A Strange Noise in the Night Leads to a Spooky Encounter in Ben S. Hyland’s Comedy Horror ‘Bleep’
Image
It’s Halloween and therefore the perfect occasion to tune into those bangs in the middle of the night, the hairs on the back of your neck standing up without reason and that disconcerting sense of being watched even when you’re alone. While all these uncanny experiences may have the majority of us calling for an exorcist, for filmmaker Ben S. Hyland and friend and co-writer Mark Brennan, the recounting of a late night disturbance for the latter led the pair into a back and forth dissection of the origins of the encounter, which soon developed into the beginnings of snappy creepy comedy short Bleep. The story of a couple who find their relationship pushed to the brink as they investigate a strange noise that’s woken them in the night, like all good horror we soon discover that things aren’t quite what they seem… A film which...

The Best Shorts From Arrow Video FrightFest 2022
Image
With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.

Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:

Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.

The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

British comedy had a banner year too,...

Armie Hammer Special Among New True Crime Slate at ID and Discovery+
Image
ID and Discovery+ announced an extensive slate of true crime specials, original series and reboots, including a special about the alleged crimes of Armie Hammer and his family.

“House of Hammer” (working title) will examine different scandals over the course of five generations of Hammer’s family. The special uses “a trove of archive and interviews from survivors and family members” to investigate “a dysfunctional dynasty with its male characters exhibiting all the devastating consequences of privilege gone wild.”

In August, ID and Discovery will debut the specials “Menendez Brothers: Misjudged?,” which considers whether the 1996 conviction of Joseph and Erik Menendez for the murders of their parents may actually be the story of two abuse victims; “Who Killed Biggie and Tupac?” (working title) with new interviews and insight about the shootings of both rappers; “Mary Kay Letourneau: Notes on a Scandal,” which revisits the story of the 34-year-old teacher who...

‘Arthur’ Creator on Ending the Beloved Series After 25 Years, Arthur’s Racial Identity and the ‘New Puzzles’ Ahead
Image
The students of Lakewood Elementary may be all grown up, but “Arthur” isn’t really ending.

The PBS Kids series, based on Marc Brown’s picture books of the same name, is the longest running animated children’s show in TV history, and on Feb. 21 aired the four episodes that comprise the 25th and final season. But at 75, Brown finds himself invigorated by possibilities that remain for his beloved aardvark, including podcasts, games and more.

Series finale “All Grown Up” looks 20 years into the future to see who Arthur and his animal pals become, an idea that emerged from one of the questions children ask Brown most frequently. Buster ends up a schoolteacher, while Francine presides over a trendy sneaker business and Muffy campaigns to become Elwood City’s newest mayor. D.W. is a traffic cop, Binky is a weatherman and George runs the Sugar Bowl, everyone’s favorite cafe.
