...

Grief is a peculiar emotion, and it hits people most bizarrely. People around us deal with grief in their own ways, and there needs to be no judgment passed based on how people deal with pain, which usually follows the loss of a loved one. Afterlife on Netflix is one of the few shows on Ott spaces that discusses how people deal with a personal tragedy. A Part of You, a Swedish Netflix original directed by Sigge Eklund, is about a young girl dealing with personal tragedy. This Netflix original is set to release on May 30th on the streaming platform.

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

Despite VOD release and budget challenges, the sequel has shown staying power since opening at #1. The film's overambitious $100 million budget may have hindered its box office success compared to its predecessor.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire just barely gets past a major box office milestone even after releasing digitally. The follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was originally released on March 22, 2024. The Ghostbusters sequel was met with mixed reviews, getting a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience perception was comparatively higher, with an 83% approval rating. The film features a leading cast including Bill Murray, Dan Akyroyd, Ernie Hudson, Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and Celeste OConnor.
As per Collider, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has now made its way past a global milestone. After this past weekend, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has brought it to almost exactly $200 million worldwide.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a film that looks to accomplish many things. It is a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, while also bringing back the original Ghostbusters actors from the 1984 film in a more substantial role. It also introduces a whole host of new characters including big-name comedy stars like Paul Rudd or Kumail Nanjiani. Additionally, the film has also served as a franchise vehicle for some exciting young talent who will likely be the next big stars of their generation. Two big names in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire are Mckenna Grace and Emily Alyn Lind, who play Ghostbuster Phoebe Spengler and the new lead ghost character Melody, respectively.
Phoebe and Melody's friendship in the movie is one of the hearts of the movie, as it puts a Ghostbuster and the very creature their job is to eradicate on a new playing field. Many read a romantic subtext between the two characters,...

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is, in some ways, the most ambitious movie in the franchise yet. The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Gil Kenan and co-written by Kenan and Afterlife director Jason Reitman, brought together the series largest-ever cast and introduced new gadgets, powers, and ghosts to the universe. Ernie Hudson envisions a live-action Ghostbusters TV series focusing on his character, Winston Zeddemore. Hudson's idea involves exploring how ghosts influence thoughts and feelings, impacting the physical world. Despite mixed reviews, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire resonated with fans, potentially paving the way for more installations.
The Ghostbusters franchise has managed to please many fans with its belated sequels, Afterlife and Frozen Empire, but one star of the spooky comedy saga would love to see it transition to television in the future. The Ghostbusters are already heading to Netflix with a brand new animated series, but Og star Ernie Hudson wants to add a live-action series centering on his character of Winston Zeddemore.

The tradition of the Ghostbusters tends to consist of four individuals, and this is the formula that every version follows. In the original crew, most people tend to think of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis since, in the film, they are the three founders and were also a major part of the comedy scene in the 1980s. Yet, actor Ernie Hudson and his character Winston Zeddemore are likely among the most vital components of what made the franchise such a success. Winston Zeddemore was the everyman and one the audience could relate to. He wasn't a scientist; he was just a guy simply coming in and answering a help wanted ad for a job.
Winston is the promise to the audience that anyone can be a Ghostbuster. In a part that might have gotten overshadowed by the other team members, Ernie Hudson holds his own with some of the biggest comedic stars.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is available to rent and purchase on most major VOD platforms. The sequel follows new and old Ghostbusters alike as they try to prevent a deadly new ice age in New York City. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was a disappointment both critically and commercially, but it could find more success on PVOD and streaming.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire makes its VOD debut after its theatrical run. Director Gil Kenan's new installment in the decades-spanning franchise picks up after the Ghostbusters: Afterlife ending, following the Spengler family as they face a new enemy in New York City who threatens to begin a new ice age. Despite featuring the return of original stars like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson alongside newcomers like Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace, the film failed to live up to the quality of some of its predecessors.

By now, you should know exactly who you're gonna call. The fifth installment of the ghost-busting franchise arrived earlier this year, courtesy of director Gil Kenan, with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Although not as much of a forward-looking sequel as many fans wanted it to be, the nostalgia-bound film picked up where "Afterlife" left off and reunited new additions Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace (along with newcomer comedians Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt) with the original cast of the 1984 classic that started it all: Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson. At least in terms of the box office, the results were rather mixed and only time will tell if pivoting this series away from raunchy, irreverent comedy towards a more family-friendly demographic will ultimately pay off.
But even as "Frozen Empire" remains in theaters, fans now...

The cancelation of Young Sheldon after season seven despite still being a hit show on CBS and Netflix was surprising. Annie Potts expressed sadness over the cancelation and shared her disappointment with the decision. The producers and some actors agreed to end the show on a high note as Sheldon's life transitions to college at Cal Tech.
In the middle of November 2023, the decision was made to end Young Sheldon with season seven. It was perceived as a strange choice by some cast, crew, and viewers, considering the show was still a hit on CBS. It became an even bigger hit once it arrived on Netflix in the U.S. about 10 days after the cancelation was announced. While some of the cast and producers have come out to say, essentially, that it's time to move on, other cast members like Annie Potts have expressed their disappointment.

2024 is an important year for the movie business. The past few years have been all about recovering from the pandemic. Now? Hollywood and theater chains are facing the challenge of weathering a year that has been crippled by 2023's Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes. There have been moments worth cheering about, such as the success of "Dune: Part Two." But, as always, there have been plenty of sour moments at the box office as well, with more than a few flops to go along with the hits.
The early part of the year was anchored by relatively smaller hits like director David Ayer's "The Beekeeper" and the "Mean Girls" musical. Mixed in along the way were a wide variety of misfires, from hopeful big studio blockbusters to smaller, original movies just trying to find their way in an uncertain theatrical landscape. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire surpasses $150 million at the global box office after its fourth weekend. The movie is the sixth 2024 release to pass the $150 million milestone. Despite its success, the film may need to reach $200 million or more to break even due to its $100 million budget.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has passed a major global box office milestone. The new movie is the fifth theatrical installment in the franchise and a direct follow-up to 2021's Afterlife, a legacy sequel that brought back the original characters after the 2016 reboot introduced a separate universe. Frozen Empire follows an ice-cold supernatural menace threatening New York City, forcing the surviving veteran Ghostbusters (and their former secretary Janine) to once again team up with the new characters from Afterlife to defeat it.
Per Variety, the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire box office has reached a total of $160 million worldwide at the end of its fourth weekend in theaters, passing the important $150 million milestone.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire explores the significance of the old containment unit in its climax, serving as a giant ghost trap. Learning from past critiques, the sequel balances nostalgia with fresh elements, giving original cast members bigger roles. The better incorporation of iconic elements hints at how the franchise can continue to expand, fully passing the torch to a new generation.
Despite its destruction in the climax, Gil Kenan explains why the old containment unit still works in the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ending. After being teased to have problems in Afterlife's post-credits scene, much of the new sequel's story revolved around the Spengler family working with Winston to determine a solution for it. The movie's third act sees the villain Garraka break open the containment unit with the help of melancholic spirit Melody to unleash a ghost army. In an effort to defeat the god-like being,...

Warning: Some Spoilers lie ahead for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire!
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has drawn very mixed reviews from critics for its overstuffed plot, underwhelming character development and minimal ghostbusting. This mixed reception is seemingly translating to early box office struggles as the movie has set two franchise-lows in its first two weeks of release. With Frozen Empire's mid-credits scene setting up a plot for a sequel, it will need to find more longevity in the coming weeks to become profitable enough for the studio to move forward.
As it suffers a dismal second weekend at the box office, the latest episode of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is looking at Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The fifth installment in the beloved franchise finds the Spengler family now living in the iconic New York firehouse and carrying on the titular business, leading to their deadliest foe yet with the mysterious Garraka. Some movie stars don’t lose their luster. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over domestic charts this weekend, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” scored $37 million from 3,861 venues across opening day and preview screenings. It’s an impressive debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace that was projected earlier this week, which had pegged an opening just north of $50 million.
“The New Empire” cost a substantial sum of $135 million to produce, but it’s getting off on the right, gigantic foot. Reviews have been mediocre — a notch down from the fairly positively received “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and way below the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. Nonetheless, audiences aren’t being swayed. The kaiju team-up seems to be playing well to crowds, after earning an “A-” grade from research firm Cinema Score.

Warning: Major spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire below!
Frozen Empire brings back Slimer in a lackluster subplot where Finn Wolfhard's Trevor tries to capture him. This whole section is recycled from a deleted Ghostbusters 2 story, where Louis tries to trap Slimer. Wolfhard's Trevor is underutilized in Frozen Empire, continuing a trend of not giving him much material to work with.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire recycles a subplot cut from a previous sequel, which only highlights how the sequel shortchanges one of the cast. It's been a struggle to get the Ghostbusters movie franchise up and running, but it appears to finally be up on its feet. There was a long break following 1989's Ghostbusters 2, but following legacy sequel Afterlife and 2024's Frozen Empire, the saga has finally gained momentum. Frozen Empire's Rotten Tomatoes rating may be a franchise low, though it scored a nice opening weekend for Sony.

I’ll start with an important disclaimer for all readers since the following hot take will inevitably trigger strong reactions. As someone from a small European country and born in 1994, Ghostbusters (1984) was never a defining classic of my childhood or adolescence, so I don’t feel the nostalgia that many others have for the original film, although I do enjoy it. That said, I (re)watched it, along with Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week in preparation for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and – here it comes – I consider the 2021 sequel my favorite movie in the famous franchise. In fact, comparing it directly with the original – here it comes again – beyond the inevitable audiovisual improvements, I find Afterlife to have better humor, characters, and cast.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire expands the story but fails to answer key questions about the Spengler family, leaving major gaps. Despite building up mysteries in the previous film, Frozen Empire continues to ignore the identity of Egon and Callie's spouses. The sequel takes the story in new directions but frustrates fans by sidestepping crucial answers to lingering questions.

Forty years later, it’s safe to say Sony and one of its most beloved film titles still ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost. They also apparently need not fear curmudgeonly film reviews either based on the solid performance of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire over last weekend’s box office.
Despite receiving a tepid Rotten Tomatoes aggregate score of 44 percent, the fourth or fifth film in the franchise—depending how you count Paul Feig’s 2016 remake of the same name—opened above expectations with an estimated $45 million in three days. That is nearly identical to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opened at $44 million, and the aforementioned 2016 remake, which grossed $46 million in its debut. Given such similarities, it’s probably worth noting that one reason the 2016 reboot was perceived as a financial disappointment and Afterlife was not is because the former cost a reported $145 million while Afterlife’s price tag was about half that.

It was a bit of a good news, bad news situation for Sony Pictures over the weekend. The good news is that "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," the latest entry in the long-running comedy/horror franchise, topped the box office with a $45 million haul. That was at the high end of expectations, which was certainly positive, and theaters could use the help right now. At the same time, the movie carries a $100 million budget — which was quite a bit higher than 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." And yet, at the end of the day, both movies opened to just about the same number domestically. This provides proof that this franchise has a pretty well-defined ceiling commercially, which likely limits what can be done going forward.
What's interesting is that the last three movies in the series all opened in an eerily similar range. 2016's female-led "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" took in $46 million on its...

The following contains spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , now playing in theaters.
While Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire focuses on a new generation of Spenglers, it also brings back some of the old gang, namely, Peter Venkman, Winston Zeddemore, and Ray Stantz. All hands on deck are needed to fight off the new villain, Garraka.
This demonic ghost wants to invade Earth and make it a frigid zone for other evil spirits to roam. In the process, as two eras team up once more, Frozen Empire has many Easter eggs and references to the past.
Garraka Nods to Gozer and Her Minions Close
In the 1984 movie and the Afterlife sequel, Gozer wanted to come to Earth to claim dominion. The entity used foot-soldiers, including monstrous dogs. Garraka has that same energy. He is another interdimensional being who wants to invade and free spirits from the firehouse's containment unit -- a scheme Gozer was down for as well.

The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, despite a good director, didn't resonate with fans due to the title and expectations. Fans wanted to see the Og team return, which was fulfilled with the successful legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Director Gil Kenan and producer Jason Reitman are happy with the response to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and plan for more stories.
Ghostbusters veteran Ernie Hudson has shared his reasoning as to why 2016's reboot, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, just did not resonate with audiences. The return of the Ghostbusters franchise with 2021's Afterlife, and this year's sequel, Frozen Empire, has received a resounding thumbs up from long-term fans, but the Melissa McCarthy-led attempt to reinvigorate the franchise did not get the same reception.

The 2016 Ghostbusters might be one of the most flames major productions of this century, with the trailer quickly becoming the most disliked on YouTube. There were a couple of camps here. One was targeted as being misogynistic, taking personal affront that their beloved characters had been replaced by women. While another is that there just didn’t seem like a point to it all. Why bother if you don’t have the original Ghosbusters? Well, one late recruit — Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore — has some thoughts on the matter.
As Ernie Hudson told The Independent, it seemed like a waste to make the Ghostbusters back in 2016, saying, “Look, I’m a fan of [director] Paul Feig so I have nothing negative about him to say. Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan has given fans an update on the upcoming animated Ghostbusters show, which is slated to release on Netflix.
Speaking with A Trip to the Movies, Kenan shared that the new Ghostbusters animated series is in full development. "I just watched an entire art presentation for the show," Kenan said. "I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster." Kenan joined the Ghostbusters franchise in 2021 with Afterlife, writing the legacy sequel alongside director Jason Reitman, whose father helmed the first movie in the series. Kenan then took...

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire jumps right into the Ghostbusting action, with the new team – former science teacher Gary Groobersom (Paul Rudd), Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) and her two teenage children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace...
