The replica of the Dutch VOC ship Batavia (docked at the Batavia Wharf at Lelystad) doubled for Bontekoe's ship the Nieuw Hoorn in some scenes. In real life, both ship were built only 9 years apart in the 17th century, and looked very much alike.
The film was made for about EUR 5 million ($5.44 million). By comparison: Le nouveau monde (2005) cost about $30 million to make.
