John Carpenter Offers A Blunt Explanation Why His Franchises Will Never Get A Big Crossover

John Carpenter explains that his franchises probably won't cross over due to different entities owning the rights to the movies, which could result in expensive lawsuits. Carpenter has kickstarted a few franchises, including Halloween and Escape from New York. At a New York Comic Con panel, the director shared his dislike for the potential legal consequences of incorporating characters like Snake Plissken in a horror movie.

John Carpenter has shared a candid reason that franchises he has started probably won't cross over. The director, who is best known for his work in the horror and science fiction genres, helmed the first movie in the massive Halloween franchise, which now includes 13 movies and a possible upcoming TV adaptation. At the time of writing, he has directed 18 theatrical features through 2010's The Ward and has only recently returned to directing, helming an episode of the Peacock series Suburban Screams.

John Carpenter's 1998 film "Vampires" -- based on the 1990 novel "Vampire$" by John Steakley -- is 30% vampire movie and 70% Western. It follows a cadre of ultra-masculine, cussing, toxic badass vampire hunters who wear black clothes and treat women like garbage. They are led by a snarling jerk named Jack Crow, played by James Woods, and you may insert your own joke about savvy casting here. This team of vampire hunters is sponsored by the Vatican and receives a hefty payout every time they infiltrate and exterminate a nest of bloodsuckers. 

In this universe, vampires hide in desert shacks during the daylight hours, and sometimes merely bury themselves in sand. They are all ghoulish monsters immune to crosses, holy water, and garlic. Crackle, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s multi-platform video entertainment network, has launched a deadly collection of horror films entitled "Kill Count". "Kill Count" features a select group of 30 of the most stomach-turning, blood-dripping, gut-spilling horror films available anywhere that catalogue the most outrageous death moments — from impalements to truck sandwiches.

For thirteen days, beginning Wednesday, October 19th, through Monday, October 31st, users will be able to watch, rate, and discuss their favorite kills on Crackle. "Kill Count" boasts more than 300 kills in its collection including, but not limited to, 35 vicious stabbings, 12 decapitations, 8 defenestrations, 7 zombie face slashings, 4 vehicular murders, and 2 spontaneous combustions ... all for 1 bloody good time.
