Corey Yuen, the Hong Kong director and cinematographer, revealed to have passed away in 2022
Image
After yesterday’s rumors and confusion, we now know that Hong Kong director and cinematographer Corey Yuen has died. Interestingly, according to the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, Yuen passed away in 2022, but the media kept his death a secret at the request of his family. While the Federation did not reveal a date of death, we know the Righting Wrongs, The Transporter, and Doa: Dead or Alive director died of complications from Covid-19. On Monday, news about Mr. Yuen’s death was revealed on Chinese-language social media by action legend Jackie Chan, who trained alongside Yuen under Sammo Hung Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu, and Yuen Biao at the Peking Opera School.

Corey Yuen started as an actor, contributing to 114 projects and playing roles in films like The Jade Raksha, Long ya Jian, Ai Nu, Brutal Boxer, and more. He worked alongside cinema’s greatest martial artists, including Chan, Michelle Yeoh,...

Corey Yuen, Hong Kong Director and Action Choreographer, Revealed to Have Died in 2022
Image
Corey Yuen, the actor, action choreographer and director of “So Close” and “Doa: Dead or Alive,” died in 2022, the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers confirmed to Variety.

Local and English-language reports say that Yuen died of Covid-19 on an undisclosed date in Hong Kong. He was born on Feb. 15, 1951 as Ying Gang-ming.

His death was initially kept private at the request of his family. But on Monday, the news was revealed on Chinese-language social media by fellow action star Jackie Chan, who paid tribute to Yuen and others in the industry who had died.

Yuen and Chan were contemporaries and trained together with Sammo Hung Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu and Yuen Biao at the Peking Opera School. Together, they were sometimes referred to as the Seven Little Fortunes or The Lucky Seven and made their mark during the heyday of Hong Kong cinema from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

‘Borderlands’ Review: Eli Roth’s Misguided Adaptation of a Classic Video Game Series
Image
In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.

As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...

Interview: Composer Tom Holkenborg on Crafting 'Mad Max' Scores
Image
"I consider myself, I call it, a 'full contact composer.' I'm not a guy that sits behind a piano with a piece of paper..." Now playing in theaters worldwide is the newest awesome George Miller post-apocalyptic action movie - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie kicks ass and so does its score. Just like with Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa features a score composed by Dutch musician Tom Holkenborg. Before getting into composing scores for movies, Holkenborg went under the moniker "Junkie Xl" and was a techno DJ and producer crafting electronica remixes and tracks galore. After achieving mega fame as Junkie Xl, he moved into composing - one of his first scores is for the video game movie Doa: Dead or Alive (2006). He later composed the scores for the sequels 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), before being hired by George Miller...

10 Action Movies From The 2000s That Deserve A Modern Remake
Image
While there were plenty of great 2000s action movies, there are also a lot of genre outings from the era that deserve a remake. Sometimes, filmmakers need to take a second shot at a story to make the premise really shine. Some movies, in spite of their failures, actually had great potential - if handled correctly.

Whether it because of a poor script, a horrible casting choice, or a creative decision that went in the wrong direction, several great movie premises were unfortunately wasted. This led to a string of bad films in the 2000s. In the cases of at least a few of these films, modern remakes could finally do their central concepts justice.

Catwoman

Batman’s on-again, off-again love interest Catwoman deserves a great movie, but 2004’s disastrous Halle Berry vehicle wasn’t it. The 2004 movie inexplicably reinvented Catwoman’s entire backstory, giving her unnecessary superpowers and wasting...

The Songs of ‘Stranger Things’: Kate Bush and More Great Needle Drops From Season Four’s First Episodes
Image
“Stranger Things” music supervisor Nora Felder could very well be hearing her name when nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards are announced on July 12.

The three-time nominee is the reason Kate Bush is currently trending on Twitter, but that’s the tip of the iceberg of Felder’s work on the show’s fourth season. This season Felder uses needle drops to root audiences deeper in the ’80s with needle-drop picks ranging from Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus” to the Beach Boys’ cover of “California Dreamin’.”

Here’s a guide to five of the best music moments from the first few episodes.

Stranger Things: Why Does Max's Favorite Song Sound So Familiar?

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4, Part 1. If you’re still mid-binge, you might want to put off reading this article.

Some Stranger Things fans will, of course, know Max’s favorite song, the one that seems to play on a loop in her headphones as of Season 4’s premiere (and, later on, proves to be beyond pivotal). It was, after all, a Top 30 smash back in 1985. Other viewers, however, will likely be hard-pressed to name that tune.

Streaming Slams Into a Wall: Netflix Woes, CNN+ Shutdown Illustrate New Economic Realities
Image
After years of companies spending like drunken sailors on streaming video, some are now suffering hangovers.

Netflix, in the first quarter of 2022, lost customers for the first time in more than a decade. It could shed 2 million more in Q2. The streaming giant is scrambling to find new sources of revenue growth, with execs hoping to monetize password-sharing freeloaders and — previously unthinkable at the Big Red N — planning to introduce advertising-supported plans.

CNN+, hailed as a bridge to the news cabler’s future, is Doa: It’s getting axed 32 days after launch under new management at Warner Bros. Discovery. The Wbd team led by CEO David Zaslav quickly decided to cut their losses with CNN+, concluding the service simply wouldn’t draw enough viewers to sustain a budget reported to be 1 billion over four years.

Taken together, the events suggest that the speculative, spend-big-at-all-costs era of streaming video is over.

Film Review: Audition (1999) by Takashi Miike
Image
“I can’t put my finger on it but there’s something wrong with her.”

When writer Tony Rayns met Japanese director for one of the first times in the 1990s, he spoke to him about his incredible output per year, which sometimes ranged somewhere between six to seven movies. According to Miike, the answer was obvious for he liked to keep himself busy with his films through the year. Additionally, rejecting a producer’s proposal, especially for an interesting idea, was something Miike could (and probably still can) not do, and in the end the people involved would find the right time and right place in his busy schedule to work everything out.

“Audition” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival

Interestingly, the year this encounter took place marks a significant milestone in Miike’s career. The Rotterdam Film Festival not only showed three of his movies – “Audition...

‘Shameless’ Alum Steve Howey to Star in ‘True Lies’ Pilot at CBS (Exclusive)
Image
Steve Howey has been cast in one of the lead roles in the CBS drama pilot based on the movie “True Lies,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Howey will star as Harry, the role played in the film by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The character is described as a benign, play-it-safe, seemingly risk-averse computer salesman and devoted family man, married with two kids. But in reality, Harry is an undercover operative, a first-class spy working for a covert U.S. Intelligence organization.

Like the film, Harry’s unfulfilled suburban wife is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she’s recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage. The wife role, which was played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the film, has yet to be cast.

Howey most recently starred in the hit Showtime series “Shameless,” playing the role of Kevin throughout...

Film Review: Graveyard of Honor (2002) by Takashi Miike
Image
In 2002, there was possibly no way of avoiding the presence of Japanese director Takashi Miike in his home country, given the incredible output of eight films released that year. Starting off with the final entry in the “Dead or Alive”-trilogy 2002 included such features as “The Happiness of the Katakuris”, “Agitator” as well as “Graveyard of Honor”, a re-interpretation of the original directed by Kinji Fukasaku in 1975. While some of the entries of that year have more or less disappeared into obscurity, perhaps one of the most notable development in Miike’s career is the occurrence of two films – “Graveyard of Honor” and “The Happiness of the Katakuris” – based on an already existing film. But then again, a “remake” by Takashi Miike is never just a “remake”, it is always something quite unique.

In an interview during the 2002 International Rotterdam Film Festival, Miike finds a moment of...

Film Review: Zebraman (2004) By Takashi Miike
Image
By Wally Adams

“So….What’s your favorite Takashi Miike movie?” Since Miike is one of the most prolific modern directors the world has ever seen as well as the fact he’s worked in and at different junctures of his career focused on different genres and even different mediums, one is very unlikely to find any smooth consensus for that question. But there are popular choices among different film demographics: the closest thing to a universal critical favorite is “Audition” though it still thoroughly turns more than a few off, or more recently “13 Assassins“. Even more acquired tastes are exploitation audience favorites “Ichi the Killer” and “Dead or Alive”. Mainstream audiences in Japan actually best remember mega-hit movies that capitalized on (then) big trends like the cell phone horror movie “One Missed Call” or the idol-fueled “Andromedia” marking the Digital Age. But art film and major festival audiences...

The Guy Selling Dead or Alive Nude Mods on DVD Gets Sued
Image
An unnamed man is being sued by Koei Tecmo for selling a Dead or Alive DVD full of nude mods. The specific game in question is the Japanese-only release Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation, which features the characters in extremely small bikinis. The franchise is best-known for its female characters, but there is never any nudity included in the games themselves, though some of the bikinis are barely there. Regardless, Koei Tecmo was not amused when they discovered that a DVD with nude mods was being sold on an auction site.

Japanese outlet Famitsu says the Dead or Alive footage was modded for "the removal of character clothing," and that it was being sold. According to a new report, Koei Tecmo is "pursuing the suit as a case of malicious copyright infringement, and plans to bring both a criminal case and a civil suit against the alleged" author of the nude modded disc.

Paul W.S. Anderson Already Writing A Monster Hunter Sequel
When you see Paul W.S. Anderson’s name attached to a movie whether he’s calling the shots as a director, had a hand in writing the script or he’s producing the project, you generally know what to expect. There’s going to be a fantasy element that usually leans into horror, plenty of visual effects-driven action and more than likely an appearance from Milla Jovovich.

The filmmaker’s next effort, Monster Hunter, looks to combine all of Anderson’s signature flourishes into one complete package, and even sees him back in video game adaptation territory after previously tackling beloved cult favorite Mortal Kombat a quarter of a century ago, producing the horrendous Doa: Dead or Alive and bringing the Resident Evil franchise to the big screen.

Based on the footage we’ve seen so far, Monster Hunter has absolutely no designs on convincing skeptics that the action-packed blockbuster is worth their time,...

Monster Hunter Director Explains How Video Games Should Be Adapted
Paul W.S. Anderson is more than experienced in adapting video games for the silver screen, catching his big break in Hollywood by helming 1995’s cult classic Mortal Kombat. Of course, Anderson also launched what would go on to become the highest-grossing series of video game movies in history with Resident Evil, directing four of the six films and writing them all.

If you count Alien vs. Predator, which was technically a crossover that first happened in comic books but was also the subject of several games well before the big screen version, then the filmmaker has even more background knowledge of the genre, while he also had a hand in what might very well be the most ludicrous adaptation in existence after producing Cory Yen’s Doa: Dead or Alive.

The 55 year-old is back on familiar turf with his latest effort Monster Hunter, which sees Anderson firmly in his wheelhouse...

The Internet Is Roasting The New Monster Hunter Trailer
The first official trailer for Sony Pictures’ upcoming Monster Hunter film is here and, as wholly expected, fans have responded by giving the creature feature a fierce roasting online.

For those not in the know, this is the latest flick being directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, a name that’s essentially become synonymous with live-action video game adaptations. Beginning with Mortal Kombat back in 1995, Anderson has brought several other franchises from the medium, including Doa: Dead or Alive (producer only) and, most notably, Resident Evil, to the big screen, all of which have garnered mixed receptions from fans and critics alike. The latter, in particular, has often been criticized in the past for playing too fast and loose, so to speak, with the source material, by changing or completely omitting key events or details from Capcom’s beloved survival horror series to fit a different vision.

Creative freedom is important in any artistic medium,...

Kinji Fukasaku’s Graveyard Of Honor (1975) and Takashi Miike’s 2002 Remake Available Together on Blu-ray September 8th From Arrow Video
Image
Kinji Fukasaku’s Graveyard Of Honor (1975) and Takashi Miike’s 2002 Remake will be available together on Blu-ray September 8th from Arrow Video

Two peerless masters of Japanese cinema Kinji Fukasaku and Takashi Miike present their own distinctive adaptations of yakuza expert Goro Fujita s gangster novel Graveyard of Honor, each tapping into the zeitgeist of a distinct period of Japanese history.

Set during the turbulent post-war years, Fukasaku s original 1975 film charts the rise and fall of real-life gangster Rikio Ishikawa. Shot through with the same stark realism and quasi-documentarian approach as Fukasaku s earlier Battles Without Honor and Humanity, Fukasaku nonetheless breaks new ground through his portrayal of a gangster utterly without honor or ethics, surviving by any means necessary in a world of brutal criminality.

Meanwhile, Miike s 2002 retelling transplants the story to Tokyo at the turn of the millennium. Less a direct remake of Fukasku s film...

Another Decade with Takashi Miike: Extreme Violence, Extreme Passion
Image
Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010 films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century. At once propulsive and ruminative, First Love finds Takashi Miike looking back on his career while generating a steadily escalating sense of suspense. The film’s streamlined quality confirms what a focused filmmaker Miike has become over the 2010s: though it contains about a dozen major characters and several important conflicts, the director moves between them fluidly. He also exudes such intense energy while doing so that First Love generally recalls the freewheeling films Miike made in his late 90s/early 00s heyday. The director underscores this link with the past with plenty of gleefully outré content, such as multiple beheadings (all of them presented comically) and a progression of events that culminates with a harried sex worker frenziedly snorting heroin off a Yakuza’s crotch.

Film Review: Deep Logic (2020) by Kentaro Yamagishi
Image
Considering the opportunities social media and video platforms can provide, it is no surprise to see new talents and stories being discovered on platforms like YouTube and many others. In an industry which is at times content rehashing the same idea but with a different surface, it is quite astounding to find new approaches and people being just creative, even though not every short feature streamed on YouTube works fine as a feature film. In 2015, something similar happened to what was supposed to be the anniversary video of Japanese theater troupe 6BanCEED, directed by Kentaro Yamagishi, which showed the members of the group within what looked like an awesome Hollywood-like blockbuster playing various different and colorful characters. When people got to see the outcome of the troupe’s effort, they wanted to see the whole film and thus the project “Deep Logic” was started.

“Deep Logic” is screening at Japan...

Sukiyaki Western Django, Django and Dream Demon: Jim Hemphill’s Home Video Recommendations
Image
Japanese horror and action master Takashi Miike is one of those directors who’s so prolific that it’s easy to take him for granted; ever since he caught American cinephiles’ attention in 1999 with Audition and Dead or Alive, he’s been cranking out something close to a half-dozen movies each year, releasing his kinetically supercharged orgies of style and violence faster than some viewers can keep up with them. While I wouldn’t try to make the case that all 100-plus Miike productions are masterpieces, when he’s firing on all cylinders – as with Audition, or last year’s First Love – he’s […]...

Quentin Tarantino to Make Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Spinoff TV Series
David Crow Jan 17, 2020

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might be over, but the adventures of Bounty Law’s Jake Cahill have only just begun!

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino made one of the best movies of 2019 by channeling his deep and affection for 1960s Hollywood into a grand epic of nostalgia daydreaming. The film, mistaken initially by many to be about the “Manson murders,” was instead a laconic hangout dramedy, led by washed up TV Western star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), who was famous 10 years prior for playing Jake Cahill on Bounty Law. Now that legend of Cahill will live on past Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’s wistful closing shot.

Speaking with Deadline while in the midst of the Oscars campaign season, Tarantino revealed that while imagining a fictional ‘50s TV Western for Rick Dalton to star in—think Steve McQueen on Wanted: Dead...

Quentin Tarantino Will Write and Direct All 5 Bounty Law TV Episodes
Quentin Tarantino at an event for La 85e cérémonie des Oscars (2013)
Quentin Tarantino is only going to make ten movies before he calls it quits, but that doesn't mean he won't find other ways to keep himself busy. Case in point, we learned last year that the filmmaker had plans to turn the fake western TV show Bounty Law from his movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood into a real thing. Now, Tarantino has offered an update, saying that he intends to direct all of the episodes himself. Though, it may be a while before he gets around to it.

Recently, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture. With that, Quentin Tarantino made the press rounds a bit again, as he surely will be leading up to the Academy Awards. During a recent interview, he was asked about the status of Bounty Law and if he intends to do something with the scripts he's written.

Actress Natassia Malthe Accuses Harvey Weinstein of Rape: ‘I Wanted it to End, I Played Dead’
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Actress and model Natassia Malthe has accused Harvey Weinstein of rape. Malthe shared her story during a press conference in New York City on October 25 where she was joined by attorney Gloria Allred. The actress claims Weinstein forced himself on her during their first meeting, and then on a later date requested she partake in a threesome with him.

Malthe told the press that she met Weinstein in February 2008 at the BAFTA Awards in London while she was working as a spokesperson for LG. He requested to take a photo with her and pressured her into giving up her hotel information. “I was put on the spot,” she said. Later that night, Weinstein reportedly banged on her door and unexpectedly invited himself in.

Film Review: The Book (Finally) Closes on ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’
Chicago – Guilty pleasures are the order of the day, especially when we are facing daily signs of a real, impending apocalypse. End of the world by zombies remains one of the most popular cataclysmic cinematic events and “Resident Evil” is proof. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” proves that what should be dead can come back to life, but the real question is if it actually should.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The “Resident Evil” film franchise has been around for over half my life and has proven to be the most successful (read: profitable) film series based on a video game to date. Having grown up on the video games, and having the first film come out during a probably impressionable time in my life (read: puberty), I have had this lingering fascination towards the franchise. The synergy created by combining several of my interests (video games, film, zombies, strong female protagonists, etc) has...

Videogames… They’ve not had the best of luck when it comes to translating themselves from game to movie. Especially when adapted into live-action movies. You end up with films like Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, Doom and 2007′s Hitman. But they’re not all bad… Mortal Kombat kicked plenty of on-screen arse and garnered many a film fan’s love thanks to a plot that didn’t mes around with the source material or with inconsequential new storylines and characters. The Resident Evil franchise has at least managed to find a fanbase and continuing budgets to keep going even in the face of derision from non-gamers and gamers alike. And the...

It’s a well known fact that many of Hollywood’s Aussie actors have appear in the likes of Home and Away and Neighbours during their rise to the big leagues.
