Beating Schrader’s Hardcore to the punch by a matter of months, Robin Spry’s grim and gritty gutter-level drama is driven by a not-dissimilar premise, that of a man searching the seedy urban underbelly for his drug-addicted prostitute daughter. Rather astonishing that it was made for TV – the remarkably bleak opening indicates that no punches are going to be pulled, as we first see Peter Brennan (Don Francks), before the credits have even finished rolling, nodding out in a grimy cafe toilet, the needle still sticking out of his arm. This is followed by howling hospital cold turkey, as a borderline sadistic cop plays Peter a slide show of a drug-addicted girl forced into sex work, before revealing that said girl is Peter’s own daughter. We then get to see said slide show again in harrowing close-up, while Peter wails ever louder. So, once recovered, and with regular...

Breaking Bad is back with a vengeance, and the premiere, along with several other great episodes of television this week, made this our longest podcast yet. First we take a look at the comedies, including the Make Kate Watch Stuff winner, Melissa & Joey, and the season one finale of Moone Boy. Then we talk Sytycd in our reality segment, and finally we go through a full week of drama, including the pilots for The White Queen and Low Winter Sun and the premiere of Strike Back: Shadow Warfare. Then the spotlight section makes its triumphant return with the midseason premiere of Breaking Bad and afterward, we welcome returning guest Stephanie Smith of PotentialCast, RedemptionCast, and What’s On with Steph and Des back to the DVD Shelf to help us puzzle out the little known Canadian sci-fi series Charlie Jade.

I confess that on days when I’m working at home, I sometimes keep CNN on in the background if there isn’t something compelling for the background on Sci Fi. (I have no idea Wtf Charlie Jade is, and there’s no cute guys in it, so I’m on CNN this afternoon.) But dear Edward R. Murrow in heaven, CNN’s afternoon anchor Rick Sanchez makes me want to commit felonious homicide. If he came onto my TV and explained how awful it is to roast kittens and gobble them up as tasty hors d’oeuvres, I wouldn’t believe that he means it. There’s a disgusting glee with which he approaches even the most awful news stories that turns my stomach... and an awful glee with which he (or his producers, or maybe all of them in concert) choose the stories to cover. In the space of mere moments just now,...

I want to thank whomever from the SciFi Channel reads my column. Back in August, I said: "SciFi Channel ... could you please go ahead and run 'Haunted' in the same way as 'Charlie Jade'?" For those who don't know, "Haunted" was a short-lived Upn program that starred Matthew Fox of "Lost" fame. The network has twice aired the first two episodes, but pulled it from their schedule once they aired. Replace "Charlie Jade" with "Haunted" at 3 a.m., and I'll be happy. Well, SciFi did me one better, and will run most of the episodes from the show in a daytime block on Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. My recorder is ready, so thank you, SciFi Channel! Since the new 2008-09 season is significantly underway, I thought I was give my first impressions of the genre shows that have returned or ...

This column contains Moderate Spoilers for the BBC series, "Primeval." First things first ... I want to again mention that "Charlie Jade" continues to be shown on the SciFi Channel. The bad news is that it is running Tuesdays at 3 a.m. The reason I mention it is that I keep running into people who liked the show but didn't know it was still airing. So, you have been notified! SciFi Channel, I have a related request ... if you did this for "Charlie Jade," could you please go ahead and run "Haunted" in the same way? For those who don't know, "Haunted" was a short-lived Upn program that starred Matthew Fox of "Lost" fame. Imaginarium taps fund for 'Fringe' benefit
South African production house the Imaginarium has two new projects to be partly financed by its Saffco Fund 55. The Imaginarium head Izidore Codron (Hotel Rwanda, Man to Man) said the fund -- a draw down fund that will provide 55% of a film's funding so long as the money is spent in South Africa -- will finance The Fringe, a $4 million coming-of-age movie about a female South African hip hop group's rags-to-riches rise. The movie is in pre-production to start shooting in South Africa in September. Leading the mostly local cast is Michael Filipowich (Charlie Jade). Additional funding is being provided by several private equity investors.
