Watch: 90-Minute Masterclass With Legendary Editor Walter Murch
Frequent Francis Ford Coppola collaborator and editor Walter Murch (he’s been there since 1979’s “Apocalypse Now” all the way through 2009’s “Tetro”) famously cuts his movies standing up because surgeons, cooks, and music conductors—all fields and processes that Murch has compared to editing—are standing as they perform their jobs. At last year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest, Murch stood in front of a crowd for 90 minutes for an editing masterclass, and the video has surfaced for your education. Building on the ideas he’s presented in documentaries like the great “The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing” and “Murch: Walter Murch on Editing,” Murch takes the festival crowd through a lecture and presentation on the history of editing and uses the 2013 Higgs-Boson particle documentary “Particle Fever” to explain the editing process. Sally Menke died this week, aged 56, after going hiking near the Hollywood Hills on a day that was extremely hot even by Los Angeles standards. Her sad death brings to a close the longstanding collaboration with Quentin Tarantino – Menke was the only editor with whom the writer-director has ever worked – that yielded some of the most exhilarating and accomplished films of the past 20 years. He once described her as "hands-down my number one collaborator", noting in an interview for the Grindhouse DVD that "I write by myself but when it comes to the editing, I write with Sally. It's the true epitome, I guess, of a collaboration because I don't remember what was her idea, what was my idea. We're just right there together."

Movie service provider Starz Entertainment Group has inked a multi-year sponsorship with the Hollywood Film Festival, including signing on to be the presenting sponsor of this year's festival, which will take place October 17-23. In addition, SEG will host the festival's closing party after the Hollywood Awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on Oct. 23. The move comes as the company seeks to strengthen its support and presence at major film festivals around the country. SEG, which has been associated with the HFF since 2004, will also present Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride: Hunter S. Thompson on Film, a look at the late gonzo journalist's influence on celebrities, politicians and other writers. This marks the third consecutive year SEG has presented one of their films at HFF. At last year's festival, they premiered Bullets Over Hollywood and in 2004, The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing.
