Sony Pictures Imageworks is to provide the animation on “Over the Moon,” the Chinese-themed animated feature stemming from China’s Pearl Studio and Netflix. The film is being directed by Glen Keane, who has numerous credits on Pocahontas, Tarzan and Beauty and the Beast, and won an Oscar as director of short film “Dear Basketball.”

The musical adventure story in “Over the Moon” involves a girl who builds a rocket ship and blasts off to the moon in hopes of meeting a Moon Goddess. When she gets to the other side she unexpectedly discovers a whimsical world filled with fantastical creatures.

Pearl Studio, which was previously U.S.-China joint venture company Oriental Dreamworks and is now wholly-owned by a Cmc Capital Partners-led consortium, will give the film a theatrical release in China in 2020. Cranked Up Films has partnered with AMC Network’s streaming platform Shudder to buy North American distribution rights to Cinelou Films’ “Nightmare Cinema” anthology, Variety has learned exclusively.

The film is comprised of five shorts and a wrap-around storyline from directors Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Ryuhei Kitamura and Alejandro Brugues in which five unlucky individuals are trapped and tortured by a mysterious projectionist as he plays each of their greatest fears on the theater’s silver screen.

Veteran studio executive Kristin Lowe was promoted to executive vice president of production at Universal Pictures, the studio announced on Wednesday.

Lowe started at Universal in 2004 and most recently served as senior vice president of production. In her new role she will continue to report to the studio’s president of production Peter Cramer.

During her time at the studio, Lowe has worked on numerous blockbusters, including all three installments in the “Fifty Shades” series, which have earned more than $1 billion at the box office worldwide. DreamWorks Animation is in final negotiations for the movie rights to Jerry Hawthorne’s board game “Mice and Mystics,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Alexandre Aja attached to direct and co-write the script with “Aquaman” scribe David Leslie Johnson. Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Jon Berg are producing.

“Mice and Mystics” is a role-playing game in which players are loyal to the king –- but to escape the clutches of the evil Vanestra, they have been turned into mice imprisoned in a seaside castle. They face countless adversaries such as rats, cockroaches, and spiders, and the castle’s house cat, Brodie.

Lee founded Vertigo with Doug Davison in 2002. To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.

Best known for his 2006 debut feature, Abominable, Ryan Schifrin wrote and directed “The Ransom of Rusty Rex,” his segment of Tales of Halloween in which two kidnapping thieves get more than they bargained for on their latest job. Schifrin (whose legendary father, composer Lalo Schifrin, contributes a wonderful theme for the anthology), spoke with Daily Dead about working with one his heroes, finding the right tone and his segment’s classical literary roots.

The Screamfest Horror Film Festival is the longest running horror film festival in the United States, now in its 15th year. The festival has been responsible for premiering many now classic horror films such as Paranormal Activity and Feast, both of which are having anniversary screenings at this year's festival. Additionally, Screamfest will be screening the premiere of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.

The 2015 festival will run from October 13th through the 22nd in Hollywood, California at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theatres.

Anthology horror films are a tricky beast. The rule of thumb is, usually only half of the segments are generally satisfying while the remainder leave a lot to be desired (save for the few successes such as Asylum, Creepshow, and Trick ‘r Treat). Every year, crackling bonfires, a steaming witch’s brew, and the crunch of dead leaves come together for a creepy Halloween night concoction that makes one feel like anything could happen. Michael Dougherty’s 2007 anthology film Trick ’r Treat certainly embraced the magic of this night and now a group of directors collectively called The October Society have begun development on Tales of Halloween.

Take two of why I wanted to write about Bigfoot: Bigfoot has an uncommon amount of myth malleability.

This is related, of course, to his unknowability; the strokes of his mythology are broad and vague, so he can be made and molded to slip into essentially any story vaguely set neat a forest. There are very few parameters that must be set and even fewer rules that must be abided by or addressed in order for that character to work successfully in a piece of art. Certainly, as before, many monsters can be said to exhibit aspects of this elasticity, but again Bigfoot finds his unknowability to be crucial to his difference and uniqueness. Bigfoot exists essentially without context. His being is not defined, and as such he exhibits no strong predilection or resistance to changes. An empty vessel never overflows when water is placed inside, and it has no reaction to substances it holds.

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Now that American Horror Story: Asylum has come to an end, concept designer Jerad S. Marantz has shared several pieces of art for Bloody Face, the show's aliens, Pepper the Pinhead and Dr. Arden's experiments.  This is the first time you actually get a good look at the alien design.

Marant cooked up these concepts for makeup FX artist Christian Tinsley whose credits include Nip/Tuck, Abominable and I Am Legend.

Marantz writes via his blog, "Coming up with the look and feel of these characters is a collaborative effort and I love how the project pushes Design further every year. Asylum took a lot of work, much more than season one. There was so much to do and it was a lot of fun."

What has Ryan Schifrin been up to since Abominable and his comic book series "Spooks"? No Rest for the Wicked , a short film that he hopes will expand into a feature project. The short features the likes of Zachary Levi ( Chuck ), Ray Park ( Star Wars: The Phantom Menace ) and Malcolm McDowell. Schifrin passed along this trailer which blends action and the supernatural. My biggest pet peeve with film critics is a majority of them review horror films through the same glasses with which they review Oscar contenders. They stand films like The Descent and Piranha 3D up against No Country for Old Men and The Social Network and declare them inadequate rather than do the logical thing, which is to compare them against fruit of the same origin (i.e., how does Piranha 3D stack up against other successful horror films?). Movies about bigfoot — or sasquatch, if you’re nasty — are a tough sell these days. Nobody has been able to top Ryan Schifrin’s thoroughly enjoyable romp “Abominable” since its release over four years ago, and those who tried were, shall we say, less than successful in their endeavors. Writer/director Wes Sullivan’s “Nightbeasts” is yet another contender for the “Best Bigfoot Movie of All Time” award, a film that comes pre-packaged with genre veteran Zach Galligan. I’m not saying that Galligan’s presence somehow strengths the film’s chances of winning me over, but it certainly doesn’t hurt matters any. What’s more, the picture features my personal Lord and Savior Lloyd Kaufman as a park ranger. Color me very interested. 2010 has been a little light on the horror scene thus far, but 2011 is shaping up quite nicely. Dead of Night Films just sent out a press release for its upcoming film Hallow Pointe, which features a genre heavy cast (including myself) and some teaser art! Dig it!
