Exclusive: Filmmaker Joshua Coates has secured rights to the life story of Abraham Bolden, the subject of the 2008 autobiography The Echo of Dealey Plaza. Bolden made history as the first Black U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to the White House detail, where he guarded President John F. Kennedy who had personally appointed him in 1961.
Coates has written the screenplay for the movie The Unseen Shield and will also direct the film, which is currently in pre-production with his producing partner Fetteroff Colen.
Bolden, a U.S. Secret Service agent stationed in the Chicago office, first met Kennedy while on assignment in that city. Bolden had played a key role in thwarting an assassination plot in Chicago months before JFK was tragically assassinated in Dallas. Thanks to Bolden’s investigation, Kennedy canceled a planned trip to Chicago, where he was set to address supporters of his 1960 election campaign.

Filipino director Yam Laranas' (Sigaw, The Echo) The Road just got a little bit longer and a lot eerier with the release of these four striking new stills. They don't contain the gore we saw in our last look at the film, but they certainly convey a lot of atmosphere. "A twelve year old cold case is reopened when three teens are missing in an abandoned road. In the course of the investigation, deeper and gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered. After more than two decades, the secrets of the haunted road may finally be revealed." Carmina Villarroel, Marvin, Agustin, Tj Trinidad, Rhian Ramos and Barbie Forteza all star. The first of the three episodes of Yam Laranas' The Road is the most reminiscent of the atmospheric thrills of Sigaw (The Echo, 2004). One night in 2008, three teenagers (Barbie Forteza, Lexi Fernandez and Derrick Monasterio) find an abandoned dirt road to practice driving. As they move further from the junction, a suspicious red car passes by them every so often. After noticing that the red car is without a driver, they hurriedly find their way back to the junction, but to no avail. They are trapped, and continuously haunted by the mysterious red car and a woman whose bloodied head is covered by a plastic bag. The episode, set mostly at night in an abandoned road lighted only by the moon...

The thing that I loved the most about “The Echo” director Yam Laranas’ latest supernatural chiller “The Road” is that it’s quiet. Very quiet. Oh-so quiet, even. When the characters have nothing to say, they keep their mouths shut. No idiotic one-liners, no pointless pop culture references — just silence, plain and simple. And while that may sound more than a little silly to some, it’s actually quite refreshing. Sometimes it’s these eerie silences and the extended dialogue-free moments that add some weight to the atmosphere, particularly when the filmmakers are trying their best to generate a heaping helping of nail-chewing suspense. Not that Laranas and company have any problems causing the hairs on the back of your neck to stand straight up, mind you. The story unfolds over three interlocking chapters, each of which draw you deeper into Laranas’ impossibly unnerving universe. After opening with what appears...

Good ghost stories are pretty hard to come by these days. The keyword in that sentence, of course, is “good”. There’s certainly no shortage of potential chillers on the market, though most of them are either no-budget “Paranormal Activity” knock-offs or artsy-fartsy supernatural dramas that are heavy on boredom and extremely light on scares. “The Echo” director Yam Laranas’ genre effort “The Road”, however, has the potential to stand out, as evidenced by the trailer embedded below. Well, hello there ... When director Yam Laranas first rose to international attention in 2004 it was with his moody and atmospheric horror picture Sigaw. Though seen by only a few by virtue of coming towards the end of the J-horror rush and by being from The Philippines - where most fans were not accustomed to looking for this sort of fare - it was hailed as a significant work of that wave by those who saw it. Laranas is a true artist with light and shadow and though he was working with many familiar tropes in that film he approached them from a fresh angle and ended up with a film that burrowed in deep. Sigaw landed Laranas the job of directing an English...

A typical ghost story that's not so typical.
An ex-con who has just been released from prison and is trying to put his life back together moves into the apartment where his mother died some months ago. Almost immediately, he begins hearing strange noises and seeing strange visions. His problems become worse when he sees that his neighbor, a cop, is abusing his wife and child. Not wanting to violate his parole, he is torn as to whether to get involved or keep to himself.
On the surface, it might be easy to dismiss The Echo as a typical haunted house story, but then you'd be missing out on a solid, if not somewhat predictable film that offers some real chills.
What I really liked about this movie was the fact that the main character who's getting terrorized is a 'tough guy' which is something...

Not much is known about director Yam Laranas’ The Road as of late, but the director has sent over the first teaser poster as a Killer Film exclusive as well as confirming to us that Johan Söderqvist, who scored Let the Right One In, will score The Road. Carmina Villarroel, Rhian Ramos, Tj Trinidad, and Wendell Ramos star. On Laranas’ blog, he’s offered a few cryptic words on the project: “You drive. You get lost. You are alone. I will try to relax because I feel that my head is spinning due to the non-stop bombardment of imagery that I want to see through my lens.”

Twitch has been keeping an eye on The Philippines' Yam Laranas for quite some time now. Laranas made a big impression in 2004 with atmospheric ghost story Sigaw - a picture he would later remake in English as The Echo. Director Yam Laranas made waves around the world several years ago with his atmospheric ghost story Sigaw, a film that came late in the recent wave of Asian horror titles but made a big impression. Laranas would later helm the American remake of Sigaw - an underseen little picture called The Echo - before heading back home to Manila. Laranas turned up again last year with creature feature Patient X and now he's back at it with a film he's keeping shrouded in mystery as long as possible. What we know for now is that it will be a ghost story, albeit one that Laranas says will adopt and unusual structure. Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Trailer and poster for the movie via Bloody-Disgusting below. Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”: After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself. He then discovers that the murderers are Aswangs (folkloric Filipino vampire-like creatures) and they pose a deadly threat not only to him but also for the entire town. From the producers of The Ring and The Grudge comes, one of this years most suspenseful and chilling films, The Echo. Seriously, I honestly approached this movie with some major skepticism as I do much of the wave of Asian/American remakes, but this one actually scared me in some scenes. The Echo is definitely worth a glance!

Being that Patient X is writer/director Yam Laranas' sophmore feature after the atmospheric Sigaw there is some anticipation for it among followers of Filipino genre cinema (which has indeed been booming lately). You’ve got to say this: They work fast in The Philippines. Writer-director Yam Laranas - best known in these parts for atmospheric horror picture Sigaw - is still hard at work on his upcoming Patient X and already the first teaser has arrived. He reunites here with his Sigaw star Richard Gutierrez for a film built around the legendary aswang - a creature from Filipino folklore that hunts human prey and feeds on their entrails. With his English language debut The Echo soon to hit DVD in North America, Filipino director Yam Laranas is hard at work on his latest picture - a horror picture titled Patient X. Now in production with an October release planned, this promises to be a full blooded, Filipino creature feature based around the legend of the aswang - a human-like creature that feeds upon the entrails of its victims. If all goes according to plan this will be very bloody and feature dominantly practical effects. Though there’s no trailer available yet Laranas has just released a new poster and still shot, both of them featuring shots from the in-progress shoot. And if you want to know why we love Laranas’ work so much, just take a look at these things. The man is one of the best DPs working today and he brings an incredible visual sense to everything he does.

Though it's been completed for nearly two years now, there hasn't been a single peep about any release plans for Yam Larana's American redux of his own film The Echo. Thankfully all that silence hasn't stopped several stills from popping up online at the film's Facebook page!
The film, starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon, and Kevin Durand, centers around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.
Check out the stills by clicking the image below, and then dig on the special promotional trailer we've included as well. Stay tuned for news regarding the film's release. As soon as we get it, you will too!

It's been a long, long, long time since The Echo, Yam Laranas' remake of his own horror film was completed. Angelica Locsin Colmeanares, commonly known as Angel Locsin, was born on April 23, 1985 in Bulacan, Philippines. She was the second child. Her parents were divided when she was fourteen and she has since lived with her father. Angel’s profession in show business began after she was spotted by a talent scout while shopping at Sm Mall. She auditioned for a number of commercials and shortly after she landed an agreement with Gma Network. She first appeared in Click, a teen-oriented program on the Gma Network, as the tomboyish Charley where she was matched with Railey Valeroso. She became widely known when she initially appeared on the cover of FHM Philippines. She also appeared on Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw Pa Rin, All Together Now, and Love to Love. In 2004, Locsin acknowledged what is a well thought-out of her biggest break yet. She starred as one of the lead stars in the Mulawin.

Get ready for an Asian horror remake that's as unconventional as can be, riddled with things we have never seen before! In The Echo we're just getting more unsuspecting people who put their noses where they shouldn't be and end up being fodder for a lingering curse! Nope. Nothing familiar about that plot at all!
The good news is at least the director of the original The Echo, Yam Larana, is back for the American redux starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon and Kevin Durand.
The plot centers around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.

Yam Laranas shot his original horror movie “The Echo” in 2004 and finished up an American remake of the same movie in 2008. The film stars Jesse Bradford as an ex-con who moves into a haunted apartment building and begins to hear sounds. A longer, more plot-heavy (i.e. voiceover narration) version of the trailer was posted last year (see that here). This one is a Korean version of the trailer, and is a slicker, less obvious but definitely more atmospheric cut. The bathroom stall scene creeps me the hell out, man. An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him. Starring Jamie Bloch, Jesse Bradford, Iza Calzado, Kevin Durand, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Carlos Leon, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Amelia Warner, and Louise Linton. Yam Laranas directs.

Ah, the sweet beauty of Montreal in July. For me there’s nothing like it. I love coming to this city every year when it’s at its very peak, and this year I couldn’t be happier simply because this trip came so close to not happening.
Upon arriving into the city on Wednesday night, my wife and I immediately headed to the post-Fantasia headquarters, The Irish Embassy. This is the same bar we hung out at last year, and I’m glad we’re back cause it’s a very cool place. While we waited for From Within to end, which according to Andy and Paul didn’t come nearly soon enough, we hung out with Mitch and Pierre, both programmers for the festival, as well as director Douglas Buck, who you may recall hooked us up with some very cool information about his next project, The Broken Imago,...

Long time Twitch readers may well remember us talking about Filipino horror film Sigaw a couple years back. Written and directed by Yam Laranas it came late enough in the run of Asian horror films – and in some ways played to the standard conventions of the genre enough - that many overlooked it but Sigaw was such a well crafted little gem of a film that introduced some subtle changes to the genre that I truly believe it is one of the last truly important films to come out of that initial Asian horror boom.
And so I have been tracking with great interest the development of the English language version of the film. Titled The Echo it again puts Laranas at the controls shooting a script adapted from his own by the writing duo of Eric Bernt and Shintaro Shimosawa. The result feels more like a riff on the...

- With a substantial increase in local funding and the continued financial support from corporate sponsorships, this festival is a big player, (perhaps the most prestigious of the festivals in the North American Fantasy Film Alliance (which includes (Nyaff, Austin's Fantastic Fest, Screamfest La, Phillies' Danger after Dark, Dead Channels from San Fran and Canadian cousin's Toronto After Dark). With their usual bubbling enthusiasm, festival programmer Marc Lamothe, co-director of international programming Mitch Davis (see below) and a slew of speakers presented the make up of this year's edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. Now in it's 12th year, the fantasy/horror/animation/experimental/short/Asian genre film festival feels like a family affair. They'll have their usual number of patrons coming in droves and their close linkage with local and world filmmaker community is paying off once again.
