Kevin Smith is back with a new film, The 4:30 Movie, which is heavily inspired by the writer and director’s mid ’80s upbringing and his movie-loving teenage years.
The 4:30 Movie takes place in New Jersey, where Smith grew up, and large parts were filmed at the Smodcastle Cinemas, which Smith now co-owns. Soundtracked by Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America,” the trailer for the lighthearted coming-of-age film follows a 16-year-old boy (played by Austin Zajur) who finally works up the courage to ask out his crush, Melody (Siena Agudong), to a 4:30 p.m. R-rated film, before “all hilarity breaks loose.”
The film’s official logline reads, “Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites...

Think “Monster Mash” but with a glistening modern pop edge. They slashed onto the scene with 2019’s This is Halloween Volume 1, which introduces the pivotal character of Skeleton Sam (as seen in press photos and around town) and includes such tracks as a cover of Kim Wilde’s debut single “Kids in America.” The work is deliciously dark, often seductively playful, and always guaranteed to get your cold, dead heart beating again. While That ‘90s Show season 1 finale’s comeback from the stars of That ‘70s Show was appropriately nostalgic, the scene accidentally proved that Fez’s story was secretly sad. Like so many earlier sitcom spinoffs, That ‘90s Show had a hard time justifying the presence of That ‘70s Show’s returning original stars. In That ‘90s Show’s pilot episode, Eric, Donna, Kelso, and Jackie all came back for brief cameos, but the characters then left for the rest of season 1. However, in That ‘90s Show’s season 1 finale, they returned en masse once more through some shaky plot mechanics that accidentally made one subplot surprisingly sad.
Throughout That ‘90s Show season 1, Fez dated Sherri. He claimed he never got over Jackie’s decision to leave him for Kelso, even though That ‘90s Show’s Jackie/Kelso reunion was always going to happen. Despite this, Fez seemingly found happiness with Sherri,...

Digimon, as a franchise, has always had the perception of being Pokémon‘s less successful younger brother. That’s bound to happen when two Japanese media franchises choose to name themselves after the pneumonic of “Adjective + Monster,” with Pokémon meaning “Pocket Monsters” and Digimon meaning “Digital Monsters.” That perception, however, isn’t entirely fair. Digimon never reached the cultural heights that Pokémon did because truthfully: very few franchises do. But that doesn’t mean that Digimon didn’t have plenty going for it back during the dawn of the 21st century.
First starting as a series of virtual pet toys before moving on to video games, card games, other merchandizing, manga, and ultimately a moderately successful anime, the Digimon franchise was genuinely successful in the late ’90s and early ’00s. So much so that the digital powers-that-be must have felt they had everything they needed to compete with Pokémon. There...

If you didn’t know Erik Bloomquist’s She Came from the Woods loves the 80s like Pac-Man loves Mrs. Pac-Man, the first few minutes should sell a tubular on-screen time warp. Hormonal camp counselors in short shorts prepare for summer’s end while Kim Wilde’s “Kids In America” blares over opening credits like any other Camp Crystal Lake or Camp Arawak copycat. Bloomquist imbues a love of 80s sleepaway horror titles into a contemporary take on Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman — some titles are even name-dropped in dialogue. It’s hardly a modern satire like Cabin in the Woods but avoids feeling redundant through recreations of golden-age genre magic that’s gone out of style. There’s a passionate attempt to prove life can find new ways in a decade’s old slasher formula, and She Came from the Woods keeps the beat(ings) alive for now.

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Kathryn Merteuil may hate when things don’t go her way, but thanks to “Do Revenge” writer-director Jennifer Kaityn Robinson, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s iconic “Cruel Intentions” character has a whole new life, now revived as the ultimate queen bee: a prep school principal who trims a bonsai tree when she (rarely) feels out of control.
“She was my first dream choice,” Robinson told IndieWire about Gellar’s casting almost 25 years after the beloved 1999 film debuted. “And it was one of those things where you don’t think she’s going to do it. I was like, ‘Yeah, of course, let’s offer it to her and see what happens.’ You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take. But when she said yes, I was flabbergasted and so excited.”
Robinson added, “I will say, her saying yes was kind of co-signing this movie, and made me feel like we were doing something right.

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist. Creepy, suspenseful and suitably gory, it’s a genre-savvy throwback to the summer camp slasher genre.
Set in 1987 (so no pesky mobile phones), the film takes place during the last night of the summer holiday at Camp Briarbrook, run by kindly Gilbert McAlister (William Sadler) his adult daughter Heather (Cara Buono) and her two teenage sons, irresponsible Peter (Spencer List) and sensible Shawn (Tyler Elliot Burke).
When Peter persuades the other teen volunteers to perform a ghost story ritual (a ridiculously simple one – prick your finger and shout “Agatha!”), he...

Kim Shattuck, the singer and guitarist who co-founded and led the SoCal punk band the Muffs alongside contributions to Pixies and Nofx, died Wednesday at the age of 56. A rep for Shattuck’s band the Coolies confirmed her death to Rolling Stone. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als).
“We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck,” the Muffs’ Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald wrote on Facebook. “Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature.

Loosely inspired by the Manson Family murders (that’s what it means when it says “Based on a true story”), creepy slasher flick The Strangers became a hit back in 2008, with its tale of three masked, mostly silent figures terrorising Liv Tyler and husband Scott Speedman. That film made $82m from a $9m budget, so it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken ten years to get the inevitable sequel off the ground. Still, here it is, and while it doesn’t exactly improve on its predecessor, it’s still a perfectly serviceable slasher movie that does exactly what you expect, with a modicum of style to boot.

If there’s one thing Johannes Roberts’ pre-screening introduction confirmed before The Strangers: Prey At Night, it’s that he *obsessively* respects the profoundness of John Carpenter’s genre contributions – to the point where the pic is a stalkerish mixtape of all the filmmaker’s favorite bits.
Subtle hints Hammer-to-the-head homages evoke Halloween’s “The Shape,” roll with The Fog and grind Christine’s gears in an atmospherically overt love-letter to Carpenter that Roberts signs in blood. Dash in a bit of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for flavor and you wonder what individuality this Strangers “offshoot” presents – until Roberts’ execution pushes such thoughts out of your mind. He may be riffing off recognizable horrors staples, but the director’s devotion to royalty is vicious and respectfully realized. Right down to a score you’d believe Carpenter recorded himself.

Come on, Riverdale fans. There's no celebration without an investigation. Crime doesn't take a weekend off.
As much as I hoped for Betty and friends to enjoy the Homecoming festivities on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 11, they had work to do. The clock is ticking on the Jason Blossom mystery, and we need to find the killer.
"Chapter Eleven: To Riverdale and Back Again" is steering us toward the mystery's climax. Riverdale's first season so far has been a dark and addictive thrill ride, with the Jason Blossom crime anchoring the story. I'm hooked!
With only two more episodes left, Riverdale Season 1 Episode 11 pulled us back into the main story by focusing on the murder.
Ultimately, this is something we needed after a few distractions lately. The mystery is what hooked us in the first place. We need to prepare for the reveal at the season's end.

Need to catch up? Check out our previous Riverdale recap here.
Hoo boy… a whole bunch of chickens came home to roost in Riverdale‘s homecoming episode. And when the dust settled, we got ourselves a new arrest in the Jason Blossom case.
Jughead returns home to F.P.’s trailer and is happy to see his dad has cleaned the place up. F.P. even took the time to read Jughead’s manuscript! But he starts asking a lot of questions about Jason Blossom’s death before recommending that Jughead “move on” from the case. Hmmm. Alice is suspicious of F.

Us teenagers are kept underground for a doomed world-building project in this cheap British teen horror flick
Prolific Brit producer Jonathan Willis here attempts a teen-oriented tweak of the science-gone-wrong theme of his 2013 success The Machine. It’s about the doomed Posterity Project, a programme that sequesters the best and brightest youngsters in the Us underground. While their twentysomething handlers uncover the project’s deadlier glitches, director Martin Owen applies plentiful visual gloss. A first-person shooting style necessitates intricate, Peep Show-like eyeline-matching, and the effects work is unusually sophisticated. Yet there’s no dressing up some desperately ordinary stalk-and-slashing, and the budget undermines the world-building: ex-EastEnder Kara Tointon heads a roster of phony Us accents, and while Kids in America gets repeat plays, surely nobody here ventured much beyond Amersham.

But the sisters weren't feeling too blue when we popped over to see them this morning - instead, they were just planning their album. Read on to find out about that, how they feel about being seen as a novelty act, and what amazing ideas we would have seen in '80s Week...

Blonde Electra chose the wrong song for the first X Factor Live Show, according to creative director Brian Friedman.
Speaking on The Xtra Factor, Friedman was asked which of the acts he thought had performed the wrong song.
"I didn't like [Kim Wilde's] 'Kids in America' for Blonde Electra," Friedman said.
"I feel like they're cooler than that. I feel like they're a little bit edgier than that and I know that they're an edgier act, so I don't think it was necessarily right for them."
Blonde Electra were sent home after coming last in the public vote.
They were joined by second-bottom Overload Generation, who were axed after the judges sent the vote to deadlock.

They say don't bite the hand that feeds you, but this is a whole new issue: Nicole Peate, a 25-year-old from England, dislocated her jaw after biting into a triple-layer burger. The burger, called the "Kids in America Burger," is three patties, pretzels and candied bacon and offered at the Almost Famous restaurant in Liverpool. "I didn't think I'd dislocated it," Peate confessed to BBC. "You don't expect it to happen eating a burger, but I tried to eat it with a knife and fork and couldn't. I couldn't open my mouth fully—it felt like I had cramp in my tongue, then I started to get an earache and a headache." She continues, "The next morning, I...

When we chatted with La cyber-rocker Davey Suicide last year, he was already riding waves of positive buzz ahead of his self-named band's Ep Put Your Trust in Suicide, which was released in the fall (check out our review here) and helped catapult them from the industrial rock underground to reach a much wider audience. The band has recently caught the attention of major music media – including Alternative Press, who included them in their new “100 Bands You Need to Know” issue, marked by a special event at South By Southwest last weekend, with Davey in attendance. Not only is he dedicated to his music career (he chose to re-invent himself after a brief solo project and found his niche with the new material), Davey also brings mad fashion skills, which incarnate his obsession with monsters from both fiction and reality through his own custom clothing line, Killers Never Die. When life grants you a news item about Alicia Silverstone's love of chewing up sorghum and mouth-feeding it to her infant, you have two options: 1) Sit around and think about the gamey taste of Alicia Silverstone's kind saliva or 2) relish the resurgence (regurgitation?) of Alicia Silverstone in pop culture and totally re-watch Clueless. It has aged like a yellow-plaid version of the Hope Diamond, kids, stunning and streamlined even now. As we learned with Nine to Five last week, it's time we started awarding the mantle of "best movie ever" to films that actually matter to us. The movies we revisit, with ease. The movies that have nothing to do with bold auteurism or Charles Foster Kane, but important matters like bold humor, funny women, strong outfits, confidence, unpretentious smarts, and best of all, funny women again. Clueless may look and sound like a feature-length Luscious Jackson video set in Holmby Hills,...

Director: Josh Stolberg Writer: Josh Stolberg Starring: David Arquette, Connie Britton, Jennifer Finnigan, Sarah Hyland, Jennifer Jostyn, Jason Mantzoukas, Matt Prokop, Jonathan Silverman, Alan Tudyk "The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance." Aristotle once said that and now Paul (David Arquette), an elementary school teacher, recites Aristotle's philosophy on art to his young class; but we sense that Paul is also providing the audience with writer-director Josh Stolberg's (Kids in America) cinematic philosophy as well. Conception is not about what we see on the outside, it is what is going on the inside of the characters (figuratively and literally). We might understand that later -- but, like Paul's class, the time has not come for us to be able to comprehend such things. Paul's class is so perplexed by the Aristotle quote, that it somehow incites in them the...

X Factor contestants One Direction have insisted that they will stay together as a five piece band, even if they don’t win the ITV show.
The group was put together by Simon Cowell at bootcamp, after Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zain Malik and Niall Horan all impressed him as solo singers, but not enough to make judges houses alone.
Speaking in their official video diary about what they will do if they don’t finish first, Harry Styles said:
I think we definitely will stay as a band.
The rest of the boys cheered and shouted “yes” behind him.
The boys also admitted that their performance of ‘Kids In America’ on last Saturday’s show, was their favourite yet. Liam Payne said:
Last week’s performance for us was absolutely amazing. On behalf of all of us I would say that is the most fun we have ever had on the stage.

Check out the pictures from tonight’s American Anthem themed X Factor show.
Cher Lloyd took on ‘Empire State of Mind’ by Alicia Keys and Jay Z tonight. Afterwards Simon Cowell said:
Any other week I would call that an incredible performance but after last week I’m a little disappointed. Last week was 100% original this was a little bit copycat. I’m not blaming you but in the standard of the competition this year, to make the final you’ve got to be more original. I think your mentor got a little bit lazy.
Mary Byrne sang ‘There You’ll Be’ from the American war movie ‘Pearl Harbour.’ The performance was below par and afterwards the mum of one admitted:
I don’t know. I haven’t been in the zone at all this week. I’m quite low, and lonely for my daughter. I’m very nervous tonight...

One Direction embraced the American theme on tonight’s X Factor show.
The teen sensations sang the Kim Wilde classic ‘Kids In America,’ and were joined onstage by a team of no less than 28 lively cheerleaders.
Liam Payne started the song, with what was actually quite a strong and steady vocal. We Loved the boys high school sports jackets and cardigans and we can so see these guys becoming the newest High School Musical style phenomenon.
It wasn’t a complicated performance, there weren’t many harmonies and the song wasn’t too taxing but all in all it was enjoyable and One Direction fans will have loved it. The boys will sail through to next week after that!
Judges Comments:
Louis Walsh: Boys that was a brilliant way to end the show. You remind me a little bit of Westlife, Take That and Boyzone, you could be the next big boyband.

The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration released their weekly bulletin today, which included new ratings for The Adjustment Bureau and Monte Carlo along with an amended rating for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Sci-fi romance The Adjustment Bureau was rated PG-13 for "brief strong language, some sexuality and a violent image." Based off a short story by Philip K. Dick, the movie was originally scheduled to open this past July before being bumped to September and then to March 2011. Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Terence Stamp and John Slattery, The Adjustment Bureau opens Mar. 4 opposite Rango and Kids in America. Universal Pictures has shifted several upcoming release dates for some of its forthcoming films, and sadly enough, one of them is George Nolfi's "The Adjustment Bureau" with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
"Bureau" was supposed to open Sept. 17, 2010, but we'll have to wait until March 4, 2011 to see it. That's unfortunate, especially because it was one of the films I was really looking forward to this fall.
Anyway, Universal will also release "Skyline" Nov. 12, 2010, and "Kids in America" will open Dec. 3. "The Dark Fields" will open Jan. 21, 2011, with "Sanctum 3D" opening February 4. "Paul" opens March 18.

In another edition of our production notes moniker we have behind the scenes looks at films like Horrible Bosses and Machete while Universal Studios is changing names of films and release dates.
Movieline has released the first image of Colin Farrell in the upcoming film Horrible Bosses, which is currently filming and set for a July 29, 2011 release date. I find that Farrell’s character looks very Les Grossman like which is a good and bad thing because I see him cussing a lot, raising some hell and being a downright asshole.
On the Machete front it seems as if director Robert Rodriguez is once again utilizing the Grindhouse aesthetic to promote the upcoming zany thriller film. Here (via Movieweb), we have old fashion lobby card pics featuring Michelle Rodriguez and Robert De Niro.
Machete is based on the “fake” trailer in Robert Rodriguez’s 2007 Grindhouse, featuring Danny Trejo and Jeff Fahey reprising their original roles.
