Damn. it was a good year for music.

It didn’t always feel that way, though. While Kendrick Lamar’s aforementioned fourth studio album -- which hit like a meteor on the Friday before the rapper’s monster set to close out Coachella -- much of 2017 was defined by growers rather than out of the gate jams and much of the summer passed without a bona fide “Song of” said season. (Barely. More on that in a second.)

Really, it's only on looking back at the cavalcade of "Best Of" lists that footnote every year that you realize how full of noteworthy sounds 2017 in particular was. And now, with the nearly ubiquitous acceptance of streaming as the primary method of song consumption, not only is the roster of artists who find both large audiences and critical acclaim more diverse and democratized than ever, but the entire idea of a publication-determined "Best Music of the Year" feels almost silly. Christmas movies suggest family-friendly, heartwarming tales, designed for peak holiday family moviegoing. And then there’s the other kind — the late-breaking, high-profile, A-list titles designed to hit the box office and Oscar voters’ consciousness. Some of these launched at prestige fall film festivals (“Downsizing,” “Molly’s Game,” “Hostiles,” “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”); others are bonafide awards contenders (Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread”); and some, like Hugh Jackman vanity musical “The Greatest Showman,” will soon skid into either bad reviews or audience reaction, or both.

Herewith, a ranking of the Christmas movies in order of their likely Oscar prospects.

Neither a remake nor a direct continuation of the 2003 game of the same name, Black Mirror is a point and click horror/thriller that takes place in the late 19th Century and features a story of supernatural and the occult, as seen through the eyes of one David Gordon, youngest member and heir of the Gordon family. Made by King Art Games (also responsible for Battle World Kronos, Book of Unwritten Tales 1 and 2 and The Dwarves) Black Mirror has a lot of potential, but does it live up to expectations?

The singer recently got her first taste of a popular seasonal tradition — baking Christmas cookies! — with a little help from her 2½-year-old son Isaiah Michael.

Being paid less than her male co-stars is no longer an issue for Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain.

Why? Because she simply refuses to accept lower salaries!

Netflix’s new animated comedy “Big Mouth” takes on adolescence from a distinctly adult point of view, tracking the middle school adventures of a pack of tweens whose bodies are changing in crazy ways. Fortunately, their antics are brought to life by the crème de la crème of voice acting — starting with the powerhouse himself, co-creator Nick Kroll.

It wasn’t a surprise when Kroll, an executive producer of the show, recruited his friend and Broadway co-star John Mulaney to the roster. After that, the voice cast list seems to be a handful of your favorite SNL alums and comedy icons. Even Dick Whitman makes a small, yet savory appearance.

Following ecstatic early reviews for “Blade Runner 2049,” Denis Villeneuve is in talks to helm Sony Pictures’ epic “Cleopatra” remake. Producers Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal optioned the best-selling 2010 biography “Cleopatra: A Life,” by Stacy Schiff. James Cameron, Paul Greengrass, and David Fincher were previously in the running, but Deadline reports that Villeneuve is at the top of the list. Villeneuve is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most coveted directors, with “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and now “Blade Runner 2049,” which has critics raving. The director is also developing a remake of “Dune,” the sci-fi classic by Frank Herbert, with Legendary Entertainment.

It has been rumored that Angelina Jolie would play the legendary Egyptian queen, but Sony would be wise to heed recent charges of whitewashing that have tanked other blockbusters. The script has seen three different scribes so far: David Scarpa, Eric Roth and Brian Helgeland.

Words like “masterpiece” are being thrown around by more than one critic when talking about Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel, which means you’ll probably want to order tickets right now to what is shaping up to be the most acclaimed blockbuster of the fall.

“Blade Runner 2049” is set thirty years after the events of Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking original. The plot concerns Ryan Gosling’s Officer K, a member of the Los Angeles Police Department who is tasked with finding the missing Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) in an attempt to save humanity from a replicant manufacturer named Niander Wallace, played by Jared Leto. With ‘Game of Thrones‘ clamoring for more after the recent season seven finale, HBO has released a new behind the scenes show titled ‘The Game Revealed‘. The seven-part series provides an in-depth look at what it took to bring season seven to life, as well as what’s coming as the series nears the end of it’s run. Luckily, fans who are still dissecting and debating the major developments of season can watch the first episode of the series below.

Taylor Swift dropped the second song off her upcoming album Reputation on Sunday morning, causing a massive debate amongst her Swifties on social media over the inspiration behind “…Ready for It.”

The star duo — Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg — are reminding us just why we love them so much with a hilarious spoof on the iconic pottery scene from 1990’s Ghost.

In the clip, posted on Stewart’s Instagram, the legendary homemaker is in a dark room and cracks an egg into a blender bowl then turns it on to start mixing up what is sure to be an attention-grabbing scene with Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody playing in the background.

Netflix may be in massive debt, but that hasn’t changed much for the streaming giant, which announced a robust list of new additions today. Todd Haynes’ “Carol” is heading to Netflix, as well as two other masterpieces from provocative auteurs: Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream.” As the summer movie season winds down, Netflix has plenty of gems to carry you into fall.

The Orchard has today announced its acquisition of the worldwide rights to Lynn Shelton’s new drama “Outside In,” starring Jay Duplass, Edie Falco, Kaitlyn Dever, and Ben Schwartz. The Orchard has worldwide theatrical, digital rental, and sales, cable/satellite VOD, airline, DVD and soundtrack rights to the new feature. Following The Orchard’s theatrical and digital release, Netflix will be releasing the film on its worldwide streaming platform.

The film will premiere next month at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and The Orchard is planning a release in early 2018.

After a thousand years of warp storms, the Calaphrax Cluster has re-opened to the universe, and Baltus and his fellow Dark Angel Space Marines join a strike force sent to explore and secure the region, in search of forgotten artefacts and ancient technology! But the forces of Chaos are never far away… and a shameful Dark Angels secret from the Horus Heresy soon leads to a new front in the war!

Ahh, Warhammer 40000. I remember you from my youth. Hours spent painstakingly painting and arranging little figurines on my desk so I could make shooty noises out of the corner of my mouth and stare at them proudly.

What? Game? There’s a game?

Anyway, onto the comic. This volume comes from Titan and collects the first four issues of the series under the title of Will of Iron. There are plenty of opportunities to make shooty noises out of the corner of your mouth throughout because as we all know: in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.

It’s not the destination, however, but the journey that really shines through in this volume.

The artwork, by Tazio Bettin, has some very impactful moments throughout. Made even more stunning by colourist Erica Erin Angiolini, there are a few pages where I just stopped to gape at the beautiful space vistas that these two have managed to bring alive. In fact, if it had been a comic comprised entirely of dramatic space landscapes, I would have been happy (but maybe a little bored). Luckily, we also get some well envisioned characters and action sequences as well.

On the story side, it’s written by George Mann. In our review of the first issue by Dean Fuller, he mentions how the story is not really for people new to Warhammer 40k or the surrounding universe. For this first volume, that description still stands true. I get that Space Marines don’t like Chaos Space Marines because of reasons and the Chaos Marines are probably the bad guys because they are uglier and wear black (possibly because it’s slimming?) but, beyond that, I don’t have much of an in depth knowledge myself. I mean, why can’t they all just get along?

I also realised, on the my third read through of the volume, that I didn’t know any of the character’s names. At first, I thought it was because they had names like Inquisitor Sabbethiel, Interregator-Chaplain Altheous, and Master Seraphus, which are long and complicated and refuse to stay in my brain. But on a fourth read through, I came to the conclusion that character development is on the weaker side.

Inquisitor Sabbethiel (just writing that name is a pain) and her motley crew are by far the most interesting group in the volume, but they are just teased at. Who are they? Why are they following them? They are also the most varied bunch of characters in the comic, providing a stark contrast to the faceless space marines and armies who shoot at each other for the rest of the issue. Maybe a bit more character time and less epic battles might have balanced it out, but an argument could be made that you don’t buy a ‘Warhammer’ comic for the emotional journey. Pew pew pew!

All in all, not a terrible volume. If you’re a 40k fan, and have the lore down, or are looking for a fast-paced, action-filled read this might be one worth checking out. But for the uninitiated or a random passer-by? Maybe not quite your cup of tea.

“Breaking Bad” fans may want to invest in Sony PlayStation Vr sooner rather than later. Variety has confirmed that series creator Vince Gilligan is developing a “Breaking Bad” virtual reality project, which is being described as more of an experience for the Sony platform and not a Vr game. That’s about all the information that is known at this point, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see if the project will continue the story where it left off (perhaps following Jesse Pinkman) or simply be set in the “Breaking Bad” universe.

The film community is mourning the loss of Roger Moore. The British actor, best known for playing James Bond, passed away on Tuesday in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer. Moore’s children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian, confirmed the news via Twitter. The actor was 89.

“The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone,” read the statement. “We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for Unicef which he considered to be his greatest achievement.”

These characters have been so damaged by painful life experiences that they feel worthless and get in their own way, sometimes with tragic consequences.

That kind of drama is what drew me to Jj and to Nicole, two characters who have since been completely rewritten to lose both their zest for life and their heartbreaking self-esteem problems.

It also made Jack and Jennifer's relationship interesting back in the day, because the conflict primarily came from Jack's overwhelming sense of guilt and fear.

And it could make Eric an interesting character now, if only Days of Our Lives would put an original spin on it and not just try to copy what Jack and Jennifer had.

A Montana rancher, a Kansas farmer and a Louisiana commercial fishermen might not necessarily fit our stereotype of environmental activist, but as the new documentary “Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman” shows the drastic changes to the earth’s environment are directly affecting the professions these men love. In this epic documentary, based on best-selling author Miriam Horn’s book, co-directors Susan Froemke, John Hoffman and Beth Aala had to rely on three different cinematographers to capture the three men’s stories and the stunning landscapes they call their office.

Cinematographer Bob Richman’s work was largely focused on the capturing the footage shot of ranching in Montana, while DPs Buddy Squires and Thorsten Thielow were tasked with shooting in Kansas and Louisiana.

IndieWire recently caught up with Richman to learn about how he approached capturing the majesty of “Big Sky” country and the life of a rancher.

What camera and lenses did you use?...

There was a lot to love about Sunday night’s Oscars – and we’re not just talking about the candy drops and surprise wins. The stars brought it in a big way on the red carpet, stepping out in one gown after another that was worthy of a spot on our best dressed list (and the guys were no slouches in the style department, either). There were tons of gorgeous trends (from sparkling champagne gown to dazzling headbands), lots of memorable beauty moments (the eye makeup alone deserved its own spotlight) and plenty of red carpet risks to discuss. And...

It’s been 16 years since Pixar won the Oscar for best animated short (Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds”). Wouldn’t it be fitting if Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” ended the drought? That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).

However, “Piper” faces stiff competition, particularly from Theodore Ushev’s much darker “Blind Vaysha” from the National Film Board of Canada, which has earned a dozen Oscars.

The other three contenders range from Robert Valley’s bleak “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” (Vimeo’s first Oscar nom), the melancholy Western, “Borrowed Time” (made independently by Pixar’s Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj), and the introspective “Pearl” from Oscar winner Patrick Osborne (Disney’s “Feast”), the first Vr nominee from Google Spotlight Stories.

Remaking a beloved film isn’t always the easiest task, but what happens when the original wasn’t all that good to begin with?

The 1988 theatrical release of “Beaches” was a lachrymose lovefest that baffled the critics who found its schmaltz and manipulative melodrama far too heavy-handed for consumption. That didn’t keep filmgoers from buying tickets or wringing out their tear ducts for this earnest story of lifelong friends. No matter how hard-hearted you were, it was clear that the Garry Marshall-directed film had its charms, not the least of which was Mayim Bialik and Bette Midler as the older and younger versions of the brassy C.C. Bloom, and the latter’s ability to sell “Wind Beneath My Wings” to anyone with a Bff.

“Icarus” starts out as one kind of movie, and then becomes a much better one. At first, director Bryan Fogel seems intent on making the sporting world’s answer to “Super Size Me,” by subjecting himself to performance-enhancing drugs to see if he can avoid detection. But then he stumbles into shocking revelations about Russia’s massive doping conspiracy and the scenario gets dark, gripping, and altogether more important.

The jarring shift doesn’t quite rescue the movie from uneven storytelling and murky research, but “Icarus” undoubtedly succeeds at emphasizing the shocking nature of Russia’s cover-up — and the dangerous reverberations it has for a key whistleblower.

Oscar-winning writer/director Stephen Gaghan is set to direct the cinematic adaptation of the dystopian video game “The Division,” Variety reports. The film will also star Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, who were previously attached.

“The Division” follows the story of agents of the Strategic Homeland Division who monitor Manhattan following a smallpox outbreak, defending the city against the rise in criminal activity, as well as trying to uncover the mystery of the outbreak.
