For the purposes of this review Farcry 1 was re-installed just to check 3D capability. Absolutely perfect 3D. That doesn't mean the game looks great because as one can imagine the game is now quite long in the tooth so the graphics are rather dated. All that aside this game is really a blast, many hours of gameplay with quite a nice degree of variation between locations. There are a couple of problems in that you cannot save a game anywhere. Its the old 'Get past a certain point and wait for an automatic save' type system which can certainly put a person off especially at the end where you are on a ship that is sinking. getting past that point was very hard but definitely doable. This game is definitely worth playing even though it is quite old now. The dated graphics do not take away from the experience enough to warrant playing something else. "Far Cry", released in 2004, was a real breakthrough in the world of first-person shooters. This game has set new standards for the genre, striking with its innovations and quality of execution. The project from Crytek studio offered such an exciting world that the influence of the game is felt to this day.
One of the main advantages of "Far Cry" was its stunning plot. The game tells the story of Jack Carver, a former military man who finds himself at the center of events on a mysterious tropical island. Suddenly caught in the epicenter of a large-scale conspiracy, the hero faces many dangers and trials. The storyline holds the attention from beginning to end, offering many unexpected twists that make each mission exciting and full of intrigue. And what at first seemed like an adventure adventure in the jungle will eventually lead to the disclosure of an interesting conspiracy with an obvious fantastic background.
Missions deserve special attention. The game offers a variety of tasks, from storming enemy bases to covert operations that require caution and planning. Each level feels unique and memorable, and the non-linear approach to completing tasks allows the player to complete missions in different ways with each re-play.
One of the most revolutionary aspects of "Far Cry" was the open world and the non-linearity of the passage. I remember that for me this feature in the first-person shooter has become iconic. The player is given the freedom to choose how and in what way to achieve their goals. The opportunity to explore a huge tropical archipelago, plan your actions and use the environment to achieve success made "Far Cry" one of the first games where the freedom of the player became a fundamental element of gameplay. Such an innovation for its time radically distinguished the Crytek game from other shooters, setting the trend for subsequent games in the genre.
The shooter offered players a variety of tactical approaches. The ability to use vehicles such as jeeps and boats added dynamics and allowed you to quickly move around the vast territories of the island. This not only made traveling more exciting, but also expanded the tactical possibilities, allowing the player to choose the best ways to achieve the goal.
The graphics of "Far Cry" struck with their realism and detail (at the time of the game's release). The game offered an incredibly beautiful visual component, which not only pleased the eye, but also created a feeling of complete immersion in a tropical paradise that became a death trap. Detailed landscapes, dense jungles, bright ponds and thoughtful lighting made Far Cry one of the most graphically impressive projects of its time.
The game was pleased with the high level of study of the environment and attention to detail. Every corner of the tropical archipelago looked alive and filled with little things that made the world more convincing. From animals crawling on the ground to realistic weather conditions, all this created a sense of immersion that was difficult for other games of that time to achieve.
The artificial intelligence of the opponents deserves special mention, which was at its best for 2004. The enemies reacted to the player's actions, coordinated their attacks, and used the environment to hinder progress. This made each battle unique and required a tactical approach from the player.
I would especially like to mention the main musical theme, which was so willingly played in the screensaver. The composition is stunning and atmospheric. It can still be cool to listen to it today. The music evokes nostalgia, and tropical islands, shootouts with monsters and mercenaries immediately pop up in front of my eyes.
"Far Cry" has become a landmark project that has taken the shooter genre to a new level. The gorgeous plot, the open world with its relative non-linearity, great graphics and innovative mechanics made this game a real masterpiece that is still admired. The toy is deservedly one of my favorite games, leaving a significant mark on the history of video games.

10 out of 10.
Farcry has got it all, monsters, mayhem, and personality. Unlike the usual mute superhero Jack Carver talks, and has plenty of sarcasm to dish out. But what makes this game stand out from the others is the setting. Most FPS games are either based on real life warfare or grim and gloomy sci fi. A case in point is Doom III, where you get to spend 12 hours wandering around dark corridors. Farcry is set on a series of tropical islands, and it's amazing simply how beautiful it all is, brightly colored and radiant, except that people are shooting at you. Later on you get the dark and scary stuff, but it doesn't take up the entire game.
Farcry also mixes very well military combat with monsters. The mercenaries are only slightly predictable, usually when a scene stretches on too and long and they start looping voice commands or actions, and the trigens are downright scary to face off against. This was also I think the first game to introduce a realistic looking water, which now is a requirement for every new game.
Playing the game will take up the better part of a week, and that's before you start tinkering. There's a few different rendering modes to use, and Nvidia 68X0 series cards can enable a primitive form of HDR lighting, which makes things substantially different. It may not be obvious at first, but most levels have a few different ways they can be played, whether you prefer stealth, sniping, or up-front and personal combat.
The only flaw Farcry has to me is it's already starting to age. Half-Life 2 brought us synchronized lips and facial expressions, and some things like twisted metal pipes look very blocky, being made out of low-poly count shapes. Still, I can't wait for a sequel.

'Far Cry (2004)' is a first-person shooter set across a variety of tropical island locations. Unlike its follow-ups, the game is structured in an entirely linear, level-based fashion. The stages themselves are rather large, though, and can be tackled in a variety of ways. The game is a solid entry in its genre; it mostly holds up today. It can be very hard, though, especially on the higher difficulties. It can feel a little clunky at times, too, and it's generally rather standard. Still, it's typically an entertaining affair. It's a different kind of experience to the rest of the games in its series. 7/10

- TriviaIt is possible to save anywhere the player wants using the console command "\save_game saved".
- GoofsA Screaming Piha can be heard in the background noise. This is a bird found in the America.
- Alternate versionsDue to Germany's strict policies regarding realistic violence, the game's German version was slightly modified to have the ragdoll effects completely disabled and also blooding in the water no longer happens neither. This is to retain its USK-18 rating as the first batch of editions in Germany were uncut and later got indexed/banned by the BPjM.
