It’s hard to imagine an American indie movie more suitable for a Cannes red-carpet premiere than Richard Linklater‘s Nouvelle Vague. The maverick director’s black-and-white love letter to the French New Wave premiered to a rapturous response Saturday night inside Cannes’ Palais des Festivals, drawing a 10-minute-plus standing ovation from the black-tie crowd.

“Cinema is magic,” Linklater said as the house lights came up inside the cinema and the applause finally began to dwindle.

The standing ovation even got started before the lights came on as the crowd began clapping in unison for Linklater’s moving tribute to French cinema.

Going into the night, there was considerable anticipation surrounding Linklater’s 23rd feature. The film wasn’t screened for critics in advance of the premiere, as the director was said to prefer that it be seen for the first time on the big screen at its French unveiling.

The official synopsis for Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague describes it as “the story of Godard making Breathless, told in the style and spirit in which Godard made Breathless.”

It’s a catchy pitch but also a bit deceiving. Godard’s 1960 film broke all sorts of narrative and stylistic conventions, writing its own rules about what a movie could do and paving the way for modern cinema as we know it. Linklater’s charming and well-researched homage is much more traditional: Told in a linear fashion, shot with a sizeable crew, featuring actors who look and act like the famous people they’re playing, relying on tons of VFX shots to recreate Paris at the time, it’s a far cry from the style of Godard. Exclusive: Richard Linklater’s Cannes Competition-bound Nouvelle Vague, his homage to Jean-Luc Godard’s 1959 New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle (Breathless), has been boarded for international sales by Vincent Maraval’s Goodfellas.

The anticipated French-language film reconstructs the story behind Godard’s cinema classic and is a fitting addition this morning to the Cannes lineup.

Characters in the film are understood to include cinema legends Godard, Jean Cocteau, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville, Eric Rohmer, Agnes Varda and Jacques Rivette.

One of the most haunting science fiction movies in the repertoire of The Matrix star Keanu Reeves has found a new streaming home, and is all set to disturb audiences accordingly. Released back in 2006, A Scanner Darkly transforms the 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick into a warped, ethereal journey through the broken mind of Reeves drug addict as he attempts to navigate a dystopian nightmare.

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Linklater, A Scanner Darkly features an all-star cast alongside Reeves, including Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder. In the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, who as an adult, is still haunted by experiences earlier in life with the mischievous ghost, Betelgeuse. With rebellious teenage daughter Astrid in tow, Lydia finds that a portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened once again.

A muse of Burton’s, who in addition to Beetlejuice, starred in his prior films Frankenweenie and Edward Scissorhands, Ryder’s co-stars in the sequel include Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O’Hara. Following the film’s launch on opening night of the Venice Film Festival, it went on to the second-best September opening in history at $110 million, also registering as Burton’s second highest-grossing film ever, on the domestic front.

The film marks Australian director Croghan’s return to features after a 25-year absence. The director first made waves in 1996 with debut Love And Other Catastrophes, which garnered five Australian Film Institute award nominations and was picked up by Fox Searchlight.

She followed that up in 1999 with Strange Planet, starring Naomi Watts, but has only returned since then to direct a segment of music documentary I’m Only Looking: The Best of Inxs back in 2004.

Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer, will produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 2024 Governors Awards, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s sixth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th editions.

At the 15th Governors Awards, which will take place in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, Nov. 17, Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor will receive honorary Oscars; Richard Curtis will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; and Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

Dick's original story delved deeply -- and with first-hand knowledge -- into the bleak world of drug addicts. Dick has spoken frankly about his drug use, and one can see his paranoia caused by psychedelic drug experiences influencing his work, specifically in novels like "Valis" and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer," but they are most explicit in "A Scanner Darkly." Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer (Michael Clayton), will produce the next Governors Awards ceremony for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s fifth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th editions.

The 14th Governors Awards will take place on Jan. 9 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. Honorary Awards will be presented to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.

“Producing the Academy’s Governors Awards for the fifth time and helping kick off another Oscar season is an absolute honor,” Fox said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to a memorable night paying tribute to this year’s exceptional honorees.”

Yang stated, “We are delighted to welcome Jennifer back as our producer for the Governors Awards.

Robert Downey Jr. will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 39th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 9.

The award is named after the film historian Leonard Maltin, who will lead an in-person discussion with Downey Jr. at the festival, where they will dig into the actor’s long career, including, of course, his turn in “Oppenheimer” as Lewis Strauss, the title character’s nemesis who tries to orchestrate his downfall.

“Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan said in a statement, “It’s thrilling to see audiences responding not just to Robert Downey Jr’s incredible charisma, but to a performance which, stripped of any movie star trappings, shows once again that he is one of the greatest actors.”
