The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival kicked off with a galaxy of Chinese stars present and a heartfelt message of peace from jury president Giuseppe Tornatore.
The gala event at the city’s spectacular Grand Theatre opened with an orchestral performance accompanied by a children’s choir. Stars present included the cast of the opening night film, Peter Chan Ho-sun’s “She’s Got No Name,” led by Zhang Ziyi, Mei Ting, Lei Jiayin, Li Xian and Yang Mi; Ni Ni, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Kara Wai Ying-hung, Zhu Yilong and Wu Lei among many others.
The festival was officially declared open by Gong Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai.
Given the ongoing conflicts around the world, the jury members focused on the connective aspects of cinema. Indian filmmaker Kiran Rao said, “Cinema is like the Tree of Life, eternally nurturing stories and sparking conversations. Its branches stretch across generations, connecting us through images and shared memories.

It’s eight years since one of late Irrfan Khan’s most successful films Hindi Medium was released. Irrfan + Social Issue, bound to work. He was known to be a thinking actor with very definite views of politics and culture.
The trauma that parents face is alchemized in Hindi Medium into something smile-inducing and heartwarming, something quite magical in its ability to hit us where it hurts the most without damaging our sense of self-worth. Not that director Saket Choudhary trivializes the pain of parenting, as it crosses the hurdles of schooling protocol.
To his credit in Hindi Medium, director Saket Chowdhary does not allow proceedings to get preachy, screechy, or downright hysterical. Most issue-based films can’t help lecturing down on the audience. Saket eases you into the life of a terribly endearing couple—lovable with all their whims, excesses, and fancies, Armaan and Armanis – played by Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar.

ABC has picked up the drama pilot “Rj Decker,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel “Double Whammy.”
The one-hour pilot hails from writer and executive producer Rob Doherty, with Paul McGuigan attached to direct and executive produce. Hiaasen is also executive producing along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. 20th Television is the studio.
The official logline for the series states:
“Rj Decker, disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con, starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.”
This marks the latest attempt to adapt a Hiaasen novel for television in recent years. Apple TV+ currently has the series...

Tobin Wolf's 1985 animated TV series "ThunderCats" was a very, very odd beast. The titular characters were superpowered humanoid/feline aliens from the planet Thundara, living at an unspecified time in history. The plot follows the ThunderCats after the destruction of Thundara, and their subsequent relocation to a distant world called Third Earth. Third Earth is sparsely populated by benevolent robot teddy bears called Berbils, but is also home to the occasional beasts and monsters. In a faraway cave rests Mumm-Ra (Earl Hammond), an impossibly ancient mummy that aims to take over the world with magic spells. He is able to transform into a muscled wrestler for short spans.
The six ThunderCats have built a massive mechanical castle on Third Earth, and are led by the royal prince Lion-o (Larry Kenney), who is armed with the mystical Sword of Omens and a magical claw glove. His subjects include the fast-running Cheetara...

The photography and cinema camera industries are reeling from a fresh wave of geopolitical and economic turbulence. Rumors suggest that Fujifilm will suspend orders for three of its most sought-after cameras—the GFX100RF, X100VI, and X-M5 (black version)—citing an overwhelming backlog and worsening supply chain issues. At the same time, prices of Fujifilm products are expected to rise significantly in the United States, as a direct consequence of new tariffs reinstated by President Donald Trump. This one-two punch—backorder freezes and impending price hikes—is emblematic of a broader trend shaking the camera industry. As detailed in Y.M.Cinema’s breakdown of Trump’s tariffs, the revived economic barriers are already causing logistical strain, forcing companies to rethink production and pricing models. And Fujifilm is just the latest to fall into the crossfire.

With its macabre one-liners, revolving door of guest stars, and endless imagined homicides, "CSI" is one of the most recognizable network TV franchises of all time. Yet, despite well over a decade of success and extensive rerun appeal, the Anthony Zuiker-created property actually went off the air for a five year period. In 2016, the last "CSI" show that was still going, "CSI: Cyber," bowed out after just two seasons, and the TV world of the crime saga that began at the turn of the millennium went temporarily dark.
Like so many procedurals before it, "CSI" did eventually come back, offering up the Paula Newsome and Matt Lauria-led "CSI: Vegas" in 2021. That series returned to the show's trend of focusing on a different city (past hits have included "CSI: New York" and the infamously punny "CSI: Miami"), but it wasn't enough to save it. "Vegas" was canceled in 2024 after three seasons,...

Theresa Caputo’s Lifetime show Raising Spirits Season 1 first launched in January 2024, and it immediately hooked Long Island Medium fans eager to see the famous medium in a new light. However, now, after a hiatus of sorts, that left many fans waiting for more episodes to materialize with no update on the same, Matthew Ostrom has ended all speculations and has insinuated that the project is moving full steam ahead. The film producer recently talked about all his shows and non-fiction shows at length.
In a March 30, 2025, interview with TVInsider, Ostrom revealed that his collaboration with Caputo remains strong, thanks in large part to her remarkable and “really dynamic personality.” The Swamp People producer credited her authentic approach to mediumship for setting her apart from others in the same space. In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Offspring", the android Data (Brent Spiner) has decided that he would like to be a father. Using his own android body as a template, he builds an android child in a positronic lab, naming the new being Lal. At first, Lal (Leonard Crofoot) is a somewhat shapeless being with sharp, metallic features. Data feels that Lal should be able to choose their own gender and appearance. Lal decides to be a young woman (Hallie Todd). The bulk of the episode involves Data, with his own limited understand of human interaction, teaching Lal everything he knows. When Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) questions the ethics of an artificial life form like Data creating another without permission, Data easily defends himself. No one else on the Enterprise requires permission to reproduce, so why should he?

Ahead of Severance's second season finale on Friday, Gold Derby has broken down the show's Emmy potential in the top races for series and acting.
For its first season in 2022, Severance was nominated for 14 Emmys and won two craft awards, for main title design and music composition. The series ended up playing third fiddle to Succession Season 3 and Squid Game Season 1. While Succession is long gone, Squid Game is back this cycle for its second season, though the critical response was somewhat muted.
The four nominated Severance performers the last time around were Adam Scott as Mark Scout in lead actor, Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel in supporting actress, and John Turturro as Irving Bailiff and Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman in supporting actor. Patricia Arquette recently spoke about starring in the late David Lynch's polarizing and surreal 1997 film, Lost Highway, as both Renee Madison and Alice Wakefield. In the interview with IndieWire, she reflected on the dual roles, filming with Lynch (who very recently passed away), and appearing nude.
"That was the hardest movie for me to ever make because I’ve always been very shy," Arquette said. "Especially sexually. I think I probably had a lot of trauma. For many years, I would even take baths in the dark, alone with just a candle."
In the past, she said filming the nude scenes were "terrifying," especially as the crew said "crude" things. She continued:
"For me, making Lost Highway was one of the bravest things I could have done. I was so sick of carrying this burden of terror, this fear. That was a very powerful movie for me to make.

Earlier this year, rumors began to circulate that The Smiths might make like Oasis and reunite. Such speculation never came to pass, but it did reignite the long-simmering public feud between former bandmates Morrissey and Johnny Marr, with the former claiming Marr ignored the lucrative offer and the latter clarifying, “I didn’t ignore the offer — I said no.” Now, in a rare new interview posted on Medium, Morrissey explains why he was interested in the proposition in the first place.
“I agreed because it felt like the last time such a thing would be possible,” the former Smiths frontman said. “We’ve all begun to grow old. I thought the tour that was offered would be a good way of saying thank you for those who have listened for what suddenly feels like a lifetime. It wasn’t because I had any emotional attachment to Marr. I have absolutely none.

Fans of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will remember the iconic Season 1 episode "Dinner Party From Hell." The episode saw Camille Meyer (née Grammer) host a dinner party and invite the main cast of Rhobh alongside her psychic medium friend, Allison DuBois.
Allison was introduced to audiences in the ninth episode of the first season as she could "mind tap" and see the future for anyone in the room. Patricia Arquette's character in the TV show Medium was based on Allison, so the Housewives were expecting big things from their dinner party together.
Things started badly when Kyle Richards brought her friend Faye Resnick to the dinner, whom Camille called “Morally corrupt." Jim Abrahams, part of the writing-directing-producing team behind such comedy touchstones as Airplane!, the Naked Gun films, and Police Squad!, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 80.
His son, Joseph Abrahams, confirmed the news to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter.
Along with brothers David and Jerry Zucker, Abrahams also was behind laugh-inducing — and often intentionally groan-inducing — comedy films including Top Secret! and the Top Gun spoofs Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux. Students of the Mel Brooks School of Anything for a Laugh, the trio paired absurd situations with deadpan lines and fueled Leslie Nielsen’s unlikely rise to leading man after 30 years in the business.
The trio got their big-screen start writing The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), a series of decidedly un-pc vignettes directed by John Landis that ranged from silly to uproarious to “what the hell?!” and back. Sample: A TV news anchor deadpans from...

Maharaja Box Office (China): With Impressive Pre-Sales, Vijay Sethupathi Starrer Hints At Defeating Prabhas’ Biggie? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The countdown is set for Maharaja’s grand release in China. The film is just five days away from hitting theatres, and box office enthusiasts are excited to see how it performs in the country. In the past, Indian films have performed exceptionally well there, earning more than their entire global lifetime collection. However, as far as the Tamil industry is concerned, there aren’t any big money spinners, and that is expected to change with the Vijay Sethupathi starrer.
In China, Indian films with grounded stories and a drama quotient tend to perform brilliantly. Interestingly, almost every larger-than-life biggie that was a blockbuster in India has failed to make it big in China. Smaller films like Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium, Andhadhun, and Mom have fetched massive numbers in the country.

If you're a reality TV fan, you know that fall can test the capacity of even the most robust DVR.
This month saw a genuinely staggering number of premieres and returns, whereas last week, America's Got Talent crowned this season's winner and wrapped, and Dancing With The Stars featured a shock double elimination.
It is incredibly busy in reality television land right now, and on top of that, we have shows bouncing around in random time slots to accommodate brand-new shows and major news events (read on for more on that).
The Golden Bachelorette is just getting started, as is Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City to which the once demoted to "Friend" Mary Cosby just returned full-time.
Would you believe that's just the tip of the reality TV iceberg this week? There is so much going on.

Medium is a lost gem from the aughts. Though it didn't enjoy the same kind of fame that similar crime shows with supernatural themes like The X-Files achieved, the show is extremely well-written. Following Allison, a psychic medium who receives dreams from the dead to help law enforcement solve crimes, the show has many genuinely touching, thrilling and hilarious moments. Many Medium fans rewatch the show throughout the years, even long after it has wrapped.
Medium isn't just entertaining; the stories have been praised for their originality and ability to reach deep into viewers' hearts. Like most long-running shows, Medium went through some changes over the course of its seven seasons, leaving some uneven performances. However, the show maintains its high quality and never fails to surprise fans with mind-blowing plot twists in every season, which is quite impressive.

Days of Our Lives has seen frequent turnover with its cast and 2024 is no different, with several characters leaving the long-running soap opera. As one of the longest-running TV shows ever, Days of Our Lives has had hundreds of characters arrive and leave since 1965, when the show first premiered. From long-time performers like Bryan Dattilo to actors who only briefly appeared on Days of Our Lives, like Mila Kunis, and went on to have notable careers in movies and TV shows, the legendary soap opera takes all kinds of performers for decades or maybe just a short arc.
The series ostensibly follows the Brady and the Horton families; however, Days of Our Lives features many more characters from other families all with their own plots and schemes. Not every Days of Our Lives actor can become the longest-running soap opera actor in history, and there have been plenty of departures over the years.

The 2010 teen romantic comedy, directed by Will Gluck and written by Bert V. Royal, is partially inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's renowned 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter as it depicts a teenager, played by Emma Stone, who becomes known as the school's resident tramp. Similar to Hester in The Scarlet Letter, Easy A's protagonist dons a scarlet "A" on her clothing to embrace her perceived identity.

The move is the second time that Canal+ has increased its share stake and means that Canal+ has released the last instalment of its $300 million staggered investment. “This investment is a renewed testimony to Canal+’s commitment to develop Asia as one of the group’s growth engines and underlines Canal+’s confidence in Viu and its team,” the French company said in a statement. A further investment, at Canal+’s discretion, could lift its ownership stake in Viu to 51%.

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.
