Many stars got their start in Disney Channel Original Movies and television shows, but some of the former Disney child stars eventually disappeared from Hollywood. Any millennial who grew up watching and loving the Disney Channel will recognize Kay Panabaker. Her breakout role was on The WB's "Summerland," the Aaron Spelling drama about teens being raised by their aunt after the death of their parents.

Although not listed as one of our best Disney Channel shows of the 2000s, she was in season 1 of "Phil of the Future," a quirky sitcom about a teenager from the year 2121 stuck in the year 2004. Kay Panabaker brought her warm energy to the role of Debbie, a sugary sweet girl with preppy clothes and a sunny smile that is also hiding something. The buzz for The Perfect Couple started well before its premiere on Netflix last summer. Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, the series promised lavish drama along with a not-so-perfect family. Set on Nantucket Island, it centers around the wealthy Winburys and the events unfolding during a wedding weekend at their sprawling Summerland estate.

Leading the cast is Nicole Kidman as Greer Garrison Winbury, the formidable matriarch of the family. An internationally famous novelist, Greer effortlessly wields control over her brood. Liev Schreiber co-stars as her husband Tag, who seems charming on the surface but harbors secrets of his own. At the center of the wedding is their middle son Benji, played by Billy Howle, who is marrying Eve Hewson’s character Amelia against Greer’s wishes.

The final episode of The Perfect Couple untangles the murder mystery in as dramatic a fashion as viewers would have expected, digging up some more scandalous secrets, crazy twists, a tirade of red herrings, and the shocking revelation of the identity of the killer of Merritt Monaco. While the ending follows the conventional, least suspected one being the killer trope, it fits in with the causality of the events pretty well, even though the overall execution feels a bit far-fetched and contrived. Depending upon whether you enjoyed the series as an in-your-face satire on the privileged creme de la creme or as a crime drama, it can alter your perception towards The Perfect Couple’s ending.

The Breeders’ Kim Deal has announced her first debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, which arrives on Nov. 22 via 4Ad. The musician has also shared the lead single, “Crystal Breath.”

Kim Deal of The Breeders has announced her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More. It’s due out November 22nd via 4Ad and features the new single, “Crystal Breath.” Stream it below.

The songs on Nobody Loves You More date as far back as 2011, when Deal recorded “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was” after coming off the Pixies’ “Lost Cities Tour.” The most recent recordings for the album were made in November 2022 with the late Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

The Alias and Shining Vale actress wed Los Angeles radio DJ Kevin Ryder on Dec. 31, according to separate posts on Instagram shared by the couple that feature a photo of their wedding ceremony.

In the photo, Dungey is wearing a short, strapless wedding gown with a train and royal blue heels. Ryder is wearing a blue suit (sans tie) with white sneakers.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw will lead the voice cast of the animated short film “To My Daughter.”

The “Surface” star will narrate the movie, which is an adaptation of “This Thread of Gold,” the debut book by actor, writer, filmmaker and Un gender advisor Catherine Joy White.

“This Thread of Gold” is billed as a celebration of Black womanhood, weaving a story about resilience that connects Beyoncé, Nina Simone, Shirley Chisholm and Meghan Markle, as well as those throughout history “who resisted in secret through trusted networks.” The film is described as “part guidebook, part exuberant narrative and part poetry.”

White has adapted one chapter of the book, entitled “Daughter,” which is a letter written to her imagined daughter. Mbatha-Raw will voice the narrator who leads the audience through the film.

Many famous movie stars in Hollywood got their start on TV shows that have long since been forgotten. While television is currently enjoying a critical golden age, the medium has not always been seen as a prestige venue. For decades, television was often viewed as a stepping stone to bigger and better things for emerging actors.

While stars could become A-list household names via a popular TV show, it was broadly accepted that movies were a more glamorous and esteemed path to screen fame. As a result, making the move from TV shows to movies was a big deal for young actors. This is still the case, but critically acclaimed, cinematic television shows like Stranger Things and Game of Thrones mean that many contemporary actors regularly move between television and film. In the 1990s and 2000s, however, moving from television to movie stardom was evidence that an actor’s career was on the rise.

IFC Films is acquiring U.S. rights to “Summerland,” a British drama starring Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Variety has learned exclusively.

The movie is the directorial feature debut from Jessica Swale, who won an Olivier Award for her play “Nell Gwynn,” in which Arterton and Mbatha-Raw both starred. Swale was named as one of Variety’s Brits to Watch in 2019.

IFC Films will release “Summerland” on July 31. In the film, Arterton portrays a fiercely independent folklore investigator who secludes herself in her clifftop study to debunk myths using science to disprove the existence of magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past. When Lucas Bond’s spirited evacuee from the London Blitz is dumped into her irritable care, his innocence and curiosity awaken her buried emotions. “Summerland” also stars Penelope Wilton (“Downton Abbey”) and Tom Courtenay.

IFC has picked up Us rights from Embankment Films to Gemma Arterton Second World War era drama Summerland.

Olivier award-winning theatre director Jessica Swale’s feature directorial debut stars Arterton as a heartbroken debunker of folklore whose life changes when she is charged with looking after a young evacuee from the Blitz in London.

The cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Penelope Wilton, Lucas Bond, and Tom Courtenay. Guy Heeley and Adrian Sturges served as producers.

IFC Films will release Summerland on July 31. The film is a Quickfire and BFI presentation of a Shoebox Films and Iota Films production.

The Turtle sailed through the first quarterfinal of “The Masked Singer” on April 8. He will compete again in the semifinal on April 29. If you can’t wait till then, you can watch a reprise of one of his past performances on the sing-along episode of “The Masked Singer” on April 15. We are promised more clues as to his identity then too but we think we’ve cracked that already.

The schtick o’ the week in Wednesday’s Masked Singer was security — as in, going through metal detectors when getting on planes, having your purse rifled through before entering buildings, etc. The idea was introduced during a cold open that saw the judges getting their bags searched before entering the studio. I know we were supposed to focus on the joke — that everyone but Ken Jeong sailed right in — but all I could think about was: Why did the judges’ paraphernalia stay on the table after they left?

Didn’t Robin Thicke want his hairspray and zillion mirrors? Wouldn’t...

Before last week’s Top 9 showdown, we hadn’t seen the Turtle, one of our favorite contestants on “The Masked Singer,” since mid February. His strong vocals and sense of showmanship on the Steve Winwood song “Higher Love” on the April 1 episode secured him a place in the quarterfinals. In the first of these on April 8, he competes against the Astronaut, Kangaroo and Night Angel. Each is hoping to win over the four judges and the studio audience.

We’re had to wait seven weeks to see the return of one of the best vocalists on season 3 of the “The Masked Singer”: the Turtle. He, along with the other Top 3 in Group A — the Kangaroo and the White Tiger — made the cut back on February 12. On the special two-hour edition of “The Masked Singer” on April 1, they competed along with the best of Group B and Group C.

Each is hoping to win enough votes from the studio audience to stay in the competition and make it to the quarter-finals. Of this Super 9, the Turtle is the one who has most confounded the four judges. We are sure that they are wrong with their guesses that the Turtle is either Jenny McCarthy‘s husband Donnie Wahlberg or his New Kids on the Block bandmate Joey McIntyre.

Lgbtiq+ festival to launch BFI Flare at Home on streaming service BFI Player.

The BFI Flare: London Lgbtiq+ Film Festival is to make a raft of titles and live Q&As available online following its cancellation on Monday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

BFI Flare at Home will host several features and shorts that were due to screen at the festival on BFI Player from March 20-29.

New titles will include Levan Akin’s Cannes award-winner And Then We Danced; Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau’s chamber piece Don’t Look Down; and Daniel Karslake’s documentary For They Know Not What They Do.

The BFI Flare: London Lgbtiq+ Film Festival has become the latest event to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The festival was set to run from March 18-29 and open with the world premiere of Cicada from writer, director and star Matthew Fifer and Kieran Mulcare.

But the impact on international travel as Covid-19 continues to spread around the world has led to organisers shuttering the 2020 edition. In the coming days, organisers are exploring ways to share elements of the event “digitally”, in step with some other festivals.

The BFI Flare: London Lgbtiq+ Film Festival has been canceled days before it was set to launch in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Set to open on Wednesday and run until March 29 at London’s BFI Southbank, BFI Flare is one of the world’s leading Lgbtiq+ festivals. This year’s event was due to present more than 50 features, 85 shorts and a wide range of special events and guest appearances.

The festival was set to open with the world premiere of Matt Fifer and Kieran Mulcare’s feature debut “Cicada,” and to close with the U.K. premiere of theatre director Jessica Swale’s “Summerland,” starring Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The BFI said that it had canceled BFI Flare “with heavy hearts” due to the scale and complexity of running a large international film festival with filmmakers set to travel from across the world as the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly evolves.

Three Masked Singer episodes in, and somebody’s gotta say it: Why have the judges been wearing the same outfits since the season premiere?

We’re only three episodes into season 3 of “The Masked Singer” but half of the contestants from Group A are gone. Of the four celebrities who sang on the February 12 episode, one of the biggest crowd pleasers was the singer hidden inside the Turtle costume.

We’ve been wondering who is famous face behind that elaborate mask ever since he performed on the premiere. On that post-Super Bowl episode, he made Seal‘s signature tune “Kiss From a Rose” his own. Then on week 2 he did the same with “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur.

Exclusive: Coming off Apple’s The Morning Show, Gugu Mbatha-Raw is heading to another streaming drama. The British actress has been cast in Loki, the Disney+ series starring Tom Hiddleston as the trickster demi-god and brother to Thor, I have learned.

As is the case with every Marvel project, details about Mbatha-Raw’s role are kept under wraps but I hear it is a prominent character, possibly a female lead. In addition to Hiddleston, the only actor who has been confirmed by Marvel/Disney, Mbatha-Raw joins in the series fellow cast members Owen Wilson and Sophia Di Martino. Marvel had no comment.

In the new Marvel Studios series, Hiddleston returns as the mercurial Loki, the Asgardian god of mischief and everyone’s favorite Marvel villain, in stories that take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with a likely tie-in to the May 2021 supernatural sequel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

It really is a pity: All of those woolly legs, yet not one left to stand on when it came to the elimination on this week’s The Masked Singer.

Yep, Llama got the boot at the end of Wednesday’s episode. And I was sad to see him go: White Tiger’s off-key warbling and cornball dance moves are getting old fast, and I’d much rather have seen that cat take a hike (though the judges seem to looooove him) than to have the woolly weirdo pack it all in.

Days ahead of Sunday’s BAFTA awards, “The Morning Show” star Gugu Mbatha-Raw has spoken out about a “stark lack of inclusivity” at high-level awards shows.

Taking the stage at the annual Newport Beach UK Honors event in London, in association with Variety, on Wednesday night, where she was named a Breakthrough Artist, Mbatha-Raw said the film and TV industry can be a “very discouraging business.”

A limited series adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel novel has been set up at Showtime through CBS Television Studios with a big production commitment. It will be written and executive produced by Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, who have signed a multi-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios.

Star Trek franchise’s Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman are also executive producing the project. The #4PercentChallenge pushes for greater representation of women directors.

The BFI, Working Title Films and Lionsgate UK have today committed to push for greater representation of women directors as part of Time’s Up’s #4PercentChallenge.

The initiative is so named because just 4% of the top 1,200 studio films made over the last decade were directed by women, according to research by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

By taking the “challenge”, companies commit to working with a female director on a feature film in the next 18 months. The project was formally launched by actress Tessa Thompson at Sundance earlier this year.

In a competitive situation, NBC has landed TriBeCa, an hourlong drama based on the hit Korean original series Sky Castle, from Supergirl executive producers/showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner and Supergirl producers Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.

Written by Queller and Rovner, TriBeCa has received a put pilot commitment. Described as a sophisticated family drama set in New York’s most expensive Zip code, the show explores the inner lives of a group of families and the lengths they will go to ensure their children succeed, regardless of the cost.

Queller and Rovner executive produce alongside Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter and the original series’ writer Hyun Mi Yoo, director Hyuntak Jo and executive producer Joon Suh Park. Warner Bros. TV, where Queller, Rovner and Berlanti are under overall deals, is the studio.

FX released the trailer for the third and final season of its X-Men series “Legion,” and by the looks of it, things are even stranger than its first two seasons.

David Haller (Dan Stevens) is now situated in a remote commune calling himself “The Magic Man,” while his former friends and Summerland, including the Shadow King (Navid Negahban), are plotting to kill him. There’s also a shot of Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) as the Mad Hatter.

Exclusive: Supergirl executive producer/co-showrunner Robert Rovner is expanding bis relationship with Warner Bros. TV, signing a multi-year deal with the studio behind the CW superhero drama series.

Under the pact, Rovner will continue to work on Supergirl alongside fellow exec producer/showrunner Jessica Queller, as well as create new series for broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist, has been renewed by the CW for next season, its fifth.

Rovner joined Supergirl midway through the first season as a consulting producer, and was elevated to executive producer at the beginning of season 2.

He and Queller were elevated to co-showrunners alongside Supergirl co-creator Andrew Kreisberg in June 2017 and took full reins of the series several months later when Kreisberg was suspended and subsequently removed from his CW/Wbtv series over misconduct allegations.
