The third season of “Dark Winds” might be one of its best yet.
In the latest season, Zahn McClarnon’s Joe Leaphorn is tracking down a missing Native teenager who goes missing after his friend is murdered. At home, his wife Emma (Deanna Allison) is struggling to forgive him and decides to leave. Amid it all, Leaphorn is facing generational trauma and confronting his past.
Although the show has largely gone unrecognized by Emmy voters, there’s still time to consider the AMC thriller and McClarnon’s performance when it comes to drama categories.
Take episode 6, which revolves around a ketamine fever dream that sees Joe transported back in time, threading together three narrative threads: the traditional Navajo story of the Hero Twins facing the Ye’iitsoh; Joe’s present-day confrontation with a monster that’s been haunting him throughout Season 3; and the revelation of a deeply personal childhood trauma.

Any project involving Steven Spielberg should be easy to watch online, especially if it stars bona fide greats like Josh Brolin, Keri Russell, Will Patton, Alan Tudyk, Sean Astin, Gary Busey, Skeet Ulrich, and Michael Spears. However, "Into the West" -- a Western drama the "Jurassic Park" director produced for Dreamworks Television and TNT in the mid-2000s -- proves that even star-studded Spielberg ensemble pieces can get lost in the ether.
"Into the West" is an ambitious project, with all six episodes clocking in at almost two hours each and covering a lot of American history. What's more, the series tapped some notable directors to helm the saga, including horse opera veteran Simon Wincer, who directed one of the all-time great Westerns in "Lonesome Dove."

[This story contains major spoilers from the penultimate episode of 1923 season two, “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters.”]
The penultimate season two episode of 1923 delivered death after death. A whopping seven bodies were left in wake of the sixth episode from creator Taylor Sheridan, titled “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters.” Everything that happened will barrel the Western saga into what is sure to be a propulsive season finale, but let’s stop for a moment and mourn what was lost.
Michael Spears has been playing Runs His Horse for two seasons on the Yellowstone prequel series, with Jeremy Gauna inheriting his role as Pete Plenty Clouds after the untimely death of original star Cole Brings Plenty. Cole died about two months after the season one finale released. (A cause of death was not revealed.) Cole was the nephew of Mo Brings Plenty, the American Indian affairs coordinator on both 1923 and Yellowstone, playing Mo, the right-hand man to Chief Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham), who is a future...

One does not simply pick their favorite Lord of the Rings movie. Oh, we do? Well, Peter Jackson does, too, giving his definitive pick that will no doubt divide Lord of the Rings fans. No, it’s not Ralph Bakshi’s movie, but instead The Two Towers.
Speaking with Letterboxd, Peter Jackson said that as of now, his favorite movie of the Lord of the Rings saga is the second installment. “The Two Towers, I think. But if I see them again I might have a totally different one.” But Jackson was careful to note that he’s not just sitting around his hobbit-hole watching his own flicks, adding, “I can’t watch my own films. I just, I mean, one day…I sort of enjoy it more as more time goes by, so one day I’ll watch them again. I hope you enjoy ’em!” If only he could shake them from his memory…...

When it comes to epic television miniseries events, some of the best of the bunch are Westerns. Be it Lonesome Dove, Hatfields & McCoys, 1883, or Into the West, there is a lot of history left to uncover. But when it comes to the Western, no state in the union quite hits the horse opera on the head quite like the Lone Star State itself. So, when History Channel produced the five-part Texas Rising in 2015, audiences weren't surprised that the narrative featured quite a dynamic cast of actors that included heavyweights like Bill Paxton, Ray Liotta, Brendan Fraser, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan opposite notable up-and-comers Max Thieriot and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. If you're looking for the next big Western miniseries to devour, look no further than this one, which witnesses the birth of the infamous Texas Rangers.

Into The West may not be the most famous Western series out there, but its stacked cast and immersive storytelling make it one of the most underrated. The show follows the separate lives of an Indigenous American and a White settler, whose journeys are bound together when the latter marries the former's sister. It’s a very powerful story of humanity, love, and acceptance in a historical period that famously lacked these values, making it an excellent series in the Western genre.
Although his fingerprints are all over the project, many audiences may not have been aware that Steven Spielberg was involved in the creation and production of Into the West, as it's very different from anything else he’d made before. The show clearly marketed itself as a Western, with actors like Josh Brolin, Skeet Ulrich, and Alan Tudyk as the main draws, but it likely wouldn't have been...

It's nearly Thanksgiving, and if you're looking back on America's history during this time, we have the six-part miniseries for you. Back in 2005, Steven Spielberg teamed up with TNT to produce a twelve-hour event that chronicled the period of expansion within the American frontier between 1825 and 1890, covering some of the most important events of the 19th century. Along for the ride were a host of notable stars, including Josh Brolin, Keri Russell, Gil Birmingham, Zahn McClarnon, Rachael Leigh Cook, Will Patton, Graham Greene, and so many more, each of whom contributed to this grand story that spans generations. If you love Westerns and you're looking for a thoughtful and exciting binge this holiday season, give Into the West a try.

Released in 2005, Into the West is a special kind of Western. Most examples of Western movies and shows feature characters exploring the great American West. They tackle manifest destiny, a journey to the frontier, and conflict between the Indigenous and the colonizing community. Some non-traditional productions twist that trope. Still, they all generally revolve around the same idea of an intruder wandering into native territory and preparing for a fight of some kind. Sometimes, they fight against their own people. Sometimes, they fight against the native people. In most cases, there is certainly a fight of some kind.

Powell's steady career path, prior roles, and solid foundation set the stage for his current success in the industry. Well-established collaborations and mentorships with industry veterans have played key roles in Powell's rise to stardom. Josh Brolin's diverse talent shines in both Western movies and TV shows, elevating his memorable characters. Jonah Hex may not have been a hit, but Brolin's fun performance adds some cheesy entertainment value. “Oppenheimer” is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations. That’s one shy of the all-time record of 14 nominations so it missed out on Oscars history in the nomination phase.
However, Universal’s movie could match Academy Awards history in the awards phase by equalling the record of 11 Oscar wins overall. So far, three films have won 11 Academy Awards. They were “Ben-Hur” in 1960, “Titanic” in 1998, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Here’s the breakdown of what awards they won.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept the 2023 Oscars by winning seven Academy Awards. In that seven were six above-the-line awards, which is an Oscars record. Seven Oscars is also the most amount any film has won in a single year since “Gravity” also won seven in 2014. But that movie didn’t win Best Picture (“12 Years a Slave” did), so what about Best Picture winners only? The 95th Academy Awards are behind us now, and one of the most interesting categories was Best Original Song. Winning an Oscar for an original song is definitely a prestigious honor, but perhaps the second most coveted prize for original movie music is the Grammy. Being voted on by two different academies means there’s bound to be a lot of discrepancies between the awards, especially with different voting deadlines and eligibility rules. With that in mind, what Oscar winning songs have also managed to get at least one Grammy nomination?

The former actor, age 46, has been accused of sex trafficking, sexual assault against a child younger than 16 and child abuse while allegedly leading a cult. He was arrested on Tuesday afternoon near the North Las Vegas home which he shares with his five wives.
Best known for his role as Sioux tribe member Smiles a Lot in Kevin Costner’s Oscar-winning blockbuster “Dances with Wolves,” Chasing Horse was born in on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. He followed up that role with parts in “The Broken Chain,” “Into the West” and “Dreamkeeper.”
He did not speak during his first courtroom appearance before Justice of the Peace Belinda Harris scheduled a bail hearing for Monday, according to an Associated Press report.

Since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was the last time Peter Jackson expected to be a part of the Tolkien universe, he needed the perfect song to end his sprawling cinematic journey across the magical Middle-earth. Although /Film called it "the worst Peter Jackson hobbit movie, "Five Armies" is elevated by the moving ballad "The Last Goodbye" in the end credits.
"The Last Goodbye" creates a full-circle moment by having Billy Boyd, who famously played the cheeky hobbit Pippin in the original trilogy, write and sing. This song serves as a callback to one of his most well-known scenes from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" where he sings "The Edge of Night" for a scowling Denethor. Similar to "The Last Goodbye," it is a quiet piece composed by Boyd where his character reflects on the dangers of war and lost friendships. Boyd...

The massive Rings of Power series may have dominated the Tolkien-sphere in the past few months but it's not the only interesting Lord of the Rings spin-off potentially coming out in 2022. Though delays have meant the Lord of the Rings: Gollum game doesn't have a clear release date, its impending release is enough to make fans of the eccentric character excited.
Not everyone loves Gollum though, and it's fair to say he's a character that divides opinion. Whether Gollum-haters skeptical that he was ever redeemable or Sméagol lovers who put him among the series' best characters, Lord of the Rings fans have plenty of hot takes about him that they took to Reddit to share.

The lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth is vast and sometimes confusing. There's over 9,000 years worth of intricate history that film and television has not even touched on. For those who have been watching Amazon's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," it's been exciting to explore new corners of Middle-earth and the early lives of beloved characters like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). One of the key places that we are introduced to in the first episodes of the series is Valinor, also known as the Undying Lands. It is a tranquil, sprawling land where Galadriel grew up that she describes as a "winterless spring."
In "The Return of the King" novel, Tolkien depicts Frodo's experience in Valinor:
"Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water ... the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back,...

Composer Geoff Zanelli is the man behind the music of Showtime’s “The First Lady,” the anthology series documenting the political lives of Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). Zanelli won an Emmy for his score of another historical project, 2005’s “Into the West” which focused on American expansion during the 1800s. However, the composer tells Gold Derby that the history is not what really interests him. “I’m not really a history buff,” he declares. “I’m a story buff and I’m a character buff, and that’s what I’m interested in.” Watch more of our exclusive video interview with Zanelli above.
Zanelli argues that he only needed to look at the performances of the three leads for inspiration. “I can’t think of a composer that wouldn’t want to get a phone call from someone saying we have...

Emmy-award winning composer Geoff Zanelli is slated to compose the music for “The First Lady,” premiering on Showtime. The new hour-long anthology drama follows the lives of three of America’s First Ladies and stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.
Zanelli served as composer of films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Christopher Robin,” and he won an Emmy award for his work in the Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks miniseries “Into the West.” He also was nominated for HBO’s “The Pacific,” another Spielberg collaboration.
“I’ve had the honor of writing music for ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Into The West,’ both shows about distinct times in America’s history, but nothing as intimate as ‘The First Lady,'” Zanelli said. “We’re so up close and personal in this show.

The Original Django (1966) will be available on 4K Ultra HD with Texas Adios included on Blu-ray May 25th From Arrow Video
In this definitive spaghetti western, Franco Nero gives a career-defining performance as Django, a mysterious loner who arrives at a mud-drenched ghost town on the Mexico-us border, ominously dragging a coffin behind him. After saving imperilled prostitute Maria (Loredana Nusciak), Django becomes embroiled in a brutal feud between a racist gang and a band of Mexican revolutionaries
With Django, director Sergio Corbucci (The Great Silence) upped the ante for sadism and sensationalism in westerns, depicting machine-gun massacres, mud-fighting prostitutes and savage mutilations. A huge hit with international audiences, Django s brand of bleak nihilism would be repeatedly emulated in a raft of unofficial sequels.

On Sunday night, the Writers Guild Awards handed out its screenwriting prizes in a virtual setting, signaling a historic moment for women at the Oscars, specifically the screenplay awards.
Emerald Fennell won best original screenplay for her revenge drama “Promising Young Woman” over Oscar-nominated films “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Aaron Sorkin). Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” was not eligible for nomination at the annual guild ceremony. If Fennell manages to win the Oscar for original screenplay, she’ll be the first solo female screenwriter winner of the category since Diablo Cody for “Juno” in 2007.
Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” was ineligible at the WGA Awards, as was fellow Oscar nominee “The Father” from Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller. While a safe bet to win adapted screenplay seemed to be Kemp Powers’ “One Night in Miami,” it was the nine-person writing...

Ian McKellen and his “Lord of the Rings” co-star John Rhys-Davies are among the actors lending their voices to Project Northmoor, a crowdfunding charity campaign that seeks to raise funds to buy J.R.R. Tolkien’s home on Northmoor Road in North Oxford, England. The home, which is now for sale, is where the author started work on his “Lord of the Rings” franchise. The goal is to not only buy the house but also to turn it into the world’s first Tolkien literary center.
“We cannot achieve this without the support of the worldwide community of Tolkien fans, our fellowship of funders,” McKellen says in a video posted December 2 to launch Project Northmoor. The actor and Rhys-Davies are joined in the video by “The Hobbit” star Martin Freeman, “Lord of the Rings” illustrator John Howe, and Annie Lennox, who won the Oscar for Best Original Song with “Into the West...

Dare to go back when director Mike Flanagan continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining” with “Doctor Sleep,” a screenplay based on the novel by Stephen King. To mark the release on 9th March, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys (and four more nominations there this year), but she won’t be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King.” It would’ve been a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. But it wasn’t meant to be. She made the shortlist, but missed the cut when the motion picture academy announced its final nominees. Check out of this year’s contenders in all 24 categories here.

This wasn’t Beyonce’s first close call at the Oscars. She co-wrote the song “Listen” from 2006’s big-screen adaptation of “Dreamgirls,” which she also starred in. That film was nominated for eight Oscars overall, including Best Original Song for three new tunes that were added to the score including “Listen,...

“The Song of Names” “offers a really great palette for music,” says composer Howard Shore. “It covers 50 years,” including the periods before, during and after WWII. And the story involves “a virtuoso violinist, so the music score onscreen and the score itself were very appealing to work on.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Shore above.
Directed by Francois Girard, the Sony Pictures Classic release centers on a man (Tim Roth) haunted by the disappearance of his best friend (Clive Owen), a violin prodigy, before a 1951 concert that would’ve launched his promising music career. When he discovers his friend might still be alive, he searches the globe to find him.

Before Shore ever saw the footage for the film he delved into his own research, “filling my mind and intellect up with the period and the music that we chose for the onscreen performances.

Getting people to see a movie in a theater is a craft seemingly as mysterious as anything done to make the movie itself. It’s also one that is open to a wide degree of creativity, as proved by the degree of success Steven Lewis Simpson has achieved for his indie feature “Neither Wolf nor Dog.”
“I opened in certain theaters where I knew the film would do well,” says Simpson, who wrote, directed, produced, shot and edited the picture, and says it has had the longest first theatrical run of any film this decade. “Neither Wolf nor Dog” premiered Jan. 20, 2017, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and went on to play small towns across the northern United States. It’s played in theaters in a dozen states, and is still booking them. The movie comes for the first time to the Los Angeles area with a run that started Sept.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys, but she may be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King”; the song dropped on July 10 in advance of the film’s opening on July 19. Do you think it’ll cross that off her Egot bucket list? It would be a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. Listen to “Spirit” above.
Written by Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth along with Beyonce, the song will be featured in the film as well as on “The Lion King: The Gift,” a compilation album produced and curated by Beyonce that will include the work of African artists and producers. Salmanzadeh has numerous songwriting credits for a variety of artists, including Ellie Goulding (“Love Me Like You Do”), Taylor Swift (“End Game”) and Ariana Grande. Labrinth, meanwhile, recently released “LSD,” a collaboration album with Sia and Diplo.
