Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.
Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. Wolsh reflected on the practical effects teased in the...

Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here)… and in the process, spawned a franchise. There was the goofy comedy of The Return of the Living Dead Part II, the “Romeo and Juliet with zombies” love story Return of the Living Dead ///, and a couple sequels nobody paid much attention to, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave. The franchise has been dormant for nineteen years – but last year, it was announced that Muck and Kill Her Goats director Steve Wolsh, who also happens to be the CEO of the company Living Dead Media, was developing a reboot of The Return of the Living Dead. The living dead are ready to make a big return next year.
Living Dead Media has revealed that a new Return of the Living Dead film is due in 2025, a year that marks the milestone 40th anniversary of the 1985 horror cult classic. In doing so, the company and its CEO Steve Wolsh have confirmed details about the project and teased it with a holiday-themed trailer. The clip, which dropped today, not coincidentally on Friday the 13th, features the franchise’s spooky Tarman emerging in a snow covered cemetery dragging a Christmas tree across the landscape as a rendition of “Silent Night” helps set the mood. The teaser does its job by announcing a Christmas 2025 planned releases.

We had learned just about a year ago that rights holders Living Dead Media were developing a reboot of the Dan O’Bannon-created horror-comedy franchise The Return of the Living Dead, which hasn’t spawned a new movie in almost 20 years. This week, Bloody Disgusting has learned that a big announcement is going to be made by the team tomorrow, December 13.
In the meantime, Living Dead Media and director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats) have provided Bloody Disgusting with two exclusive still images from that upcoming Return of the Living Dead movie, suggesting that the project is indeed still happening and coming soon.
Both exclusive images tease a Christmas/Winter theme for the next installment in the Return of the Living Dead franchise, the first one seemingly teasing a chilly new take on the Tarman.
Check out the images below and expect Living Dead Media’s announcement (plus a teaser!

One of the greatest horror-comedies of all time, Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 movie The Return of the Living Dead ended up launching a franchise that to date includes five total movies, but it’s been nearly twenty years since the direct-to-video release of fourth and fifth installments Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave.
What’s the latest on the franchise, you might be wondering? Well, we had learned just about a year ago that rights holders Living Dead Media were planning a Return of the Living Dead reboot with Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats) attached to direct, this information gleaned from the company’s official website. That website, it seems, is no longer online.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

Perhaps someone needs to call more paramedics, because the Return of the Living Dead franchise is getting rebooted.
Per Collider, it's been announced that Return of the Living Dead is getting a new installment, but it won't be an outright remake of the original film. The intent is to expand upon the existing world that was introduced in the original movies, though it's unclear if this means that there will be any returning actors featured in prior installments. In any case, a sixth Return of the Living Dead film is officially in the works, and it's promised that the reboot will include the same brand of R-rated dark humor the series is famous for.

From the moment it arrived in all its 80s gory glory, The Return of the Living Dead has been widely regarded as one of the great horror comedies of not only the decade but of all time, combining some memorable animatronic special effects with plenty of jokes centered on the zombie horror movies of past decades. Now it looks like the franchise is coming back for more brains with a reboot-continuation being planned by Living Dead Media.
Currently, or at least prior to the WGA writer’s strike and now the SAG actor’s strike, there were many 30-40 year old franchises that were being resurrected for new audiences, and having been dormant for 20 years and horror movies currently killing it at the box office – pun most definitely intended – Return of the Living Dead could be a big hit with a whole new generation as well as those looking for a nostalgic throwback.

One of the greatest horror-comedies of all time, Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 movie The Return of the Living Dead ended up launching a franchise that to date includes five total movies, but you mostly only hear horror fans talking about the first three. The first sequel came in 1988 and featured returning actors, but 1993’s Brian Yuzna-directed Return of the Living Dead 3 went in an entirely different direction with a wildly different storyline. It’s become a cult classic in recent years, thanks in large part to its central villain, a sexy zombie played by Melinda Clarke.
And then we got Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave, both released direct-to-television in 2005. Why don’t horror fans talk about them? Well, they took the franchise down a not-quite-desirable path, the two films cheaply made and shot at the same time. And...

Forget Jason, Freddy, Michael, and all of the rest. There is only one group out there who knows how to cut deeper than anyone else, the MPAA. Recently Rob Hall's upcoming film ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 went before them, and guess what?!?
They immediately slapped the movie with the dreaded Nc-17 rating. Having already seen the movie, I can tell you as a fact there's no way this wasn't going to happen. Ltr 2 is riddled with some of the most insane bits of violence and kills we've ever seen. Not kidding either. This flick is Nuts, and we love it!
When reached for comment about the rating, director Hall chimed in with the following ...
"I think it's great the MPAA had a problem with almost every kill in the film", says Hall. "If they didn't, we wouldn't have done our jobs correctly. They have a job to do,...

Week Two of shooting ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 was one of the more interesting times on set. Insane amounts of blood, new faces, and watching a very dedicated cast and crew come together to make the impossible possible have demonstrated everyone’s dedication to bringing horror fans a new installment in the Laid to Rest franchise.
Late in Week One we lost cast member Michael Biehn, who had to depart to film another production in Tunisia, but that meant we got to welcome the awesome Owain Yeoman as our new Detective King. I used to be a huge fan of Fox’s “Kitchen Confidential” so was pretty psyched he was able to join the team.
Which brings me to some new info I can finally reveal. We’ve been doing our best to keep a lot of stuff under wraps, but we’ve gotten our official cast list and synopsis finalized,...

American actress/singer Jana Kramer faced death on the set of 2005 film "Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis" - after local Romanian doctors misdiagnosed a life-threatening gallbladder sickness. The "One Tree Hill" star had to halt the overseas shoot because she was too sick to work, and Romanian medics determined she needed to have her appendix removed.
Kramer tells Maxim magazine, "I immediately started feeling sick. But I didn't want to complain and be considered a problem. Eventually I had to go to the hospital. The doctor could barely speak English but said I had to get my appendix out."
But when Kramer wasn't getting better after the operation she flew back to the U.S. to get a second opinion and was stunned when she was told the Romanian doctors had taken out the wrong body part - and she needed a different organ removed.
She explains, "They (doctors in Romania) did the surgery,...
