Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) star as a budding couple embarking on a first date that goes terribly awry thanks to a twisty murder plot in Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon’s thriller Drop.
The suspenseful thriller sets its whodunnit in motion when widowed mother Violet begins receiving mysterious airdrops on her phone, lighthearted memes at first that quickly snowball into sinister threats, prompting Violet to commit murder before her loved ones suffer the price.
Landon, speaking with Bloody Disgusting at SXSW for the film’s premiere, shared the true origins that inspired Drop. He explains, “Our producers were on vacation; they’re in a restaurant, and they started getting all of these mysterious airdrops from somebody in the restaurant. They could not figure it out. They never figured it out. They never solved it, but that’s when they were like,...

I was lucky to attend SXSW in Austin, Texas this year. It marked my first time attending what’s quickly leapfrogged up the list of important festivals. It used to be that Cannes, TIFF, and Sundance were the major ones, but it can’t be denied that as the indie film scene has changed, the kinds of movies connecting with audiences just aren’t what they used to be. SXSW strikes an interesting balance between indie films and mainstream studio fare, albeit of a somewhat more elevated pedigree. It’s led to some high-profile premieres for the festival recently, including Air, Everything Everywhere All At Once and more.
This year, we got the premiere of the long-awaited The Accountant 2 (winner of the SXSW audience award), the latest Blumhouse thriller, Drop, plus the anticipated sequel, Another Simple Favor. So what were the best movies we saw? Here’s our list!

Plot: A widowed mother (Meghann Fahy) goes on a date with a handsome stranger (Brandon Sklenar) she’s been chatting with on dating apps. While at dinner, she receives an escalating series of anonymous messages, with them soon revealing that they are holding her sister and son hostage and will kill them unless she poisons her date.
Review: Christopher Landon’s Drop is a slam-bang thriller that absolutely brought the house down here at SXSW. A contained thriller in the vein of Wes Craven’s underrated Red Eye, Landon’s film hits all the right notes, giving him a solid, Hitchcock-flavored romp in the vein of his own Disturbia, that should be a big hit from Blumhouse when it comes out next month.
Contained thrillers, where most of the action is limited to one locale, have become increasingly in vogue, but Landon’s movie feels less claustrophobic as he...

In Christopher Landon’s Drop, a widowed mother bravely returns to the dating scene only to find herself caught in an awful game of cat and mouse. Following in the footsteps of films like Phone Booth, Red Eye and, more recently, Carry-On, this Blumhouse production, which premiered at SXSW before its theatrical release in April, balances its pulpy narrative with an escalating and terrifying tension. Landon’s command of suspense, coupled with a compelling romantic thread and delightful performances from Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) and Brandon Sklenar, make Drop a solid popcorn movie.
Like its cinematic predecessors, Drop‘s premise relies on compromised technology and nefarious anonymous actors. It’s best experienced with little to no information, so for the spoiler-averse, it’s time to abandon this review.
During a first date dinner with Henry (Sklenar), a photographer she met on an app, Violet (Fahy) begins receiving annoying “digiDrops” from an unknown user.

The art of the "crowd pleaser" is alive and well in Christopher Landon's noose-tight Drop. Writers Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach pen a clever blend of technological paranoia and first-date anxieties in a one-location pressure cooker. The vibe is deliciously tense: think Grand Piano or Red Eye. Alfred Hitchcock is smiling on Down, and with good reason—it's tight, intense, and pure popcorn entertainment. Landon's latest is why we go to the movies: adrenaline-fueled escapism.
Meghann Fahy stars as Violet, a single Chicagoian mother with a traumatic past. Director Christopher Landon has a proven track record for helming zippy fun horror, from the Happy Death Day films to Freaky to last year’s YA horror-lite We Have a Ghost. Landon’s latest, Drop, continues that streak while expanding his oeuvre with a more mature effort that leaves behind the teen slasher gimmicks. This first-date gone wrong thriller serves as the filmmaker’s propulsive, infectious tribute to Wes Craven’s Red Eye, resulting in a highly stylized dramatic thriller that’ll leave you fist-pumping to “Yahtzee!”
Drop opens with a harrowing scene of domestic abuse that not only earns instant rooting interest for heroine Violet (Meghann Fahy) but helps inform the choices she’ll make when faced with unthinkable pressure. Like, for example, her extreme nerves when embarking on her first date since her abusive ex passed. After gentle coaxing and help from her sister Jen (Violett Beane), who...

From hijackings to mind games at cruising altitude, these in-flight thrillers will have you gripping your armrest.
The new Mark Wahlberg thriller now in theaters, “Flight Risk” caught my attention and I’m planning on seeing it this week. Wahlberg (who I always have time for) plays a pilot navigating an intense flight with an air marshal and a fugitive on board. Set against the backdrop of the Alaskan wilderness, the film promises high-altitude suspense and a ton of “not all is as it seems” twists. It got me thinking about why thrillers on airplanes are so powerful. Maybe it’s because each one of us has had a moment on a flight during major turbulence where the thought has crossed our minds… “If this goes down, there’s not a lot of hope.”
In short, the stakes are just so high, and there are plenty of movies that capture that tension.

Content warning: This article contains discussion of sexual violence. The politics of Wes Craven’s political thriller Red Eye don’t exactly jump off the screen. In fact they seem to have minimal effect on the film. In a shrewd bit of casting, Craven employed Rachel McAdams — still toweling off from her torrential success as Allie Hamilton in The Notebook — to play Lisa Reisert, a hardened hotel administrator caught in Cillian Murphy’s shady schemes. Murphy plays Jackson Rippner, an operative paid handsomely to perform high-leverage political violence — coups, assassinations, all the good stuff. Rippner stalks Lisa onto her red-eye flight back to Miami, where he threatens to kill her father (Brian Cox) unless she moves the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security (who is about to be a guest in her towering beachfront hotel) to a room with a clear shot for his vaguely Russian torpedo-strapped snipers.

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2024––another year in which he not only premiered a new film, but shot another and is prepping another to begin production shortly––he still got plenty of watching in.
Along with catching up on 2024’s new releases, he took in plenty of classics, including Opening Night, Jaws, Casablanca, All About Eve, The Conversation, Alien, and nine viewings of various Star Wars films. He also got an early look at Andrew Patterson’s The Rivals of Amziah King and after beginning production on Black Bag on May 7, he had a first cut on June 23.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy has been consistently churning out excellent performances for well over two decades now. From iconic franchises such as Batman to indie dramas like his recent film Small Things Like These, he has proven his immense acting abilities countless times. His frequent collaborations with Christopher Nolan display both his acting chops and his dedication to making quality films. He has taken on incredible roles in horror and sci-fi with films like A Quiet Place Part II and Sunshine, and even fun thrillers like Red Eye. No matter what the role is, Cillian Murphy always delivers.
The two projects he is perhaps best known for are the BBC/Netflix British crime drama Peaky Blinders and the zombie apocalypse horror film 28 Days Later. In Peaky Blinders, he plays a no-nonsense, tough-as-nails gang leader, and in 28 Days Later, he plays a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Carry-On!Following the success of Netflix’s new flight-based thriller Carry-On, an underrated movie in the same genre starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy from 2005 provides a captivating next watch. Rounding out Netflix’s string of holiday releases in 2024, Carry-On arrived on the streamer on December 13 as a massive hit, even drawing comparisons to Die Hard with its critical acclaim and thrilling moments. Carry-On stands out as one of Netflix’s strongest releases in 2024, with its success bearing similarities to the impressive achievements and popularity of the streamer’s November 2023 thriller Leave the World Behind. Plot: A mysterious traveler blackmails a young Tsa agent into letting a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.
Review: I will always have a soft spot for airplane thrillers. Whether it’s Red Eye, Air Force One, or even Die Hard 2, the airport/airplane is a dynamic setting. The cameras, the security, the massive amounts of people of all backgrounds moving through the space; there’s a lot of potential. Especially when it comes to a thriller. So I was excited to hear that we’d be getting a new airport action/thriller. Unfortunately, Carry On takes a very long time to get going and doesn’t have nearly enough action beats to justify the runtime.

Now that the Thanksgiving food coma is behind us, it's time to look at the joy and cheer of the holiday season, and there is no better way to do that than with some Christmas movie favorites. While films such as Home Alone and A Christmas Story are a go-to for many, other, more low-key choices have also moved up the ranks over the years. That has happened with the 2005 comedy-drama The Family Stone, a film that received mixed reviews upon release but was a financial success. In the years since its initial debut, the film has gained in popularity, even if it's a bit divisive due to some of the dramatic turns it takes despite its cheerful holiday setting.
A quick glance at the latest Prime Video chart shows that The Family Stone is currently ranked second, a strong showing as holiday movie watching kicks into high gear. Some...

Warning: contains major finale spoilers for ITV’s Red Eye.
By the end of ITV’s Red Eye, Richard Armitage’s character Dr Matthew Nolan had been awake for (approximate calculation) a gazillion hours. Even if he hadn’t been shot saving Hana (Jing Lusi) from that bullet, he’d still have ended the series in a hospital bed due to exhaustion-related organ failure and having blood sugar lower than the Mariana Trench.
Dr Nolan will pull through though, and when he does, he may require a lucid breakdown of what the hell just happened. From car crashes to stapler-surgery to a rogue CIA plot to end the Anglo-China nuclear partnership, all the way to that heroic bullet jump, here’s how everything landed after Red Eye’s surprisingly tight finale.
What Was on the Nano Sim?

Even if he hadn’t been shot saving Hana (Jing Lusi) from that bullet, he’d still have ended the series in a hospital bed due to exhaustion-related organ failure and having blood sugar lower than the Mariana Trench.
Dr Nolan will pull through though, and when he does, he may require a lucid breakdown of what the hell just happened. From car crashes to stapler-surgery to a rogue CIA plot to end the Anglo-China nuclear partnership, all the way to that heroic bullet jump, here’s how everything landed after Red Eye’s surprisingly tight finale.

In his post-The Hobbit years, actor Richard Armitage has carved out a genre niche for himself—a kind of typical thriller with him being the center of attention. He’s either accused of something or his wife has gone missing; it’s mostly along these lines. These thrillers are never great, but they are always watchable largely thanks to Armitage’s charismatic screen presence. They’re mostly adapted from Harlan Coben’s bestsellers, and they’re always on Netflix. ITV’s latest thriller, Red Eye, is not based on a Coben story, and it’s certainly not on Netflix, but with Armitage being the lead, it does follow the same pattern. And despite all the glaring logical flaws, the show is an entertaining watch from start to finish. Like most recent works of Armitage, it is very bingeable. What makes it unique, though? Well, Armitage doesn’t cheat on...

20 minutes in to Red Eye, a foot chase through Heathrow airport ends with a man making an impassioned plea outside a branch of Leon. He vaults over barriers like the kid in Love Actually and implores the crowd to film his testimony. Rightly wary of flash mob marriage proposals, the British holiday-going public are slow to act but get his message out: vascular surgeon Dr Matthew Nolan is being framed for murder and extradited to Beijing.
Is Nolan (Richard Armitage) guilty, or on the level? Is he being sacrificed by the British government to protect a valuable Chinese nuclear power deal, or is there a deeper conspiracy at work? DC Hana Li (Jing Lusi), the no-nonsense cop tasked with escorting Nolan on Flight 357, has six episodes to find out.

Walton Goggins and Lesley Sharp join us on this week’s show. Not together, of course, because the former is with us to chat Ghoul life in Prime Video’s Fallout and the latter is here in her capacity as head of MI5 in ITV’s Red-Eye.
And speaking of Red-Eye, we review that show, which sees Richard Armitage on the flight from hell, as well as Glaswegian BBC comedy Dinosaur and the return of Belfast police drama Blue Lights, also on the Beeb. Plus we record our first proper podcast in the new studio, run through our (somewhat belated) 100 Greatest TV shows list, and dispense with a listener question in record time.

She is one of the first east Asian actors to play the lead in a big British drama, and her new show Red Eye is a nerve-jangler. She discusses culture shock, sexism and the sheer joy of making Crazy Rich Asians
As a teenager, Jing Lusi was something of a wild child. She was smoking and drinking by the time she was 13, frequently ended up in detention at school and even got suspended for smoking on school premises. “I needed to let off steam,” she says. The actor was rebelling against her strict parents but also against the stereotype of east Asians as well-behaved, “dorky” students. Hers was one of the few Chinese immigrant families living in Southampton in the 90s. She just wanted to fit in. “I managed to get through school by adopting this persona of: ‘I’m wild and erratic, don’t pick on me because I’m not submissive.

Content warning: This article contains discussion of sexual violence. The politics of Wes Craven’s political thriller Red Eye don’t exactly jump off the screen. Really, they seem to have minimal effect on the film at all. In a shrewd bit of casting, Craven employed Rachel McAdams — still toweling off from her torrential success as Allie Hamilton in The Notebook — to play Lisa Reisert, a calloused hotel administrator caught in Cillian Murphy’s shady schemes. Murphy plays Jackson Rippner, an operative paid handsomely to perform high-leverage political violence — coups, assassinations, all the good stuff. Rippner stalks Lisa onto her red-eye flight back to Miami, where he threatens to kill her father unless she moves the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security (who is about to be a guest in her towering beachfront hotel) to a room with a clear shot for his vaguely Russian torpedo-strapped snipers.

Greg Gutfeld isn’t your typical Fox News personality. But he is turning in to something that is more traditional at the Fox Corp.-backed cable outlet.
Fox News is expected to announce that it recently closed a deal with Gutfeld to extend his contract, a move that spotlights the host’s importance to the network’s operations even if he isn’t in the mold of a Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. Under the pact, Gutfeld will continue his co-hosting duties at the roundtable show “The Five” as well as his 10 p.m. program, “Gutfeld!,” a looser take on the issues of the day that marks a bid by Fox News to woo the younger TV viewers who might watch late-night programs such as “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS or “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. The third anniversary of the 10 p.m. program arrives Friday.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn't always get it right. Actually, you can count on them to just about never get it right.
This is especially true of the lead acting categories, where voters often become prisoners of the moment and vote for the buzziest and/or showiest performance. This is how Al Pacino's chilling depiction of Michael Corleone's descent into pure, dead-eyed evil in "The Godfather Part II" gets passed over in favor of Art Carney's amiable portrayal of a lonely old man hitting the road with his pet cat in "Harry and Tonto." This results in overdue Oscars, which frequently create new injustices — like Denzel Washington's bravura turn as Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino's ceaseless hoo-hahing in "Scent of a Woman," which led to Washington getting his Best Actor trophy for his (admittedly entertaining) grandstanding work in "Training Day" (which cost...

You have to dig really deep into Rachel McAdams's filmography to find a movie that wasn't either critically acclaimed or loved by movie fans - and usually both. From notable romance period pieces like The Notebook, action thrillers like Red Eye, rom-com romps like Wedding Crashers, to flat-out hilarious comedies like Mean Girls and Game Night, there is no genre that the Canadian-born actress has not taken on and conquered. With her girl-next-door qualities combined with her terrific timing and 10-megawatt smile, McAdams has been one of the most successful and bankable performers of the 21st century.

Earlier today, we took a look back the Wes Craven-directed 2005 thriller Red Eye… so we figured, why not follow that up by taking a look at a remake of a Craven horror film that was released the year after Red Eye reached theatres? The movie we’re taking about is the 2006 version of The Hills Have Eyes (watch it Here), a remake of Craven’s 1977 classic. It’s time for this one to be revisited, and you can hear all about it in the embed above.
While the original film was written and directed by Craven, Alexandre Aja directed the remake from a screenplay he wrote with Grégory Levasseur. Here’s the synopsis: Bob Carter and his wife Ethel, along with five other members of the family, are heading for San Diego with their camper van. Cillian Murphy recently had some choice words for his film Red Eye (watch it Here), a Wes Craven-directed thriller that was released back in 2005. But he wasn’t entirely negative. So that got me thinking: Is Red Eye a good film? Or is it more in the so bad it’s good category? I personally saw Red Eye in theaters and have always had a soft spot for it. But if Oppenheimer‘s own Cillian Murphy has an issue with it, maybe it’s worth a second gander. So let’s see whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between as we revisit Red Eye in the video embedded above!
Scripted by Carl Ellsworth, who crafted the story with Dan Foos, Red Eye has the following synopsis: In the wake of her grandmother’s funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner at check-in.

Cillian Murphy considers Red Eye to be a B-movie and believes he didn't give a nuanced performance. Despite Murphy's opinion, Red Eye is actually an underrated thriller with strong performances from both Murphy and Rachel McAdams. Critics praised the film upon its release, with Roger Ebert specifically noting Murphy's ability to avoid cheesiness and keep the movie grounded.
Although Cillian Murphy isn’t too fond of his 2005 psychological thriller Red Eye, the thriller co-starring Rachel McAdams is an underrated genre gem. Cillian Murphy has an impressive career.
