A Thing Called Love (2004)

A Thing Called Love

Outstanding

One of the finest TV dramas of 2004. Beautifully written by William Ivory, great acting by Paul Nicholls, the outstanding Liz White and company. Using a similar idea to Clocking Off, in which several characters' personal stories are played out over the weeks, this Nottingham-based drama is bound to get the odd Bafta at the next ceremony. The finale may have pushed every emotional button, even down to featuring a box of cute puppies, but despite the obvious manipulation of the viewer, it was heartbreaking. A second series can't come soon enough. If you haven't seen it, watching it on DVD may be a benefit as the various threads are tied together by episode six. A must see. 10/10

"A Thing Called Love" - "A Thing Called Genius" if you please!

"A Thing Called Love" should have been titled, "A Thing Called Genius". William Ivory's tale and take on love would warm the cockles of the stoniest of hearts. The acting from all concerned is purely breath-taking in this well written and beautifully scripted piece set with Nottingham as it's back-drop. It covers both tragically gritty drama and then comedically timed high points in one foul swoop and to it's well rounded maximum. It's a "will they won't they" tale of two friends, Gary (the extremely handsome Paul Nicholls) and Paula (the beautiful and talented Liz White) entwined alongside the trials and tribulations of their friend's often more complicated love lives. This series is gorgeous, fabulous, brilliant, marvellous, magnificent, amazing, wonderful, super smashing great and any other superlatives I have failed to mention here! It's my absolute favourite "lovely" drama ever and I wish that the BBC would re-release this piece of magic to DVD again!

Fantastic series

Everyone who saw this show gave it 10/10 but for some reason, it seems to have been forgotten about by the masses. It's not even listed on the Wikipedia page of Liz White or Paul Nicholl's.

I don't know if it was shown in a poor time slot (seemed ok to me) but it didn't appear to do as well as expected and a second series was never produced, which was disappointing for those of us who fell in love with the show and its characters.

I hope to one day manage to see it again.
