Clive Owen has not forgotten his roots. Growing up in a working-class family in Coventry in the 1970s U.K., he yearned to explore different roles in life — and the youth wing of the city’s civic Belgrade Theatre gave him that opportunity.
More than four decades later, Owen — who most recently appeared in “Monsieur Spade” as an aging Sam Spade drawn back into the game to solve a post-World War II murder mystery in the south of France — credits that experience as the foundation for his career.
“That is where it all started for me — joining the youth theater was a life changer for me,” he tells Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he receives the President’s Award Saturday night. “The city is still a very tough one, and places like the youth theater are a lifeline for kids like me to...

When the teaser trailer for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" debuted last March, our reintroduction to Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara) and Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) was a somber one. The mother and daughter were standing graveside in a cemetery, mourning an undisclosed character. Fans of the original quickly guessed that the person being committed to the Earth was the family's patriarch, Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones), but Tim Burton, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, refused to confirm this suspicion. "We'll see," was all he said at the time.
Two months later, with the release of the first full theatrical trailer, this minor mystery has been solved thanks to an utterance by Jenna Ortega, who plays Lydia's rebellious teenage daughter Astrid. "I can't believe grandpa's dead." It's Charles' death, then, that serves as the catalyst for the sequel's plot, as confirmed by the following synopsis:

The following contains descriptions of violence.
Jalmari Helander's Sisu is at times a truly ridiculous movie, as a single unstoppable hero holds his own against everything a platoon of German soldiers can throw at him. The film's protagonist Korpi hurls mines at enemies and slices throats to drain oxygen underwater. But the wildest thing about the character might come from a real-life source.
Korpi's inspiration ranges from fictional figures like Rambo to one of the most famous real-world soldiers in Finnish history. According to Helander, the Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä served as part of the influence for the bloody good Sisu -- which is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and digitally. Sisu's staggering kill count and its hero's unstoppable nature reflect a wild true story.

Exclusive: Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta books have completed their long journey to the screen with a blockbuster TV series starring Oscar winner Nicole Kidman in the title role and Oscar nominee Jamie Lee Curtis as the famous forensic pathologist’s sister Dorothy, I have learned. Kidman is executive producing through Blossom Films and Curtis through Comet Pictures the drama, from writer-showrunner Liz Sarnoff (Barry) and Blumhouse Television, which I hear is nearing a two-season straight-to-series order at Prime Video. A rep for the streamer declined comment as deals for the project, to be produced by Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, are still being finalized. It is expected to receive an order for two eight-episode seasons, sources said.

Since the SAG Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actress in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions for Film Actress, the five nominees will be Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”) and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”).
Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer” comes in first place with 71/20 odds. This would be the first individual SAG Awards nomination for Stewart and her second overall following a Film Ensemble bid for 2007’s “Into the Wild.” In “Spencer,” Stewart portrays the Princess of Wales as she grapples with mental health issues and decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles.

Unlike on the film side, the SAG Awards do not distinguish between leading and featured roles when it comes to rewarding TV performances. While this year’s TV Drama Actress races pits star turns against scene-stealers, the five nominees for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress are all leads: Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”), Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”), and Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”).
Our odds currently favor Taylor-Joy (82/25), who is predicted to add this award to a mantle already crowded with Golden Globes and Critics Choice trophies. She is followed in order by Blanchett (4/1), Coel (4/1), Kidman (9/2), and Washington (9/2).
Kidman is a previous winner in this category, having bagged a trophy in 2018 for “Big Little Lies.” She also reaped bids for the TV movies “Hemingway & Gellhorn” (2013) and “Grace of Monaco” (2016). A victory this year would make her the fourth...

Fresh off his first-ever Critics’ Choice TV nomination, “Fargo” featured player Glynn Turman is gaining momentum at the Golden Globes. In the fourth installment of the acclaimed FX anthology series, the Emmy-winning veteran actor played Doctor Senator, the sage right-hand man to Chris Rock’s leader of a Black crime syndicate in 1950s Kansas City. Though still predicted to miss the final list of nominees, Turman just broke into our top ten contenders in the Globes TV Supporting Actor category.
Turman currently sits in 10th place in our combined odds in this catch-all category up an impressive 12 spots since “Fargo” aired its season finale in November. As expected, HBO, which is challenging the Hollywood studios with its smart programming, luring away both talent and audiences from the big screen, dominated the 64th Emmy nominations, for the 12th year in a row. This time they nabbed 81, led by movie star two-hander "Hemingway & Gelhorn," starring Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman (15 nominations). I'm not the only cinephile who would rather stare at “Boardwalk Empire” or “Game Change” (which both received 12 nominations) or “Game Of Thrones” (11 Nnminations) or Martin Scorsese music biodoc “George Harrison: Living in the Material World" (6 nominations) or "Girls" (5 nominations), for which the magnificent Lena Dunham earned nominations for comedy writing, directing and acting, than go out to most movies. "We spent about eight years, producer Peter Kaufman and I, trying to develop this project eventually." As time went on, Kaufman became enthralled by Hemingway and Gellhorn, who were married from 1940-45. Photos:
