Revelations: Cast, Release Date, Photos, Trailer, Plot of New Ryu Jun-yeol Movie.

In 2021, Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok invited audiences to the depths of hell with their thriller series Hellbound; with their new film Revelations, they’re diving into a darkness that’s much closer to home.

“Many of the live-action films I’ve worked on deal with surreal themes in fantasy worlds,” director Yeon told Netflix. “But this time, I ruled out fantasy elements as much as possible. I wanted to depict psychological elements that can be found in reality, such as illusions, delusions, and traumas.”

So Yeon and writer Choi Gyu-seok set out to adapt their 2022 comic of the same name, a sprawling story about a pastor who sets out on a perverse mission. “Director Yeon Sang-ho suggested creating a story about faith and beliefs, the themes that have interested him for a long time,” Choi (The Awl) told Netflix. “I was intrigued and thought that...

This Controversial X-Files Motif Was Secretly 1 of the Show's Biggest Successes
Image
Quick Links Scully’s Relationship With Catholicism Is Constantly Mentioned She Also Experiences Very Intense Visions The Concept of Religion Keeps The X-Files Grounded

When The X-Files premiered in 1993, it quickly differentiated itself from other sci-fi shows. Mulder acted as a true conspiracy theorist, while Scully used her feminine intuition to side with logic and science. Yet fans adored their bond and how these contrasting views allowed them to bounce off of each other. As such, this show pioneered a new subsection of sci-fi and explored the nuances of extraterrestrial life on Earth.

While The X-Files remained true to its otherworldly themes and Monster of the Week structure, it also wasn't afraid to open the viewers' eyes to religion. Admittedly, the references were few and far between, but the concept remains integral to the show as well as the characters. Thus, without religion, it could be argued that The X-Files wouldn't have been as impactful.

10 Arts and Culture Favorites From 2024
Image
In a year marked by personal losses as well as national strife, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about time. Strange how hours can feel eternal, days brief and weeks like they are bleeding into each other so that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

I had all that in mind while compiling my favorite arts and culture picks from this year. Some of these works consider time on a personal level, like when you pick up a book and can’t put it down. Others ask how much time we have as a society considering the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. A handful think of time more linearly — offering reflections on the past so we might better understand the future.

Here are some works, in alphabetical order, that rearranged time for me:

Alvin Ailey

Two recent works offer a portrait...

‘A Charlie Brown Festivus’ Is Christmas Cartoon for the Rest of Us
Image
Never pictured Charlie Brown as a younger version of Frank Costanza? Get ready to bask in their mutual holiday misery.

The two blockheads have a lot in common. Charlie Brown detests the overcommercialization of Christmas; Costanza finds tinsel distracting. Both are drawn to aluminum poles. And both have a long list of holiday grievances. “Rats. Nobody sent me a Christmas card today,” grumbles Charlie Brown in the original special. “I almost wish there weren’t a holiday season.”

Complaining about the season is what Costanza’s holiday is all about. “At the Festivus dinner,” he explains, “you gather your family around, and you tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year.”

While A Charlie Brown Festivus is fun, it’s disappointingly short at 33 seconds. Luckily, there are more Charlie Brown Christmas parodies that also deliver the goods.

Funny or Die weighed in with a version...

Landman Season 1 Episode 3 Gets Real About Green Energy and Complicated Relationships
Image
This series is really leaning into the heavy themes, and Landman Season 1 Episode 3, “Hell Has a Front Yard,” doesn’t change that.

It dives deep into the oil industry’s inner workings and our complicated relationship with clean energy, continuing with the personal toll this world takes on everyone connected to it.

In many ways, it’s laying down some real talk about just how reliant we are on petroleum — and the fact that even those pushing for a cleaner future don’t fully grasp what that transition would demand.

(Emerson Miller/Paramount+)

Tommy’s conversation with Rebecca sums this up perfectly.

Tommy doesn’t sugarcoat his take on green energy. He lays out the uncomfortable truth: those 400-foot wind turbines may look like the future, but they’re embedded in the same system they’re meant to replace.

To build, maintain, and eventually dispose of them, you need a lot of diesel and oil,...

The Blue Bloods Phenomenon: Should All Police Procedurals Include Family Storylines?
Image
Blue Bloods only has three episodes left before it leaves the airwaves forever.

This is heartbreaking for a lot of reasons, but the reason that hurts the most is that we’ll lose the family aspect.

The Blue Bloods phenomenon is partially due to its focus on a family of cops rather than just the case of the week. Should more police procedurals follow the trend it set?

(John Paul Filo/CBS) Blue Bloods Was Unique, But Other Procedurals Can Learn From It

Every police procedural has to be a little different from the others or there’s no point to watching all of them.

Blue Bloods’ uniqueness came from How it handled family relationships. A lot of shows have side stories involving the cops’ personal lives, but for Blue Bloods, it was more than that.

Family and work were intertwined in unique ways for this show. For one thing,...

Supernatural: Eric Kripke Personally Instructed Misha Collins to Read a Biblical Book about Angels Wiping Out Humanity for Castiel
Image
Supernatural was a show that Eric Kripke described as not having a lot of its own mythology, hence he preferred the show over the likes of Lost and Heroes. However, that did not stop the writer/director from taking inspiration from real-world belief systems for his work, given that he was dealing with angels, demons, and monsters in Supernatural.

Misha Collins’ Castiel was perhaps as synonymous with Supernatural as the Winchester siblings, being a major pull for the show and the CW. In preparation for the role, Kripke assigned the onscreen Angel some homework, the kind that allowed him to play the character more accurately.

The Correct Order To Watch The Hellraiser Movies
Image
Clive Barker's 1987 film "Hellraiser" has always existed a little off to the side of the usual rogue's gallery of 1980s horror slashers. Its central demon, originally credited as Lead Cenobite (Doug Bradley), is usually mentioned alongside other notorious cinematic serial killers like Michael Myers from the "Halloween" movies, Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" movies, and Freddy Krueger from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies ... but he is not quite the same. The Lead Cenobite, better known as Pinhead, isn't a vicious killer who murders teenagers, but a sex deity, culled from a parallel dimension where physical pain has become indivisible with sexual pleasure. Pinhead will definitely kill you, but he will do so with extreme kink. The nails in his face were placed there as part of an extreme S&m game.

"Hellraiser" began its life as "The Hellbound Heart," Barker's 1986 novella. His film adaptation isn't quite as sexed-up,...

What Longlegs' Revelations 13:1 Bible Verse Really Means
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for Longlegs ahead!

Longlegs features heavy themes of Satanism and occult rituals, with a focus on the Bible verse Revelations 13:1. The verse is crucial to understanding the motivation behind Longlegs' actions and his worship of the Devil. The use of Revelations 13:1 in the movie provides insight into Longlegs' perspective and his belief in his own power.

Osgood Perkins' serial killer horror movie Longlegs deals heavily with Satanism and occult rituals, and one Bible verse in particular, Revelations 13:1, resurfaces multiple times throughout the movie. Longlegs stars Maika Monroe as newly-minted FBI agent Lee Harker, and chronicles her journey to discover and catch Nicolas Cage's Longlegs, a serial killer that has been murdering families for more than 30 years.
