Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history. And when we heard that there’s a live-action movie being made, alarm bells started ringing. Video game adaptations have seen an upgrade in quality in the last few years, and the success of The Super Mario Bros. movie has inspired new projects like these.

With Wes Ball directing and Shigeru Miyamoto involved as a producer, expectations are high. However, history has shown that video game movies can easily go wrong. We still remember Far Cry and Tekken as painful reminders of how badly an adaptation can fail. To avoid the same fate, the Zelda movie needs to avoid these mistakes.

The video game movie curse has been running rampant for years as popular games get adapted into films that are largely inferior to the playable source material. It has become a continuous trend that worries fans, since their favorite games could have disliked adaptations. The curse happened again recently with Borderlands, which people already want a do-over for, and many fear it will strike again with the upcoming releases of A Minecraft Movie and Until Dawn.
However, some adaptations that failed in the past have gotten a second shot in recent years. The 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat and the commercially successful animated flick The Super Mario Bros. Movie are great redemption examples. Those games had prior adaptations in the 1990s, yet their modern interpretations were better because the filmmakers knew what to give fans. This is what many past video game movies, including Assassin's Creed and Max Payne, need now:...

It was a commercial success despite being a critical failure.

For the past three decades, Tekken has been the dominant king of 3D fighting games. Plenty of competitors have come and gone, from the weapons-heavy Soul Calibur series to the highly technical Virtua Fighter, but as the generations passed and players migrated from arcades to home consoles, few have managed to remain both relevant and consistently popular as Bandai Namco’s brawler.

A new Virtua Fighter title has been teased at CES 2025. While the trailer didn’t have true in-game footage, it provided proof of concept of what Virtua Fighter 6 may be like. It had a lot of heavy hits and great use of blocking, which are staples of the series. While it isn’t always the most exciting gameplay to watch as an audience, the series is extremely fun for die-hard fighting game fans.
While Virtua Fighter was one of the main pillars of 3D fighting games, a new title hasn’t been released since 2006. While many updates of Virtua Fighter 5 have appeared, including Final Showdown, Ultimate Showdown, and soon R.E.V.O., they were all still the same core game. The weird, wonderful world of Baldur's Gate 3 cosplay is vast and varied. Some cosplay is shockingly game-accurate, fooling fans into thinking they're looking at actual screenshots. Other cosplay takes its own liberties, but manages to capture familiar characters in new and refreshing ways.
And still other cosplay puts our favorite characters into completely foreign situations we never would've imagined them in, but manages to capture the essence of those characters so perfectly that we can't help but look on in awe. That's exactly what Reddit user Dat-Baka achieved with their recent cosplay photoshoot, in which they visited a laundromat dressed as Astarion after attending a convention. The photoshoot has garnered praise for its accuracy and creativity.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 expanded its ensemble and adapted more lore from the video games. The sequel is also packed with Easter eggs, including references to anime like Dragon Ball and Akira.
Dragon Ball continues to influence the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and the fan base knows this. Screenwriter Patt Casey admitted this also influenced the first Sonic movie's development. "It is true. The Chaos Emeralds and going supersonic, all these concepts were introduced to America in the Sonic games, but the Dragon Ball manga was already out in Japan," he told IGN. "So it's like Sonic was parodying Dragon Ball even at that time. But it's like we in America experienced it first in Sonic before Dragon Ball hit. So the influence has always been there. I mean, we talked about Dragon Ball in the writer's room on Sonic 1 even."

The ultimate goal for most Soul Reapers in Bleach is to one day achieve bankai. Reaching this level makes many times stronger, as well as making them qualified for captainship. Several of the lieutenants are shown training to reach this level. Lieutenants have fewer required qualifications than captains, so technically they don't even need to have shikai, but those that do are aiming even higher. Shuhei Hisagi is regularly considered by his peers to be the closest to actually releasing his zanpakuto a second time. However, he's got quite a few internal issues to muddle through before he accomplishes that. He struggles with his shikai as is, so bankai isn't quite in reach for him.
Captain Kensei Muguruma of the Ninth Division is the person pushing for this the most. Hisagi is one of his two lieutenants, but he's the one who is assigned this goal. However, Hisagi's history with Kaname Tosen,...

Originally announced in 2019, 2Xko is Riot Games' upcoming take on the fighting game genre, using the League of Legends IP that the company began with. As seen with the Moba, Tactical Shooter, and Autobattler genres, Riot has a history of entering into beloved game spaces and crafting its own polished, exciting take. 2Xko appears to be no different, and is supported by an announced roster which features an already robust selection of fan-favorite League of Legends champions.
With eight announced champions, the tag fighter still has a ways to go in creating its final launch roster. The surprise Pac-Man spin-off Shadow Labyrinth, which was first teased in an episode of Amazon’s anthology animated series Secret Level prior to a trailer for the video game itself at The Game Awards 2024, is now executive produced by Tekken chief Katsuhiro Harada.

This raises the possibility that The Swordsman, the protagonist of Shadow Labyrinth, will make an appearance as a guest character in Tekken. Given that Bandai Namco owns both Tekken and Pac-Man and that The Swordsman is a real humanoid fighter with a sword, it would make sense in many ways. However, what is Harada’s own opinion?

The final character for the first season of Dlc in Tekken 8 has been announced, and it’s one that’s going to disappoint many. After announcing that a second season was in development, Bandai Namco teased that the final character for Season 1 would be revealed during The Game Awards 2024. During the presentation, the promised trailer revealed that Clive Rosfield, the protagonist from Final Fantasy 16, would be the next Dlc character for Tekken 8.
Reaction to the announcement from Tekken and Final Fantasy fans was rather mixed. Guest characters are nothing new to the Tekken franchise, so some form of crossover appearance was all but a certainty going into the show. The problem is, many fans had their hopes up for a very different Final Fantasy character: Tifa from Final Fantasy 7, who remains conspicuously absent in the popular fighting game series.

The Walking Dead is a very grounded story that takes place in the modern day, but it originally had a sci-fi setting no fan could have ever expected. Since the danger humanity faces between the zombies and other hostile humans is pretty realistic in the original comic, it's shocking to learn that The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard was originally going to take a completely different direction.
When it comes to telling a story, it's very rare that the first iteration of the story is what actually makes it to print. As reported by Cbr, instead of being a zombie apocalypse set in the modern day, The Walking Dead nearly had two different settings. One of the first ideas was that instead of taking place in contemporary times, The Walking Dead would take place on Earth in the far future with the extra twist of a utopian society.

Live-action adaptations of video games have historically struggled to meet fan expectations, and that is especially true of films based on fighting games. After several attempts in the 1990s and 2000s, fighting game movies all but vanished, but recently, they have begun to make a comeback. 2021 saw the release of Mortal Kombat, which received mixed reviews but performed well enough to warrant a sequel. Now, Capcom is throwing its hat in the ring with the game that essentially created the fighting game genre as it is known today: Street Fighter. Legendary Entertainment and Sony Pictures are currently developing a live-action film adaptation of the seminal game series, and aside from its 2026 release date, few details are known about it.

Survivor fans saw the return of Sol Yi and Sierra Wright during the latest episode. They arrived at Tribal Council looking good.
Sol and Sierra were the first two members of the Survivor 47 jury. Neither one expected to be voted out so early, but one-sided votes sent them to Ponderosa.
Neither castaway looked pleased as they strode into the Tribal Council as the rain poured down on them. But they certainly turned heads and drew the attention of Survivor fans and the remaining players.
“Dude, when Sol walked into Tribal, it was like a bomb went off,” Gabe Ortis told Entertainment Weekly in his exit interview.
Gabe was voted out during Survivor 47, Episode 10, making him the third jury member. It afforded him a front-row seat when Sierra and Sol walked in.
EW asked if Gabe was distracted at Tribal Council by the “shirtless vest look” Sol sported. He gave an honest response to the query.

2025 is set to be a big year for fighting game releases, and yet the Soul Calibur franchise is mysteriously not among them. Despite the fact that numerous other big names like Fatal Fury and a second Capcom Fighting Collection are set to release next year, Soul Calibur hasn't seen a new entry since back in 2018. Considering how many years the franchise has been around, it feels like a major fighting game staple is slowly being forgotten.

Although longtime Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada’s efforts to include KFC’s Colonel Sanders as a guest fighter in the series were unsuccessful, fans still continue to push the idea. Tekken is probably one of the most legendary gaming franchises of all time. Beginning its journey almost three decades ago, this game has won every fan’s heart. With the arrival of Tekken 8, the franchise marks its 11th installment overall. Another gaming series that has been giving heavy competition to this franchise is Mortal Kombat.

Because of how long the series has run, Bleach has managed to balance its wide cast of characters fairly well. Plenty of characters get enough screen time to show development, and they usually come with interesting abilities as well. However, as the Thousand-Year Blood War adaptation is much shorter than the original series, characters are given much less time on the whole. While the anime has given interesting moments to many characters that weren't in the manga, it still brushes off moments that could have been flushed out more.
The Visored have been an important part of the story since Ichigo came back from Soul Society the first time. They got plenty of character development, and while their bankai weren't shown in the anime, they are still power houses. The Visored have always been in a unique position due to their nature. It has put them at odds with both Aizen and the Soul Society.

Several characters have become champions of the King of Iron Fist Tournament, but hands-on time with Tekken 8's anticipated return of Heihachi brings back one of its most ruthless with a vengeance. Bandai Namco studios released one of gaming's most complex and rewarding fighters and have continued to expand Tekken 8 with beloved Dlc characters that have added even more depth to the game. Still, Heihachi's return is a dramatic step in making Tekken 8 the ultimate version of itself.
Tekken 8 spoiled fans with incredible visuals, tight gameplay, and a flurry of different game modes to thoroughly entertain players of all skill levels. With accessible training and thrilling storylines for even newcomers to enjoy, there hasn't been a better time to try the Tekken series than with the latest installment of the game. The developer seems more than prepared to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary, which wouldn't have felt right without Heihachi in the newest game.

Creators like DanTDM have questions about the health content of Lunchly’s products. Are the lunchboxes actually good for you, or is Lunchly an attempt to make a quick buck off fans who many not know better? Paul says the brand’s detractors are idiots. What else is new?

Thanks to a new collection, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has been re-released on modern systems along with many other arcade classics from the franchise. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 in particular is a cult classic of the fighting game genre, along with its direct sequel, both of which are still being played in tournaments to this day. Thanks to the age of the game, players have gotten very good at it and know the original version inside-out, but this latest version isn't quite the same as the one that everyone knows and loves.
As with every re-release, the version in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is slightly more than just a pure port. There's a museum mode, where the player can access art and music from all the games in the collection in one place, and fighter awards that stretch across all titles in the collection. Team Asobi’s 2024 platform game, Astro Bot, is the biggest crossover episode you will see this year. The game featured 150 iconic PlayStation character cameos and not once you will feel like it was overdone. Initially, the creators expected to get 50 cameos since they expected a lot of partners to refuse, however, they got almost all the cameos they wanted.

The gaming community has high hopes for Astro Bot and recent leaks from the gameplay footage have all but confirmed that this is the ultimate dream for every hardcore gamer. Players expected to see a handful of easter eggs, references, and even cameos from notable PlayStation mascots but did not expect to see more beyond the first-party purview.
Team Asobi apparently did not hold back and wanted to give other iconic video game franchises their time to shine in this project to see how far the game industry has come. There is no telling what other cameos are being held back.

Few fighting game series have the longevity and popularity of Tekken. From its inception in 1994, its core gameplay mechanics have stayed consistent through many iterations, while also building upon it with updated features. This allowed for the movement, skill, and knowledge that players accumulated throughout the years to carry over with each new entry. The excitement for Tekken 8 reached a fever-pitch when it was released earlier this year and it’s already had a huge impact around the fighting game community.

Fighting games have a reputation of being extremely difficult, too mentally taxing, and mechanically prohibitive to newcomers. While fighters at their core are no more complex than other genres, many different fighting games have tried to become more welcoming to a wider audience, while working to keep the same depth that competitors at the highest level fall in love with. Riot Games’ upcoming fighter, 2Xko, is the latest attempt to balance these frustrations.
Formally known as Project L, 2Xko was announced back in October 2019 during Riot Games’ 10-year anniversary celebration.

This past weekend was the annual Evo fighting game tournament in Las Vegas. Beginning in 1996, Evo is one of the premier events where players from across the world get to show off their skills in various fighting games such as Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, The King of Fighters, and Super Smash Bros.
Aside from the different tournaments, many developers of these games like to make announcements. Be it an upcoming online update, the reveal of a new character, or even a new game, we also get to hear from the developers themselves on some of their potential future plans.
One of those people was Shuhei Matsumoto, a producer at Capcom who is attached to the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom collection that was announced this past June and is set to release later this year. Since the collection’s announcement, fans have speculated what it could mean for a possible new game in the series.

The soon-to-release Netflix anime series Terminator Zero will channel the slasher horror tone of the original 1984 film according to its showrunner.
Next month sees the premiere of Terminator Zero, an eight-part Netflix anime that will add to the Terminator series in ways that has already gotten us rather excited with the snippets we’ve seen so far. However, showrunner Mattson Tomlin has popped up to pique our interest further by stating that the anime is suffused with the same “serial killer” vibes as the 1984 film which set the franchise into motion.
According to CNET, the series will take place directly after 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and will ignore all of the films and shows that came afterwards, instead sending the franchise in a new direction. That reveal alone is enough to get us interested, but Tomlin’s quote (to Empire) that the series’ tone will channel the dark slasher...

Crossovers between different fictional universes began in the first place for the simple fun derived from matching up characters against their equally formidable counterparts, which is why crossovers are more common in fighting-based narratives. Some of the most popular fighting games, like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter, have often brought their iconic characters together for battle royales, much to the fans’ amusement, and this time Netflix has wisely adopted the same strategy. After acquiring the rights to the anime adaptations of two of the most well-regarded fighting manga, Baki the Grappler and Kengan Ashura, Netflix took the time to build a fanbase among the viewers through multiple seasons. Eventually, just as both anime are on the verge of reaching their peak, Netflix has decided to pit some of the best fighters of both universes against each other in the recently released Baki Hanma vs. Kengan Ashura movie.
