XDefiant has been out for over two months now. The free-to-play first-person shooter by Ubisoft took the world by storm during its closed beta days, garnering a ton of hype and attention.

When the game launched, it quickly reached over one million players and has since reached over 11 million unique players. However, despite the game’s immediate success, it appears that XDefiant game modes are already being abandoned.

In the extremely competitive free-to-play shooter environment, Ubisoft’s new game is now falling behind.

XDefiant – Already Running Into Problems

The game’s newest map, Daytona, launched a few days ago on August 1, recreating a street racetrack for the linear game modes; Escort and Zone Control.

Ubisoft launched a dedicated XDefiant Daytona Playlist to those who wish to only play the new map and get used to its surroundings. This is normal for free-to-play shooters whenever a new map gets introduced, allowing...

Twitch let users co-watch Prime Video during the pandemic. Now that feature is going away.
Image
Twitch is doing away with a feature it introduced during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. On April 2, 2024, the streaming platform’s users will lose access to Watch Parties, which enabled co-viewing for Prime Video content.

An update pinned to the top of the Watch Parties Faq page revealed the feature’s impending sunset. “We launched Watch Parties in 2020 to offer streamers a way to enjoy Prime Video content with their communities,” the note reads. “While some streamers incorporated Watch Parties into their streams, usage of Watch Parties on Twitch has declined over the years, so we are removing it and investing these resources in other features.”

Twitch first rolled out Watch Parties in April 2020, just a few months after Covid-19 was first identified. (Has it really been four years already?) To give its community members a socially-distanced way to hang out with one another, Twitch teamed up with parent company Amazon,...

Three years after its pandemic-era breakout, Clubhouse pivots “to be more like a messaging app”
Image
Clubhouse is changing. The app known for popularizing live audio chatrooms is launching a new format based around collaborative audio messages.

The app offered details about “the new Clubhouse” in a post on its official blog. It will push its new format — simply referred to as “Chats” — by encouraging users to send messages to their friends. “When you open Clubhouse, you’ll now see friends — not just the rooms that happen to be live,” the post reads.

The biggest difference between Clubhouse’s two formats is that its rooms are focused on live interactions, while Chats are asynchronous. Users who upload Chats can share them with friends. The people who view the Story-like pieces of content can then add their own commentary. The result, as described by The Verge, is “a kind of voice collage/conversation.”

Clubhouse’s live audio rooms, which helped it become a tech unicorn during the pandemic,...

Dean Cain and Jeremy Sumpter in Clubhouse (2004)
Research: In Finland, podcast listening takes time away from other media consumption
Dean Cain and Jeremy Sumpter in Clubhouse (2004)
A research conducted by Norstat, on behalf of Podimo, in the spring examined the podcast listening market in Finland. According to the study, podcasts are displacing other forms of media consumption, particularly traditional electronic media. Of the respondents, 37% reported that podcast listening significantly or moderately reduces their radio listening time, while 23% said the same for television viewing.

Johannes Saukko, the Country Manager at Podimo, explained, "Podcast listening in Finland is on the rise, as is the willingness to pay for podcasts. The engagement with podcasts is high, and the time spent on them naturally comes at the expense of other activities. However, podcasts can also be enjoyed in situations where visual content consumption is not feasible, providing listeners with additional opportunities and enhancing their engagement with podcasts.”

Podcasts are predominantly consumed on the go, although many people also listen to them at home. Saukko added, "Tasks like cleaning and other...

How To Use Twitter Spaces On Desktop
Image
Twitter Spaces is available on the web (both desktop and mobile), but the functionality is quite limited compared to the Android and iOS apps. Twitter began testing Spaces in December 2020, and the feature rolled out to all users in late 2021, with the Android version of Twitter's app updated to support Spaces even before Clubhouse hit the platform. Twitter Spaces lets users have live audio conversations with other users, and is a popular feature on the platform.

While Twitter Spaces is primarily targeted at app users, the platform opened up the feature to the web in 2021. Twitter Spaces is available on both the desktop and mobile websites, but users accessing the feature from here can only listen to an ongoing session. Unlike the iOS and Android apps, Twitter desktop users will not be able to host or speak in a Space. Since the desktop access to Twitter Spaces has been around...

Clubhouse, Which Blazed A Trail In Live Audio, Is “Resetting” And Laying Off 50% Of Its Staff
Image
Clubhouse, the live audio app that once drew big buzz and interest in a multi-billion-dollar takeover, is “resetting” and letting go of 50% of its staff of a few dozen workers.

Founders Rohan Seth and Paul Davison sent a memo to employees to break the news Thursday. “We’re deeply sorry to be doing this, and we would not be making this change if we didn’t feel it was absolutely necessary,” they wrote.

Laying out their reasoning for what they called a “resetting” of the company, the pair cited the reopening of society after the shutdowns of the pandemic. “As the world has opened up post-Covid, it’s become harder for many people to find their friends on Clubhouse and to fit long conversations into their daily lives,” the memo added. “To find its role in the world, the product needs to evolve. This requires a period of change.”

Clubhouse to Lay Off More Than 50 Percent of Staff
Image
Clubhouse, the once-buzzy live audio app that has seen usage decline compared to its pandemic heyday, is laying off more than half of its staffers as the company’s co-founders seek to pare the organization back to a “smaller, product-focused team.”

In a letter shared publicly and with employees Thursday, Clubhouse co-founders Paul Davison and Rohan Seth said the company would be “scaling back” by more than 50 percent. A spokesperson for Clubhouse declined to share the exact number of employees impacted by the layoffs, though the company had around 100 employees as of last October.

“We need to reset the company, eliminate roles and take it down to a smaller, product-focused team. We arrived at this conclusion reluctantly, as we have years of runway remaining and do not feel immediate pressure to reduce costs. But we believe that a smaller team will give us focus and speed, and help us launch...

Spotify Shutters Live Audio App
Image
Spotify is shutting down its standalone live audio app, Spotify Live, at the end of this month as the audio giant turns away from live programming, a company spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday.

As user interest in the live audio app Clubhouse gained momentum during the earlier months of the pandemic, Spotify sought to follow suit with its own live audio offering. In March 2021, the audio company acquired Betty Labs, the maker of the live audio app Locker Room, for 57 million euro (or roughly $67.7 million at the time). By June 2021, Spotify launched its standalone live audio app, Spotify Greenroom, and later rebranded the app to Spotify Live the following year, promoting the rebrand with live shows from Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, comedian and actor Hasan Minhaj and creator Tana Mongeau, among others.

At the time, Spotify also forged ahead with some of its existing live programming deals,...

‘Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen’ Renewed by Bravo Through 2023
Image
Bravo announced Wednesday that the network has renewed late-night talk show “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” through 2023. Cohen, who is the face of Bravo, has been the “Watch What Happens Live” host and executive producer since the show premiered in 2009.

“What Watch Happens Live” has proven to be adaptable during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Cohen at first taping the show from his apartment with virtual guests. In fall 2020, Cohen returned to the studio — called “the clubhouse” — solo, but his guests remained virtual. In June of last year, Bravo announced that guests would once again appear from the clubhouse, along with a socially distanced, smaller audience. During the recent omicron surge — when Cohen himself got Covid for a second time — the show’s guests have been a mixture of remote and in-studio, and it has continued to be filmed in front of an audience. The talk show’s flexible...

Andy Cohen’s late-night Bravo talk show, “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,” will again welcome audiences into the show’s studio for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began in March 2020. A solo Cohen returned to his Manhattan studio, called “the clubhouse,” last fall, but his guests and the show’s audience have remained virtual. That will change on June 13, when Uzo Aduba and John Benjamin Hickey will be Cohen’s first in-studio guests on “Watch What Happens Live” in more than 15 months.

For social distancing purposes, the audience tally has been reduced to 20, which is down from its previous 36 — and audience members have to be vaccinated.

After A Year On iOS, Clubhouse Launches Invite-Only Beta On Android
Image
Clubhouse, the hip app born in quarantine that enables live audio conversations, has finally launched on Android after being available exclusively on iOS for roughly one year.

In a blog post written by co-founders Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, Clubhouse says it has “always taken a measured approach to growth, keeping the team small, building in public, and getting feedback from the community along the way.” Even now, the company notes, the app is not available to everyone: new members of the community must be invited by current users.

Clubhouse is similarly available in beta on Android in the U.S. via the same waitlist and invite system, and will roll out to other English-speaking countries and then become available globally, Davison and Seth say. Before the broad rollout, Clubhouse says it will collect feedback and fix repairs while rolling out new features like payments and club creation.
