John Krasinski and Emily Blunt have to live their lives in silence to stay undetected from an unknown thing in the first teaser trailer for “A Quiet Place.” Paramount Pictures’ film was directed by Krasinski as well, and also stars Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds. In the trailer, a family lives in a house in the woods, but they must not make a noise, otherwise something — it’s not quite known what — will come for them. They eat dinner in silence, speak in sign language, play games quietly, and walk only on planks that don’t creak. Everything goes well until one.

Emerging from his politically radical period of low-budget, didactic political commentaries with revolutionary overtones, produced primarily on 16mm or tape for television broadcast, prolific French avant-garde iconoclast Jean-Luc Godard unexpectedly returned to commercial filmmaking with Every Man for Himself, finding reinvention in the age of video — a new formal frontier for the now-middle-aged provocateur. Godard’s star-studded return to more conventional cinemas, featuring Isabelle Huppert, Nathalie Baye, and Jacques Dutronc as Paul Godard (of course), a loathsome filmmaker humiliated by having been reduced to working for a TV studio, though shy of being considered a phenomenon in France or elsewhere, was well-publicized worldwide. Uncharacteristically, the aging filmmaker promoted the film extensively, pensively referring to it as his “second first film,” a somewhat deadpan admission that, to begin again, he had to shed the baggage of his underground period. Through this mainstream amelioration began a self-reflective period of filmmaking, reverse-engineering his formal fascinations — disruptive non-linear editing,...

That’s Baby (Ansel Elgort), an innocent-looking getaway driver who gets hardened criminals from point A to point B, with daredevil flair and a personal soundtrack running through his head. That’s because he’s got his escape route plotted to the beat of specific tunes that go from his well-curated iPod straight to his ears, and which translate into expertly timed hairpin turns, gear shifts and evasive maneuvers that leave his passengers on the ride of their lives.
Which makes Baby Driver, with its mixture of mph and music, the newest explosion of genre-crossing excitement from writer-director Edgar Wright, an action thriller unlike any other.

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at this week’s upcoming wide release movies. This week features a trio of new releases, with one of them poised to knock Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 off the top spot. Alien: Covenant should debut at number one since it continues the popular and long-lasting Alien franchise, while Diary of the Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul looks to please the family crowd, and Everything, Everything goes after the teen romance crowd.
Alien: Covenant
What we are excited about: It’s another Alien movie. It’s directed by Ridley Scott. Michael Fassbender (arguably the best part of Prometheus [2012]) returns. As a fan of the Alien films, what more do you want? The trailers seem to show that the film is going back to its original horror roots, which is very exciting given the middling response some of the more recent...

So far in this column, the default setting for TV horror has been the supernatural; usually ghosts (vengeful division), and a cult or two (whether it be Satan or crops). However, I would be remiss if I didn’t tend to any unusual domestic activities on a more human scale. This brings us to The Babysitter (1980), Peter Medak’s chilling tale of live-in help with some serious boundary issues. She doesn’t do windows, but she will do away with you and your family.
Originally airing on Friday, November 28th, 1980 as part of the ABC Friday Night Movie, The Babysitter as well as NBC’s Friday Night at the Movies would get trounced by CBS’ top rated shows The Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas, but those were number two and one in the land, so nobody was breaking through that block, not even the nanny from Hell.

The River Styx in Greek mythology is the last barrier that has to be crossed by the souls of the dead to reach the Underworld.
However, there was always a price to be paid for safe passage so it's incredibly apt that Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 2 was named for this particular body of water.
And speaking of water, that is definitely one of the pervasive themes in this episode.
Beginning with an energetic yet somehow foreboding seniors' Aquacize class where we meet Nora, one of the patients Nurse Annie passed to Mary earlier, and leading to the long stretch of beach Nora has chosen as the setting for her final breath.
Nora: Edward was a scientist. He always used to tell me 'Energy is not created or destroyed. It just is.' I believe every bit of him is still around. Just in a different form.
Mary: That's beautiful.

Long before Vanessa Hudgens, Kylie Jenner, Alessandra Ambrosio and more became today’s Coachella regulars, Drew Barrymore was the queen of the music festival (which she loved attending with Cameron Diaz). Today, the actress and Flower Beauty founder published a post on her site looking back on her most memorable Coachella experiences.
“One thing that gives me that rearview mirror joy, whether it was day or night, year after year, songs drenched in palm tree swayed air, was the fact that I felt like I could do whatever I wanted at festivals fashion and makeup-wise. I could swipe silver pigment across my forehead.

Bones signs off on Tuesday, after 12 seasons of crime solving, evidence examining, blood, guts and, most importantly, bones. But at the core of the long-running Fox procedural -- the “heart of the matter,” if you will -- was a partnership between forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).
From their first episode together, Brennan and Booth’s dynamic was electric, and while the will-they-or-won’t-they of it all took nearly seven seasons to sort out (more if you count that they don’t actually tie the knot until season nine), their relationship kept fans hooked for all 245 episodes. We watched Brennan wrestle with her feelings as Booth looked for love, saw them lay it all on the line only to yank it back again, and finally, at long last, got to witness their happy ending. Two kids and countless hurdles later, they’re still going strong.

What a surprising city Rotterdam is and the Festival and Cinemart are full of surprises too.
Being in The Netherlands is like a homecoming for me. My first major job in the film industry was with 20th Century Fox International and City Fox Films in Amsterdam in 1975 which is when I first attended the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, three years after its founding by Huub Bals. It was much smaller then. Iffr’s logo is a tiger, loosely based on the M.G.M. lion as an alternative. From the beginning, the festival has profiled itself as a promoter of alternative, innovative and non-commercial films, with an emphasis on the Far East and developing countries. It has become one of the most important events in the film world, an integral part of the winter circuit of Sundance, Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals.

After the one-two punch of last year’s “The Green Inferno” and “Knock Knock,” the Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Eli Roth is set to adapt the “Aleister Arcane” comic book with Jim Carrey in the title role. Though the actor isn’t known for his work in the horror genre, he did star in “The Number 23” and will soon be seen in “The Bad Batch,” Ana Lily Amirpour’s follow-up to “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.”

Southpaw has several flaws, but is ultimately a captivating experience. The powerhouse performance of star Jake Gyllenhaal lifts the film to a raw, emotional high. The actor vanishes like a chameleon in this role. It's stunning to see the lanky sociopath from last year's brilliant Nightcrawler, transformed into the chiseled and wounded bruiser of Southpaw. He is arguably the finest lead actor in Hollywood today. Director Antoine Fuqua takes a somewhat predictable story to a different level by putting the focus solidly on Gyllenhaal. The result is a film that doesn't show us anything new, but punches you in the gut with feeling.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as champion boxer Billy Hope. A simple man, but a ferocious fighter in the ring. His entire world revolves around his beloved wife (Rachel McAdams) and daughter (Oona Laurence). The Hopes are a picture of happiness. Enjoying the success that pulled them out of...

As someone who grew up watching creature features (usually courtesy of Elvira’s Movie Macabre), I absolutely had a blast with Benni Diaz’s recent killer wasp romp, Stung. Part old-school critter camp, part new-school mentality, the horror comedy features some incredible special effects, tons of great gore and wickedly fun kills, as well as a strong script from Adam Aresty that does an excellent job balancing out the humor and horror of the situation. Stung never strays too far from its B-movie roots and perfectly celebrates everything fans enjoy about these types of films with an infectious enthusiasm.
Stung starts off rather innocently, as we follow Julia (Jessica Cook) and her co-worker Paul (Matt O’Leary) who are on their way to cater a swanky backyard party where they’re hoping to impress their upscale clientele. Everything goes as planned until a swarm of mutant killer wasps show up...

France/India/USA, 1951
As the camera looks down upon an ornamental design created from rice powder and water, the narrator (voiced by June Hillman), who speaks throughout the film, welcomes us to the world of The River. This is Bengal, “where the story really happened,” and this is Harriet speaking, reflecting back on her life at a very confusing and significant time. For all intents and purposes, The River is primarily her story. And in this, the film is an intimately personal cinematic memoir. But The River is also something else. In its depiction of the “river people” who inhabit this region of India, the film also takes on an ethnographic appeal, capturing the “flavor” of the setting and its inhabitants.

In the second of our James Bond retrospectives, we look at From Russia With Love, starring Sean Connery...
Two films in and the James Bond franchise reaches its artistic highpoint. Downhill from here? Certainly for some; others won’t see what the hype is. Yet critically, From Russia with Love remains the darling: a gritty, almost-plausible tale of gypsies, Spectre and sex tapes. It boasts a whole array of brilliant characters and a fight scene to make Daniel Craig crap his paints. Anyone who claims the film is slightly dull has my opposition and my sneaking respect.
The Villain (s): Spectre. A real team effort here. Until the release of Bond 24 (which it seems fair to bet will feature the organisation pretty heavily) From Russia With Love remains the definitive exploration of the creatively acronymed gang. Katy Perry makes a stunning appearance on the March cover of Elle Magazine, and inside the publication she spills new details on the Super Bowl, the trials and tribulations of being a modern pop star, and, of course, Beyoncé. Katy has been making headlines all week due to her much-discussed halftime show, which included some fierce outfits, sparked a few pretty spot-on comparisons, and made us wonder about the dancer in that shark costume. Keep reading to get even more insight, and check out Katy's full feature in the March issue of Elle, which hits newsstands on Feb. 17. On being a pop star in today's society: "It is a hundred times harder a dream than the dream that I dreamt when I was 9 . . . Don't try to reach her, she's offline! Hot off her Super Bowl Xlix performance, Katy Perry's March 2015 cover for Elle was released on Tuesday, Feb. 3. In the issue, the pop star talks about how terrified she was as she prepped for the biggest moment in her career, and discussed her fellow music superstars Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Beyonce. "In my show, I am boss daddy. I am boss mommy," Perry, 30, told the mag. "They call me Boss. Everything goes through my eyes; I [...]...

In a marvelously cheeky 1979 essay, the late, great Ellen Willis defined the difference between classical sex ("romantic, profound, serious...and typically feminine") and baroque sex ("pop, playful, funny...and stereotypically masculine"). So where shall we put German director Dominik Graf's Beloved Sisters, which tells the possibly semi-true story of the pact made by aristocratic sisters Caroline and Charlotte von Lengefeld (played by Hannah Herzsprung and Henriette Confurius) to peaceably share the same man, poet, playwright, and historian Friedrich Schiller (Florian Stetter)? Everything goes swimmingly for a time in this 18th-century idyll, and, particularly in the first section of the film, Graf brings a lush but discreet eroticism to the story. In the most ...

Christopher Nolan has a secret.
“You know, this is basically a film about the end of the world,” Nolan told TheWrap of his blockbuster Interstellar. “We don’t advertise it as that so much, because that makes it sound like it’s not necessarily the kind of popcorn movie people want to see during the Christmas season. But it is a film about the end of the world.”
Of course, Interstellar is about more than that. It’s about a space expedition to find a new planet for the human race as Earth is in its death throes. It’s...

If our family games of Pictionary go this well during the upcoming holiday season, we'll be pretty pleased.
Jimmy Fallon had Martin Short, Jerry Seinfeld, and YouTube comedian Miranda Sings as guests on The Tonight Show Monday, and he wrangled them all into one massive game of comic Pictionary. (Important note: Miranda is behaving this way on purpose.)
Everything goes about as well as you'd expect: Seinfeld lapses into his classic exasperated voice during Miranda's turn (which Fallon enjoys imitating at every opportunity), Short gesticulates frantically, and thankfully, no one comes to blows.
The whole thing is pretty awkward, as...

It seems pretty safe to say that Kathy Bates probably never expected to play a bearded lady, let alone one with a broad Canadian accent. Or that Sarah Paulson aspired to play a woman with two heads - the one on the right puritanically grim and skeptical, the one on the left a bit dippy and worshipful of movie stars. But anything goes on American Horror Story, starting its fourth season, Freak Show. Everything goes. It’s fair to say that online multiplayer gaming gets some pretty negative press. Thanks largely to a cavalcade of immature, vocal morons, the world of online gaming is often a hostile one that’s characterised by abhorrent behaviour and dominated by prepubescent teens looking to start a virtual argument with as many members of the community as is humanly possibly.
For the uninitiated, the caricature of an online gamer is one of an entitled little brat, sitting in his room button mashing, swearing and throwing a proper strop when things cease to go his way. Of course very few gamers actually fit this mould; for most of us the online sphere is simply an extension of the single-player experience.
Contrary to popular belief some of gaming’s very best moments occur in multiplayer arenas, because that’s where the gaming community gets to kill, maim and blow stuff up together.

If last week’s episode of Teen Wolf proved that a ticking clock can be a big aid in adding tension to a story, then this week’s episode proves that a (literal) ticking clock isn’t always an automatic fix. The countdown this time around is the result of Scott’s plan to lure in the Benefactor by pretending to be dead. This is achieved by using Kira’s powers to slow his heart down to a crawl, which is a thing that kitsunes can do, apparently (as with many of Lydia’s banshee powers, this seems to be one of those plot convenient abilities).
Everything goes according to plan, and Scott ends up officially pronounced dead and hiding in a meat locker in the hospital morgue. You would ...

At the end of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," Panem was in a panic with more and more people looking to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) for inspiration. But you'd never know if from President Snow's latest bit of propaganda. As a followup to his earlier speech, Snow (Donald Sutherland) claims that Panem has never have been more unified as a nation, reminding the disparate districts to stay together as one. To prove his point, he's flanked by two of Katniss' allies. Everything goes as planned, until that rebellious Beetee guy (Jeffrey Wright) breaks in with a pirated message from District 13. Watch it here: As Beetee reminds us, "The Mockingjay lives," but we may not actually see Lawrence in one of these promos for a few more weeks. For now, we'll just have to wonder what's going on with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Johanna (Jena Malone). And here's the latest portrait of President Snow.

Starring Angelina Jolie, Maleficent claims to tell the untold tale of Sleeping Beauty. Caroline finds out if it keeps Disney's old magic...
Everything goes around in cycles and, for Disney, this has manifested itself in the form of ‘untold stories’ based on supporting characters or previously misunderstood villains. After the unprecedented success of Frozen, the idea of a summer blockbuster focusing on Sleeping Beauty’s enigmatic bad gal Maleficent didn’t seem like such a crazy idea and, with news that it would be Angelina Jolie donning the horns and black cape, Maleficent suddenly became one of the more anticipated films of the summer season.
The relatively recent trend for darker interpretations of family-friendly properties has been tricky to get right, what with the difficulty of balancing more complex material with nothing more commercially troubling than a 12A classification, and stories focusing on villainous characters make that process even harder.

Director: Daniel Stamm. Writers: David Birke and Daniel Stamm. Cast: Mark Webber, Devon Graye, Tom Bower, Rutina Wesley and Ron Perlman. 13 Sins is an indie horror feature from The Last Exorcism (2010) director Daniel Stamm and a trio of production companies. The film takes it source material from a horror film from Thailand, titled: 13: Games of Death (2006). This viewer has not seen the earlier film, so comparisons cannot be made. On its own, 13 Sins is a solid thriller, with actor Mark Webber playing a troubled protagonist. Everything goes wrong for his character, Elliot. Fortunately, Stamm's directing style keeps events interesting as the protagonist fights against unseen forces. 13 Sins is a solid indie thriller, which offers lots of dark comedic bits. The story is told through the eyes of Elliot. He is a man down on his luck. Recently, Elliot has lost his job and a new baby is on its way.

Finally. After 15 episodes and a long mid-season break, fans of The Walking Dead have finally reached the finish of season 4. Many fans have been split over the direction of this season from the character expansion of the Governor to the individual storylines leading to Terminus. But at last, we’ve finally reached the sanctuary and are about to find out what’s really at the end of the line.
As the episode kicks off, fans are greeted with another flashback, which have been used as strong story telling tools this season as this time we’re taken back to the prison and we see Hershel. It’s a return to a better time from earlier in the season but the episode then quickly jumps ahead to a bloodied Rick who appears to be visibly shaken up. The action then transitions to Rick, Carl and Michonne as they break camp...

Spoilers: just where does Captain America: The Winter Soldier leave the Marvel cinematic universe?
This article contains lots of spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The phrase ‘game-changer’ is bandied about a lot in the ever-growing world of superhero movies, with The Dark Knight, The Avengers and now Captain America: The Winter Soldier being three of the biggest examples in recent years.
While Nolan’s terrorism allegory and Whedon’s super team-up both changed the game for the makers of comic book movies, inspiring a string brooding blockbusters and shared universes respectively, The Winter Soldier actually changes things in a different way - by hugely shaking up the fictional world of the movie, the events of Cap’s latest adventure have steered the Marvel Cinematic Universe away from the direction many presumed it was going in.
There is a lot of spoilery discussion...

"Arrow" Season 2 moves away from Oliver just a little bit in order to focus on the ladies in "Birds of Prey." Some of the ladies anyway -- all of those most important to "Birds of Prey" can fall into the category of Oliver Queen's ex-girlfriends.
The results are as awkward (and occasionally amusing) as they are violent.
And you think your ex is nuts?
Problems begin when a police sting on a guy named Hugo Mannheim yields more than everyone bargained for: Frank Bertinelli. The on-the-lam mob boss is back in Starling City, but he has way bigger problems than getting caught by the police.
That's because Helena Bertinelli, aka the Huntress, aka Oliver's most emotionally disturbed ex-girlfriend, has been leaving a trail of bodies around the world in her efforts to track down dear old dad. With Frank back in custody, everyone knows it's just a matter of time...

Winter's Tale tries so hard to be epic it ultimately fails at telling what could have been a decent (albeit silly) tale of love, morals and a religious battle between angels and demons. Instead it wants to be mythic. It wants so badly to create a connection to the modern world that it forgets all it needs to do is make a human connection, something it actually accomplishes early on until it tries to be something it never was. Attempting to tell a story that began in the early 1900s and ends in present day, had writer/director Akiva Goldsman only stuck to the period portion of his story, adapted from the Mark Helprin novel, he would have been far better off, especially considering that's where he spends the bulk of his story, focusing on Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a master thief in 1916 that's attempting to go straight. Peter was...
