Charlize Theron in Æon Flux (2005)

News

Æon Flux

Charlize Theron Was Heartbroken For Not Getting A Role In This Movie Despite Making The Character Iconic
Image
Charlize Theron Was Disheartened For Missing This Movie (Photo Credit –Instagram)

Charlize Theron, over the years, not only proved her worth as a talented actress but also showed how competent she can be as an action star. Despite disappointing the audience with her first action movie Æon Flux in 2005, she featured in three more action movies and proved that she can do intense scenes with a few punches and kicks in them. She appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and The Old Guard.

Mad Max: Fury Road gave her a second chance at breaking into an action role. Even though it gave her a huge recognition, the director didn’t choose her to be in the prequel of the movie. It left her disheartened, and she also regretted it a bit. In an interview, she talked about it, so scroll ahead and find out what she once said...

Charlize Theron Slams The Way Hollywood Treats Female Action Stars
Image
Charlize Theron, the action star of films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard, recently slammed the Hollywood industry for its terrible treatment of female actors trying to make it big in the action genre. Though Theron's catalog is anything but small, she revealed that the journey has taught her a thing or two about how women don't always get a second chance if their project doesn't work. Despite not naming any names, Theron's statement is damning but extremely relatable.

The Academy Award-winning actor spoke to The New York Times in an interview that also included Uma Thurman, her co-star in The Old Guard 2, Theron's latest action movie released by Netflix. Thurman's experience in action is not as long as Theron's and Kill Bill remains her most prominent work in the genre: "It was such an extraordinary experience, and with such a great director.

Charlize Theron Says It ‘Frustrates Me’ That Hollywood Takes Risks on Men Who Flop at the Box Office but ‘Women Don’t Get a Chance Again’: ‘Guys Get a Free Ride’
Image
Charlize Theron recently spoke to The New York Times and called out a Hollywood double standard when it comes to action movies. The Oscar winner, who has been fronting action movies since 2005’s “Æon Flux,” said studios often give female actors just one shot to have an action movie hit. When it comes to men, however, they can have a box office flop but still land multiple follow-up projects.

“Yeah, it’s harder. That’s known,” Theron said when asked about gender disparity in the action genre. “Action films with female leads don’t get greenlit as much as the ones with male leads. I think the thing that always frustrates me is the fact that guys will get a free ride.”

“When women do this and the movie maybe doesn’t hit fully, they don’t necessarily get a chance again,” she continued. “With this, we were very aware that eyes were on us.

The Old Guard 2 Pulled the Same Move That Burned Charlize Theron 20 Years Ago
Image
Charlize Theron has had a complicated career. Although she has been in several successful and notable films, she has a tendency to pick some questionable projects. 20 years ago, she did this by starring in Æon Flux. However, she seemingly hasn’t learned her lessons.

Having most recently starred in The Old Guard 2, the actress is finding herself in a similar position to the one she was in in 2005. With this, here are some evident lessons she could have learned from Æon Flux that could have saved her the embarrassment she is facing now.

Æon Flux Failed for Many Reasons

When Æon Flux was first released, it had fans who were looking forward to it. Being based on the classic sci-fi animated series of the same name, it is safe to say that fans had expectations. However, soon after the film came out, it was evident that it was not even close to meeting them,...

A Beloved Animated MTV Sci-Fi Series Led To A Live-Action Flop Starring Charlize Theron
Image
Once upon a time, MTV stood for Music Television and played nothing but music videos around the clock. At a time when 24-hour programming in any form was still novel, there was something comforting about being able to switch on the tube at 3am and watch a Split Enz video. MTV was the only channel within the rapidly expanding cable expanse offering this then-novel service, so no one was clamoring for it to air, say, reruns of "The Monkees."

When MTV became a pop cultural phenomenon, the company got ambitious and began trying out non-music-video programming. In 1985, they really did begin airing reruns of "The Monkees," but that same year they also brought the brilliant BBC punk-rock sitcom "The Young Ones" to American viewers. They eventually got into original programming in 1987 with the game show "Remote Control," which introduced Gen X-ers to comedic talents like Ken Ober, Colin Quinn, and...

MTV's Intense Animated '90s Anti-Superhero Series Was An Antidote To Modern Tropes
Image
The early 1990s were an exciting time for animation. Throughout the 1980s, mainstream commercial cartoons had become, well, commercials, Many of them were owned by toy companies and only put into production to advertise toy products. New cartoon shows wouldn't be greenlit unless they possessed "marquee value," which is to say they were "established IPs" (to use the modern lingo).

This over-commercialization deeply branded a generation, but caused storytelling to suffer. Certain animators sick of the Reagan era began to branch out in the '90s, and the world experienced a sudden explosion of creativity. Animators like John Kricfalusi (whose achievements and gross misconduct alike are chronicled in the documentary "Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story") and Mike Judge began animating aggressively crude, playfully subversive shows like "The Ren & Stimpy Show" and "Beavis and Butt-head," respectively. Elsewhere, animation exhibitors Spike & Mike began touring theaters with both classic...

Karyn Kusama's Follow Up to 'Jennifer's Body' Is a Masterpiece
Image
Karyn Kusama has charted a unique course throughout her 20-plus-year career in the movie business. Her 2000 debut Girlfight was an indie hit, giving her the chance to tackle big-budget sci-fi spectacle in 2005's Æon Flux. That movie flopped with critics and at the box office, and her next project, 2009's Jennifer's Body, didn't do a whole lot better. Luckily, time has been kinder to Jennifer's Body, which has gone on to be considered an underrated feminist horror classic in the intervening years.

Six years after Jennifer's Body's initially poor reception, Kusama returned to the big screen with a very different project: 2015's The Invitation. A small-scale, claustrophobic thriller, the film premiered at SXSW on March 13th, 2015, and went on to earn strong reviews for its masterful use of slow-burn tension. 10 years after its premiere, its esteem has only grown, and it regularly shows up on lists of the best...

Los Frikis Review: an eye-opening mosh pit of a film!
Image
Last Updated on January 2, 2025

Plot: Inspired by actual events, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, where a group of punk rockers, in search of freedom, deliberately inject HIV to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia.

Review: In 1991, when I was ten years old, I spent most of my days listening to Nirvana’s Nevermind on repeat, riding my BMX through local dirt trails, and recording episodes of MTV’s Liquid Television on VHS, hoping to catch another chapter of Peter Chung’s Æon Flux. All things considered, it was a breezy way for an American adolescent to grow up. Little did I know that people were suffering in other parts of the world, like Cuba, where a Marxist–Leninist politician named Fidel Castro pressed his tar and nicotine-covered thumb upon the necks of his people. How could I...

One Of Tim Burton's Best Movies Has An Unexpected Connection To Fox's Bones
Image
The popular 2005 police procedural series "Bones" is full of murder, gore, desiccated corpses, and ... bones. Most episodes begin with the two main characters, "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), coming across a corpse, often discovered in an unusual or disturbing death pose. The two agents, backed up by a team of passionate pathologists, will then reverse-engineer the circumstances of the corpse's death and determine the depth of foul play involved. There was typically a great deal of foul play involved.

Like other violent shows about death, murder, and corpses, "Bones" was ideal comfort viewing. Despite all the blood, violence, and misery, "Bones" often skewed tonally light, usually involving eccentric side characters and flippant gallows quips. Also, Bones and Brennan typically solved the mysteries of the rotten cadavers, displaying a police investigative system that worked as perfectly as it was designed to.

In order for the jokes to work,...

“We don’t think it’s time to do the movie”: Lionsgate Knew Black Widow Would be a Disaster after a $53M Charlize Theron Bomb Gave Them a Rude Awakening
Image
Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow became an instant hit among fans after her introduction in 2010’s Iron Man 2. The superheroine was a prominent player in the MCU till 2021’s Black Widow, which was a prequel film and a tribute to her character after she died in Avengers: Endgame. However, the film’s reception proved that it was a bit too late for a movie on her.

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 | Marvel Studios

For a very long time, Marvel fans wanted to see a project on Natasha Romanoff. She was the only female superhero in the team before we got others like Captain Marvel and Wasp after many years. But Lionsgate planned a Black Widow movie in 2004, even before the start of the MCU, if some underwhelming female-led films had not intervened.

What led Lionsgate to scrap their planned Black Widow project?

How Cartoon Network's Space Ghost Coast To Coast Made History
Image
To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."

In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).

Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

“I had another surgery to put a metal screw”: Charlize Theron’s Intensive Training for John Wick Director Went So Hard it Left a Lasting Damage on Her Body
Image
Charlize Theron proved to be a fine action star appearing in Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and several other remarkable action-packed films. But doing action movies is not always easy, and Theron has endured the nightmarish effects of it on her body and mind.

Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde

Still, there is no stopping for the actor. She puts herself up to every challenge possible despite the inherent cons attached to it. On-set injuries are not new to the actor as she was almost paralyzed after a neck injury after filming a scene in the 2005 Karyn Kusama-directed sci-fi action flick, Æon Flux. But she sustained permanent damage to her body after working in a film by the John Wick director.

Why It Took Over A Decade For Black Widow To Get Her Own MCU Movie
Image
Black Widow's track record in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't always been flawless. The highs ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier") were certainly high, but the lows ("Avengers: Age of Ultron") were just as low. Still, the operative otherwise known as Natasha Romanoff was always the McU's secret weapon. She practically ran away with every film she appeared in, and for a large part of the franchise's initial run, she was one of the few female characters making a consistent impact. But as Johansson continued to turn in solid supporting performances, it was hard to ignore the fact that she'd yet to get a chance to stand on her own.

By the time Marvel finally delivered a solo Black Widow project, it felt like way too little, too late. "Black Widow" found itself somewhere in the middle of the franchise's 15-year output: it did its title character justice, in a way,...

Bones Shares An Intriguing Creative Connection With A Nightmare On Elm Street
Image
Imagine if you will a line of dominoes that increase in size as they move left to right. A man stands behind the smallest domino, poised to knock it forward, which will instigate a chain reaction leading to the largest domino toppling over. This "domino theory" illustration helps to visualize the causal interconnection between a seemingly innocuous event in the past and a monumental event in the present or near future. It's especially handy when attempting to understand how 20th Century Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck's mother getting a cold in 1908 led indirectly to the creation and broad success of the comedy procedural series "Bones" in 2005. And not because "Bones" was a Fox show. The connection is much more serpentine and intriguing.

You see, when the Wahoo, Wisconsin-born Sarah Louise Zanuck caught a hard-to-shake chill in the latter years of the 20th century's first decade, she thought it'd...

Sci-Fi Roles That Made Actors Physically Ill
Image
How much sympathy do average working people have for Hollywood actors? Not much, I suspect. Fancy trailers, high-end catering, and eye-watering salaries are not the hallmarks of a tough gig. However, it's not all luxury and dollar signs, especially in the extravagant science fiction genre. On-set accidents have injured performers such as Charlize Theron, who was nearly paralyzed while making "Æon Flux," and Carrie-Ann Moss, whose botched cartwheel in "The Matrix" caused a nasty ankle injury

Such incidents remind us of why stunt people are needed to protect a production's cast and crew from accidents and injuries. But what about the threat of illness? Who is responsible for that and what danger does it pose to a multi-million dollar project with a tight schedule and a tighter budget? Well, a lesser danger than injury, it seems, but there is still a precedent for actorly illnesses -- and the causes range...

Live-Action Aeon Flux Reboot Show Update Shared By Teen Wolf Boss
Image
Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis shares an update on the long-stagnating Aeon Flux reboot. Created by animator Peter Chung, Aeon Flux is a popular animated sci-fi series that originally aired on MTV between 1991 and 1995. In 2005, a live-action feature film adaptation starring Charlize Theron was released with a tie-in video game, but came under fire for taking significant liberties with the source material. A new live-action reboot series was first announced in 2018; it was later revealed to be moving to Paramount+ in 2021 with Davis serving as the showrunner.

Now Davis, who recently headed up the new Paramount+ supernatural teen drama Wolf Pack, has spoken to SciFi Pulse and provided an update on the progress of his Aeon Flux series. Revealing that it is the next project on his roster, the showrunner's comments are rather promising. Davis said:

The next project is Æon Flux, an adaptation of the MTV anime series by Peter Chung.

Here’s What’s Leaving HBO Max in March 2023
James Gunn
A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).

You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”

Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Dangerous Sci-Fi Stunts The Actors Actually Performed
Image
There's every reason in the world for an actor to not do their own stunts. Stunt performers make up an entire sub-industry in the filmmaking world. It's simple enough to find a stunt person whose physicality matches the actor's, allowing them to serve as the celebrity's double without making the audience bat an eye. On top of that, the inherently dangerous nature of stunt work isn't just a liability to the production, but a risk to the performer's safety. Why not leave it to the professionals?

Because stunts come with serious street cred, that's why. Okay, so the actual reasoning might be a bit more nuanced. The different explanations for why an actor might want to perform their own stunts are as varied as the stunts themselves. Whether they're jumping out of a building or being lifted off 80 feet into the air, each actor has their own motivations for putting themselves in danger.

HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Cool Stuff: The Aeon Flux Animated Series Is Getting A Vinyl Soundtrack Box Set
Image
"Æon Flux" might not be as well-remembered as its contemporary "Neon Genesis Evangelion," and the 2005 live-action movie adaptation starring Charlize Theron is remembered perhaps even less, but Peter Chung's animated sci-fi series still holds a special place in the heart of many. Now, "Æon Flux" fans have a new opportunity to return to the '90s by taking a sound bath in composer Drew Neumann's remastered soundtrack for the show.

Waxwork Records is releasing the complete "Æon Flux" Original Series Soundtrack Box Set, marking the first time that the soundtrack has been officially available in any format. To make up for lost time, there are three different ways of listening: a deluxe box set comprised of six vinyl LPs, priced at 195; a multi-disc CD set, priced at 35; and for those of you who reject physical media entirely, it's also available across all digital streaming services. Aeon Flux Reboot: Jeff Davis Says People Will Come For Me With Pitchforks
Image
If there is one thing television reboots, revivals, and adaptations all have in common, it’s that they are all far from easy to execute. Any classic that has developed a legion of loyal followers becomes sacred ground to these custodians which often makes any fresh territory a no-go for many creators. That is the exact notion Jeff Davis is acutely aware of going into his reboot of the legendary sci-fi series Æon Flux. The Peter Chung animated epic, which aired on MTV from 1991 until 1995, chronicled the story of a secret agent navigating a dystopian future where the world is in a state of turmoil.

Bill Plympton's I Married A Strange Person! Is A Glorious, Grotesque, And Gutsy Display Of Alternative Animation
Image
(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "I Married a Strange Person!")

In the 1990s, MTV ran an animated showcase called "Liquid Television," which was a groundbreaking collection of early computer-animated shorts, highly-influential hand-drawn shorts, and was the launchpad for several high-profile originals, like Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "Æon Flux." MTV snagged some of the most adventurous and experimental shorts from seasoned animators and designers of the era, including Charles Burns, Richard Sala, David Daniels, and Bill Plympton.

The latter was behind the 1987 Academy Awards-nominated short, "Your Face," which featured a man singing about the face of his love, as his own face begins to distort into increasingly unusual positions. He would go on to direct the animated musical feature, "The Tune," which was self-funded and incorporated footage from his shorts "The Wiseman,...

Charlize Theron Joined Arrested Development Because Of One Major Flop
Image
Charlize Theron says she joined Arrested Development because she knew one of her upcoming movies was going to flop. Theron played Rita Leeds on the Fox sitcom, appearing in five episodes during Arrested Development season 3. Rita was briefly the love interest of Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), and the two were even engaged. When the character is initially introduced, it's believed that she could be a British spy. Though her involvement in the show is small overall, Theron was one of several big names to pop up on the acclaimed series, with others including Liza Minnelli, Ben Stiller, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

In an interview with THR, Theron reflects on her time on Arrested Development. The Oscar-winning actor discusses the fact that she felt intimidated about appearing on a show that was so accomplished. She also talks about her reasons for taking on the role, wanting to do something lighter after so many serious projects,...

Charlize Theron Says She Joined ‘Arrested Development’ To Save Her Career After ‘Aeon Flux’ Flopped
Image
Remember “Aeon Flux“? No? Don’t worry, nobody does, and star Charlize Theron and director Karyn Kusama still try to forget it. Critics hated the action flick on its release in 2005, with it currently holding a 9 rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It didn’t make back its budget at the box office either, taking in only 52 million on a 62 million budget. In a word, yikes.

And according to Theron, she knew she and Kusama had a bomb on their hands from the start, and that’s why she quickly joined the cast of “Arrested Development” soon afterward.

Charlize Theron Admits She Joined ‘Arrested Development’ to Save Her Career
Charlize Theron
In a new interview, Charlize Theron is opening up about why back in the day, as a newly-minted Oscar winner, she did something most others would never do (at the time) — join a comedy TV series. After winning the Academy Award for Monster in 2004, the actress admits she knew her next movie, Aeon Flux, was going to be a career killer. She could tell during shooting that things were not going well, but she didn’t have the know-how to help fix the issues. So she needed something else on her resume to divert attention away, which made it an easy decision to take on the role of Michael Bluth’s (Jason Bateman) love interest in the 2005-2006 season of Arrested Development. Theron tells The Hollywood Reporter, “I just f***ing loved [Arrested Development], and this is going to sound so ‘poor me,’ but I do feel like sometimes, as women,...

Charlize Theron Celebrates Next Wave of Women “Tearing Down the Building,” Accepts Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at THR’s Women in Entertainment Event

Charlize Theron used her time accepting the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Women in Entertainment event presented by Lifetime to recognize the women who have supported and inspired her, including the next generation of female leaders.

Seth Rogen introduced his Long Shot co-star with a joke-filled speech, riffing on the quiche being served at the event (“these women deserve a better breakfast, I’m just going to say it”) and calling out scheduled presenter Kim Kardashian for not attending: “I have seen every episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I know she’s not doing something more important than this.”

Shifting to Theron, Rogen recalled feeling “incredibly intimidated to work with her, not just because of how talented she is.”

But, Rogen said of the action star, “I was literally physically intimidated to be around her, because...

Aeon Flux: Charlize Theron knew the MTV adaptation would bomb and quickly plotted a recovery
Image
Insomniacs of the MTV Generation will have no trouble remembering the network’s late-night animated anthology show Liquid Television. Home to various animated shorts, Stick Figure Theater, Dog-Boy, and the antics of Office Space‘s Milton Waddams, the Heavy Metal-like series also featured Aeon Flux, a sexy science-fiction story with a radical approach to action and intrigue. In 2005, Paramount Pictures pooped out a dreadful adaptation of Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Marton Csokas, Johnny Lee Miller, and more. Directed by Karyn Kusama, the movie was panned by critics, flopped at the box office, and Theron knew the project was doomed to fail before it hit theaters.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron waxed rhapsodic about how appearing on Arrested Development helped save her career after starring in Aeon Flux. “It was one of the scariest things, to walk onto a set of a show that’s so developed and so brilliant.

What If Marvel Made Black Widow Before The MCU
Image
Thanks to a scrapped movie script, it's possible that a Black Widow movie could have debuted before Scarlett Johansson and the MCU popularized the character. Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before Iron Man launched the MCU and changed superhero movies forever, the collection of superheroes were scattered among studios. Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, was owned by Lionsgate, and they came very close to making their own Black Widow film long before the MCU was even a concept.

Black Widow was released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021, around twenty years after a solo movie starring the character was first in the works. The movie's release coming after Natasha's death in Avengers: Endgame and over ten years after her original MCU debut led to a film that couldn't fulfill many expectations. Add to this the fact that its release was delayed several times due to Covid-19 -...

Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Lady Gaga, and Adam Driver in House of Gucci (2021)
Here’s What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in July 2022
Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Lady Gaga, and Adam Driver in House of Gucci (2021)
Amazon Prime Video is ringing in the month of July with a smorgasbord of new titles, from “House of Gucci” (previously available to purchase or rent on Amazon Prime Video) to classic films like “Clueless,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Yentl.” Apart from the Lady Gaga-starring crime drama, which becomes available to stream on July 2, most other titles will join the platform on July 1.

The streamer is also debuting a handful of Amazon originals this month. The comic book series adaptation “Paper Girls” will hit the streamer at the very end of the month. “Warriors on the Field,” a documentary about Indigenous players in the Australian Football League, premieres July 8. Indie drama “Don’t Make Me Go” and coming-of-age series “Forever Summer: Hamptons” debut July 15, followed by the Billy Porter-directed “Anything’s Possible” and the boxing feature “Prizefighter” on July 22.

There are also several titles coming to Freevee – previously known as IMDbTV – in July,...

Chris Pratt in The Terminal List (2022)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: July 2022
Chris Pratt in The Terminal List (2022)
Two is the magic number when it comes to Prime Video’s list of new releases for July 2022. While Amazon’s streamer is bringing many library titles to the mix this month, it has two original TV shows and two original movies of note.

Prime Video kicks off the month with The Terminal List on July 1. Though everything about that name screams “Movie” to me for some reason, the Chris Pratt-starring action property is actually a series. Pratt will portray James Reece, a Navy Seal who returns home after his team is ambushed on a covert mission only to discover that the threat might still persist. Then Prime Video closes out the month with Paper Girls on July 29. This adaptation of a Brian K. Vaughan comic is a sci-fi yarn about a group of young paper delivery girls confronting a temporal anomaly.

Over on the movie side of things,...

The ‘Old Guard 2’: Uma Thurman & Henry Golding Join Charlize Theron In The Sequel
Image
The versatile Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron has done her share of prestige dramas, studio comedies, and offbeat indies. But she might be best known for her action movies. 2005’s “Æon Flux” didn’t quite grab hold at the time, but it led eventually to the epic “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Since then, Theron’s Liam Neeson-esque pivot to action has been solidified with roles in “Atomic Blond” and “Fate Of The Furious.”

How Jennifer's Body Became A True Cult Classic
Karyn Kusama
It's been over a decade since the planets aligned and Karyn Kusama, Diablo Cody, Megan Fox, and Amanda Seyfried joined forces to make the monstrous femme sensation, "Jennifer's Body." Kusama was looking for a new project to revitalize her reputation after "Æon Flux" flopped, and a new script from the recent Academy Award-winning Cody seemed like the perfect fit. Fox was on a hot streak after the "Transformers" films and Seyfriend, determined to shed her "Mean Girls" and "Mama Mia" reputation, was looking for something with a little more bite. In recent years, the film has been hailed as one of the greatest horror movies ever...

Amelia Warner to Compose Score for ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ for Bleecker Street (Exclusive)
Image
In a year that presents the opportunity for new and diverse voices in the awards race, another one has been added to the mix for best original score. Variety has learned exclusively that neo-classical composer Amelia Warner will helm the music for John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan.

Best known for her work on Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” in 2018, Warner has dabbled both in music and acting. With roles in “Quills,” “Aeon Flux” and “Winter Passing,” this film marks just her third film composition. Warner was named the breakthrough composer of the year at the 2019 International Film Music Critics Awards.

While the awards season could present a record-breaking number of women nominated in categories like best picture and director, the race for best original score is very limited for female composers. Warner hopes to break through the male-heavy list of contenders that...

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator (1984)
Hulu New Releases: September 2020
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator (1984)
As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.

The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.

Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.

Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Here is everything else...

Charlize Theron Reveals “Insulting” Requests To Train Six Weeks Longer Than Male Co-Stars In ‘The Italian Job’ During Comic-Con@Home Panel
Image
When it comes to action movies, we are all living in Charlize Theron‘s world. Having made one big impression after the next in films like “Æon Flux,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and most recently, Netflix’s “The Old Guard,” you’d think Theron would be able to get some respect from the higher-ups in Hollywood, but you’d be wrong. Theron revealed that producers of “The Italian Job” remake asked her to do a lot more training than her male co-stars.

Charlize Theron On Evolution Of Female-Led Action Pics, Recalls Motivation After “Insulting” ‘Italian Job’ Experience – Comic-Con@Home
Image
During her Comic-Con@Home appearance Friday, Charlize Theron reflected on the evolution of the modern female action star.”The good news now is that we’ve changed the genre for women,” she said. “We now know you we can’t hide behind ignorance anymore. Audiences love these films. They love how were now telling these narratives with women at the core,”

Talking about her first action role in 2003’s The Italian Job, Theron talked about the “misconception around women” and “unfair process” she experienced.

“The Italian Job was a great experience in the sense that I realized there was still so much misconception around women in the genre,” she said. “There was a very unfair process that went with that. I was the only woman with a bunch of guys, and I remember vividly getting the schedule in our pre-production and they had scheduled me for six weeks more hard...

Charlize Theron Says ‘Italian Job’ Producers Made Her Train Six Weeks Longer Than Male Co-Stars
Image
As part of her extraordinary range, Charlize Theron has cemented herself as one of today’s leading badass women action stars. But almost 15 years before she was outrunning a post-apocalyptic cult army in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” she was forced to prove that women can keep up with the guys to the filmmakers behind “The Italian Job,” she said during a Comic-Con@Home panel Friday.

Before the 2003 film was in production, “I realized there was still so much misconception around women and the genre. Even though in that film the action is really based on on cars, we had to physically do a lot of that stuff,” she said. “There was a real pressure to pull off those stunts with the actors … there was a very unfair process that went with that. I was the only woman with a bunch of guys and I remember vividly getting the schedule in our pre-production,...

Charlize Theron Recalls Sexist Double Standards in The Italian Job and 2000s Hollywood
Charlize Theron
There are few bigger names in the action genre right now than Charlize Theron. An Oscar winner with an eclectic career that’s spanned genres and multiple decades, Theron is the rare dramatic actor who can slip into a role of action hero (or anti-hero) so well that when she originates a character, it often becomes iconic. Just consider how folks still talk about Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road five years later, and why The Old Guard is Netflix’s biggest movie of the summer.

However, this was not always the case. As Theron was quick to point out during her Comic-Con@Home Q&a panel Friday, she wasn’t even able to seize the opportunity of Atomic Blonde (2017)—an action movie she produced and starred solo in—until she was 40. But then her early brush with the genre in the 2000s came during a very different time. Indeed,...
