It is Linklater's tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.

Completely pointless

You're not gaining anything by watching this, or missing anything by not seeing it. It's exactly what it's described as. Sometimes there's a countdown, sometimes it's blank scratchy film, sometimes there's flashes of words scrolling past. This isn't a movie to be watched, and at 4 hours and 3 minutes long, you'd get the same out of watching 10 seconds as I did out of watching the whole thing. Thank you Criterion for preserving and streaming this, but I also wasted my time to be a Linklater completionist.
