Actors don’t build the kind of eclectic careers enjoyed by Alan Cumming and Michael Urie without leaning into the unexpected.

Audiences are as likely to see them acting on the small screen, hosting the latest glitzy awards show (Cumming had the BAFTAs this year while Urie had the GLAAD Media Awards) or lighting up stages across New York, Los Angeles and London.

“I get to do this TV show, I just did a Broadway show, I’m producing a queer theater festival. Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.

If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

The best of Broadway and off-Broadway were honored this past weekend at the 2025 Drama Desk Awards!

Audra McDonald, Jasmine Amy Rogers, and Sarah Snook all accepted the top acting prizes at the awards show on Sunday (June 1) at the NYU Skirball Center in New York City.

The event featured gender-free performance categories with each category featuring twice as many nominees as the former gendered ones. Each acting category also had two winners, with one category getting three winners because of a tie!

Audra and Jasmine won the awards for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical for their work in Gypsy and Boop! The Musical, respectively. Sarah won Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play for her work in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The second win in that category went to The Hills of California‘s Laura Donnelly, who wasn’t in attendance.

Maybe Happy Ending won big at the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards on Sunday night, earning a total of six trophies at the only awards show to recognize talent from Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off Broadway productions.

Hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess, the show unfolded at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, with all proceeds benefiting the Entertainment Community Fund. Performers from a range of theater productions were both nominated and on hand to present, including Nicole Scherzinger of Sunset Boulevard, Jonathan Groff of Just in Time and Jeremy Jordan of Floyd Collins.

Among its many accolades, Maybe Happy Ending, which stars Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen as robots who fall in love, earned Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical and Outstanding Music. Meanwhile, Outstanding Play went to Purpose, Outstanding Revival of Play went to Eureka Day and Outstanding Revival of a Musical went to Gypsy.

Winners of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards were announced at a ceremony on June 1, hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess. These awards are unique in that Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete together in the same categories.

Maybe Happy Ending was a clear favorite with Drama Desk voters, claiming six awards to become the winningest production of the ceremony. The show’s victories include the coveted Outstanding Musical prize and Outstanding Director for Michael Arden. Writers Will Aronson and Hue Park pulled off a clean sweep with wins for Music, Lyrics, and Book of a Musical.

The Drama Desks employ combined gender acting categories, with an expanded number of nominees. As such, they’ve decided to present two winners by default in each acting race. Tony Award frontrunner Sarah Snook claimed Lead Performance in a Play for The Picture of Dorian Gray, alongside fellow Tony nominee Laura Donnelly for The Hill of California.

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are enjoying their time together.

The event took place on Friday afternoon (May 16) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.

Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

Winners of the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced today in a ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning NY1 reporter Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. Nominations for the 2025 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced Friday by Oh, Mary! stars Cole Escola and Conrad Ricamora. Winners for these kudos, which honor Broadway and off-Broadway productions, will be announced on May 12.

The musical Death Becomes Her dominated the pack with 12 nominations, more than any other show, followed by Maybe Happy Ending with nine citations. Stranger Things: The First Shadow led in the play categories with seven bids, followed by The Hills of California with six.

While there are no Tony Awards nominators within the ranks of the Outer Critics Circle, the list of nominations nevertheless provides important insight into what performances are registering with the industry during awards season. A major difference is that the Outer Critics Circle employs gender-neutral categories but still capped at five slots. So, the actors named here have muscled their way past a large field of competitors in an impressive showing of awards strength.

The hit Broadway musical Death Becomes Her starring Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard leads the list of nominations for this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards, the organization announced this morning.

The musical garnered 12 nominations, including Outstanding New Musical and nominations for Simard and featured performer Christopher Sieber. Coming in at #2 was the musical Maybe Happy Ending starring Darren Criss with nine nominations.

In the non-musical play categories, Stranger Things: The First Shadow snared the most nominations, with a total of seven, followed by The Hills of California with six.

Purpose: Prior to opening, our users were only predicting a single nomination for this new American family drama for its Tony-winning featured actress Kara Young. Since the glowing critical response to playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' latest effort, it has surged with three additional expected bids for Best Play, featured actress Latanya Richardson Jackson, and director Phylicia Rashad. It certainly hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either, as its lead actor Jon Michael Hill and featured actor Harry Lennix are both within striking distance in sixth place in their respective categories.

Michael Urie earned consistent laughter in the recent revival of Once Upon a Mattress thanks to the mannered way in which his infantilized Prince Dauntless called for his mother. “But Maw-maw,” he’d cry out to Queen Aggravain (Ana Gasteyer) in a double-accented deadpan, leaving the audience in stitches. “I don't remember why it just came out that way,” admits Urie, “It just came out that way and people laughed and I said, 'Well, I'm going to do that every time!' The 36th GLAAD Media Awards now have a host.

Shrinking star Michael Urie has been tapped to host the Los Angeles awards event on March 27. And he said he’s “honored” to get the gig. “Our queer siblings across the country who are being unfairly persecuted and villainized deserve a night that reminds them that they’re not alone,” said the multi-hyphenate talent. “Media is one of the strongest tools we have to fight against stereotypes and hate. I am inspired by the power that art and media can have on society and proud to honor and celebrate our nominees.”

Urie will be joined at the event by a list of confirmed attendees including Maren Morris, Jay Shetty, Doechii, Cooper Koch, Nava Mau, Abby Wambach, Glennon Doyle, Rodrigo Reyes, Racquel Chevremont, Brandon Scott Jones, Jonathan Bennett, viral “holding space” journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist, the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Khalen Saunders and more.

Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn’s bestselling autobiography-turned-smash-hit movie, is heading to Broadway, with two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster to play the role of the late, legendary country music icon.

Currently in development, the stage musical adaptation will be directed by Sam Gold, with music production by Jeanine Tesori. The two last worked together on the Tony-winning hit 2015 musical Fun Home.

The stage adaptation will include songs from Lynn’s career and stories from her life, some beyond the 1980 film’s ending.

Patsy Lynn, Loretta Lynn’s manager, producer, and daughter, will serve as a consulting producer on the project, along with Loretta’s longtime adviser Nancy Russell.

According to Lynn’s family, Loretta Lynn had given her stamp of approval to both the project and Sutton’s casting prior to her death at 90 in 2022.

A musical about country music star Loretta Lynn’s life is under development with Sutton Foster attached as the star.

Jeanine Tesori, a Tony Award-winning composer who worked on Fun Home, Kimberly Akimbo, Caroline, or Change, Thoroughly Modern Millie and more, is working on the show’s music production. Sam Gold, a Tony Award-winning director who worked on Fun Home with Tesori, as well as recent productions of Romeo+Juliet and An Enemy of the People, is attached as the director.

The musical, entitled Coal Miner’s Daughter, is inspired by the 1980 film and the autobiography about Lynn’s journey from rural Kentucky to becoming a country music star. The stage show will include songs from Lynn’s career, which include “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and extend her story beyond the film.

In 2012, Lynn had announced that Zoey Deschanel would portray her in a Broadway musical about her life.

Jenny Gersten, New York City Center VP & Producer has been upped to the new position of VP & Artistic Director, Musical Theater, according to New York City Center President & CEO Michael S. Rosenberg.

In this newly created position, Gersten will serve as artistic director of the popular and Tony-honored Encores! series and Annual Gala Productions. Responsible for programming and producing all musical theater titles at the historic institution, Gersten will continue to build on the innovation and diverse artistic voices that have brought ongoing success to City Center’s Encores! productions including Jelly’s Last Jam, Once Upon a Mattress, Ragtime, and Titanic.

Over the last season, the center’s musical theater attendance has reached an all-time high with nearly 30% of those tickets purchased for $40 or less.

Seaview, the Tony Award winning production company behind such Broadway shows as Stereophonic, Romeo + Juliet, Once Upon a Mattress and All In and recent Off Broadway stagings of Hold Onto Me Darling and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, has acquired Manhattan’s historic Tony Kiser Theater, formerly owned by the Second Stage Theater company.

The sale, which was effective January 1, 2025, will see a “refreshing” of the 296-seat Off Broadway venue located in the city’s midtown Theater District and a rebranding from Tony Kiser Theater to Studio Seaview. While the Off Broadway designation will remain – Broadway venues must have at least 500 seats – the acquisition transforms the space from a non-profit venue into a commercial theater.

The 296-seat theater in midtown had previously housed productions from the nonprofit theater company Second Stage Theater, which had staged a number of productions there, including the pre-Broadway run of Dear Evan Hansen, but gave up its lease at the end of 2024. Under the leadership of Seaview, the theater will be rebranded into a commercial Off-Broadway theater under the name Studio Seaview.

Seaview has produced a number of Off-Broadway hits including Hold Onto Me Darling, starring Adam Driver, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, starring Aubrey Plaza, and the immersive Sweeney Todd. The project is for Broadway Votes, the theater industry’s largest organized get out the vote effort, and features a remix video of Newsies’ “Carrying the Banner” and “Seize the Day” numbers. The project reunites the film’s director Kenny Ortega with composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman. It’s the first time they’ve re-teamed since the film.
