'Simple is actually the hardest to do' by Amber Wilkinson
Kid Koala
Eric San says the origami scene was inspired by a meal with his mum. She turned a chopstick packet into a shape. 'I was holding it like it was a jewel in my hand,' he recalls Photo: Outsiders

Kid Koala – aka Eric San – makes a virtue out of simplicity with his debut animation. He employs an uncluttered clarity in Space Cadet to tell the story of a little girl, Celeste, who dreams of being an astronaut like her mother, and the guardian robot who has looked after her since her mum didn’t come back from one of her missions. As the time comes for her to prepare for her own space mission, they are both set for a fresh adventure

The Canadian’s sweet tale of love, caring for others and letting your imagination roam free premiered at Berlinale and has recently screened at Annecy Festival, where we...

Image
Considered one of the best actors to never win an Oscar, currently tied with Peter O'Toole for the record most Oscar nominations in an acting category without a win, Glenn Close's career is heralded as one of the best. From her Academy Award-nominated role as a feminist mother in The World According to Garpto joining the MCU in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, Close has almost done it all.

Now, as of June 22, 2025, one of her most famous and controversial movies is finding streaming success, officially joining the top 10 most-watched titles on Tubi in the US. That film is Fatal Attraction, the steamy bloodbath also starring Michael Douglas, that saw James Deardenwrite a feature-length adaptation of his 1980 short, Diversion. Marvel Unveils New White Black Panther: A Bold Twist in Wakandan Legacy
Image
The Marvel Knights: The World to Come collection has just launched with its first issue and is already revolutionizing social media and conversations among those who closely follow the comic book universe. And no wonder: the new bearer of the Black Panther mantle is an unexpected, controversial figure, and, for many, difficult to fit in. The reason? The new Black Panther is white.

Spoilers Ahead! The story, written by Christopher Priest and drawn by Joe Quesada, gets off to a strong start: T'Challa, the king of Wakanda, dies as an old man. But far from being a finale, his death is the starting point of an inherited, personal, and deeply political conflict.

Before his death, T'Challa leaves behind a complicated legacy. After Storm died in an event called the Race War, the former king of Wakanda made a drastic decision: to have a child with Monica Lynne, one of his former partners in the comics.

'Who Is This Person?': Michael Cera Meeting Jackie Chan Was Just as Awkward as You'd Expect
Image
Actor Michael Cera has appeared in a number of films throughout his career, including Superbad, Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. Cera’s breakout role came in 2003 when he began playing the son of Jason Bateman’s Michael Bluth, George-Michael Bluth, on the critically acclaimed hit series Arrested Development. However, it seems as though iconic actor and martial artist Jackie Chan hasn’t seen much of Cera’s work.

Cera, who is starring in the latest film by Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme, was promoting the movie in London recently and, per NME, had an interesting albeit awkward encounter with Chan. Chan was also in London to promote his latest film, Karate Kid: Legends, and he and Cera were both promoting their respective projects in the same building.

Dondi's Dickson Wong Chose Whether He Wants David Genat Or Parvati Shallow To Win Australian Survivor In Front Of David [Exclusive]
Image
During the second season of Deal or No Deal Island, the reality TV series that Joe Manganiello perfectly hosts became a must-see show. One of the main reasons why Dondi is one of Peacock's best shows is because of the second season's dominant alliance, The Family. The alliance included the Survivor Hall of Famer. Parvati Shallow, David Genat, who was confronted by Dr. Will Kirby, and Dickson Wong.

Since The Family enjoyed so much success together, it was fantastic to see David and Dickson reunite for an exclusive TheThings interview. During that discussion, Dickson revealed whether he wanted David or Parvati to win Australian Survivor: Australia V The World while talking in front of David.

Being Maria (Jessica Palud)

Last Tango in Paris was both a breakout role and turning point in the life and career of Maria Schneider––a traumatic filming experience that inspired her to become an advocate for women in the film industry, and the often redundant depictions of female characters in cinema. Her steadfastness and increasing ability to not suffer fools gladly after her experiences with Bernardo Bertolucci and Marlon Brando saw her walk out on several major directors midway through shooting, earning her a reputation for being difficult, frustrations largely ignored as this behavior coincided with her own battles with mental health and drug addiction, both of which were weaponized as reasons to not hire her. Any writing on Schneider characterizes her...

‘Harry Potter’s New Dumbledore Isn’t Worried About J.K. Rowling’s Scandal, and That’s a Problem
Image
The Harry Potter saga is once again all set to make its splash in the fandom as new castings for the upcoming television series from the franchise continue to dominate the headlines and leave fans either excited or disappointed with the turn of events. That said, the latest one about the new Dumbledore’s casting, for one, is inevitably making everyone concerned.

As reports of John Lithgow joining the lore as the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry surface, fans are concerned because the actor recently confessed that he isn’t worried about author J.K. Rowling’s scandal. This is a problem because while he is famous for his trans roles, Rowling is equally infamous for her comments on the trans community.

"Why Is This a Factor?": 'Harry Potter' Series Actor Reacts to J.K. Rowling Backlash
Image
Despite stepping into one of the most iconic roles in the wizarding world, John Lithgow is learning there’s a lot more baggage than just spellbooks and wands when it comes to HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Lithgow, who has been cast as Albus Dumbledore in the new TV adaptation, recently admitted that when he agreed to join the show, he wasn’t thinking about the firestorm of controversy surrounding franchise author J.K. Rowling. In fact, speaking to The Sunday Times, Lithgow revealed he was initially focused on something else entirely: mortality.

"It was a big decision because it’s probably the last major role I’ll play," Lithgow shared. "It’s an eight-year commitment, so I was just thinking about mortality and that this is a very good winding-down role."

But after his casting was announced, Lithgow received an unexpected heads up. A text from "a very good...

Unfortunately for pretty much everyone, Jack Black is not joining the cast of the upcoming Weezer movie.

The poster features photos of Cuomo and Black, as well as the band, and reads: “Weezer costarring Jack Black.” Cuomo added in a caption, “Nope, it’s real.”

However, it appears that it wasn’t so real after all, and perhaps more of a manifestation or dream-casting situation,...

Film Analysis: The World (2004) by Jia Zhang-ke
Image
“The World” was Jia Zhang-ke‘s first film to gain official approval from the Chinese government and the first to take place outside his home province of Shanxi. It was filmed in and around an actual theme park in Beijing, Beijing World Park, which recreates world landmarks at reduced scales for Chinese tourists. This setting gives the film an overall ironic hypostasis while highlighting a number of themes regarding the advent of technology in China and globalization. Let us take things from the beginning, though.

The World is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas

The story, as usual in Jia’s films, revolves around a group of people, this time, migrant workers employed at Beijing World Park, a surreal microcosm of the world’s most famous landmarks. Two of these workers, Tao, a dancer, and Taisheng, a security guard, are a couple, but as the story begins,...

Jia Zhang-ke Reflects on Independent Filmmaking, Co-Productions, and Cinema’s Role in Society
Jia Zhang-ke in A Touch of Sin (2013)
Renowned Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke held a masterclass during Fica Vesoul, offering insights into his journey, the evolution of independent cinema in China, and the socio-political role of filmmaking. Known for capturing the realities of contemporary China, Jia spoke candidly about his early influences, creative challenges, and his vision for the future of cinema.

From VHS Tapes to Independent Filmmaking

Jia’s passion for cinema began in his school years, watching films in small VHS cabins outside the official circuit. This early exposure to Hong Kong and Taiwanese cinema, including King Hu, Johnny To, and Ann Hui, shaped his cinematic sensibilities. However, his true awakening came in 1991 when he watched Chen Kaige‘s “Yellow Earth“, a film that revealed to him how cinema could express social reality beyond traditional storytelling.

His first feature, “Xiao Wu”, was made without script approval or official authorization—a defining moment in his commitment to independent filmmaking.

Outlander Season 7 & 8 Update Confirms Which Books Will Be Covered In The Final Episodes

Outlander showrunner Maril Davis reveals which novels seasons 7 and 8 will adapt. Davis and Gabaldon opened up to The Direct about what to expect from the second half of Outlander season 7. This Cult-Favorite Movie Trilogy Is Hiding More Connections Than Even Die-Hards Know About
Image
Few directors are as beloved for their unique and dynamic style as Edgar Wright, whose fast-paced and quick-witted films all brandish his distinct flair. Known for films such as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World a feverishly humorous graphic novel adaptation, and Last Night in Soho a stylish psychological thriller, Wright's signature directorial vision isn't limited simply to one genre or type of film. His unique approach to filmmaking is best exemplified in the Cornetto Trilogy, also known as Three Flavours Cornetto. The Three Flavours Cornetto consists of three films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End a trio of eccentric, expectation-subverting films. Though these movies are considered a trilogy, they don't actually share a continuous storyline or even the same continuity. Instead, Wright's Cornetto Trilogy is connected through a series of cheeky Easter eggs, shared themes and narrative structure, and a loving and daring approach to their respective genres.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired the latest film from China’s great auteur Jia Zhang-ke, “Caught by the Tides.” The film premiered in competition at Cannes in May 2024.

98 years walking on this earth and over 70 of those working in the industry that he and we all love. How do you talk about a man who had his hands in everything and gave us so much? He was an honorary Oscar winner and heavily involved in the Academy itself. He gave us New Concorde and New World Pictures. Roger Corman was a master of the independent and low budget film and known lovingly as the King of Cult. He gave countless actors, writers, and directors their start and was still making appearances right up to his passing. Theres so much to go over but I think that the best way to honor the man is to bring this video in on time and underbudget, bonus Corman points if we can re-use some of the footage from this one in another one of our videos. Fallout 4: Which Faction Should You Choose In The Main Story?
Image
Choosing a faction in Fallout 4 shapes the Commonwealth's future and involves complex moral decisions. The Minutemen, Railroad, and Brotherhood of Steel offer "good" endings, while the Institute presents an "evil" one. Recent Fallout lore pins the Brotherhood's return to the West Coast as the likely canon ending of Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 has four distinct and unique factions that drastically alter the future of the Commonwealth, which brings up the issue of which one to join. Fallout 4, released in 2015, was the franchise's first step towards modern gameplay. New mechanics and systems like in-depth crafting/modding along with faster movement drastically change how the game feels. These changes performed well enough to be carried on to the prequel, Fallout 76, while still providing a memorable story experience.

After the main story of Fallout 4, the game received six post-launch DLCs. However, three focused heavily on the game's settlement-building system, and though this system was arguably the game's best addition,...

Image
Screen Rant presents a clip from the documentary Kiss the Future featuring Bono and The Edge from U2. The documentary highlights U2's long-lasting impact on global events and their commitment to raising awareness for important causes. Kiss the Future not only sheds light on the dangers of nationalism, but also points to U2's longevity and relevance in the music industry.

Kiss the Future is a new documentary about an underground artist community during the 1990s siege of Sarajevo that inspired a U2 concert, and Screen Rant has a clip featuring the hit band themselves. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was a major locale in the Bosnian War and was ultimately besieged for a whopping four yearsfrom April 1992 to February 1996. During that time, a vibrant community of artists utilized art and music to affect change, which inspired a U.S. aid worker to propose that U2 help raise awareness of the conflict.

Jia Zhang-ke in A Touch of Sin (2013)
After five long years, “Have a Nice Day” director Liu Jian returns to New York with his newest project, “Art College 1994.” This hotly-anticipated feature checks off all the boxes. It cements Liu Jian's stamp as a rising animation auteur in China; it marks the completed its world tour at Berlinale, Annecy, New York Asian Film Festival, and more; and, what's more, the film features a star-studded voice cast that spans intellectuals, musicians, and other movie directors, including Jia Zhangke and Bi Gan.

Here, we catch a glimpse of a group of students at the Chinese Southern Academy of the Arts. Art College 1994 Review: Liu Jian’s Animated Idyll of Youth in Repose, and Revolt
Image
There’s a beautiful scene in Jia Zhangke’s 2004 film The World in which the protagonist, Tao, crosses paths with an industrial worker nicknamed Little Sister on the rooftop of an unfinished building. They chat aimlessly beneath towering spires of exposed rebar until a massive plane soars overhead, drowning out their voices. “Tao, who flies on those planes?” he asks, to which she responds, “Who knows…I don’t know anybody who’s ever been on a plane.”

It’s this precise contrast of stasis and flux, of the sublime and the quotidian, of simple personal dreams swallowed up by massive national ambitions, that characterizes Liu Jian’s newest feature, Art College 1994. Jia also lends his voice to one of its characters: Gu Yongqing, a “roving artist abroad” who speaks of “the mysterious power of art” during a visiting lecture at the titular art college. This is Liu’s third animated feature film,...

Will a Baby Driver Sequel Ever Happen?
Image
Edgar Wright's Baby Driver sequel has the potential for a bold and radical storyline departure from its predecessor. The sequel could explore Baby's past, delving into his trauma and character depth while keeping the franchise alive. However, the safer choice for the sequel may follow a linear plot similar to the first film, impacting its potential growth.

A talented director with a fair number of acting credits behind his name, Edgar Wright has quietly built up a sterling reputation as a filmmaker who makes great movies. Although he currently only has eight features to his name as a director, they include highly popular films like Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, with Wright also having worked as a writer on films like The Adventures of TinTin and the McU's Ant-Man. Among his successes as a director, one of his most notable films came in the form of 2017's Baby Driver,...

The People's Joker Star Vera Drew Reveals Cesar Romero's Influence
Image
The People's Joker is a new, satirical take on the story of Batman's arch-nemesis, and it features director Vera Drew starring as a reimagined version of the Joker. Though the movie's plot is heavily inspired by Todd Phillips' Joker, it was late actor Cesar Romero who had the biggest influence on Drew's performance.

In a chat with Cbr's Kevin Polowy, Vera Drew opened up on the development of The People's Joker. When asked about her influences on her portrayal, Drew said she drew heavily from Cesar Romero, who portrayed the Joker in the original Batman series from the 1960s. Drew went on to explain why Romero's Joker is her favorite portrayal of the character, and that played into how she personally played the iconic supervillain.

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Reminds Us That Brie Larson Should Do More Comedy
Image
Since her MCU debut in 2019, Brie Larson has been one of Marvel's heavy hitters in her role as Captain Marvel. Returning to the big screen this year in The Marvels, Larson continues to be a superhero juggernaut as one of the most powerful and underappreciated Avengers today. But before she was shattering spaceships and going toe-to-toe with Thanos, Larson had already achieved immense critical recognition, winning an Academy Award in the heart-wrenching 2015 film, Room. From action blockbuster to personal drama, Brie Larson has demonstrated immense range in her acting skills — but those might not even be her best roles. Before both of those films, Larson appeared in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World as the over-the-top rock star, Envy Adams. Larson's performance in that highly stylized and exaggerated movie makes a strong case that her filmography should include plenty more of these roles, as her combination of acting talent,...

‘The World According to Allee Willis’ Review: A Fascinating Doc Honors a Creative Force of Nature
Image
The biographical documentary is a genre that lends itself to a reliable storytelling formula. First, we look back on the origins of the subject; we are introduced to some of the key figures that helped them along the way; we are shown the beginning of their career all the way to the end, and are then left to contemplate their legacy.

Due to the predictability of this format, these documentaries can often come off as by-the-numbers, taking us on a telegraphed emotional journey intended as a crowdpleaser. But every once in a while, there’s a subject who is so unique that their story elevates the formula. Allee Willis is one such subject, with a life story that’s energetic, colorful and invigorating to witness. Director Alexis Manya Spraic crafts a documentary that strives to be just as fascinating as its subject.

The World According to Allee Willis, which premiered at SXSW earlier this month,...
