Let’s just look at the hard numbers: Quentin Tarantino‘s new movie will need to earn $375 million worldwide to break even. Basically, it will have to be one of the biggest movies of his career (“Django Unchained” earned $425 million worldwide) so it’s arriving during the industry’s busiest window.
Sony has slated Tarantino’s still untitled new movie for August 9, 2019. The only other movies scheduled at that time are Universal’s Untitled Event Movie (any guess?) and Disney‘s “Artemis Fowl.” We’ll see if they blink, because the director’s movie is already sizing up Margot Robbie in the lead role as Sharon Tate, with Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Samuel L.

Looks like someone is really stepping up their game in the perpetual “I can nap through a movie more consistently than you” competition with Bruce Willis. Steven Seagal, who is only vaguely aware that he’s continued to make movies throughout the 21st century (including, let us never forget, his immortal role as “Cock Puncher” in The Onion Movie), is back with what appears to be his seventh (!) role in 2016, for End Of A Gun. While costar Jade Ewen seems determined to actually act, Seagal once again proves he knows better than to exert effort. Effort, after all, can lead to the heartbreak of sweat. So instead, he sleepily ambles his way through a plot involving a former DEA agent stealing two million dollars from a drug lord, and then going after the blow-dried villain when he kidnaps the woman who helped Seagal.

In case you need a reminder how flush and competitive the TV landscape is at the moment: Netflix is spending $5 billion dollars on programming this year. So, if you want to keep pace, you have to throw down some cash, and that's exactly what their rivals Amazon are doing. Today it emerged that the online retailer is backing a whole new slate of feature films. From "Transparent" creator Jill Soloway (who is already brewing a new comedy for Amazon titled "I Love Dick"), the studio is developing “Ten Aker Wood,” a coming-of-age story about a woman who leaves her failing marriage and life on a pot farm, and falls in love a biker and his lifestyle. Tamara Jenkins (“The Savages,” “Slums of Beverly Hills”) is working on the drama “Private Life” about a woman in her 40s who will do anything to have a child. Meanwhile, Barry Levinson has a...

In the following video interview, X-Men: Apocalypse producer and writer Simon Kinberg is quizzed about Archangel being one of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen, and while he refuses to give too much away in regards to which characters they'll be using, he does explain the new timeline. As it turns out, X-Men: Days of Future Past changed things so much that some characters may have been born earlier, meaning we shouldn't put too much stock in anything which happened in the original trilogy as it's all up for grabs now! In the second interview, Channing Tatum talks about the lengths he's gone to to play Gambit in an X-Men movie, claiming to have even auditioned in costume. He then shows off his impressive card throwing skills, much to the pain of the reporter interviewing him... Movie Trailers - Celebrity News Movie Trailers - Celebrity News...

On Friday morning's Fox & Friends, however, Fox News movie critic Kevin McCarthy ignored 12 Years a Slave...

While a mini-debate sort of simmers around the interwebs about "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug," and its worthiness as a standalone movie—even though it's basically a two hour, forty minute journey to open a door—The Onion gets right down to it and tells it like it is: simply put, nothing in J.R.R. Tolkien or Peter Jackson's world can even compare The Kingdoms Of Toranda. Never heard of it? That's because it's creation of The Onion movie critic Peter Rosenthal, who believes that 'Smaug' is kind of infantile when compared to the first book in his own series, "The Shattered Amulet Of The Red Warlock." As usual, this is hilarious stuff from the dudes at the comedy site, so give it a spin below. The Onion Reviews 'The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug'...

Following the unexpected 1999 Best Picture win of Miramax's John Madden-directed romantic comedy Shakespeare in Love over DreamWorks' Steven Spielberg-directed World War II drama Saving Private Ryan, New York Daily News movie critic Jack Mathews wrote an open letter to Weinstein that began with the following: "Now that the dust has settled over the Oscar that Steven Spielberg thinks you stole from him, this would seem a good time to take stock of what your extravagant Oscar campaigns of recent months and years have actually done for you, against you and to the fragile balance of blood sport in Hollywood." After stating his belief that although "Oscar nominations can be won...

The "Dark Knight Rises" trailer left the MTV News movie staff with a whole fresh set of questions: Is Robin really in the movie? Why is Bruce Wayne walking with a cane? But in a way, there was something very familiar about our state of mind after checking out the new footage.
That's because, since the beginning of the year, we've been consumed with burning questions about Christopher Nolan's third Batman film. And at every turn, we'd tried to get answers to those questions, hitting up the film's stars time and time again. Sometimes, we came away with new insights. Sometimes, answers only led to another set of queries. There's something exasperating about this whole endeavor — but also something awesome. And the movie doesn't even...

For those who think Joel McHale is playing himself on the NBC comedy "Community," consider his character, Jeff Winger. A shallow, snarky hipster who was fired from his high-powered attorney job after it was discovered he faked having a degree, Jeff is forced to enroll in community college to start a new life. He forms a study group with the sole purpose of bedding hot blonde Britta (Gillian Jacobs) and becomes the de facto leader of a group of misfits he holds in what can best be described as a kind of affectionate disdain. McHale is so effortlessly breezy and confident as Winger, it’s easy to see why people would assume he shares more than a few traits in common with his television counterpart. In real life, McHale is as clever and funny as Jeff but in a kinder, less sarcastic manner. In fact, the butt of his jokes...

When New Yorkers talk about the Middle East, it's not usually a laughing matter, but Egyptian actor and comedian Ahmed Ahmed is out to change that. In his debut film Just Like Us, he and a group of international comedians take their bold, and often controversial, brand of comedy to the Middle East. The documentary takes viewers on a hysterical journey through Dubai, Beirut, Riyadh, Cairo and finally, New York. The message is clear - we have a lot to learn about each other. Ahmed knows more than most about Arab stereotypes - his 15-year Hollywood career has included minor parts as terrorists, in Executive Decision and The Onion Movie. He has always attempted to use his comedy to break misconceptions about Arabs and Muslims (the first 10 minutes of Just Like Us are dedicated to explaining the difference between the two). With comedy tours such as One Arab, One Jew,...

Dante Harper's film CV is a varied one: editing a documentary about Static-x; directing and acting in the surrealist black comedy The Delicate Art of the Rifle; a small mountain of production manager credits, very often on DVD supplements; a little role in The Onion Movie; scripting an adaptation of Charles Burns' Black Hole. Add to this the not insignificant pay day he's just scored for a spec-script adaptation of the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill. He certainly gets around, and I'm sure he's destined for full-on cult status with a resume like that. All You Need is Kill is a hideously Engrishy-y title, don't you think? Hiroshi Sakurazaka's original novel, published in English by the Manga-maestros at Viz, is about a young soldier sent out to fight an alien menace. When he gets killed in action, a time loop repeats the day, and he fights and dies again.

When Cory McAbee’s American Astronaut debuted at Sundance in 2001 critics where all tripping over themselves to attribute superlatives to the genre-bending film whilst struggling to describe exactly what they had just seen. Having made numerous appearances at Sundance for the better part of two decades, McAbee returned earlier this year with Stingray Sam. The David Hyde Pierce narrated sixty minute feature once again baffled but delighted critics. Both features are now available exclusively at Cory McAbee’s web-site and you can also follow him on Twitter. Mr. McAbee generously donated his time to discuss his work.

Both projects are unique in that they blend genres that aren’t seen as natural fits to create whole new paradigms.

Irreverent, sports-related comedy programs don't exist, at least not on television. While series like Fox's Best Damn Sports Show Period or Espn's Pardon the Interruption can definitely be comical, they make quips about and poke fun at the wide world of sports with a measured amount of deference. The shows operate under the assumption that the subject is significant, that sports - and the people that play, coach, and watch them - are important. Yes, you could try point to something like the Sklar Brothers' defunct Cheap Seats as an exception, but nothing shows professional athletics less respect than the Onion Sports Network. It's just the kind of program that television could use to bring some balance to the medium's for-the-love-of-the-game love fest. That's why I'm all jazz hands over the recent announcement from Comedy Central. The cable network has ordered a pilot from popular satirical newspaper The Onion for a 30-minute,...

A unique Sundance Channel interview with costume designer Casey Storm — a man who has worked on films including Being John Malkovich, Zodiac and The Onion Movie — has revealed some interesting details regarding Where the Wild Things Are’s design and the process of director Spike Jonze.
Storm pretty much glows about Jonze, as would be expected (”He has an amazing ability to find people whom he admires and then ask them to do something they’ve never done before. He knows who gets his creative vision and will execute it perfectly”). The interesting details are in the specifics of Wild Things’ production:

Big Fan, originally reviewed from Sundance by Scott here at Wamg, is a movie that’s been getting a lot of praise from various critics, which made me curious as to why people have been enjoying it so much. Inherently, it’s this curiosity that has led me to see the film for myself and find out “why all the fuss?”
The film, written and directed by Robert D. Siegel, is his first directorial outing. Prior to Big Fan, Siegel has written The Onion Movie and most importantly, The Wrestler, which was one helluva great film, directed by Darren Aronofsky. So, this leads me to my first inclination… would certain films be better if they weren’t directed by the writer? After seeing Big Fan, I am inclined to believe this, in some cases, it may be true. The Wrestler would not have been as good, in theory, ifSiegel had directed it himself.

Monty Python's 1983 film "The Meaning of Life" effortlessly set the gold standard in sketch comedy movies -- which, for clarification, we'll define here as feature-length anthologies of stand-alone comic bits that don't serve to push along any overarching storyline. But while the Pythons' greatest film (gauntlet thrown down!) omitted a plot, their skits were still tied together by the most timeless of through lines: the trials of human life, presented in chapters like "The Miracle of Birth," "Middle Age" and "Death." Furthermore, 1971's "And Now For Something Completely Different," a re-filmed compilation of greatest hits from the first two pioneering seasons of "Monty Python's Flying Circus," is arguably the silver medalist of its kind, and good luck coming up with a third film that actually deserves the bronze.
The cold, hard truth is that sketch comedy movies are nearly impossible to pull off, and most are doomed to fail the test of time.

Barber adds Regency musical to list
Just call him the Music Man. Award-winning music video director Bryan Barber, who is in preproduction on a musical feature with OutKast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi for HBO, is pacting with Regency Enterprises to develop and direct another musical for the big screen. This one will find him helming a hip-hop musical inspired by what's described as a classic story, though the exact story and the details of the updated take for the multicultural project are being kept under wraps. It is known that Barber will team with music multihyphenate Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds on the soundtrack, while Edmonds' wife, Tracey, and her Edmonds Entertainment will produce. Scribe Preston Whitmore (Civil Brand, Lockdown) has been tapped to handle writing duties. At Regency, the project was brought together by Peter Cramer for production topper Sanford Panitch. The project is the first of its kind for Regency, which hasn't delved into the musical genre, sticking mostly to drama (Man on Fire), action (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Elektra) and comedy (The Onion Movie).
