The Assistant

Very Funny Take on Reality Shows

The Assistant starring Andy Dick is a very funny take on reality shows. Andy Dick is looking for a new assistant and several people are trying to win the job. At the end of each episode, he cuts a contestant. Sometimes I wonder if these people are actors or if they are real contestants. Andy has them sleep in the garage of his mansion and often has them doing odd jobs. He had won guy run a race for him to win 1st place. Another person had to train his cat to sit on his shoulder. While doing all these jobs, Andy continues to yell at these people. All in all, I rate this with the other spoof on Reality TV, The Joe Shmo Show II. It can be featured on MTV, the network that doesn't play music.

one line summary

Wow, Andy Dick really just isn't very funny or creative. I always kinda thought he was. He seemed funny on Newsradio, and when he took his pants off for that Entertianment Tonight interview, but give him his own show and this is what he comes up with, just a one-note joke of acting like a primadonna celebrity. The joke was old after one episode, and after struggling through the second I really have no desire to see any more. It was even edited to drag out the boring parts (the rose ceremony) and compress the funny parts (the quiz). He could have given the contestants all kinda of funny tasks to do, but he mostly just subjected them to pointless menial labour, to position him as a cruel dictator and continue the primadonna celebrity joke. The most interesting thing is the contestant's to-camera responses about his behaviour. I can't work out if they're really taking him seriously or if they were just told to pretend to. In addition to being unfunny a lot of it just seems staged. If the whole thing was in fact scripted and the show was marketed/presented as a scripted show I would have had different expectations and maybe accepted it for what it is, but spontaneity was what it really seemed to lack yet what they seemed to be striving for.

funny... in a bizarre way

There are two kinds of people in this world:

People who love Andy Dick and people who hate him. Being in the former of the two, I happen to enjoy Andy Dick's take on "reality". But this show isn't exactly "funny" in traditional Dick manner.

In fact the comedic moments come from seeing the contestants do ridiculous things to get an "entry level" job and a Scion.

Granted, he does have some funny parts, (i.e. his book: The Life And Times of Andy Dick; knocking over lit torches and setting bushes ablaze; etc) but this is certainly a dark comedy reality show.

But hey, who said dark comedy wasn't funny?

The Assistant

I happened to watch most of the episodes of this show. Andy's antics were mainly, from my view, pretty original and funny. Andy was a true bully to the contestants. On more than one occasion Andy referred to the contestants as "bitches". The show is a take on other reality T.V shows: One person leaves the show each week, one person goes onto eventually being the winner. "The Assistant" can be compared to Donald Trump's reality show, "The Apprentice". The eventual winner is given the chance to work full time with Andy, as his "Assistant". I definitely recommend watching the show. For anyone who is or is not a fan of Andy Dick, I would believe the show enjoyable.

Thumbs up to the Dick!

Boring

I am a bit surprised by the rating this show has here on IMDb because it is currently listed at over seven out of ten and I think it was honestly just a terrible overall and most of all a terribly unfunny fake reality series.

I guess it depends a lot on how you feel about the show's creator and star Andy Dick. I am not a huge fan although I have found him pretty enjoyable in the past in small doses, for example as a supporting actor on NewsRadio and in the Ben Stiller Show way back when. But as a leading guy I just find him incredibly annoying and his schtick wears thin awfully quickly, especially in more recent years where he's just become this weird and crazy person.

This show is the worst thing I've seen from him and that says a lot, I hated his movies.
