The horror-comedy has always been an interesting subgenre. Effectively working on a spectrum, with horror at one end and comedy at the other, it allows for so many unique approaches that lean more towards one genre or the other, or are planted squarely in the middle. It's fair to say that the majority of horror-comedies lean closer to the comedy side of things, and that their ultimate goal is to be the cinematic equivalent of a carnival ghost train. The likes of Scary Movie made this the popular choice, while movies like Hatchet strike more of a balance between the elements. Spooky, yes, but more lightly entertaining, and never too serious.

Australian indie horror director Sean Byrne has a new shark attack film that has struck global distribution deals. Dubbed a "shark-meets-serial-killer" movie, the film will see a shark-obsessed serial killer (Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney) abduct a free-spirited surfer named Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone). He takes her out to sea in a boat, where she has to figure out how to escape before he "ritualistically feeds her to the sharks below," according to the plot. Joining the cast is Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy), who will play Zephyr's boyfriend, Moses. It sounds like a clever plot.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was shot last year on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was written by newcomer, Nick Lepard, who also wrote Keeper, Osgood Perkins' new film following The Monkey. The majority of the theatrical rights to the international market have already been sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

Adam Green is best known for directing three of the four films that make up the Hatchet slasher franchise, but many fans feel that his best movie is actually the 2010 survival thriller Frozen. And while we’re anxiously waiting to hear when Hatchet 5 is going to go into production, it was welcome news when it was announced last week that Green is taking a step back into Frozen territory to helm a survival thriller called Ascent. Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast includes Inanna Sarkis (Marked Men), Gregg Sulkin (Six Triple Eight), Timothy Granaderos (13 Reasons Why), and Paris Berelc (Alexa & Katie).
When the project was first announced, it was under the title The Ascent, but it seems the “The” has been dropped. The first announcement also referred to the film as a shark thriller, providing the following synopsis: A group of friends arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding.

Inanna Sarkis (Boo 2! A Madea Halloween), Gregg Sulkin (“Runaways”), Timothy Granaderos (“13 Reasons Why”), and Paris Berelc (Hubie Halloween) will star in Ascent for director Adam Green, Deadline reports.
The survival thriller follows a group of friends attending a destination wedding in Europe who find themselves stranded on a hot air balloon 3,000 feet in the air.
A previous report suggests that shark-infested waters may be waiting below.
“I’m incredibly excited to be returning to the survival thriller genre,” said Green. “Ascent’s story about a recreational activity gone terribly wrong is going to play with people’s real life fears and be a total thrill ride for the audience.”
Production is set to begin shooting in Malta later this month under Simple House Films.

Shark movies are a breed of their own. Ever since Steven Spielberg turned many people off beach holidays, filmmakers have constantly attempted to keep the fear of sharks alive, with varying results. From the simple premise of Open Water, to the bonkers insanity of Sharknado and its many sequels, spinoffs and ripoffs, there is no denying that shark movies have their own place in the world. Now Frozen (not that one) and Hatchet director Adam Green is about to make everyone afraid to go to a wedding.
As reported by Deadline, The Ascent is described as following “a group of friends who arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding. The fun and games turn into a nightmare when they find themselves precariously suspended above shark-infested waters and in a battle for survival.” All sounds plausible and standard stuff, right?

Once upon a time, the most popular monsters of filmdom were linked to certain actors. Though other individuals would play these roles over time, ask any movie buff to name the performers best known for portraying Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, and they'll fire back with, respectively, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Karloff again, and Lon Chaney Jr. But while these roles were spoken for in the public's consciousness, one of these actors was famous, at least among seriously committed horror fans, for having played all four of Universal's marquee monsters -- and that actor was Chaney Jr.

Iconic actor Tony Todd has died at the age of 69, it has been confirmed. As reported by THR, the Candyman, Platoon, and Star Trek: The Next Generation star, who amassed in excess of 250 professional credits over the course of an astonishing, five decade spanning career, passed away on 6 November at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with illness.
Anthony Tiran Todd was born in Washington D.C. on 4 December, 1954 to Evetta Lyons Gaither. At the age of just three a young Tony Todd moved to Hartford, Connecticut where his auntie, Clara Elliston, took custody of him and nurtured his adolescent curiosity with the arts. Having enrolled Todd in summer acting courses as a boy, Elliston supported her nephew — artistically, financially, and emotionally — as his interest in theatre led to spells at both Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute in Connecticut and Trinity Repertory Company in Rhode Island.

After a storied legacy of nearly 45 years on screen, Candyman star Tony Todd has passed away at the age of 68. Todd holds a unique distinction in Hollywood in having over 200 acting credits to his name, though the horror genre was arguably what he was known best for. This not only stemmed from his carrying the Candyman mantle across its first three installments, but also thanks to his supporting roles in everything from the Final Destination franchise to Hatchet and beyond.

The horror genre has proven to be incredibly versatile since its creation, but it has surprisingly little crossover with action movies. Where science fiction, fantasy, comedy, and even Westerns have been merged with the genre, one of the most underrated mash-ups is that of horror and action. Despite a great deal of violence in both genres, there's a relatively short supply of horror-action movies, despite their tendency to yield great results.
Horror action movies typically pit heavily armed heroes against the stuff of nightmares, sending protagonists on a mission to take on zombies, aliens, ghosts, and more. The two genres naturally go hand-in-hand, and these movies allow audiences to see horror heroes as something other than mere helpless victims for a change. Allowing good and evil to go toe-to-toe in direct combat allows for some great fanservice, and some movies prove this better than others.

Fan-favorite Friday the 13th star Kane Hodder and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Bill Moseley unite for a new holiday horror experience.
Breaking Glass Pictures' latest horror-comedy, Hayride to Hell, recently unveiled its first full trailer on YouTube. The film follows the brutal one-man crusade led by Moseley's Farmer Sam against the cold, calculating community members who are out to steal his land. Hayride to Hell stars Hodder as Sheriff Jubel, with Graham Wolfe portraying Deputy Dermot Nixler. The film also features appearances by Shelby Hightower, Chris James Boylan, Allyson Malandra, Brooke Stacy Mills, and Denise Parella.

Hulu’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere premiered at the very beginning of the 2020 Covid lockdown, and although it was nominated for several big Emmys that fall, the miniseries has become very fuzzy in my memory. One thing I do remember, however, is that in selecting the daughters of Reese Witherspoon’s character, the casting team found a pair of young actresses — Jade Pettyjohn and Megan Stott — who absolutely bore an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoon.
Actually, I’d forgotten even that detail before sitting down to watch the new Netflix drama Penelope and immediately recognizing Stott — in large part because, if you’re going to make what is essentially an eight-part YA version of Wild, selecting a certifiable Reese Witherspoon doppelgänger as your lead makes a lot of sense.
Presumably, it isn’t wholly a coincidence. Penelope was created by Mark Duplass, who co-stars with Witherspoon on The Morning Show,...

1937. Emily (Gwyneth Evans) is close to becoming an adult but her forthcoming eighteenth birthday won’t be much of a cause for celebration as, due to chronic agoraphobia. she has never left the rambling, crumbling gothic pile which is her home. Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

Twitch is the biggest livestreaming platform in the world. But while it’s the gathering place for some of the world’s biggest creators and their millions of fans, it’s not profitable–and right now, employees are worried owner Amazon will let it become a “zombie brand,” abandoned without resources for future development (and with more rounds of potential layoffs chipping away at its staff).
We know all this because of internal documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, but now, new information is giving us more context about why Amazon executives might be taking a dismal view of Twitch.
Data from both Stream Hatchet and Streams Charts shows Twitch losing significant market share in Q2 2024 to competitors like Kick and YouTube–and we think Twitch’s update policy on simulcasting might have something to do with it.

“It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”
Hatchet‘s festival tagline — a quote from a major studio’s rejection of the film — served as a rally cry for horror fans. Despite its roots planted firmly in practical effects-driven ’80s slashers a la Friday the 13th, Hatchet felt fresh and exciting when it arrived in 2006; a gory but lighthearted reprieve from torturous studio horror littered with janky CGI and cheap scares.
Willed into existence by writer-director Adam Green based on a character he conceived as an 8-year-old summer camper, the Hatchet franchise centers on Victor Crowley — the hulking, vengeful spirit of a deformed boy that haunts the swamps of New Orleans. Kane Hodder brings a similar physicality to the role as he did to Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Parts VII-x, but Crowley is more ferocious. The casting...

Urban Legends and camp-fires are the perfect way to start a horror film. Point to an old abandoned house and say that a crazy old man still lives there, you must not shout his name or he’ll come and get you. Perfect start to a slasher right? This is the basic plot for Madman, an early 80s genre flick which has had the Arrow Video Blu-ray treatment.
When a group of camp counsellors are telling scary stories around a campfire, they are warned not to say the name of Madman Marz, a crazy old farmer who is still said to haunt the woods around his abandoned home, conveniently close to the camp.

Welcome back to Dead Time. A group of terrifying, hulking horror villains getting together to hunt ghosts may sound like the plot of a movie, but it’s not.
Meet the Hollywood Ghost Hunters. The paranormal team includes actor and stuntman R.A. Mihailoff, as well as actor and stuntman Rick McCallum, who co-founded the group with actor Kane Hodder more than a decade ago.
Hollywood Ghost Hunters co-founder Rick McCallum has been an actor, stuntman, and stunt coordinator for more than 42 years. He’s worked on countless horror movies like Deepstar Six (1989), DarkWolf (2003), and the Hatchet series under makeup in character and coordinating the stunts on set. When McCallum discovered his longtime best friend Kane Hodder shared his love of the paranormal, they decided to form the paranormal team Hollywood Ghost Hunters with friend and fellow actor R.A. In A Violent Nature subverts typical slasher tropes by telling the story from the killer's perspective, creating a surprisingly sympathetic protagonist. The movie's unusual storytelling style enhances the impact of its brutal death scenes, making it a savage slasher film unlike traditional ones. Despite the lack of tension and predictability in the storyline, the eerie atmosphere and haunting setting of the film keep viewers on edge throughout.
While In A Violent Nature might technically follow a standard slasher template, the subversive horror movie changes the perspective of its story. As the main characters of 1996s Scream famously noted, horror movies have a fairly rigid set of genre tropes they can sometimes rely on heavily. Specifically, slasher movies are often seen as trashy fare where partying teens are picked off one at a time by a seemingly unstoppable masked killer who doesnt talk but does come up with increasingly elaborate and...

Dear Mr. Henshaw offers a unique twist on kids' books with a diary-style narrative and poignant themes of divorce and longing. Wayside School Is Falling Down is a clever, absurd book with sly humor and deeper messages hidden beneath the wacky stories. Hatchet teaches resilience and growing up through the story of a stranded 13-year-old in the Canadian wilderness, tackling tough emotions.
Despite hitting the height of their popularity decades ago, there are a number of classic kids' books from the 1980s that are still well worth reading today. Kids' books and TV shows are often erroneously dismissed as being frivolous and fluffy, full of easy stories of colorful characters. While that's certainly true, the best kids' books whether for young kids or for teenagers mix messages with deep meaning among the elements geared for a younger audience.
The very best weave stories that last for generations, both resonant and relevant no matter the era.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.
Victor Crowley was played by stuntman Kane Hodder, perhaps best known for playing the masked killer Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,...

Anime offers unique space opera adventures comparable to the grandeur of Star Wars. Anime series like Astra Lost in Space, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Space Dandy provide diverse narratives for sci-fi fans. Space Battleship Yamato and Captain Harlock offer compelling modern and classic space pirate adventures similar to Star Wars.
The Star Wars franchise may provide fans with a rich setting full of exciting worlds and battles, but anime is no slouch in the Space Opera genre, either. In fact, many fans have come to love the exotic ships and characters brought to life with pen and paper. For those wanting something new, anime has no end of unique worlds and battles between good and evil.

Danielle Harris feels sad to see her former The Last Boy Scout co-star, Bruce Willis, struggle with ongoing health issues. Harris is writing a book that includes stories about her experiences with Willis on the set of the 1991 film. Harris reveals that Willis once told her, "Kid, this is my movie, don't upstage me," which she now sees as a compliment.
Danielle Harris can’t help but feel “sad” for her one-time co-star, Bruce Willis. As a child actor, Harris starred alongside the Hollywood icon in director Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout. 33 years later, though, Harris finds it “devastating” to see Willis struggle with his ongoing health issues. Harris said in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant:
“Devastating, it's sad. I feel the same way about Christina Applegate, to see these stars that, in your mind, are going to be there forever, and then you start to see them age or pass.

Danielle Harris is an absolute legend in the horror space, having been a part of the genre for nearly 40 years. She always stuck out as a child actor in films such as Halloween 4 and The Last Boy Scout. But she continued that success into her adulthood with films like Hatchet and the Rob Zombie Halloween films. I was lucky enough to talk with Danielle about her latest horror film, Project Dorothy. She plays a rogue AI, so she’s just a voice here, but that’s also something she has plenty of experience with (she was Debbie on The Wild Thornberrys). While she’s a small part of the film, I was also able to talk with her about her podcast with Scout Taylor Compton and their planned trilogy of films. This was a great conversation; she gave some nice insight into the difficulties of acting in something you’re also directing.

Ok, I’ve thought about this long and hard, discussed with my local priest and therapist, and after much internal strife, I’ve decided it’s time. You hear a lot about rip-offs for franchises, particularly the big ones. We have Jaws rip-offs, Exorcist rip-offs, Halloween rip-offs, and more. What you don’t hear a lot about, and good lord do they exist, are the multiple rip-offs of Gremlins. Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. We got the fun and good with the Critters franchise, the bad with both Munchies and Hobgoblins,...
