Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy team up with Scott Derrickson for an ambitious, enjoyable thriller. So why isn’t The Gorge being advertised anywhere?
The trailer for The Gorge, Scott Derrickson’s latest genre-bending film, doesn’t really tell the whole story. It shows Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characters, highly skilled mercenaries, assigned to watch over the titular gorge, where something spooky lurks. Naturally, the two fall in love and the trailer sells The Gorge as a strange action-romance hybrid, but the reality is much more complex.
Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre with films like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and The Black Phone, the latter receiving a sequel later this year. While the aforementioned promo for The Gorge doesn’t exactly market the film as a horror, it quickly becomes one, and a good one, too.

Debuting on Apple TV+ on February 14 is director Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge, starring Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver.
Two highly-trained operatives (Teller and Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.
In a recent interview Derrickson said The Gorge is much like Until Dawn and Silent Hill, “I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gunplay action, especially if you’re really with a single character or two characters,...

Up to this point, filmmaker Scott Derrickson has been primarily known for his horror output. Movies like “Sinister,” “The Black Phone,” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” make clear that the writer/director has a knack for the genre. While on the surface, his newest feature, “The Gorge,” sounds like just another scary flick to add to his resume, there’s actually more to the upcoming feature than scares and suspense, as he stressed in a recent article for IGN.

After being an executive producer on the BET+ supernatural horror film The Reading, Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels decided to try his hand at making his own horror flick. That horror movie is The Deliverance, which has just been released on Netflix after a limited theatrical release.
Like The Reading, The Deliverance is a supernatural horror film. It was helmed by Daniels from a screenplay co-written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. It's inspired by the horrifying true story of Latoya Ammons, a single mother who claimed that she and her family had experienced a series of supernatural experiences in their Gary, Indiana, home.
In The Deliverance, we follow Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother trying to make ends meet. In search of a fresh start, Ebony moves her family into a new home in Pittsburgh. However, shortly after moving in, the family begins to experience strange, demonic occurrences. These increasingly...

And we’re back. We’re back to possession and we are back to it being heavy on the religious side and everything purported to be a true story. This time we are looking a little deeper into the legal implications of what happens when someone is injured or even dies during an exorcism, sanctioned or not. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (watch it Here) was a massive commercial hit and garnered middle of the pack reviews when it came out in 2005. 2005 was not a banner year for horror and it was different from the slew of remakes as well as setting itself apart from nearly everything else that came out that year. While The Asylum, known for schlock takes on popular products, would release their version of the true story in 2011 and German film Requiem would come out to far better acclaim the next year, Emily Rose would be...

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Many successful comic book movie directors actually started out in the horror genre, showcasing their skills in creating dark and supernatural stories. Directors like Zack Snyder, James Gunn and Scott Derrickson transitioned from horror to comic book movies, proving that there are transferable skills between the two genres. The ability to effectively blend comedy and horror, as seen in the films of directors like Ruben Fleischer, can contribute to the success of comic book adaptations.
Many directors of comic book movies in the MCU, the Dcu, and beyond actually started out by making much darker films in the horror genre. Since the beginning of the 21st Century, comic book movies have become one of cinema's most popular and successful genres. The movies of the MCU have thoroughly dominated the box office, establishing the most successful franchise in cinematic history with a large shared universe of movies and TV shows adapted from comic book source material.

Ever since the first Exorcist movie, we’ve been bombarded by religious horror with similar iconography, symbols, and ideas. Sister Death is a unique film that doesn’t quite fit the bill perfectly, but that makes it all the more powerful due to its unpredictable nature. The slow-burn film is not like others in the same genre, but it still uses similar visuals to propel the story, which in its own way makes it a little uninteresting. Sister Death tells the story of Sister Narcisa, a character from the 2017 Spanish-language horror film Veronica. A young novice who doubts her status as a “holy girl” begins to find strange things when she joins a convent to teach young girls. As the story unfolds, nothing is as it seems. Burning crucifixes, suffocation, and objects falling from nowhere are all common traits of this genre that this film uses extensively. So, taking some liberties,...

The Enfield Poltergeist, directed by Jerry Rothwell, is a montage of the supernatural, science, childhood trauma, and many other aspects. This mini-documentary series pulls lightly at the strings of horror while focusing more on the scientific aspects. The events surrounding the Hodgson family and the experiences that they have had have been explored here. The intervention of Maurice Grosse, a member of the Society for Psychical Research (Spr), between 1977 and 1978 with more than 200 hours of tape recordings has been highlighted. The four-part mini-documentary series brings out a real-life infamous case of the haunting at a house in Enfield, reminding us of similar movies based on real-life stories like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror, and others. Was Maurice able to rid the Hodgsons of the torture of the poltergeist? Was Janice really possessed, or was she faking things to garner attention? Let us look into what several witnesses...

Some PG-13 horror movies contain content that arguably deserves an R rating, such as The Sixth Sense and The Ring, which feature disturbing imagery and mature themes. The intensity of movies like A Quiet Place and Drag Me to Hell, despite their lack of graphic imagery, suggests they should have been rated higher due to their adult themes and distressing conclusions. Surprisingly, even iconic horror films like Jaws, with its gruesome death scenes, and The Last Exorcism, with its chilling performances, managed to receive a PG-13 rating despite pushing the boundaries of the genre.
Not all horror films have an R rating, but there are many PG-13-rated horror movies that probably should have. The majority of horror movies are bestowed an R rating for their horrifying and adult-themed content. However, a range of movies escaped with only a PG-13 rating despite arguably deserving higher.
There are several great horror movies with a PG-13 rating.

Thanks to Netflix, every week another bygone movie flickers into our consciousness like some long-forgotten dream, lingers momentarily, then fades into the recesses of our collective memory. It's like our cultural life is flashing before our eyes before we all tumble into oblivion... Anyway, while we're on the theme of existential horror, this week we've got a scary movie for you that's winning over the Netflix crowd.
"Deliver Us from Evil" is a 2014 horror effort from director Scott Derrickson, of "The Black Phone," "Doctor Strange," and "Sinister" fame. "The Black Phone" is, of course, one of the best Joe Hill adaptations, and "Sinister" is the scariest movie ever, according to science. So, you might expect "Deliver Us From Evil" to be quite good if you've yet to see it. Alas, perhaps it's the lack of involvement from Derrickson's longtime writing partner C. Robert Cargill, who lent his talents to "Sinister,...

Deliver Us From Evil is a horror film directed by Scott Derrickson, featuring real-life characters involved in demonic encounters. The cast of the film includes Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn, and Joel McHale, who have all continued to have successful careers. While the movie had mixed reviews, the performances of the cast have stood the test of time, and the film remains a box-office success.
Deliver Us From Evil found Sinister and The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson revisiting the horror genre, supported by a talented cast playing real-life characters. Years after the success of his first theatrical feature The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Derrickson chose to revisit the exorcism subgenre with another fact-based story. This time, the focus lay on Ralph Sarchie, a former NYPD Sergeant who questioned his own faith after apparently witnessing demonic occurrences all across the city. Dedicating his life to traditionalist Catholic demonology later,...

Even after moving up a week to escape the all-consuming drawing power of Taylor Swift, “The Exorcist: Believer” is thus far holding its own as the key new wide release this weekend. The $30 million-budgeted legacy sequel to the late William Friedkin’s 50-year-old Oscar-nominated blockbuster earned $2.85 million in Thursday preview showings. Barring massive frontloading or unexpected legs, that positions the film for a domestic debut weekend between $25 million and $30 million.
While the film itself cost a reasonable (if high for Blumhouse) $30 million, the overall package deal to nab the rights to the IP went for $400 million. That deal, made in the summer of 2021, seemed to be a byproduct of Netflix throwing around money like it was tissue paper.
Comcast was arguably making a show of saying that it too would spend and spend big on potentially big-deal IP. Recall that Netflix had just spent $450 million on acquiring and producing the...

The Stephen King adaptation The Breathing Method has received a development update. Director Scott Derrickson, previously attached to the project, is no longer involved. The current status and rights of the movie are unknown. The production history of The Breathing Method spans from 2012 to the present. Both Derrickson and screenwriter Scott Teems had been involved at different points, but it is unclear if Teems is still attached.
The Stephen King adaptation The Breathing Method has gotten a grim development update. The movie, which was previously with director Scott Derrickson attached, is an adaptation of the King novella of the same name, originally published as part of the 1982 collection Different Seasons. The story follows a woman in the 1930s who is desperately protective of her unborn child, who was conceived out of wedlock, so much so that her "breathing method" for helping birth the child keeps her lungs moving even after...

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson recently reaffirmed that he exited the movie's sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, over creative differences and that there is "no bad blood" between him and Marvel Studios over the decision.
In an interview with The Playlist's The Discourse podcast, Derrickson confirmed that he left Multiverse of Madness because he had a different vision for the follow-up to the 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Doctor Strange. "All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth," explained Derrickson. "We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than–it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. The sequels — or, in two cases, prequels — to “The Exorcist” have all been unqualified turkeys. There is now a movement at hand to declare that John Boorman’s crackpot insect-swarm fantasia “Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) was some sort of misunderstood masterpiece, but that’s an act of revisionism every bit as loony tunes as “Heaven’s Gate” revisionism.
That said, the “Exorcist” genre has never left the culture. It has spawned successful pieces of claptrap, like “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005), whose opening-weekend gross of $30 million in the dead zone of early September was more shocking than anything in the film. Fifty years ago, the very essence of William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” was its obscenely eruptive, pea-soup-in-the-face, borderline-demonic-child-porn shock value. The film marked nothing less than the birth of extreme culture, and we’ve never looked back. It also influenced the rise of the Evangelical movement, since if Satan was now in our face,...

Director Scott Derrickson hints that a sequel to The Black Phone is possible, but only if Ethan Hawke reprises his role as the terrifying villain. The Black Phone was both a commercial success and critically acclaimed, with praise for Hawke's portrayal of the depraved villain. While not a sequel, Derrickson's upcoming project, V/H/S/85, includes a subtle crossover reference to The Black Phone, connecting the two stories in the same universe.
The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson says a sequel to the film is possible, but there is one condition. The 2021 supernatural horror starred Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, a mask-wearing child abductor and killer living in Denver in the 1970s. Derrickson believes a sequel would only be worthwhile with Hawke's reprisal of the film's terrifying villain. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the director spoke on the possibility of revisiting the story:

There are a surprising amount of horror movies based on true stories that have elevated the genre and showcased the deepest annals of human depravity, but there are also a fair few whose true stories are scarier than the actual movie. When a film is adapted from a true story it adds a different layer to the overall narrative, usually sending audiences directly to the internet after viewing to see how the two tales compare. True story adaptations have a greater capacity to tug at the heartstrings and elicit greater emotional reactions from audiences, as the characters seen on the screen aren't just creations of Hollywood going through made-up events.
When it comes to some of the best horror movies based on true stories, the possibility of garnering a strong emotional reaction from viewers is much more probable. Characters in horror movies are usually the victims of heinous violence and other depraved acts,...

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has come out against the deal the Directors Guild of America (DGA) recently negotiated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
In a statement shared on Twitter, Derrickson wrote, "I love the DGA — they have protected me during some of the most difficult situations of my career. However, I am voting No on the ratification of this contract because the time to go after transparency in domestic streaming data is now. It is ludicrous that we don’t get to know how many people are actually viewing our work — or how much revenue it generates. This information is consequential to our lives, yet the NegCom (per their own admission) did not even attempt to get us honest answers in this area — a decision that does DGA members a grave disservice."

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeding all expectations over Easter weekend, it’s likely to be the #1 movie this weekend and maybe one or two more after that. Undaunted, four studios studios are releasing movies that will try to bring in business despite the overwhelming success and popularity of Universal’s animated movie.
In fact, Universal will be making a play for the top two spots this weekend with its latest horror-comedy “Renfield,” which comes from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman‘s Skybound Entertainment with Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie”) at the helm. It stars Nicholas Hoult (“The Favourite”) as the title character, henchman to the legendary vampire Count Dracula, as played by Nicolas Cage. Akwafina, Ben Schwartz and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo all have key roles, as well.

Before 2012, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t think it was possible for filmmaker Scott Derrickson to become a master of the horror genre. He’d had three directorial credits to his name up until that point: the forgettable Hellraiser sequel, Inferno, the mediocre horror-courtroom drama The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and the unfortunate The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. While surely a competent director, it’s safe to say no one was necessarily clamoring for the next Scott Derrickson feature. That all changed in October of 2012 with the release of Sinister, a genuinely disturbing low-budget horror effort that remains one of the creepiest movies within the genre over the last ten years.
After directing Deliver Us From Evil, and a little Marvel movie called Doctor Strange, Derrickson returned to the shadows with The Black Phone, based on a short story by Joe Hill and starring newcomer Mason Thames.

In Prey For The Devil, Sister Ann tries to help a girl who has been taken over by an evil demon. Since this movie is a new take on demonic possession, it would be perfect to watch with 2005's The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Horror fans love movie marathons and it's fun to pick out which films work well together because they share the same subject matter but have different settings and approaches.
Whether comparing two teen '90s slashers or films from the past few years that focus on unsettling vacation rentals, Redditors have some great ideas for double features that would be fun to watch with friends or alone.

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Hulu is really getting into the Halloween spirit in 2022, with October bringing with it the addition of a number of great spooky titles. This month has already seen the addition of the Blade trilogy, Dark Shadows, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, not to mention the brand-new Hellraiser movie that's making waves right now. But while Hulu is bringing a whole lot of great movies and shows to its catalog in October 2022, there are also quite a few titles leaving the streaming service. Some of these are already gone while others have their days numbered. So while you're looking for something new to watch or an old favorite to rewatch, why not give this list a look for the last chance to see some great content before it leaves Hulu?...

It is Halloween season, and there is no better time to revel in the festivities than by catching a truly haunting movie. “The Possession” is the fourth entry in the dabbe series of movies which introduced the ‘Djinn’ archetype into Turkish cinema. Apart from that, it also unveiled many fresh takes on the genre that makes it truly unique and thrilling to watch. There is its highly realistic camerawork that puts you right into the action as if you were witnessing an exorcism in a claustrophobic room. And then there it is its audacity to poke at Islamic dark arts and demonic possessions, a macabre marriage that is not only taboo but also a gutsy headfirst trudge into an unspoken and unheard chapter of the horror playbook.

Director Scott Derrickson is known for jumping around different genre sandboxes. His work ranges from science fiction ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") to Marvel superheroes ("Doctor Strange"), but arguably his most effective films are those that exist within the horror sphere. After all, Derrickson's latest film, "The Black Phone," is one of 2022's biggest hits. Even though it's been well over a decade since I last saw "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," I find it difficult to shake Jennifer Carpenter's haunting performance.
If there's one film of Derrickson that gives me the creeps more than the others, it undoubtedly has to be "Sinister," which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. It's the kind of horror movie that you can't quite shake from your memory. Even a scientific test deemed "Sinister" the scariest movie ever made.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson can seemingly track his reputation as a director by what projects he was offered following any one of his movies. After writing the modest 2000 horror sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut," Derrickson had an opportunity to write and direct the newest installment in a popular film series. Sadly, "Hellraiser: Inferno" went straight to video and was not terribly well-received by "Hellraiser" fans. In 2004, Derrickson garnered a story-by credit on Wim Wenders' post-9/11 drama "Land of Plenty," which, in terms of genre, was quite the gearshift. "Landy of Plenty" never emerged as an arthouse darling and the director moved back to horror to make "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." On a budget if 19 million, that film made 145 million worldwide in 2005.
