Sally Hawkins, who plays Sue Trinder, also appeared as a maid in the earlier adaptation of another Sarah Waters' books Tipping the Velvet (2002).
The title, Fingersmith, is an archaic term used to refer to a petty thief or pick pocketer, in reference to the story's themes of money and theft. It is also a double entendre, and refers to the sexual act of fingering, in reference to the lesbian themes in the story.
