It’s been a stellar year of cinema and pop culture-themed books, and the texts (and Blu-rays) in this round-up all make fine gifts. One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. It’s a satisfying companion to season three of Peaks, not to mention Frost’s own Secret History of Twin Peaks. So be sure to check out Nick Newman’s recent interview with the Peaks co-creator.
Live Cinema and Its Techniques by Francis Ford Coppola (Liveright)
The legendary Francis Ford Coppola has spoken of “live cinema” with regularity over the years, specifically with respect to 1981’s One From the Heart. That film, a box office flop now held in some regard, is an essential part of Live Cinema and Its Techniques, a fascinating new book authored by Coppola himself. Fear not, David Fincher fanatics, the “Mindhunter” interrogations will continue. Netflix announced via Instagram and Twitter on Thursday that its critically-acclaimed crime drama has been renewed for a second season less than two months after it bowed on the streaming service. The Joe Penhall-created series stars Jonathan Groff (“Looking”), Holt McCallany (“Sully”), Anna Torv (“Fringe”), Hannah Gross (“Unless”) and new kid on the block Cameron Britton, who took on the role of serial killer Ed Kemper to rave reviews. Crime drama is going through a bit of a heyday, considering the critical acclamations of the recently released “Murder on the Orient Express” and Netflix original “Mindhunter.” But only “Hannibal” fans understand what we all lost when the beautifully gruesome NBC drama went off the air in 2015.
The show’s creator Bryan Fuller empathizes with the many fans missing both the show and its iconic characters, such as Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter himself. This week, Mr. Fuller graced the Fannibal Family with some behind-the-scenes temp footage introducing Richard Armitage as Francis Dolarhyde for the first time, and it’s pretty steamy, folks.

Ross Lynch just returned home to L.A. after a six-week tour of Europe with R5, the pop-rock family band he formed with his two older brothers, his little sister and a childhood friend. The band's star has been on the rise since Lynch broke out as a tween star on Disney Channel's Austin & Ally and in the Teen Beach Movie franchise. Now 21, Lynch is promoting his first movie since his contract with the Mouse House ended: My Friend Dahmer, out now. Lynch plays the infamous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, as a high school outcast in the years before he would commit his first murder and go on to kill and sometimes cannibalize 16 other men from the late '70s to the early '90s. Lynch wasn't born until 1995, though, a year after Dahmer's death, so he had no idea who Dahmer was until receiving the script.

High school is a time when even the most centered people struggle with the turbulent nature of four years’ worth of emotional friendships, raging hormones and impending adulthood. And for those whose impulses are much darker -- like the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer -- it can be ground zero for what’s yet to come.
The new film My Friend Dahmer, which is in theaters on Nov. 3, explores the genesis of Dahmer’s desires through the prism of high school and the viewpoint of his friend, John “Derf” Backderf, who would grow up to write the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name on which the film is based. Alex Wolff, who steps into Derf’s shoes, tells Et the script thrilled him from the start because of its dual nature.

From movies, documentaries, novels and non-fiction books to plays and podcasts, serial killers have fascinated in pretty much every medium possible. The mind of a killer, their disturbing motivations, their often perverse behavior and their unknownable, sociopathic thinking is not unlike our obsession with the great white shark: culture is always fixated on apex killers and the more mysterious and impossible to peg, the more fanatical we are about their own preoccupations and psychotic neuroses.

Bunny Boorhees stalks Camp Carrot Lake in a new Tragedy Girls promo video that transforms cute animals into horror icons like Puppywise the Clown, Ferret Krueger, and more.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which is your favorite scripted TV show about sports? Old and current shows are fair game.
June Thomas (@junethomas), Slate
I was a big fan of the Freeform show “Make It or Break It,” about the lives of a group of elite gymnasts working toward their dream of competing in the Olympics. Even typing that sentence, I know how hokey it sounds, and yes, it touched on all the clichés about women’s gymnastics – eating disorders, overburdened parents, inappropriate relationships with coaches – but you know what, all those things bubble up in the real sport with depressing regularity.

This week’s question: In honor of “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” what is Nicole Kidman’s greatest performance?
Vadim Rizov (@VRizov), Filmmaker Magazine
I don’t know about “best” — I haven’t seen an embarrassing chunk of what are considered her most significant roles, and I’m weak on understanding acting — but the performance that sticks most in my mind (quite possibly because I saw it at impressionable high school age) is “Dogville.” Kidman is spookily withdrawn, like an observer alien in a human body dropped into a moral wasteland which she attempts to navigate with understanding and decorum until finally it’s just too much. 2014 was a big year for David Fincher. Not only was the director returning to theaters with “Gone Girl” in the fall, but he also signed on to co-create and direct an adaption of the UK series “Utopia” for HBO. Fincher had already earned acclaim in the television world for Netflix’s “House of Cards” the year before, and his move to premium cable sounded extremely exciting. “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn was set to join Fincher on the series, and the cast included Rooney Mara. But HBO pulled the plug in July 2015, and now we’ll never get to see Fincher’s “Utopia” on the small screen.
The British version of “Utopia” was written and created by Dennis Kelly and ran for two seasons on Channel 4. The story involved a group of people who find a manuscript for the sequel of a cult graphic novel that was rumored to...

Season 1 of Netflix’s “Mindhunter” begins and ends with an confounding pair of bookends: The series’ opening sequence closes with a hostage-taker shooting himself in the head, while the ending view we get of Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) shows him in a cold sweat on the floor of a prison hospital. Among the many questions of human behavior the show addresses in its opening batch of episodes, maybe the biggest is how one man can be so calm in the wake of watching a horrific suicide and be so affected by a single hug.
The answer might lie in the season-long effort to reframe the way audiences think about violence on a crime show. Apart from that grisly opening, we don’t actually see any on-screen killings, only descriptions filtered through a photograph or someone’s firsthand account. As Ford, Bill Tanch (Holt McCallany), and Wendy Carr (Anna Torv...

David Fincher’s new serial killer drama “Mindhunter” has only been available to stream for a couple days now, but it’s already turned into the latest must-binge Netflix offering. The series is based on John E. Douglas’ true-crime book
“Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” and stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany as FBI criminal profilers who interview some of the most notorious serial killers in history to understand what it is that makes criminals commit violent acts.
Netflix has already renewed “Mindhunter” for Season 2, and Fincher knows exactly where the story will be heading in the next round of episodes. Speaking to Billboard about the use of music in the 10-episode first season, Fincher let it slip that Season 2 will be tackling the Atlanta child murders that rocked the nation between 1979 and 1981.

The official trailer for Season 2 of Netflix’s “Lady Dynamite” shows us that no matter how illusory Maria Bamford’s comedy appears, this series is also achingly real.
Following the release of her hour-long Netflix special, “Old Baby,” it’s clear that Bamford isn’t slowing down anytime soon as the star continues to tackle the stigma of mental illness — in an unconventional way, of course. Season 2 continues the story of how Maria (Bamford) struggled with mental illness while also struggling with the reality of being a working actor in Hollywood. Guest stars announced this morning include Andy Samberg, David Spade, Fred Armisen, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Judd Apatow, Judy Greer, and Weird Al Yankovic.
Like its first season, the show appears to continue its standard of blindingly bright, yet charming visuals to engage the audience in the story. However, we now know that the experiments are far from over,...

“There’s a difference between being obsessed and being motivated,” Mark Zuckerberg blithely insists during the opening moments of “The Social Network.” But the thing about the characters in a David Fincher movie is that they never seem to know what that difference is. In fact, the same might be true of David Fincher himself. And thank God for that, because if the Denver native had any idea where to draw the line between determination and dementedness he probably would have left Hollywood after being fired off his first Hollywood feature. Three times.
Ever since he transitioned from visionary music video director to features, Fincher has established himself as one of the most idiosyncratic and indispensable voices of mainstream American cinema. One of the immediate takeaways from David Fincher’s new Netflix series, “Mindhunter,” is that there are a lot of creepy characters. Between the convicted criminals FBI Agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) visit in prison and the suspects they try to send there, the list of people who give us the heebie-jeebies grows faster than Holden’s ego.

Despite “Gone Girl” being one of the biggest hits of his career, it’s been a tough few years for David Fincher. He looked set to capitalize on the success of that movie, and the peak TV boom, with two HBO series: the semi-autobiographical 80s music-video-world dramedy “Videosynchrazy,” and the British conspiracy thriller remake “Utopia.” But budgetary issues and creative clashes saw production scrapped midway through the first season of the former, and the plug pulled on the eve of the pilot, which would have starred Rooney Mara, of the latter.

Ingrid Jungermann, unlike some of her contemporaries, does not balk at being called a lesbian filmmaker. “I think you should demand to be called a queer filmmaker,” she said. “It’s a badge. I think it’s kind of irresponsible when people are like — ‘I wanna be known as just a filmmaker.’ That insinuates you’re not proud.” One look at Jungermann’s already impressive but still fledgling career, and it’s easy to see where her loyalties lie.

Lars von Trier talks Uma Thurman, serial killers and Cannes at first press conference since Nazi row
Set report: director and cast discuss Us-set drama The House That Jack Built during Tuesday 7 March press event.
”I chose Matt and I chose Uma because they obviously can’t read,” Lars von Trier says with the hint of a smile.
The Danish director is sitting in a village hall a few kilometres outside the town of Bengtfors in a snow-covered part of Sweden which is standing in for the state of Washington, where his next film, the serial killer-drama The House That Jack Built, is set.
Von Trier is flanked by Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, two of the main actors in the film, and two of his producers, Louise Vesth from Zentropa and Madeleine Ekman, and they are faced by a large group of journalists, mostly from Scandinavia and some from the rest of Europe.
He continues: ”There were so many people we sent the script to, who said they would do anything to work...

The BBC’s grisly new true-life serial killer drama feat. Tim Roth and Samantha Morton sets a foreboding tone in episode one…
This review contains spoilers
‘Reg’ Christie shows his wife Ethel around their drab new London lodgings, through a suffocatingly dark hallway into an overgrown garden that needs “a bit of love and attention, a bit of elbow grease”. They’ll do their own planting, he tells her, if there’s enough light.
There’s hardly any light in Rillington Place, real or figurative. The first episode of this three-part drama based on true-life serial killer John Christie is an exercise in dread. As the hour passes, the walls of that dingy terrace seem to close in on Ethel, played movingly here with dismal vulnerability by Samantha Morton.
Tim Roth is just as strong as the sinisterly restrained Christie, a contained character whose capacity for violence...

Let’s be honest, horror movies never get old!
Serial killers, ghosts, monsters, and zombies, we just can’t get enough. (Is that bad to admit?) Nonetheless, horror movies give a thrill like no other and they have introduced us to some of those most iconic and unforgettable characters in the history of film! As weird as it sounds, we just can’t get sick of the horror these films bring us, and that’s why sequels are the best.
Whether we want to know more of a backstory, or we simply want to see more characters endure absolute horror, sequels to horror films give us just that.
There’s a reason horror movies have so many sequels, it’s because they always deliver! Check out our favourite horror movie sequels below.

How will the summer conclude?
Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 7 darkened things up even more as Amy was kidnapped and used as a sacrifice for the lake demon, something that almost killed her and killed all of the cult. Well, almost all. Unfortunately for Garrett, his father's best friend was the Teacher, and his murderer.
TV Fanatics Allison Nichols, Yana Grebenyuk, and Caralynn Lippo discuss that not-so-shocking reveal and their predictions for the dead end of summer.
The Sheriff was the Teacher? Was anyone surprised or unconvinced?
Allison: It was really, really obvious. I wasn't really surprised. I did like that he got involved in this satanist cult or whatever you want to call it because it provided him power. Being a townie in a small town didn't empower the Sheriff, and the power is what seduced him.
Yana: Nope. For once I was right and I knew it since the moment the episode started.

Director: Andy Palmer. Writers: Ben Begley and Renee Dorian. Cast: Robert Englund, Jere Burns, Scottie Thompson, Matt Angel and Chasty Ballesteros. The Funhouse Massacre is an indie horror feature from director Andy Palmer (Badlands of Kain). Written by Ben Begley and Renee Dorian, this title blends a lot of blood with some comedy, on Halloween night. Serial killers haunt an amusement park. And, a family reunion, created in Hell, offers a decent climax. Meanwhile, a theme involving impersonation is appropriate for the film's Halloween setting, while The Funhouse Massacre manages to create an entertaining horror world. In the story, actor Robert Englund appears as a blood-thirsty warden. He allows a journalist to tour his psychiatric hospital. The hospital pens several serial killers in its walls. While the journalist and warden become better acquainted, six murderers escape their confines. The taxidermist (Clint Howard), the cannibal (E. E. Bell), the dentist charmer, a killing...

"It couldn't be a worse time, because my ears from the flight are bad, and all I had to do today was listen to the minutiae of the movie," he says in the sort of remarkably dry tone that, unique to Gervais,...

Genre: Psychological Thriller
The tagline reads, “The Occult Forces. The Ritual Murder. The Sinister Storms. The Prophetic Dreams. The Last Wave.”
Peter Weir follows up on his critically acclaimed masterpiece Picnic at Hanging Rock with this visually striking and totally engrossing surrealist psychological thriller. Much like Picnic, The Last Wave is built around a mystery that may have a supernatural explanation. And like many Peter Weir movies, The Last Wave explores the conflict between two radically different cultures- in this case, that of Aboriginal Australians and the white Europeans.
It is about a white lawyer, David Burton (Richard Chamberlain), whose seemingly normal life is rattled after he takes on a pro bono legal aid case to defend a group of Aborigines from a murder charge in Sydney. The mystery within the mystery surrounding...
