Richard Linklater's commitment to indie filmmaking has to be commended. The director behind major hits like 2023's Hit Man, A Scanner Darkly, and School of Rock is one of the defining indie filmmakers, notable for directing Slacker, Dazed and Confused, and many, many more. His next project, Nouvelle Vague, takes him back to his low-budget roots. But, the film's "indie" label has been put into question, as the film was recently acquired by the biggest streaming platform around: Netflix.
Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater's newest film, recently held its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and opened to strong reviews and reactions from critics. At the festival, the film also secured a distributor, but long-time fans of the director might be upset about the choice of studio. Netflix has purchased the distribution rights to Nouvelle Vague for a reported $4 million. The film won't be Linklater's first collaboration with Netflix,...

Exclusive: Netflix has won out in a tug of war for Richard Linklater’s Breathless homage Nouvelle Vague after its Cannes Film Festival debut in the competition.
We understand the deal has closed for a hefty $4 million, a record domestic outlay for a French-language movie.
This is an interesting one. Breathless is viewed as a cinema classic and Nouvelle Vague a love letter to cinema. Could there be longer theatrical play either in the U.S. or overseas before it hits Netflix? At least domestically, we hear it’s likely to just be the usual awards-qualifying two-week window.
Nouvelle Vague launched to warm words at the Cannes Film Festival two weekends ago. In the right hands, the talk has been that the film could figure in the awards race.

Multiple domestic buyers are in the mix to buy Richard Linklater’s Breathless homage, Nouvelle Vague, which launched to warm words at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.
We expect a deal to get done in the next 48 hours and it should be at the higher end for a U.S. acquisition of a French-language movie. In the right hands, there’s talk the film could figure in the awards race.
The film reconstructs the story behind Godard’s cinema classic. French actor Guillaume Marbeck portrays Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch plays Jean Seberg and newcomer Aubry Dullin portrays Jean Paul Belmondo. Characters in the movie include cinema legends Godard, Jean Cocteau, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville, Eric Rohmer, Agnes Varda and Jacques Rivette.

“If you do it long enough, I always thought you can make one film about making films. This is mine,” said Richard Linklater at the Cannes press conference for his latest film Nouvelle Vague, a love letter to French New Wave.
Nouvelle Vague tells the story of the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. Shot on film in the 4:3 aspect ratio and told entirely in French, it stars Guillaume Marbeck as Godard, Zoey Deutch as Godard’s star Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. Breathless, considered on of seminal film of the Frenc New Wave, follows Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a small-time criminal on the run after killing a policeman, and his romantic entanglement with Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg), an American journalism student in Paris.

This is Cannes Film Festival’s third invite (second time competition) to veteran American indie filmmaker Richard Linklater. Oddly his first visit was almost two decades back and he came packing a pair of films – Fast Food Nation and A Scanner Darkly (Un Certain Regard selection). Flash-forward to another double year where Blue Moon premiered earlier this year at the Berlinale (read ★★★★ review) and now we have Nouvelle Vague. How will his narrative structure, naturalistic dialogue, and exploration of human connection be applied here?

It’s hard to imagine an American indie movie more suitable for a Cannes red-carpet premiere than Richard Linklater‘s Nouvelle Vague. The maverick director’s black-and-white love letter to the French New Wave premiered to a rapturous response Saturday night inside Cannes’ Palais des Festivals, drawing a 10-minute-plus standing ovation from the black-tie crowd.
“Cinema is magic,” Linklater said as the house lights came up inside the cinema and the applause finally began to dwindle.
The standing ovation even got started before the lights came on as the crowd began clapping in unison for Linklater’s moving tribute to French cinema.
Going into the night, there was considerable anticipation surrounding Linklater’s 23rd feature. The film wasn’t screened for critics in advance of the premiere, as the director was said to prefer that it be seen for the first time on the big screen at its French unveiling.

The official synopsis for Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague describes it as “the story of Godard making Breathless, told in the style and spirit in which Godard made Breathless.”
It’s a catchy pitch but also a bit deceiving. Godard’s 1960 film broke all sorts of narrative and stylistic conventions, writing its own rules about what a movie could do and paving the way for modern cinema as we know it. Linklater’s charming and well-researched homage is much more traditional: Told in a linear fashion, shot with a sizeable crew, featuring actors who look and act like the famous people they’re playing, relying on tons of VFX shots to recreate Paris at the time, it’s a far cry from the style of Godard. And yet it does an impressive job capturing the spirit of the man at work, highlighting what it took — and often didn’t take...

A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.
While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. He played the iconic superspy in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, stepping into the role after the two-movie tenure...

“One more time: animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is film,” Guillermo del Toro said last year. IndieWire couldn’t agree more, and yet animation — an art form that requires the most precise control of the cinematic medium — is continually disrespected.
Infamously, 2022’s Best Animated Oscars presentation featured several jokes about the nominees that, in the words of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, framed “the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure.” The directing duo called upon the Academy to do better by animation. And this year’s ceremony largely delivered, with less jokes that belittled animation as kiddy stuff and a sterling speech from del Toro himself for his acclaimed stop-motion feature adaptation of “Pinocchio.”
Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants.

What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

Keanu Reeves is one of the most extraordinary movie stars of the past several decades, as he has managed to earn both legitimate praise and ironic appreciation. Although he began appearing in heartthrob roles just as the “Brat Pack” era began its decline, Reeves would become one of the definitive action stars of his generation alongside Tom Cruise and Wesley Snipes. In between his major sequels, Reeves still found a way to take on ambitious projects from acclaimed filmmakers, such as Taylor Hackford’s unusual legal thriller “The Devil’s Advocate” and Nancy Meyers’ charming romantic-comedy “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Despite facing a brief recess in his career after a series of critical disappointments in the first half of the 21st century, Reeves launched a major comeback when the “John Wick” franchise gave him another opportunity to show his merits as an action star. January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

Beloved, breathtaking actor Keanu Reeves has revealed the bizarre reason why he was forced to star in one of his most critically panned movies. While Reeves has carved out a legacy as a cinematic hero thanks to roles in the likes of The Matrix and John Wick, the 2000 thriller The Watcher instead puts Reeves in the role of a villain in this tale of a depraved serial killer and the FBI agent on his tail. The role of a killer seems ill-fitting for Reeves, and the actor admits to having never found the script interesting. So why did he end up starring in this thriller with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 11%? Well, because his so-called friend forged his signature.
I never found the script interesting, but a friend of mine forged my signature on the agreement. I couldnt prove he did and I didnt want to get sued, so I...

There’s a saying that “matches are made in heaven” However, if Francis Ford Coppola makes one here on earth who would even think of denying it? Such was the case of Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves who played Mina and Jonathan Harker in Coppola’s 1992 Gothic horror “Dracula”. In an interview relating to her recent appearance in the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Ryder revealed that Keanu and she still call each other husband and wife to this day.

There are completely legal marriages that aren’t nearly as strong as the possibly, potentially real one Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves entered into while filming Dracula. Ever since a real Romanian priest was used during their wedding scene in the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola film, the pair have continued to honor the union with a wholesome text tradition.
“We always say who it is, even though it says it on the text,” Ryder shared during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “So, like, on his birthday, I go: ‘Happy birthday,...

Winona Ryder revealed on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that she and Keanu Reeves call each other husband and wife in their text messages, over three decades after they were maybe married for real on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula.”
The two actors played Jonathan and Mina Harker in the 1992 gothic horror film, and they revealed during the 2018 press tour for their romantic-comedy “Destination Wedding” that real priests were used during the filming of their “Dracula” wedding scene. So yes, Ryder and Reeves might be husband and wife and they’ve rolled with it ever since.
“I would literally do anything though with him. Like he is so special,” Ryder said about working with Reeves, although she clarified that doing a “John Wick” movie might not be for her because it “involves a lot of stunts. I’m just thinking of my bones.”

In 2006, director Richard Linklater made his first foray into science fiction with a film adaptation of "A Scanner Darkly," the 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick. Dick's original story delved deeply -- and with first-hand knowledge -- into the bleak world of drug addicts. Dick has spoken frankly about his drug use, and one can see his paranoia caused by psychedelic drug experiences influencing his work, specifically in novels like "Valis" and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer," but they are most explicit in "A Scanner Darkly." In the future of the novel, the protagonist is addicted to a hallucinogen called Substance D, and there seems to be no workable social system in place that is capable of solving widespread drug use in America.
Linklater's film version of "A Scanner Darkly" was made 29 years after Dick's story was published, but the themes remained depressingly relevant. The film takes place in the future...

Over the years, Keanu Reeves has made quite a name for himself. He has starred in several different films and has played three iconic characters, ranging from DC’s John Constantine to The Matrix’s Neo and the beloved mass-murdering assassin, John Wick. Despite all his success, his image and reputation have not been spared criticism.

Even though he has been a part of several genres throughout his career, many have been critical of his range as an actor, pointing out that all of his characters lack a certain depth and seem very surface-level. Even though he has diversified his acting portfolio quite a lot to outrun this, it seems to have followed him unrelentingly.
However, he continues to have some of the most dedicated and passionate fans in Hollywood, and Richard Linklater seems to have the perfect theory for why this is the case.

It goes without saying that Keanu Reeves is one of the nicest blokes in Hollywood. Since his debut in showbiz back in the late ’80s, there have been several stories about The Matrix star being an upstanding dude, and the consensus isn’t looking to change anytime soon if ever.
Winona Ryder, who shares a long history with Reeves and even is married in the eyes of the Romanian church, recalled one such story about the actor. During their time together on Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, Ryder revealed Reeves went against the director’s request to protect her.

A Scanner Darkly is a 2006 science fiction film directed by Richard Linklater, based on the 1977 novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. One of the key techniques used in A Scanner Darkly is rotoscoping, a process that involves tracing live-action film frames into animation. The film's visual style may not have aged well, and the film's focus on dialogue and character development may not have resonated with audiences.

Hit Man's success redeems Linklater's previous film Bernie, proving his range as a director. Both movies are based on articles by Skip Hollandsworth, showcasing unique and dark storytelling. Despite critical acclaim, Bernie failed to find a mainstream audience, unlike the more successful Hit Man.
Netflixs Glen Powell star vehicle Hit Man is a major success and the new hit has redeemed a surprisingly similar movie that arrived to little fanfare some 13 years ago. Richard Linklater has had an interesting career, to say the least. While fellow 90s independent directors like Gus Van Sant and Larry Clark largely turned their back on the mainstream, a look back on Richard Linklaters best movies proves that he never stopped moving between ambitious indie efforts and more accessible fare. For every School of Rock that Linklater directed, there is a project like A Scanner Darkly.
This makes the success of Glen Powells Hit Man all the more impressive.

At the heart of Richard Linklater's last film, Hit Man, is Glen Powell's performance as Gary Johnson. Gary, a real-world individual whose career is detailed in a Texas Monthly piece by Skip Hollandsworth -- the same writer-editor whose article on Bernhardt "Bernie" Tiede became Linklater's much-acclaimed Bernie -- was a "mild-mannered" community college professor in Houston, Texas, who had the extraordinary side hustle of being a hit man, or at least pretending to be one, aiding police in catching individuals looking for extralegal methods of problem handling. Donning various disguises, Gary would facilitate one-on-one meetings with his would-be employers. All the while, the recorded conversations would be a strategic attempt on Gary's part to hear the magic words that could lead to an arrest.

Linklater's filmography spans iconic modern classics, including Dazed and Confused and Boyhood, inspiring filmmakers for decades. Hit Man showcases Linklater's genius, offering a love story with Powell's challenging role and sharp writing that defies expectations. From groundbreaking animations like A Scanner Darkly to romantic masterpieces like Before Midnight, Linklater's diverse work continues to captivate audiences.

The director and writer of many landmark pieces of modern cinema, such as the cinematic classics Dazed and Confused, the Before trilogy, Boyhood, and Everybody Wants Some!!, his first collaboration with Powell. Born in Texas, Richard Linklater developed a love for cinema in his early twenties.

How often do you see a film that doesn’t put a foot wrong? I’m talking about Richard Linklater’s Hit Man here, which is, by far, the most exciting film that I’ve seen in recent times. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that there’s not a single dull second in this dark comedy, which is co-produced and co-written by Glenn Powell, who also aces the title role. Even though it seems like the part is tailor-made for a certain Ryan Gosling, Powell makes it his own and hits it out of the park. What further helps is his stunning chemistry with Adria Arjona, who plays Madison. While the story, which is loosely based on the life of fake hitman Gary Johnson, is not particularly hard to follow, Linklater puts a philosophical spin on it, which only enhances the whole thing. The director’s signature style of deftly written,...

It’s generally understood that science fiction stories say more about the moment in which they were written than the future that they dare to imagine. That’s why it doesn’t matter that we’re long past the original setting of futuristic classics like Blade Runner or even Back to the Future Part II, as these stories remain fascinating precisely because of their dated perspectives on the future.
Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t a handful of technological prophets out there who can tap into universal fears and anxieties that continue to be relevant no matter how far our species marches into the future. A great example of this is Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel A Scanner Darkly, a timeless autobiographical parable about paranoia and America’s war on drugs disguised as a sci-fi novel.

Once upon a time, I believed any completed movie that found release was a minor miracle. After enduring Harmony Korine’s infrared-only Aggro Dr1ft (written in “leetspeak”), the first production under the filmmaker’s new boundary-pushing “multimedia design collective” Edglrd, that mantra is shattered. This movie is theatrical imprisonment. Its duration? A life sentence. Aggro Dr1ft is an 80-minute music video masquerading as a provocative and startlingly stylized action flick that’s devoid of any provocation, groundbreaking style, or on-screen action.
Aggro Dr1ft follows a downtrodden Miami-based mercenary, Bo (Jordi Mollà), who wishes to vanquish a demonic crimelord and become a stay-at-home family man. It’s a crayon-box blur of fuchsia skies and lavender skin tones, paintball-masked mini militias mean-mugging on yachts with hot tubs, mumbled dialogue lost underneath Edm tracks, and robotic performances so unintelligible you’d think you’re being pranked. Travis Scott randomly appears as a next-generation assassin,...

The Matrix was a groundbreaking film for many reasons, as its breathtaking bullet time visual aesthetic, allusions to Greek philosophy, stylistic similarities to Japanese animation, and anti-Capitalist themes made it a breath of fresh air within the science fiction genre. However, its impossible to address the films legacy without mentioning the brilliant performance by Keanu Reeves as Neo. Reeves physically demanding, earnest role added emotion to the action-packed series, ensuring that audiences would be engaged in the continuation of Neos story in the films sequels. However, it wasnt the only iconic science fiction role he took on; after The Matrix, Reeves co-starred in the trippy sci-fi thriller A Scanner Darkly from director Richard Linklater.

Tech noirs blend sci-fi technology with film noir's moral ambiguity, exploring societal issues in a futuristic setting. Directors like Ridley Scott and James Cameron shaped the tech noir genre, leading to masterpieces like Blade Runner and The Terminator. Films like Strange Days, A Scanner Darkly, and Minority Report delve into themes of prejudice, surveillance, and free will in dystopian worlds.
From Blade Runner to The Terminator to Ghost in the Shell, some of the greatest science fiction movies of all time belong to the fan-favorite “tech noir” subgenre. Tech noirs combine the futuristic technology of science fiction with the moral ambiguity of film noir. They often have a neon-drenched aesthetic, an intriguing mystery, and an ethically questionable antihero at the center of their storylines. Tech noirs give filmmakers an opportunity to explore societal issues from the present day, like human identity, technocracy, and the dangers of artificial intelligence, in a speculative sci-fi setting.

Keanu Reeves' highest-grossing movie is Toy Story 4, making over $1 billion at the box office. The Matrix Reloaded was Reeves' previous highest-grossing film, earning $741 million worldwide. If Reeves wants to break his box office record, his best chance is to return for Toy Story 5.
Keanu Reeves has plenty of massively successful movies at the box office, but it was his first animated movie that set a new precedent. Considering he rose to prominence thanks to a variety of action movie roles during the 90s, it is no surprise that most of Keanu Reeves' biggest box office hits come from that genre. Whether it was the success of the original Matrix trilogy through the early 2000s or the massive popularity of the John Wick franchise during the 2010s and 2020s, there is plenty of evidence that audiences want to see Keanu in big action movies.

Recently, a Polish film was released that created a sensation in its home country. From the breathtaking visuals to the story behind its conception, The Peasants is as much of a work of art as any film before it. Sony Pictures Classics certainly thinks so, and they want you to see it. For many people, movies have become so similar and pedestrian that they beg for something new to come along and save cinema. The good thing is that this happens more often than we actually admit. The Peasants may be the latest to do so.

Robert Downey, Jr. has been frank and forthcoming about his prolonged struggles with substance addiction. For many years, the actor abused cocaine and heroin, all while balancing an exciting career as one of his generation's best actors. Downey opened up, as in other places, on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," talking about how the most difficult part of giving up drugs was the resolute decision to do so. Ever since, Downey has remained clean, and, thanks to the 2008 film "Iron Man" become one of the world's wealthiest and most recognizable movie stars. Also in 2008, Downey appeared in the film "Tropic Thunder" as an intensely devoted prima donna actor who surgically changed his race (!) to play a role. He was nominated for an Academy Award.

The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.
