The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival kicked off with a galaxy of Chinese stars present and a heartfelt message of peace from jury president Giuseppe Tornatore.

The gala event at the city’s spectacular Grand Theatre opened with an orchestral performance accompanied by a children’s choir. Stars present included the cast of the opening night film, Peter Chan Ho-sun’s “She’s Got No Name,” led by Zhang Ziyi, Mei Ting, Lei Jiayin, Li Xian and Yang Mi; Ni Ni, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Kara Wai Ying-hung, Zhu Yilong and Wu Lei among many others.

The festival was officially declared open by Gong Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai.

Given the ongoing conflicts around the world, the jury members focused on the connective aspects of cinema. Indian filmmaker Kiran Rao said, “Cinema is like the Tree of Life, eternally nurturing stories and sparking conversations. Its branches stretch across generations, connecting us through images and shared memories.

Jeff Margolis, the award-winning TV producer and director of the Oscars, Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards and the American Music Awards, has died. He was 78.

Margolis’ family shared that he died Friday morning in Nashville. No cause of death was given.

“Jeff Margolis created some of the most unforgettable moments in awards show history, and we are grateful that the Screen Actors Guild Awards was among them. For over 16 years, Jeff helped shape the telecast into a celebration worthy of the actors it honors. We are profoundly grateful for his contributions and will miss him dearly,” the SAG Awards Committee, made up of JoBeth Williams, Daryl Anderson, Jason George, Elizabeth McLaughlin and Woody Schultz, said in a statement on Friday.

Born in Los Angeles on Oct. 14, 1946, Margolis began his career from the ground up, as he started out holding cue cards for his uncle Monty Hall on Let’s Make a Deal.

It’s eight years since one of late Irrfan Khan’s most successful films Hindi Medium was released. Irrfan + Social Issue, bound to work. He was known to be a thinking actor with very definite views of politics and culture.

ABC has picked up the drama pilot “Rj Decker,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel “Double Whammy.”

The one-hour pilot hails from writer and executive producer Rob Doherty, with Paul McGuigan attached to direct and executive produce. Hiaasen is also executive producing along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. 20th Television is the studio.

The official logline for the series states:

“Rj Decker, disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con, starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.”

Ahead of Severance's second season finale on Friday, Gold Derby has broken down the show's Emmy potential in the top races for series and acting.

For its first season in 2022, Severance was nominated for 14 Emmys and won two craft awards, for main title design and music composition. The series ended up playing third fiddle to Succession Season 3 and Squid Game Season 1. While Succession is long gone, Squid Game is back this cycle for its second season, though the critical response was somewhat muted.

Patricia Arquette recently spoke about starring in the late David Lynch's polarizing and surreal 1997 film, Lost Highway, as both Renee Madison and Alice Wakefield. In the interview with IndieWire, she reflected on the dual roles, filming with Lynch (who very recently passed away), and appearing nude.

"That was the hardest movie for me to ever make because I’ve always been very shy," Arquette said. "Especially sexually. I think I probably had a lot of trauma. For many years, I would even take baths in the dark, alone with just a candle."

In the past, she said filming the nude scenes were "terrifying," especially as the crew said "crude" things. She continued:

The countdown is set for Maharaja’s grand release in China. The film is just five days away from hitting theatres, and box office enthusiasts are excited to see how it performs in the country. In the past, Indian films have performed exceptionally well there, earning more than their entire global lifetime collection. However, as far as the Tamil industry is concerned, there aren’t any big money spinners, and that is expected to change with the Vijay Sethupathi starrer.

In China, Indian films with grounded stories and a drama quotient tend to perform brilliantly. Interestingly, almost every larger-than-life biggie that was a blockbuster in India has failed to make it big in China. The section focuses on films in the post-production stage that have a connection to the Mediterranean region and Southeastern Europe. These projects are presented to key players in the industry, including sales agents, distributors, producers, streaming platforms and festival programmers. The aim is to help these films secure finishing funds, attract sales agents, schedule festival premieres, and establish crucial partnerships.

This year’s lineup includes four debut films and five works from seasoned directors.

Weigel Broadcasting and Paramount Global’s joint venture multicast network Start TV has launched on DirecTV’s pay television platform.

The rollout of Start TV on DirecTV via Satellite and DirecTV via Internet comes after Weigel signed a multi-year carriage agreement with the pay TV company. The channel became available on the services earlier this week.

Start TV joins two other Weigel-owned channels on DirecTV: Heroes & Icons and Me TV. All three enjoy national distribution on DirecTV’s satellite and streaming platforms.

“We are excited to extend Start TV’s reach, and we know that the network’s lineup of dramas featuring intelligent and powerful female leading characters will bring a unique and compelling entertainment destination to DirecTV subscribers who are always hungry for diverse content,” Neal Sabin, the Vice Chairman of Weigel, said in a statement.

Medium is a lost gem from the aughts. Though it didn't enjoy the same kind of fame that similar crime shows with supernatural themes like The X-Files achieved, the show is extremely well-written. Following Allison, a psychic medium who receives dreams from the dead to help law enforcement solve crimes, the show has many genuinely touching, thrilling and hilarious moments. Many Medium fans rewatch the show throughout the years, even long after it has wrapped.

Medium isn't just entertaining; the stories have been praised for their originality and ability to reach deep into viewers' hearts. Like most long-running shows, Medium went through some changes over the course of its seven seasons, leaving some uneven performances. However, the show maintains its high quality and never fails to surprise fans with mind-blowing plot twists in every season, which is quite impressive.

Netflix is expanding its live programming lineup with Live From The Other Side with Tyler Henry, a new weekly series featuring the 28-year-old clairvoyant medium, beginning September 17 on the streamer.

France’s Canal+ Group has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian video streamer Viu to 36.8%. It says that the move is in accordance with the terms of the strategic partnership with Viu owner Pccw Group announced a year ago and follows the satisfaction of key business milestones.

The move is the second time that Canal+ has increased its share stake and means that Canal+ has released the last instalment of its $300 million staggered investment. “This investment is a renewed testimony to Canal+’s commitment to develop Asia as one of the group’s growth engines and underlines Canal+’s confidence in Viu and its team,” the French company said in a statement. A further investment, at Canal+’s discretion, could lift its ownership stake in Viu to 51%.

Eddie Driscoll, the veteran character actor who appeared on shows including Sex and the City, Boston Public, Entourage, Mad Men, The Last Ship and This Is Us, has died. He was 60.

Driscoll died Dec. 15 in Los Angeles from a saddle pulmonary embolism after months of fighting stomach cancer, actor Jimmy Palumbo announced.

Driscoll had a recurring role as East Coast leader Randall Croft in 2016 on the TNT sci-fi series The Last Ship, and he portrayed the loan shark Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo in a West Coast touring company of Jersey Boys.

Ken Kelsch, the hard-charging cinematographer and Vietnam War veteran who shot the down-and-dirty classic Bad Lieutenant and 11 other features for iconoclastic director Abel Ferrara, has died. He was 76.

Kelsch died Monday at Hackettstown Medical Center in New Jersey after a battle with Covid and pneumonia, his son, Chris Kelsch, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“If you knew him, you probably have a story about him,” Chris wrote on Facebook. “He really was a great man, loved by many. A war hero who filled every room with his presence.
