Actors don’t build the kind of eclectic careers enjoyed by Alan Cumming and Michael Urie without leaning into the unexpected.
Audiences are as likely to see them acting on the small screen, hosting the latest glitzy awards show (Cumming had the BAFTAs this year while Urie had the GLAAD Media Awards) or lighting up stages across New York, Los Angeles and London.
“I get to do this TV show, I just did a Broadway show, I’m producing a queer theater festival. If my life continues to be varied like that, maybe not quite as varied as Alan Cumming’s career, but if I get to go from a studio to a stage to a brain trust of people coming up with ways to expand queer theater, if I’m still doing that, I think that that would be fantastic,” Urie shared in the latest episode of “Visionaries,” TheWrap...

Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.
If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.
So if not quite every gem of the season is in the mix this Sunday,...

Winners of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards were announced at a ceremony on June 1, hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess. These awards are unique in that Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete together in the same categories.
Maybe Happy Ending was a clear favorite with Drama Desk voters, claiming six awards to become the winningest production of the ceremony. The show’s victories include the coveted Outstanding Musical prize and Outstanding Director for Michael Arden. Writers Will Aronson and Hue Park pulled off a clean sweep with wins for Music, Lyrics, and Book of a Musical.
The Drama Desks employ combined gender acting categories, with an expanded number of nominees. As such, they’ve decided to present two winners by default in each acting race. The best of Broadway and Off-Broadway were honored at the 2025 Drama League Awards and Nicole Scherzinger took home the most coveted acting award of the year!
The event took place on Friday afternoon (May 16) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.
While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.
Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

Winners of the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced today in a ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning NY1 reporter Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. In a competitive year for theater awards, both Maybe Happy Ending and Sunset Boulevard added important feathers to their caps on their march to the Tony Awards.
Nicole Scherzinger took home the Drama League’s highly coveted Distinguished Performance prize for her radical reinterpretation of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Actors can only win this catch-all performance award once in their careers.
The winner of this award repeats that victory at the Tonys more often than not. Last year, Sarah Paulson won the Drama League before clinching a Tony win for her role in the play Appropriate. Other recent Drama League winners who went on to win a Tony in the same year include Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge!), Bryan Cranston (Network), Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women), Ben Platt...

Before becoming the face of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t exactly sold on the idea of joining the show. She had doubts about whether she was cut out for the fast-paced, fashion-heavy world the series promised. In fact, she felt she wasn’t suited for that life at all, unsure if the glitz, glam, and nonstop attention aligned with who she really was off-camera.
But despite her hesitation, Parker took the leap, and the rest is HBO history. Looking back, it’s wild to think the woman who defined Carrie Bradshaw nearly passed on the role that changed everything.

Sutton Foster has always been Broadway’s shining star. But lately, it’s not just her stage magic making headlines—there’s been some behind-the-scenes buzz too, and it has everything to do with her rumored closeness to Hugh Jackman.
Ever since the duo teamed up for The Music Man, fans have been picking up on a little something extra between them. That sparkling chemistry didn’t just stay on stage—it seemed to follow them off it, and well, you know how fast the rumor mill spins when sparks are flying.
But before Jackman’s name started floating around in the gossip circles, Foster was happily married to screenwriter Ted Griffin. They were together for nearly a decade, and from the outside, it seemed perfect.
So when news of their split broke, around the same time Foster and Jackman were spending more time together, it caught a lot of people off guard.

‘Boop! The Musical’ leads 2025 Drama Desk Awards nominations; off-Broadway dominates play categories
Nominations for the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Wednesday by Tony- and Grammy-nominated actor Norm Lewis. Winners will be announced on June 1, at a ceremony taking place at NYU Skirball and hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess.
The Drama Desk Awards are unique in the landscape of New York theater, as they are the only place where Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete within the same categories. The nominating committee of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards comprises Chair Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Raven Snook, and Charles Wright.
The Broadway transfers of Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, English, Job, and Oh, Mary! were not eligible for these kudos, having already competed for their off-Broadway runs.

Forty-two productions are eligible for Tony Award nominations this year – the announcements come Thursday morning – making many of the categories very, very competitive. Will the movie and TV stars take over the awards just as they’ve done at the box office? Is there room in the major categories for the high-tech items like Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture Of Dorian Gray? And can anything stop Cole Escola and Oh, Mary! I wouldn’t bet on it.

Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. This week we discuss our (almost) final 2025 nominations predictions.
David Buchanan: Sam, we have been meeting every week for the past two months to discuss our Tony Awards predictions, but as more and more shows started opening this spring, I have felt less and less confident about my choices! This year seems especially competitive across musical and play categories, so let's go category by category and review our locks, snubs, and left-field choices.

Buchanan: I'm fairly confident about two of these musicals: Maybe Happy Ending and Dead Outlaw. They couldn't be more different, but they are the two best-reviewed original shows this season. Then I have Operation Mincemeat and Death Becomes Her in third and fourth. The fifth is causing me so much stress, and I'm debating between Buena Vista Social Club,...

Nominations for the 2025 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced Friday by Oh, Mary! stars Cole Escola and Conrad Ricamora. Winners for these kudos, which honor Broadway and off-Broadway productions, will be announced on May 12.
The musical Death Becomes Her dominated the pack with 12 nominations, more than any other show, followed by Maybe Happy Ending with nine citations. Stranger Things: The First Shadow led in the play categories with seven bids, followed by The Hills of California with six.
While there are no Tony Awards nominators within the ranks of the Outer Critics Circle, the list of nominations nevertheless provides important insight into what performances are registering with the industry during awards season. A major difference is that the Outer Critics Circle employs gender-neutral categories but still capped at five slots. So, the actors named here have muscled their way past a large field of competitors in an impressive showing of awards strength.

Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.

When Darrell D. Miller looks out at the crowd gathered to honor him at Variety’s Power of Law breakfast on April 9, he can be confident that none of the other entertainment attorneys in attendance have traveled a career path quite like his.
Like Miller, they may have attended a prestigious law school, boast an impressive job title at a venerable firm (he’s founding chair of the Entertainment & Sports Law Department at 108-year-old Fox Rothschild) and have decades-long records of brokering innovative deals for big name talent. But it’s safe to say no one else’s career was set in motion by an epiphany on Girgaon Chowpatty beach.
The year was 1986. Miller was playing the Jester in a production of the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” that was touring cities in India and Sri Lanka. He saw rows of sleeping bodies lined up on the side of the road,...

Six new Broadway productions opened in March, inaugurating the spring season and foreshadowing the 12 additional openings to come before Tony Awards nominations are announced. See below for a breakdown of how our official odds have changed since our last predictions update on March 6, as Gold Derby users, editors, and experts have been updating their predictions based on performances and critics reviews.

Purpose: Prior to opening, our users were only predicting a single nomination for this new American family drama for its Tony-winning featured actress Kara Young. Since the glowing critical response to playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' latest effort, it has surged with three additional expected bids for Best Play, featured actress Latanya Richardson Jackson, and director Phylicia Rashad. It certainly hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either, as its lead actor Jon Michael Hill and featured actor Harry Lennix are both within striking distance in sixth place in their respective categories.

Michael Urie earned consistent laughter in the recent revival of Once Upon a Mattress thanks to the mannered way in which his infantilized Prince Dauntless called for his mother. “But Maw-maw,” he’d cry out to Queen Aggravain (Ana Gasteyer) in a double-accented deadpan, leaving the audience in stitches. “I don't remember why it just came out that way,” admits Urie, “It just came out that way and people laughed and I said, 'Well, I'm going to do that every time!' It's one of those things that you become addicted to, that kind of a response.” (Watch our full video interview with Urie above.)
The actor is used to eliciting riotous responses from audience members with finely curated comedic bits. This is Urie’s second musical comedy in as many seasons, after starring as Sir Robin in another medieval-themed tuner, Spamalot, last spring. But as Prince Dauntless, one of...

Shrinking star Michael Urie has been tapped to host the Los Angeles awards event on March 27. And he said he’s “honored” to get the gig. “Our queer siblings across the country who are being unfairly persecuted and villainized deserve a night that reminds them that they’re not alone,” said the multi-hyphenate talent. “Media is one of the strongest tools we have to fight against stereotypes and hate. I am inspired by the power that art and media can have on society and proud to honor and celebrate our nominees.”
Urie will be joined at the event by a list of confirmed attendees including Maren Morris, Jay Shetty, Doechii, Cooper Koch, Nava Mau, Abby Wambach, Glennon Doyle, Rodrigo Reyes, Racquel Chevremont, Brandon Scott Jones, Jonathan Bennett, viral “holding space” journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist, the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Khalen Saunders and more.

The stage adaptation will include songs from Lynn’s career and stories from her life, some beyond the 1980 film’s ending.

If you’re one of the many who caught “Wicked” in a theater, you’ve probably attended a sing-along screening – albeit unintentionally. As a theater kid, I understand both sides; it’s hard not to croon the lyrics to a beloved show but given a choice between hearing you and a Tony winner belt the big number, you can understand why this is annoying to some.
Which is why Universal smartly set up official sing-along showings of “Wicked” starting Christmas Day. I had many questions. Would people sing along if given permission, or is it only the thrill of breaking the rules that appeals to them? What would the lyrics look like onscreen? How would the audience sound? Does it matter that I can’t hit a note to save my life and thus was always cast in the one non-singing role in musicals throughout high school?

This week, Elton John’s “Tammy Faye” musical closed on Broadway after only 24 previews and 29 regular performances. Although the show, about the rise and fall of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, concluded its run on Dec. 8 as the Rocket Man’s worst-performing musical in New York following blockbuster successes “The Lion King,” “Billy Elliot: The Musical,” and “Aida,” “Tammy Faye” is hardly the only original musical with a religious theme to shutter unceremoniously in the past decade-plus. With the notable exception of “The Book of Mormon,” with its nine Tony Awards and 5,000 performances and counting, audiences have been singing from a different hymn sheet than these faith-based offerings.
In 2010, John’s fellow Egot champion Alan Menken brought a musical adaptation of the Steve Martin film “Leap of Faith” to Broadway with Tony nominee Raúl Esparza as the show’s conman who poses as a pastor to swindle Kansas townspeople. Despite the...

30 years ago Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Sunset Boulevard” opened on Broadway, capping off a tumultuous journey from the West End which included the unceremonious replacement of its lead Patti LuPone with Glenn Close. The bumps along the way paid off, if not financially, then certainly in terms of awards, as it received an impressive 11 Tony Award nominations at the 1995 ceremony, winning seven. It didn’t hurt that there was only one other original musical, “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” and two musical revivals in contention that year.
Now three decades later a radically new version of “Sunset Boulevard,” abbreviated to “Sunset Blvd,” has opened on Broadway starring Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond, the silent film star yearning to make a comeback in the age of talkies. Gone is the impressive, massive set of Norma’s mansion at 10086 Sunset Boulevard, as well as her iconic turban and shimmering kaftan. Director Jamie Lloyd...

“Shrinking” star Michael Urie’s Episode 8 monologue explaining his compassion for Louis (Brett Goldstein) was the greatest gift he’s ever been given as an actor, he told TheWrap — though it was also the most challenging task he had to pull off.
“The hardest thing that I had to do was this big monologue where I explain my relationship with [Louis], this relationship that I sort of developed,” Urie said. “A couple of episodes later, I do the exact same monologue again, almost verbatim, like 98% verbatim to Jimmy. That was for me, like, the greatest gift I’ve ever been given as an actor for on television, for sure — and extremely challenging.”

Hugh Jackman is often looked to when people talk about some of the nicest people in Hollywood. Up until last September, the actor was also seen as a part of one of Hollywood’s most stable marriages with his now ex-wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

However, it seems that the actor splitting with his long-time wife might be a more complex issue than what fans were privy to, as the cause of the divorce simply has more to it than just personal growth (which was what the couple put out as a statement explaining the reason for their separation).

Rising star Rachel Zegler has her pick of work, from starring in Disney’s live action adaptation of “Snow White” to making her Broadway debut in “Romeo + Juliet,” but she’s ready to work with some non-human talent for a change. As part of Variety’s New York Issue, Zegler spoke with the publication about her career and the roles she hopes to take on, including being the main player in a Muppet movie.
“Michael Caine did it for ‘Christmas Carol,’” she said. “Tim Curry did it for ‘Muppet Treasure Island.’ I want to be the one!”
Other talent have taken up this mantle in recent history as well, with Ashanti playing Dorothy in 2005’s “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” and Jason Segel and Amy Adams starring in 2011’s “The Muppets.” Its most recent entry was a Halloween special in 2021 called “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” a tie-in with the famous Disney ride.
