A couple of days ago I presented my editor with the brilliant idea of ranking Elvis Presley‘s songs to honor his birthday on January 8. Being a Mississippi girl, and having spent almost 30 years of that time living in the town of his birth, I am aware of his huge catalogue of hits, but picking just 25 out of such a variety proved to be more challenging than I anticipated. It has also been a reminder of the enormous impact that this boy from a small town made across three entertainment mediums and across several genres of music.
Born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Ms, Presley spent his first 13 years there, with his interest in music sparking from a guitar gifted to him, church hymns and local hillbilly singer Mississippi Slim. After the family moved to Memphis, Tn, in 1948, Presley was surrounded by many different styles of music, including country, hillbilly, gospel and blues,...

Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is Netflix's newest musical documentary, examining Elvis's tumultuous career and highlighting some of the songs he performed in his famous 1968 comeback special. The 1968 Elvis comeback special was a pivotal moment in his career, seeing him return to the stage after years of working in the film industry at the request of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.
Though some of Elvis Presley's best movies, such as Viva Las Vegas, are considered classics, Elvis is known best in pop culture history for his influence on music. The 2022 biopic, Elvis, examines the toxic relationship between the star and Tom Parker, who pushed him toward his more commercial appeal. As Forrest Gump explores the life of Tom Hanks' character, Forrest finds himself in the midst of some of the biggest historical events of the 1960s and '70s. However, the Forrest Gump true story is anything but, and this deliberate disregard for historical accuracy is where the movie gets its charm. Forrest Gump premiered in 1994 to critical acclaim, eventually winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Forrest Gump has polarized audiences ever since, with some viewing it as a hollow glorification of the 20th century, while others see it as a compelling tale of division and passion in American history.
Forrest Gump grossed around $678 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $55 million, the second-highest-grossing movie of 1994, only trailing behind The Lion King's $978.8 million earnings.

1994's Forrest Gump features Tom Hanks' title character meeting many real-life historical figures. Two of the only characters not to appear via archive footage were Elvis Presley and Dick Cavett. Gump also met several Presidents including Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.
Forrest Gump featured Tom Hanks' title character interacting with several well-known historical figures. The 1994 movie, which was based on the 1986 Winston Groom novel of the same name, was directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by Eric Roth. It was a major sensation in the mid-1990s, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide thanks to a gross of $678.2 million against its $55 million budget. It would then go on to win six Oscars, including Best Picture.
By the time the Forrest Gump ending catches up with the character in the early 1980s, he has the opportunity to meet quite a few real-life historical figures over the course of his adventures.

In Norman Taurog's 1963 film "It Happened at the World's Fair," Elvis Presley plays a crop-duster pilot named Mike whose crop-dusting plane was just repossessed by the local sheriff. While hitchhiking home, wondering how he'll get the money to buy back his plane, Mike comes upon the Seattle World's Fair. There, he instantly becomes smitten with a local nurse named Diane Warren (not to be confused with songwriter Diane Warren) played by Joan O'Brien.
To manufacture a reason to see the Fair's nurse, Mike pulls an 11-year-old boy out of the crowd and offers to pay the kid a quarter in exchange for a really, really hard kick to the shin. The kid is thrilled to have the money and dutifully thwacks the stranger. As Mike limps away, the kid mutters to himself "Adults. They're all nuts." The unnamed character was played by an uncredited Kurt Russell making his feature film debut.

Priscilla's music team made the controversial choice to exclude Elvis Presley songs from the biopic, resulting in an "out of period" music selection that is "very exciting." The decision not to include Elvis songs in Priscilla allows the film to divert focus away from Elvis himself and instead highlight the perspective of Priscilla as his ex-wife. By avoiding Elvis music, Priscilla had to find other cinematic means to convey Priscilla's perspective on Elvis, ultimately making the right decision and receiving rave reviews.

Before starring as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Jacob Elordi was only familiar with the King of Rock and Roll from Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.”
During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” Elordi sat down to discuss his role in the film, which centers on the life of Priscilla Presley (Cailee Spaeny) and her relationship with Elvis.
“The most I knew of Elvis was in ‘Lilo & Stitch,'” Elordi admitted. “Which is a lot, by the way.”
“Lilo & Stitch” follows Lilo (Daveigh Chase) and her friendship with an extraterrestrial creature she meets on the island of Hawaii, whom she names Stitch (Chris Sanders). Lilo, an avid Elvis Presley fan, teaches Stitch how to become a “model citizen” like the singer and, at one point, dresses Stitch up in a Presley-inspired ensemble. Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

It was only last year that audiences were granted a look into the life of music icon Elvis Presley, in Baz Luhrmann's Austin Butler-starring Elvis. However, the "Hound Dog" will soon return to the big screen in Sofia Coppola's upcoming project – though this film will instead center on his ex-wife Priscilla, a figure who many pointed out played only a minor role in Luhrmann's biopic. Starring Cailee Spaeny in the titular role, the film will explore Presley's life before, during, and after her relationship with the singer. The film will not, however, contain any of Elvis's music, with Elvis Presley Enterprises denying Coppola usage, as it has now been revealed that the film's soundtrack will instead be anachronistic.

It’s hard to believe there was a time when anyone doubted that Elvis Presley was the King. After exploding onto the national music scene in 1956 with his hip-swiveling performance of “Hound Dog” on The Milton Berle Show, Elvis racked up hit after hit. But his famously controlling manager, Colonel Tom Parker, signed him up to make movies and soundtrack albums during much of the ’60s, when The Beatles and other newer stars were stealing his pop culture thunder. Elvis went seven years without performing live, until 1968, when he got back onstage for a TV special then simply called Elvis. It was a concert so successful and career-redefining that we now call it the ’68 Comeback Special. His stunning performance helped him regain his throne as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. The new documentary Reinventing Elvis: The ’68 Comeback recounts how that consequential show wasn’t supposed to happen at all.

Lisa Marie Presley’s tragic, untimely death continues to take sad twists and turns. As a “legacy celebrity,” there is heightened public interest in her death and, in the four months since her passing, countless articles have been written about Lisa Marie’s estate and rampant speculation continues to surround her affairs.
When I wrote a THR guest piece earlier this year describing California’s post-mortem procedures in light of this matter, my inner idealist thought it would be the last time I would speak of Lisa Marie Presley’s estate. In a biopic about Elvis Presley, having a high volume of memorable songs is a must, and Elvis does not disappoint. A predictable route for an Elvis biopic would be to just include Elvis’s most iconic songs, but like Elvis itself, Baz Luhrmann takes an unconventional approach to the Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack. Rather than a typical “greatest hits” soundtrack, Luhrmann opts for a soundtrack of modern covers and original songs sampling Elvis’s classics by contemporary artists, which is an approach similar to Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.
The Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack includes a plethora of different kinds of songs to fill out its soundtrack. Covers like Måneskin’s “If I Can Dream”, original songs that sample iconic songs like Doja Cat’s “Vegas”, and reworkings of Elvis’s classics like “Craw-Fever” are just some of the offerings that underscore the film’s important moments. The musical biographical film Elvis was one of the biggest movies of 2022. The Baz Luhrmann-directed movie follows the life and career of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler), the iconic musician and movie star commonly dubbed the "King of Rock and Roll," told through the perspective of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Elvis made 287 million at the box office, making it the second-biggest music biopic of all time, behind Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). In 2023, Elvis became one of 10 movies nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture - with an impressive eight nominations in total.
The film is a front-runner for winning the Best Actor award for Austin Butler's lead performance as Presley. But at the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s annual gala and fundraiser on Saturday, the industry titan was given a special nod for his prolific body of work both on and beyond the screen as the evening’s honoree.
That Elfman’s pieces have honored both the legacy of film and classical composition was a complement to Laco itself, which was formed in 1968 to encourage classically trained studio musicians not to “drift too far away from the classical repertoire, the concert hall and recording and playing new concert music from contemporary composers,” previous gala honoree and composer James Newton Howard (The Fugitive, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Hunger Games) said in remarks ahead of presenting Elfman with the award.

Baz Luhrmann knows this awards season is going to continue to be bittersweet.
Et’s Cassie Dilaura spoke with the “Elvis” director at Spotify’s Best New Artist party ahead of the 2023 Grammy Awards this week, and he opened up about the “roller coaster of emotions” that he and the cast have been on following the tragic death of Lisa Marie Presley on Jan. 12.
“I’ve made films and they’ve all had extraordinary journeys. Nothing comes close to the ‘Elvis journey,” Luhrmann shared. “Forget the discovery of Austin [Butler], forget the pandemic, forget even the recent unimaginable sadness that everyone in the film has gone through with the loss of Lisa Marie, and then you have a high of the nominations for the Oscars and then the Grammys and we’re up for Best Soundtrack and all of that.”

One of the reasons "Forrest Gump" is a cherished movie is because of the way it lightheartedly traverses decades of key moments in U.S. history and popular culture through the eyes of an altruistic titular protagonist, Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) -- inspired by a couple of real-life blokes. In the eyes of the film, even one simple person can make a big impact on the world around them. The film cleverly blends these events with a fictional narrative to show the significance of Forrest's actions.
In "Forrest Gump," during Alabama Governor George Wallace's 1963 "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" event where he protested the de-segregation of schools, Forrest curiously watches from the crowd and then helps African-American student Vivian Malone when she drops her books on her way into the school.
Later, during an appearance alongside John Lennon on "The Dick Cavett Show," Forrest inspires the lyrics to Lennon's best-selling single "Imagine.

From new songs from Oscar winners Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Finneas to the long-awaited new track from Rihanna, these original compositions will aim to land on the category’s short list (which is announced Dec. 21) before making it to the home stretch when the nominations are announced next January.

The “America’s Got Talent” two-night finale kicked off on Tuesday, and proved to be even more bombastic than usual.
That was certainly the case with the show-stopping performance from Metaphysic, which has been dazzling “AGT” viewers with its AI-created photorealistic deepfake avatars of celebrities.
This time out, Metaphysic pulled out all the stops by bringing out no less than Elvis Presley himself, projected on a giant screen overlooking the stage, causing judge Simon Cowell’s jaw to literally drop.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is now streaming on HBO Max, complete with a star-studded cast, glittery and glamorous sets and a flamboyant soundtrack to match. Austin Butler, who stars as the King of Rock and Roll, sang quite a few Elvis songs himself (mixed with the vocals of The King himself).
But as is customary with a Baz Luhrmann film, the songs in “Elvis” aren’t exactly straightforward. The soundtrack features a number of contemporary artists incorporating various Elvis songs into new work, such as like Swae Lee and Dilpo sampling “That’s All Right” for their new song “Tupelo Shuffle” and CeeLo Green and Eminem using the opening of “Jailhouse Rock” in their “The King and I.” Kacey Musgraves lays her velvety voice over “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and Stevie Nicks and Chris Isaak sing “Cotton Candy Land.” Still other artists like Doja Cat came up with songs like “Vegas,...

Forty-five years ago, on Aug. 16, 1977, Elvis Presley was found dead in the bathroom of his palatial Graceland estate in Memphis — officially of cardiac arrest, but the medicine cabinet of prescription drugs in his system surely didn’t help. In the decades since, reviving Presley and his legacy has become a recurring pop-culture ritual. The campaigns have included a jukebox musical, numerous reissues and lavish box sets, an Edm remix, documentaries (most recently 2018’s Elvis Presley: The Searcher), and biopics (starring Kurt Russell and a pre-Miami Vice Don Johnson).

The specialty box office space has quickly adapted to the changing film landscape as many are shifting to virtual theatrical openings. Many indie and arthouse titles do day and date releases and are VOD-only so the transition, for the most part, is familiar territory for many distributors and production companies.

Long before struggling actress Pearl (Isabelle Fuhrmann) finds herself at the mercy of a powerful man who demands sex in exchange for her career advancement, she’s already been violated by another person bent on trading on Pearl’s personal trauma for their own ends. That Deborah Kampmeier’s “Tape” — per a title card, “based on true events” — is unable to reckon with the implications of its own plot in service to a story about pervasive sexual misconduct is one of many missteps the lo-fi #MeToo drama makes, highlighting how far even the most eager of allies still has to go.

“Tape,” a guerrilla indie drama that confronts some of the ways sexual harassment has been embedded in the entertainment industry, begins with Rosa (Annarosa Mudd) getting ready to go undercover — but really, she’s dressing for battle. After rigging herself up with a hidden camera, she mutilates her body in homage to Lavinia in “Titus Andronicus,” piercing her own tongue and using a razor blade to carve a bracelet of blood around her wrist. She then shaves off her long curly brown hair, leaving a scalp that’s more patchy than chic, and completes the look with dark magenta lipstick, a long black “Matrix” coat, and big sunglasses.
She then heads to a reality-show audition, pretending to be an actress in the waiting room. But really, she’s there to surreptitiously film what she sees, especially once she connects with Pearl (Isabelle Fuhrman), an ambitious but naive young actress. We’re not sure,...

We caught up with Fanning to discuss her Hollywood childhood, her commitment to strong roles,...

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.
