Cher and Mary Bono remain locked in a bitter power struggle over music royalties, even after a judge ruled last May that the singer’s 1978 divorce agreement with ex-husband Sonny Bono was strong enough to fend off Mary’s attempt to recapture his publishing interests.
At a court hearing Monday, a lawyer representing Mary argued that Cher’s right to collect her 50 percent share of composition royalties for hit songs including “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On” ended for good on July 1, 2022. That was the date Irving Azoff...

One thing Cher’s career has never been is predictable.
As a teenager in the Sixties, she cut her teeth with future husband Sonny Bono and producer Phil Spector. They would produce massive pop hits like “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On” that became staples in the Seventies. For a lesser star, that would have been the end of a good run but Cher is not like any other star. She and Sonny ended up reviving their careers with a variety show until they divorced. Cher would...

Cher has won her yearslong copyright lawsuit against Sonny Bono’s widow over royalty payments from the Sonny & Cher catalog, a federal judge in the Central District of California ruled on Wednesday.
The dispute tied to Cher’s suit goes back many years. When she and Bono settled their divorce in 1978, it was determined that Cher was entitled to a 50 percent stake in the Sonny & Cher publishing catalog. After Bono died in 1998, Cher and Bono’s heirs entered a partnership over the songs. But in 2016, Mary Bono exercised the Copyright Act’s “termination rights,...

Is Cher’s $1 million royalties claim against Mary Bono strong enough? A judge seems to think so.
At a court hearing Monday, a federal judge said he believes Cher is entitled to receive ongoing composition royalties from songs including “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On” as outlined in her 1978 divorce agreement with Sonny Bono – despite Sonny’s heirs exercising their right to recapture his underlying copyrights under the federal Copyright Act.

On February 2nd, 1993 — and on the infinite number of days that followed it — Bill Murray’s curmudgeonly weatherman Phil Connors woke up to the sounds of “I Got You Babe” and reported on the Groundhog Day festivities in Punxutawney, Pennsylvania. And while his displeasure about having to cover such a nonsensically rodent-centric holiday eventually faded, the enduring charm of “Groundhog Day” has not.
In the three decades since Harold Ramis’ classic comedy hit theaters, the time loop formula of characters being stuck repeating a single day has been imitated by everyone from Tom Cruise to Natasha Lyonne. While the heights of “Groundhog Day” are hard to top, time loop films have become a charming addition to nearly ever genre under the sun. Ramis’ idea ended up providing a shot of adrenaline that allowed time travel cinema to flourish for another quarter century.

Groundhog Day cast members will reunite in Chicago on February 2 to celebrate the life and career of director Harold Ramis. The reunion will feature an immersive experience inspired by the 1993 film, as well as iconic costumes, props and set pieces. The comedy's mayor himself, Brian Doyle-Murray, will appear with a real groundhog to forecast the next six weeks of weather, just like in the movie.
“Strike up the music, the band has begun... the Pennsylvania Polka!” Celebrating Groundhog Day every February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pa, is one of those annual events fans just can't seem to get enough of — despite the ice-cold, freezing temperatures those in attendance must endure. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and other music stars served as major sources of inspiration behind the Halloween costumes displayed on morning and daytime talk shows this year.
Three shows featured hosts dressing up as Swift, with Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, Live‘s Kelly Ripa and The Talk‘s Amanda Kloots all dressing as the superstar singer-songwriter, with the latter two also passing out friendship bracelets in an ode to Swift’s hit Eras tour.
Live With Kelly and Mark took the Swift inspiration one step further, dubbing their annual Halloween extravaganza The Eras Show as they looked back through different decades of pop culture and of Live‘s own onscreen Halloween celebrations. While Ripa and Consuelos kicked things off with their take on the Barbie movie, they doled out friendship bracelets in an homage to Swift and spoke about the Eras tour inspiration for their show.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for The Last of Us, Season 1 Episode 8, “When We Are In Need.”]
HBO’s new series The Last of Us premiered to the approval of fans of the video game and viewers who are new to the franchise. Though the thrilling story has just begun, the first episode established the importance of the soundtrack in setting the mood for the post-apocalyptic world.
Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the latter also wrote and directed the video game), The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as grizzled survivor Joel and Bella Ramsey as a teenage girl named Ellie. Taking place after a fungal plague has ravaged the globe, it centers around Joel fulfilling his task of smuggling Ellie beyond a quarantine zone in Boston.
Depeche Mode’s 1987 hit “Never Let Me Down Again” played a significant role during the series premiere. After Joel and his partner Tess (Anna Torv) set out for their journey with Ellie,...

We took a trip back in time in episode 7 of "The Last of Us," revisiting the fateful night of Ellie's infection just three weeks before the start of the season. The episode was the adaptation of "Left Behind," the Dlc (downloadable content) for the first game. For the non-initiated, DLCs are playable add-ons to an existing title released sometime after its initial launch. They are usually reserved for popular games, released as both a treat for fans salivating for more gameplay and extended profit for game studios. New fans are lucky, though — the recent re-release of the series for PlayStation 5 has "Left Behind" included.
Since it is supplemental content, playing a Dlc is not necessary to enjoy or understand the main plot of a game; indeed, they are often separate stories unto themselves. But, including "Left Behind" in the HBO version of "The Last of Us" is in line with...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
While we weren't looking, pop music has become one of the main recurring motifs of "The Last of Us" over the last few years. Though the retro needle drop has become a large staple of modern pop culture, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are not just following trends. In the Fall chapter of the story, Joel (Pedro Pascal) admits to Ellie (Bella Ramsey) that he used to want to be a singer when he was a little boy. This would lead to the opening scene of the game's sequel, "The Last of Us Part II," in which Joel serenades Ellie with "Future Days" by Pearl Jam, a song that soon becomes the entire emotional throughline of the narrative, bookending Ellie's entire character journey.

It becomes more clear with each passing week that "The Last Of Us" is, on many levels, about queer survival. Not surviving forever -- this show's unflinchingly tragic world buries its gays along with pretty much everyone else -- but surviving long enough to find acceptance, connection, and some form of love. This week, in an episode that took place almost entirely in flashback, we saw Ellie (Bella Ramsey) find that love with her best friend Riley (Storm Reid) for the briefest of moments. The pair shared a sweet first kiss in a scene that echoes one from the game's downloadable content add-on, "The Last Of Us: Left Behind."

Over its first six episodes,"The Last of Us" has cleverly allowed Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to mete out details about her past. In doing so, it set up an emotional haymaker of a reveal that brought Ellie's journey into clearer, heartbreaking focus.
The series' seventh episode, titled "Left Behind," finds Ellie flashing back on her time in the Boston Quarantine Zone, where she came of age in the most wrenching of ways. These sequences are framed by Ellie's treatment of a severely wounded Joel (Pedro Pascal), who wants her to leave him to die. She has her reasons for refusing, and that is the heart of this installment and, perhaps, the series as a whole.

The Last of Us Episode 7
“Left Behind” is an episode of The Last of Us that fans have been eagerly anticipating since the show was announced. Although the video game flashback to Ellie and Riley was released as bonus content in 2014, it’s considered to be essential to the game’s overall narrative, as it gives stirring insight into Ellie’s past that lends depth to her relationship with Joel.
The show includes Ellie’s backstory as a part of the main story and stays true to the game where it counts, though some moments are omitted and some new ones are added. We see one of the new scenes early on in the flashback, with Ellie getting into trouble as a Fedra trainee and getting pressured by Officer Kwong to clean up her act so that she can one day become an...

Nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced on Wednesday, February 2 with a new slate of 17 eligible contenders. As usual, fans of musical acts left off the list were outraged. Confusion over why certain artists are deemed more deserving than others remains a head-scratcher. For instance, why is Dolly Parton on the list while Cher continues to be ignored?
See: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees: Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie lead list of 17 contenders
Parton is undeniably treasured in both music and pop culture. The 76-year old has been penning hits for herself and others for over six decades. Her bubbly personality and soft, yet powerful tone is one of the most iconic in country music. But is she really more of a rock star than Cher?

Mary Bono says Cher’s $1 million lawsuit over allegedly unpaid royalties for Sonny & Cher songs including “I Got You Babe” is “groundless” and should be dismissed, according to a new filing in federal court in Los Angeles.
The widow of Sonny Bono — who was elected to replace him in Congress just months after his 1998 death in a skiing accident — claims in her new paperwork that federal law, specifically the Copyright Act, is on her side and trumps any state contract or community property laws cited by Cher in her breach of contract complaint filed Oct.

Where to Watch “Culture Shock”: Hulu
“Into the Dark,” which wrapped its second season earlier this year on Hulu, is an anthology series. By its nature, there’s a certain hit-or-miss quality, especially when the horror collection adds the constraint of tying each installment into a holiday. Some can get too cute by half, while others (like Nacho Vigalondo’s bonkers “Pooka!” or the most recent “Blood Moon”) strip away those ties to find the thematic strength underneath.
It’s what makes “Culture Shock,” the Gigi Saul Guerrero-directed episode of “Into the Dark,” shocking at times, and it also makes it difficult to talk around the specific turns it takes without giving away its ultimate goal. Still, effectively told in three parts, it balances all of those inputs, making it a standout among “Into the Dark” episodes and the greater Blumhouse body of work at large.

Cher filed suit today in Los Angeles against former Rep. Mary Bono, alleging that she is illegally withholding royalties from the hits generated by Sonny & Cher in the 1960s. Mary Bono, the widow of Sonny, stands accused of keeping Cher from her share of royalties on such hits as “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” The suit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, asks for $1 million. Cher and Sonny Bono divorced in 1975, but agreed to split the revenue from the songs they recorded as a duo. The Cher lawsuit alleges that Sonny’s fourth wife, Mary Bono, “has undone” Cher’s ownership of the rights and royalties, but doesn’t specify how that happened. Sonny & Cher were among the most popular pop songsters of the ’60s, increasing their reach in the ’70s with their hit variety show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. Upon their split, Cher went...

Well, Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 7 did not begin as expected.
Rather than picking up where we left off with Ted and Sharon, it opens two days later with Roy and Keeley.
Still, who can resist a montage scored to Sonny and Cher's I Got You Babe?
"I Got You Babe" is a particularly inspired choice in this instance because it evokes Groundhog Dog, the movie, and thus the feeling of being caught in a neverending time loop.
This is the first time we see Roy as an overbearing shadow to Keeley, but the montage quickly offers clues on how this is a long-simmering issue, and Keeley is close to her breaking point.
It's an important storyline because it explores the consequences of Roy accepting the coaching position and moves Keeley and Roy's relationship past the honeymoon stage.
All the individual scenes comprising the storyline are great, especially the scene where Jamie,...

Andra Day, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” • Andra Day’s debut album “Cheers to the Fall” and single “Rise Up” in 2015 earned her a Best R&b Album and Best R&b Performance Grammy nominations, respectively, the latter of which also scored a Daytime Emmy nod after she promoted it in “The View.” About her role in “TUSvBH,” Day told the New York Post, “When I embarked on it, I was like, ‘This is such a bad idea! I’m not an actress.'” She was wrong. She has the Golden Globe and Oscar nomination to prove it.

Exclusive: Cher just tweeted out that on the eve of celebrating her 75th birthday Thursday, she’ll have her life story unfold on movie screens through Universal Pictures. It is a major effort with heavy hitters, and here’s what is happening.
The as yet untitled film will be scripted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, whose recent efforts include adapting Killers of the Flower Moon that is currently in production with Martin Scorsese directing Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and co-writing the upcoming Denis Villenueve-directed Dune epic. The Cher film will be produced by Judy Craymer — whose brainstorm it was to turn the Abba song catalog into the stage musical smash Mamma Mia! — and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman, who produced the Mamma Mia! films with Craymer. That duo will produce with Cher, who starred in the Mamma Mia! sequel. Cher just produced Kaavan, The World’s Loneliest Elephant, which is streaming on Paramount.

Last April, Aaron Lee Tasjan was one of the artists who was invited to perform as part of Willie Nelson’s virtual “Come and Toke It” livestream, a 4-hour-20-minute musical celebration infused with a healthy amount of Thc. As part of the appearance, the East Nashville singer-songwriter got to meet and chat with his hero Nelson and then play a few songs. It should have been a triumphant occasion, but at least one unhappy viewer threatened to ruin the experience for Tasjan.

On August 26th, 1973, Joni Mitchell arrived at Studio Instrument Rentals in Los Angeles, where Neil Young and his band the Santa Monica Flyers were recording the boozy Tonight’s the Night. Joined by guitarists Ben Keith and Nils Lofgren, drummer Ralph Molina, and bassist Billy Talbot, Mitchell and Young tore through “Raised on Robbery,” soon to be released on her album Court and Spark.
If the Tonight’s the Night sessions were indeed a “drunken Irish wake,” as Talbot later recalled, this take on “Raised on Robbery” was the eulogy.

Masked talent formats and survival shows for a pandemic-hit world are among the buzz-worthy projects identified by The Wit’s Fresh TV online session at Mipcom Monday.
Virginia Mouseler, the format tracker’s CEO, framed her online session on Mipcom Online+ like a TikTok feed, complete with dance moves – all while listing her pick of fresh new TV formats.
According to Wit’s data, “The Masked Singer” was this year’s most adapted format, and the masked star concept has been adopted by a slew of similar shows.
Three are being distributed by Banijay Rights and hail from Germany, a territory, Mouseler noted, that was able to resume production quite soon after lockdown.

Another week has passed in Big Brother‘s latest All-Stars season, and things are starting to feel very Groundhog Day in that house.
Just as “I Got You Babe” would inevitably blare from Bill Murray’s alarm clock at 6 am, the Committee alliance predictably stayed in power for another week, all but ensuring the exit of another underdog. And despite Head of Household Memphis’ initial plan to backdoor David — for… reasons? That Memphis seemed to think made sense? — it was Kevin and Da’Vonne who went up on the block, then remained there after Tyler chose not to use the Power of Veto.

As a 1990s teenager growing up in the wilds of suburbia, The Howard Stern Show on E! often served as an introduction to the strange, sometimes funny, occasionally disturbing fringes of celebrity. For every major star that visited the Stern Show––Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Donald Trump (gulp)––there was a Jessica Hahn or Mark Harris, a tabloid icon who excelled at creating controversy. No one in the latter category made more of an impression on this critic’s young mind than Tiny Tim.
As a pop culture-savvy kiddo, I was aware that this odd, Oswald Cobblepot-looking gentleman was a falsetto-voiced singer who had famously married a woman live on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson. But as the Stern interview made clear, there was much more to Tiny Tim than those details. The lengthy chat included his obsessive quest for cleanliness, his love of specific products, a recent incident...

The Beach House (Jeffrey A. Brown)
There’s a lot to like about Jeffrey A. Brown’s feature directorial debut The Beach House, from its gorgeous production design to its ruminations on mankind’s fragility when compared with Mother Nature’s hardier offerings (despite our penchant for believing we hold dominion over Her). It’s therefore easy to appreciate the reason Emily (Liana Liberato), Randall (Noah Le Gros), Mitch (Jake Weber), and Jane (Maryanne Nagel) have arrived at a site that may end up being their tomb because we’re quick to ignore the baked-in irony too. Beyond the Kansas City Chiefs’ comeback, Super Bowl Liv offered few surprises in the way of ads — the vast majority of which premiered online days prior to the game to maximize the impact and brands’ multi-million dollar spend, which this year soared to as high as a record $5.6 million for 30 seconds of airtime on Fox.
Among the spots that premiered during or hours prior to the game, Jeep’s “Groundhog Day”-themed spot starring Bill Murray featured Warner Music’s “I Got You Babe” in a starring role, as had the movie, while Verizon premiered a teaser of a new Pearl Jam single,“River Cross,” in a subdued spot featuring voiceover from Harrison Ford. Perhaps most unexpectedly, rising rapper Ybn Cordae shared screentime with Martin Scorsese and Jonah Hill in Coke’s 60-second spot for Coca-Cola Energy, which also featured Cordae’s song “Rnp.”

The Super Bowl, set to air on Fox Sunday night, has already lined up some great ads, including the Martin Scorsese Coca-Cola Energy ad, and Bryan Cranston’s recreation of “The Shining” for Mountain Dew. Now, Bill Murray has stepped up to revisit his iconic role from Harold Ramis’ 1993 comedy classic, “Groundhog Day.” This Super Bowl ad for Jeep features Murray reprising Phil Connors, perennially caught in a time loop that begins every morning at 6 a.m. with the sounds of “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher. There are other easter eggs featured in the spot, including Stephen Tobolowsky as the ever-annoying Ned Ryerson. Check it out below.
Last year, IndieWire interviewed Bill Murray on the heels of Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die” at Cannes, and he explained why he makes these kinds of cash-grab choices. “It paid for my son’s college,” he said of the “Ghostbusters” franchise.

When Bill Murray repeatedly wakes up on the same morning in Groundhog Day, the radio blares Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe.” It’s a winking reminder of what’s missing in his life, an auditory motivation to change his circumstances and escape his cyclical prison. Kwak shortens film at last minute
SEOUL -- Just two days before the release Thursday of one of the biggest Korean films of the summer, Windstruck, its director, Kwak Jae-yong, cut 10 minutes from the feature in reaction to disappointing audience reaction at the Seoul premiere Monday. The filmmaker tightened up the film by removing 10 minutes, mostly from one sequence in the middle and another close to the end of the film, which opened on more than 300 screens in Korea (which has a little more than 1,100 screens nationwide), making it one of the biggest releases here this summer. The film is also opening simultaneously in Hong Kong and mainland China, the first such Asia-wide debut for a Korean film.
