Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”
The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.” Screenwriter Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) put the script together based on a box of love letters.
Leigh earned her place in cinema history as Scarlett O’Hara, the central character in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” opposite Clark Gable. Leigh also played the landmark role of Blanche DuBois opposite Marlon Brando in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,...

Exclusive: As New York City battles through Covid-19, enduring more cases and deaths than anywhere in the world, the film and TV production sector appears to be a long way from resuming its previously brisk pace.
A new option for producers is now poised to open two hours away, however: Upriver Studios in Saugerties, a town along the Hudson River about 10 miles from Woodstock. Upriver will offer about 104,000 square feet of sound stages and other production space in a former manufacturing facility retrofit by a group led by actress and director Mary Stuart Masterson.
“As crazy as it seems to be launching a business in a pandemic,” Masterson said, “it turns out Upriver Studios is the right place at the right time for productions who need to find a safe haven.”

“The Holdouts,” a new web series raising money on Kickstarter, is an ode to what some have called vanishing New York. It’s the story of “a blue collar guy who just wants to get day-wasted for three dollars,” but every gin joint he used to haunt has turned into a Starbucks or a Duane Reade or a Bank of America. Created by Dan Menke and Stephen Girasuolo, Menke wrote the script specifically with stars Kevin Corrigan (“Goodfellas,” “The Departed”) and Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) in mind.
“Kevin and I for a while had been sending each other the Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York thing, bitching at four in the morning about something closing,” Menke said, speaking from his rent-controlled Williamsburg studio. “Being a native New Yorker as he is, the underlying theme of people being priced out and the struggle to try to stay here was definitely something Kevin connected with.” For years after meeting Corrigan, Menke wrote possible projects. “I would periodically get up the nerve to send them to him,” the writer said, “and he liked this one.”
Menke met Bartok when the actor appeared on his monthly variety show hosted by New York’s filthiest marionette, The Arty Need Show. Originally, the show was about two down and out actors — with a running gag that Corrigan would always get recognized for his role in “Goodfellas,” while Bartok got mistaken as someone’s cousin’s ex. “With the added backdrop of gentrification, the project has deepened exponentially,” said Bartok. “It gives it that meaning, that edge, that wow, this is relevant.”

Though he may be less recognizable than Corrigan, Bartok cut his teeth with bit parts in classics like “The Fisher King,” and “School Ties.” More recently, he has written and produced two features; “The Cake Eaters,” with Kristin Stewart and Bruce Dern, which won best feature at The Stony Brook Film Festival in 2008, and “Fall to Rise,” starring Daphne Rubin-Vega.
The gentrification subject is particularly relevant to Bartok, whose artist mother moved him to Soho when he was eleven. “We moved to Soho when it was bodegas and art galleries, that kind of ‘After Hours’ Martin Scorsese Soho, and over 20 years I watched it become this kind of Euro mall.” Bartok was a Soho holdout until five years ago, when he moved to the Fort Greene neighborhood in Brooklyn. “You couldn’t leave the house on weekends,” he said. “There was no neighborhood anymore.”
The series has a bit of an “Odd Couple” feel, with Bartok playing the naïve newbie and Corrigan schooling his character on the real New York. The team is hoping the five-minute episodes will gain momentum like the hit web series “High Maintenance,” and get picked up for television.
Why are such accomplished film and television actors turning to web content? According to Bartok, “these days, just business wise, when you have major movie stars doing pilot after pilot, and you’re competing with Tony winners for one episode of ‘Elementary,’ you’re like wow, this is it, it truly is an actor’s life.”
It almost sounds as tough as say, holding out on a New York apartment.
“The Holdouts” is produced by Savin Rock Entertainment. Help get it made by contributing on Kickstarter.

Inexcusably self-indulgent. Tarantino gratifies his enormous self-love and his amusement at his own genius at the expense of all else. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Tarantino’s last two films…
I’m “biast” (con): …but really hate some of his films, too
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Damn. So after the marvels of Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino has swung back to the Kill Bill style of filmmaking, which I described in my review of Basterds as a cinematic “circle jerk in which he and his fans get off on one another and how clever they all are to be such rapacious film geeks.” With the inexcusably self-indulgent The Hateful Eight, Tarantino has returned to the gratification of his enormous self-love and his amusement at his own genius at the expense of all else.
There are no characters to like in Eight.

On Monday, November 11, the highlight of AFI Fest 2013 is Alexander Payne’s Nebraska (7:00 p.m. at Tcl Chinese Theatre), likely to earn a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for veteran Bruce Dern, who earlier this year took home the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. (Photo: Bruce Dern, Will Forte in Nebraska.) Set in Kentucky (kidding), Nebraska accompanies an elderly man (Dern) and his son (Will Forte) as they travel from Billings, Montana, to Lincoln, Nebraska, so he can collect sweepstakes prize money he believes he has won. In sum, Nebraska is what’s called a Road Movie, in which the Road is a metaphor for Life. Shades of brothers Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise getting to know one another in Barry Levinson’s Rain Man,...

Usually when someone is described as “polarizing” it means that sensible people think they’re awful and foolish saps think they’re the greatest. Other times, it can be a matter of acquired taste, someone who seems weird and unlikeable at first and then over time, as you begin to understand what they’re about, becomes more interesting and cool. In other cases, people people’s impressions can be forever tinged by what their first exposure to someone is, and they refuse to change their minds, instead steadfastly clinging to their original conclusion because thinking differently is too much work.
I say all this because I think a sizeable contingent of the public has gotten Kristen Stewart entirely wrong. The first moment she seized most people’s attention was as Bella in Twilight, which developed a specific reputation for her as a person and as an actor, and she has...

Jules said, "One of my favorite films for Kristen Stewart is The Cake Eaters. It was Mary Stewart Masterson's directorial debut. On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

The woman who made her name as Bella Swan reckons her new role in Snow White and the Huntsman has a lot in common with a certain vampire-loving teenager. She talks here about her 'bad-ass girl power movie'
After a year of unsuccessful auditions, the nine-year-old Kristen Stewart told her mother she wanted to pack it all in. It hadn't been her ambition to act; she had wanted to be an archaeologist. But she lived in Los Angeles, where an agent saw her sing in a school play aged eight, and so inevitably the notion was put to her. She was interested initially. Her parents were crew members, and she had spent time on film sets where there was a feeling that: "we were all in this together, and we were making something worthwhile". hollywoodnews.com: Today, actress Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame finally turns 21. The child star turned serious actress has played in twenty-two released films spanning the past eleven years, and is confirmed for another six projects set to release between now and 2014.
Her first credited role came in 2001 when she played Sam Jennings in “The Safety of Objects”. In 2002, she co-starred with Jodie Foster as Sarah Altman in “Panic Room”, a role which won her status as a more serious child actor.
Though the next several years saw her mostly in minor roles, she often chose young characters dealing with mature issues. Films that saw her in more prominent roles, such as “Speak”, “The Cake Eaters”, and “Welcome to the Rileys” dealt more directly with loss of innocence themes.
Despite her current star power, which gives her access to big-budget mainstream roles, Stewart has shown a preference for complex characters in smaller films.

Maybe the entire world has already seen a young Kristen Stewart in this Porsche commercial from 1999, but it is new to us. Watch and “Awwww” with us, please:

She was completely captivating onscreen, and when we weren’t marveling over her acting skills we were enviously drooling over her legs. To some, Kristen Stewart is simply "the 'Twilight' girl." Her arresting turn as love-struck teen Bella Swan in the swoony series of vampire romance blockbusters put her on the map and earned her the mantle of "movie star." And for many young actors, this would have represented the chance to cash in, to do a whole bunch of well-paying wannabe hits with various supernatural love interests. Stewart, on the other hand, prefers the more challenging route: offbeat indies, parts that speak to her in a genuine way, and the occasional portrayal of an icon (like, say, Joan Jett). She only hopes that those who want to see her as nothing more than Bella will give her a chance."There's a road I'm going down now, and I'm aware that there's not as much of an audience for strange movies—for different, eclectic movies—and I totally accept that," she says.

Independent filmmakers have done everything from maxing out their credit cards to forming limited partnerships, creating hedge-fund tax shelters, squeezing relatives and friends and crowd-sourcing through websites like Kickstarter.com. But it gets increasingly challenging and they have to be ever more innovative about finding the money to make their movies. So now, a new approach: the tax-deductible donation. That's the idea that writer-actor Jayce Bartok has hit upon for his new film, Tiny Dancer, a drama about a former ballerina contending with her post-career life. Bartok, who wrote and acted in The Cake Eaters, the 2007 directorial debut for Mary Stuart Masterson that starred Kristen Stewart, has come up with a plan through which benefactors can contribute to the film's budget - and receive a tax deduction as a charitable donation. It's being done through The Independent Collective, which Bartok and his wife...

Kristen Stewart is already getting a lot of attention for Welcome to the Rileys, a film with James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo that opens in NY, La, and Boston on October 29th, and it looks like those who have dismissed her as a result of her Twilight time may have to rethink things.
As for me, such turns as Adventureland, The Cake Eaters, and to a certain extent, The Runaways, have already made me take her pretty seriously, but there is a quiet intensity to Welcome to the Rileys which may finally get through to a broader range of critics, and the general public. As for me, such turns as Adventureland, The Cake Eaters, and to a certain extent, The Runaways, have already made me take her pretty seriously, but there is a quiet intensity to Welcome to the Rileys which may finally get through to a broader range of critics, and the general public. Take a look at a few clips, and see what you think.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse cast members, among them Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Xavier Samuel, Dakota Fanning, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinelli, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ashley Greene, Julia Jones, and Elizabeth Reaser, were at The Jimmy Kimmel Show on Monday, June 14. (The [bottom] clip above just shows the Eclipse stars at the taping; there’s no sound.) The top clip takes you back in time. "Your fans are very enthusiastic," says host Jimmy Kimmel to Kristen Stewart, when she appeared on his show at the time Mary Stuart Masterson’s The Cake Eaters opened in March 2009. (Adventureland opened the following month.) Talk about understating the facts. In this old (but very interesting) clip, Stewart was greeted with wild applause and (female-sounding) screams. That’s one thing that’s curious about Kristen Stewart: she seems to be much bigger among women than among men. That must be (I think…...

Kristen Stewart may be an international superstar thanks to her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, but she actually had critics and moviegoers singing her praises well before Twilight (2008) exploded into theaters. Born to John and Jules-Mann Stewart on April 9, 1990, Stewart kicked off her acting career at just eight years old, in a school play, and just a couple of years later, after brief appearances in The Thirteenth Year (1999), The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), and The Safety of Objects (2001), she wowed audiences with a remarkable performance as Jodie Foster's diabetic daughter in the thriller Panic Room (2002). Stewart never looked back from there, mixing major studios films with indie projects, and amassing such credits as Cold Creek Manor (2003), Speak (2004), Catch that Kid (2004), Undertow (2004), Fierce People (2005), Zathura (2005), In the Land of Women (2007), The Messengers (2007), The Cake Eaters (2007), Into the Wild (2007), What Just Happened (2008), The Yellow Handkerchief (2008), and Jumper...

Hollywood — In late 2008, it was hard to find two hotter Hollywood talents than Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed. The co-stars and real-life best friends had just taken over Hollywood with the surprising success of "Twilight," had "New Moon" and other sequels on the way and were being courted by producers all over Hollywood. But rather than sign up for some generic teen-road-trip movie or romantic comedy, the duo chose to reunite ... in a fact-based drama/comedy that would have them playing men?
It was called "K-11," and from the moment of its inception it became one of the stranger projects being developed in the business — particularly because it seemed like such a daring choice for Stewart and Reed.

Now, the 19-year-old actress is back in theaters next Friday (February 26) with "The Yellow Handkerchief," a romantic drama she was cast in after Foster recommended her to the film's producer, six-time Oscar winner Arthur Cohn. "I followed Jodie's advice because she's a great actress and director," Cohn said of casting Stewart in "Handkerchief," a love story featuring old and new romances blossoming side by side.

Monday was Arbor Day for me. That is, I watched two Austin Film Festival films up at the Arbor Cinema. The best anyone can do is three features a day from this point on, but I was too busy watching a screener to make it any earlier (and more on that later).
I don't know how much of it was rainy Monday, post-conference, or just being out of downtown, but the Aff movies at the Arbor were not crowded. That's not to say it was empty -- there was a respectable sized crowd for both films I saw -- but no one was forced for sit in the front row. Keep that in mind for all venues for the next three days; unless you're late, you're likely to get into everything now. If it's at the Paramount, you'll get in.

Fans of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse's golden girl Kristen Stewart know The Cake Eaters. Why? Well, to put it simply, this was Stewart's masterpiece. In the film, she portrayed Georgia, a young lady stricken with a rare but crippling disease called Friedreich's Ataxia. Mary Stuart Masterson, who directed The Cake Eaters, won four awards for the film at four separate film festivals. For starters, she took the "People's Choice Award" for "Best Indie" in 2007. She also won the "Audience Award" for "Dramatic Feature" at the Ashland Independent Film Festival, the "Discovery Award" at the Sedona International Film Festival, and the "Best Feature" award at the Stony Brook Film Festival in 2008. The Cake Eaters was released starting in April of 2007 at the Tribeca Film Festival, but it didn't come to DVD until March of this year. Masterson had spent time, according to one report,...

In the biopic, 19-year-old Stewart has been set to carry out the role of Joan, who is the singer and guitarist of the 1970s all-girl rockband named The Runaways. She will be sharing screen with Dakota Fanning who will play Cherie Currie, Stella Maeve who is touted to star as Sandy West, and Alessandra Torresani who will portray Lita Ford.

Kristen Jaymes Stewart was but a newborn babe in arms on April 9, 1990. John and Jules Stewart brought her into the world on that day and bestowed her with that daring namesake. Eighteen years later, that very name would be one echoing from gleeful mouths across the globe - as she would make her way around to promote the world-renowned film she took the challenging lead in. Kristen Stewart’s advance to the metaphorical top has not been instantaneous, by a long shot, but her role in 2008’s Twilight would ring in not only her first year of adulthood, but also, it seems, a whole new professional lifestyle. Her start was ambitious, but Stewart’s beginnings in film were impressive, indeed. At eleven, Stewart took her first role in a film called The Safety Of Objects. Portraying Sam Jennings, that little lady stole the stage as an angst-ridden know-it-all that many eleven-year-olds find themselves to be.

Ta fan Jen writes in about Robs acting skillsnbspCan Rob Act? by Jen For many a Twilighter the name Robert Pattinson meant little until the man whos now become the obsession of every teen and 20something and in some cases their mothers hit the screen as the ideal man okay if you forget hes a bloodthirsty vampire. But no matter how popular hes become with the tweens or how hotly hes pursued by the paparazzi the question remains is Robert Pattinsons appeal merely the infatuation of the female audience or can he actually act? Based on reviews for his recentlyreleased Little Ashes it depends on who you ask. While the London Daily Express calls his portray of the late Salvador Dali a spirited performance others like MTVs Kurt Loder thought the film collapsed as soon as Pattison dressed to look like a foppishly twisted version of Little Lord Fauntleroy appeared on screen.

The Cake Eaters, the short but compelling film just released to DVD this March, stars (the star that truly is) Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and actress Adventureland Kristen Stewart, and for good reason. On another note, Bruce Dern was surprisingly cavalier in the film. As a fan of Big Love, the HBO television series centering around a polygamous family (starring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Bill Paxton, Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny, and Dern, amongst others), I know Bruce Dern as the love-to-hate father of Bill and Joey Hendrickson, with a sharp... The same, too, can be said for Aaron Stafford (Beagle) and Jayce Bartok (Guy). These two were careful to present their characters in a modest light. In turn, their presence in the film contributed well to is overall feel and effect..

Kristen Jaymes Stewart, who is currently in the midst of filming The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is officially nineteen years old today (April 9th)! Including her current projects (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, K-11, and The Runaways), Stewart's youth has proved no obstacle to accomplishment as she boasts twenty-two films (and counting) on her resume already. Written by Brett Weinstock If you read my previous review of “Twilight”, you may have noticed that I am definitely a fan of Kristen Stewart. Since watching her in “Panic Room”, I have always felt there was an undeniably unique quality about her. As her career progressed, I enjoyed most of the films she was in. After watching “The Messengers”, I remember something John Corbett said in his interview about the cast and crew. When referring to Stewart he said something like “she’s a one of a kind type of actress and possibly the best I have ever worked with…and she’s only sixteen.” Now, I am probably paraphrasing, but the point is simple- this girl can act. At this point you are probably wondering why I am talking so much about her talents and haven’t mentioned the film yet- that’s because this film, much like...
