As someone who’s old enough to have seen the likes of “Superbad” and “Youth in Revolt” when they first opened in theaters, it’s hard not to feel a little unstuck in time as I watch millennial teen icon Michael Cera make the gradual transition towards dad roles. I was completely unfazed by the fact that he became a father in real life, but there’s something kind of fourth-dimensional about watching an actor grow up on screen while their most famous characters stay the same age forever. It’s an uncannily vivid illustration of the vertigo we all experience as we get older — how can you be on the brink of 40 when you’re also still 18?
But some things never change, and coming of age in tandem with an actor like Cera reminds you of that too. Yes, “Superbad” is a high school movie about a pair of...

Exclusive: Amidst one of the most creatively fertile periods in his career to date, actor Michael Cera has taken on new agents at CAA.
The in-demand Canadian actor is coming off of a standout role in Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s triumphant live-action take on the Mattel doll for Warner Bros, which has thus far grossed over $1.4B worldwide and seems likely to figure heavily in the awards race to come.
In addition to the highest-grossing film of the year, the fantasy comedy penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has set records as the top-grossing title ever released by Warner Bros, and the highest-grossing film from a solo female director. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Cera portrayed Allan, the lovably awkward best friend of Ken who, unlike the central characters, has no counterpart in his universe.

Exclusive: Gustin Nash, the screenwriter of Amazon Studios’ in-the-works movie Kate Warne, which has Emily Blunt attached to star in the story of the first female Pinkerton Detective, has signed with WME. The agency deal for the scribe comes after Deadline scooped earlier this month that Amazon acquired Nash’s pitch at the end of a six-studio bidding war.
Blunt is also set to produce Kate Warne alongside Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and Kristina Sorensen. Nash is executive producer on the project, an action adventure take on Warne, whose sleuthing skills in a male-dominated field paved the way for women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Nash’s writing credits include 2007’s Charlie Bartlett for MGM which starred Anton Yelchin, Robert Downey Jr and Kat Dennings, and 2009’s Youth In Revolt directed by Miguel Arteta and starring Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Rooney Mara.

Netflix has released the trailer for Yes Day. This is one of the many original movies that the streaming service has coming down the pipeline in 2021. With theaters still not showing much in the way of new material, Netflix is capitalizing by offering its subscribers plenty on that front. In this case, we have a family-friendly comedy starring Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez. They play parents who, instead of saying no to their kids, decide to say yes. To anything. As one might expect, it gets a little hectic.
The trailer opens with several instances where Allison and Carlos, played by Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez, have to tell their kids no, as they are causing small-scale chaos in the household. Fireworks. Explosive messes. It all results in a lot of "no." The couple finds that their children view them as fun killers, which leads them to reminisce about their...

It’s a good thing Brie Larson is at peace with her earlier heartbreaks. In a video she posted on Thursday, the “Captain Marvel” star rattled off all the movies she auditioned for and didn’t get — and it’s quite the list.
Larson broke her list down into movies she auditioned for and then missed out on, as well as movies she made it to the final round for and still didn’t get. And all of these were just from between 2008 and 2009.
“It’s a lot of heartbreak, folks. Here I am, still standing,” she said after running down her list.
Hearing Brie Larson rattle them off rapid-fire is delightful and hilarious, but in case you can’t watch, here’s the full list, including some blockbusters, Oscar-winners, some real stinkers and even a pair of Marvel movies!

Updated, with comment from former President Bill Clinton: Steve Bing, the film financier and philanthropist who backed hit movies from Robert Zemeckis’ The Polar Express and Beowulf to the Rolling Stones concert movie Shine a Light, has died.
According to law enforcement sources, Bing jumped from a Century City building at around 1 p.m. Monday. Following standard protocol, the Los Angeles Police Department would not confirm that the individual in question was Bing. However, the description of the man in his 50s who was found dead on the scene fits that of the producer.
Bing, also an influential political donor, was a real estate tycoon from a family with a rich history. In 2012, he pledged a $30 million legacy gift to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

Ah, women, that misunderstood demographic — what do they want anyway? In its mad and misguided scramble to appeal to female audiences, Hollywood is unsurprisingly seriously lacking inspiration. Gone are the days when a writer could simply give the leading lady a consummate bachelor to reform, throw in a career-making magazine assignment or traumatic brain injury, and let the games begin. These days, the decision-making men know it can’t be all about love, and the trend has shifted to another slightly less insulting but just as generic topic: Female friendship. While this worked for genuinely funny hits like “Bridesmaids” and “Girls Trip,” which put comedy front and center, their countless copy-cats, such as “Rough Night,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “The Hustle,” have landed with a thud.

Like A Boss would have been unwatchable with lesser talent. The film spoon feeds its girl power message until your cheeks want to explode. The plot offers zero surprises. But Haddish and Byrne spin the vulgarity and raunchiness into likeability. Like A Boss is successful in its portrayal of true friendship. The actresses light up the screen with great humor.
Mel (Rose Byrne) and Mia (Tiffany Haddish) have been inseparable since middle school. The brash and creative Mia is tempered by the thoughtful and caring Mel. The besties own a custom make-up boutique in Atlanta. They are beloved by their customers and loyal employees, but the business is failing badly. Mel doesn't have the courage to tell Mia that they're broke and in debt.

Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” producer David Permut has acquired the motion picture rights to Joel Dobson’s nuclear bomb thriller “The Goldsboro Broken Arrow.”
Dobson’s book follows the formerly classified events that took place in 1961 when four pilots ejected out of a B-52 aircraft carrying two thermonuclear bombs at 9,000 feet after the plane was struck multiple times by lightning and lost a wing. One pilot died, three others survived, and the two nuclear bombs fell at a velocity of 700 mph and crashed into Goldsboro, N.C.
The condition of the fail-safe mechanism on the bombs was unknown, and there was no guarantee that they could be deactivated. The destructive power of each bomb was large enough to create a 100% kill zone within a radius of eight miles. Twenty-two-year-old Lt. Jack ReVelle, a bomb disposal expert, was charged with the dangerous mission of deactivating the bombs.

“Superbad” costars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera reunited for an interview featured in Hill’s limited edition zine “Inner Children,” released in conjunction with A24. The indie distributor is behind the release of Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” and asked the writer-director to interview a handful of celebrities he admires most, including Cera, Edie Falco, skateboarder Mark Gonzalez, and more. Vulture published an excerpt from Hill’s interview with Cera, which includes Cera’s unenthusiastic outlook on his “Superbad” days.
“If I think back to myself in my teenage years, it’s alarming,” Cera said. “I have this footage of us from the ‘Superbad’ press tour and even watching that and looking at myself when I was like 19, it’s really disturbing.”
Hill praised Cera for making the decision with his career to go down a quieter path when things got too hectic following “Superbad.” Throughout his twenties, Cera made...

It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. It's possible that Felicity Jones may be offered the role if these scheduling conflicts can't be worked out, but that has yet to be confirmed. 24-year-old German filmmaker Helene Hegemann might be a little obsessed with her own life, the blissed-out teenage years of drugs, sex, night club escapades, strung-out mornings and all forms of her cathartic excess. Yet the writer/director is also a little fixated on magical beasts; a unicorn here, some llamas there, a cute little waddling penguin appearing out of nowhere and of course, the strange little axolotl.
The central metaphor of “Axolotl Overkill” is a little too on the nose, or perhaps too on the tail of the weird, translucent-looking creature.

Written by Danny Cannon
Directed by Tj Scott
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
Gotham enters a new arc as Theo Galavan begins to implement phase two of his plan to seize control of the City. The first part of his plan was to bestow chaos by unleashing the Maniax and his next move involves making himself appear as a hero to win the hearts and minds of the citizens. The extent of this plan was accomplished with the surprising twist in last week’s “The Last Laugh”, which also disposed of one of the show’s most interesting villains. This turn has reaped rewards for Galavan, as well as created a new shift in the direction of the season.
Galavan’s staged heroism has won him a candidacy for the Mayor’s office which will give passage for the next phase of his evil plan.

Based on the Ya novel by Jennifer Niven, who will also write the script, the story follows the bond formed between the wide-eyed Violet and the suicidal Theodore, in what sounds like a story where you'll need to keep the Kleenex handy. Here's the book synopsis: Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops.

Alternating between indie-circuit hits (Young Ones) and blockbuster hits (Maleficent), Elle Fanning has worked steadily to emerge out of older sister Dakota’s Hollywood shadow, and she’ll be aiming squarely for the hearts and minds of the Ya crowd in upcoming project All the Bright Places. This morning, producers have announced that Fanning will team with Youth in Revolt director Miguel Arteta for the pic, an adaptation of Jennifer Niven’s novel.
Fanning has been attached to the lead role of Violet since last year. Niven herself is penning the script for the adaptation, which is a priority for financiers Demarest Media and Mazur/Kaplan.
Said Arteta:
“Violet and Finch’s achingly heartfelt and authentic story is the most convincing portrayal of teenage life I have ever come across. It’s such a privilege to bring it to the screen with the help of its engaging author and the...

A dark, loud, found footage horror film set in a Barcelona apartment block at night. No, not that one – with not a fireman in sight, on a lads’ holiday following a bad breakup, two awful young Americans hook up with girls in a bar and retire to a creepy old apartment block for sex. It’s all fun and games until someone ends up bleeding from the balls.
A film which starts out with one of its characters vomiting into a toilet for a good five minutes, Hooked Up is resolutely hard to like. Its two leads are a terrible pair, one being a borderline rapist, the other a violent creep who struggles to hold his booze and makes far too many hand gestures when he gets stressed. Tonio acts like Jay from The Inbetweeners...

Youth in Revolt: Betzer’s Inexplicable Road Movie an Assortment of Prominent Instances
Director Andrew T. Betzer manages to concoct an impressively pronounced feature debut with the eerily titled Young Bodies Heal Quickly. Basically a meandering road movie about two brothers on the lam, their journey churns from magnetic portrayal of familial discord into disjointed episodes of increasingly surreal occurrences. Though Betzer’s refusal to adhere to any kind of cohesive narrative for his youthful protagonists eventually dampens the effectiveness of the film as it stumbles into its ambiguous finale, the film manages to be intriguing and unpredictable as a balancing act that is sometimes funny, observational, and even foreboding.
If their bodies heal quickly, we’re never certain of their psychological states, though both Older (Gabriel Croft) and Younger (Hale Lytle) may as well represent developmental, identity-less stages or echoes of inevitability (the figure known as Dad could...
