American Idol season 22 winner Abi Carter has been very busy since she was crowned the champion of the reality singing competition series in May 2024. Abi, a 21-year-old musician from Indio, California, made history during American Idol season 22 as the first platinum ticket recipient ever to win the show. During her audition, she wowed the judges--Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan--with her extraordinary rendition of "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish. Abi went on to win American Idol season 22, defeating runner-up Will Moseley and third-place finisher Jack Blocker during the season finale.
During American Idol season 22, Abi had so many phenomenal performances, including "Oceans (Where Feet May Fall)," "Welcome To The Black Parade," "Clocks," "Bring Me To Life," "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)," "Hello," "Bed Of Roses," and "Somewhere." Body Count made an appearance Wednesday (December 5th) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.”
More of an adaptation than a straight-up remake, Body Count’s take on the Pink Floyd classic is highly stylized, and they nailed their rendition on Fallon.
Those familiar with the original song with recognize the overall arrangement and a few refrains (“Hello… is anybody out there?”), but Ice-t and company make the song their own, with the rapper cooly laying down bars that reflect on modern existential crises.
One thing the band didn’t alter was the song’s iconic guitar fireworks, even tapping David Gilmour himself to play the solos on the studio-recorded version. Although Gilmour didn’t make the trip out for the Fallon set, Body Count’s Ernie C boldly takes the reins on the lead axework, soloing for most of the...

Body Count stopped by The Tonight Show to perform their recent song, “Comfortably Numb,” an updated version of Pink Floyd’s 1979 single. The track, off the group’s new LP Merciless, sees frontman Ice-t rapping his own lyrics over the familiar music.
Ice-t sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the new album, as well as working with Pink Floyd and David Gilmour to get permission to use the classic song. “Not only David Gilmour, but David Gilmour and Roger Waters, who haven’t agreed on anything in 20 years,...

Body Count have unveiled the title track from their new album Merciless. The new song and accompanying music video arrive a day before the LP’s release on Friday (November 22nd).
The vicious track pits Ice-t’s bars against a riff that sounds like the intro from Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” It creates a doom vibe that drops into a chorus of Slayer-like thrash with ominous gang vocals chanting the song and album title (“Merciless!”). Ice-t proceeds to make his point clear: “I’ve only got one life to live / I got no more fucks to give.”
The Jay Scorsese-directed Nsfw video is quite a sight, recreating the shocking Merciless album cover — Ice-t as a torturous surgeon going to work on a KKK member — as if it were a scene from a horror film. Scorsese also directed the video for previous single “Psychopath,” another homage to horror and splatter films.

All it takes is one guitar note piercing through a pitch-black arena — one note dramatically reaching heavenward, as if it’s waking up — to recognize the guitarist. As soon as David Gilmour struck the introductory high E of “5 A.M.,” with only a soft red light and some even softer synths accompanying him, the packed audience at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday cheered. The lights slowly faded in, Gilmour’s famous slouch came into focus, and all of the weepy notes he could coax from his...

Early-aughts dance rock greats the Scissor Sisters may be gearing up for some kind of return after going on hiatus in 2012.
It’s extremely unclear what exactly is going on at the moment, though the band’s primary social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, and X) have all been updated to feature images of what look like television static. There’s mailing list fans can sign up for, as well.

Body Count have unleashed a cover of the Pink Floyd classic “Comfortably Numb,” featuring guitarwork from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band’s David Gilmour himself. The official music video can be seen below.
The track will appear on Body Count’s upcoming album, Merciless, which is set to arrive on November 22nd. The rap-metal band puts a new spin on the Pink Floyd song, with new lyrics delivered by frontman Ice-t.
“For me, ‘Comfortably Numb’ is an introspective song — it’s me acknowledging that I’m older now,” stated Ice-t. “I’m telling the younger generation, you’ve got two choices: you can keep the fire burning or you can give up. It’s me trying to make sense of what’s happening, but also pointing out that we’re all in a place where we don’t have to face reality.”

American Idol champion Abi Carter dropped the biggest news of her budding career so far: she's weeks away from finally releasing her debut album. Abi instantly became the frontrunner during American Idol season 22 when she auditioned for judges Luke Brian, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie with her rendition of Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" She went on to blow everyone away with such covers as Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," Taylor Swift's "All Too Well," Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" and Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," and then won the entire competition.
Abi's debut album, which is called Ghosts In The Backyard, will drop on November 28, four weeks after she releases her next single, "Comfortably Numb." The American Idol winner made the announcement on Instagram while reflecting on her career aspirations and how releasing an album was the "very first goal" she wrote down on...

David Gilmour’s ‘Luck and Strange’ Is a Sometimes Beautiful, Sometimes Chilly Dark Night of the Soul
The most intriguing song on Luck and Strange, David Gilmour’s first solo album in nearly a decade, is a dark-mirror reflection of his own artistry: a rendition of the Montgolfier Brothers’ sardonic 1999 dream-pop song “Between Two Points,” sung by his daughter, Romany.
The original song was a slow-building echo of Pink Floyd’s realism, an impressionistic portrait of failed communication and a related sense of resignation. Refracted through the Gilmours’ lenses, “Between Two Points” feels starker and uncanny, as Romany plays the keyboard on a harp and sings, “Just...

Remaking a 2002 Hong Kong hit and setting the story in Irish-Catholic Boston, Martin Scorsese seemed to be out of his element with The Departed—if not, that is, for the fact that the film marked a return to the director’s bread-and-butter mean streets, and that his source material, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak’s Infernal Affairs, was itself heavily influenced by his iconic gangster films. Something of a genre homecoming after recent detours into the arenas of the historical epic (Gangs of New York) and the period biopic (The Aviator), The Departed again found him trawling a gritty, brutal urban underbelly where racial epithets spit from roughnecks’ mouths, class divisions are as sharp as a switchblade, and allegiances to others and one’s self are always tenuous at best.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason believes getting David Gilmour and Roger Waters on the same page for a reunion would require something like a miracle. While speaking about the band’s The Dark Side of the Moon classic “Time” on the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song, Mason said he thinks it would take someone like the late Nelson Mandela to broker a reconciliation between Gilmour and Waters.
“I think it’s highly unlikely, but I would’ve said that before Live 8 — 10 years ago or 12 years ago, whatever it was,” Mason said. “The one thing I could think would be possible would be if there was some… if by getting back together we could influence saving the planet, world peace, or whatever. Hopefully, we’d step up. But I don’t think otherwise. It would take a Nelson Mandela or someone like that to lead on it.”

Martin Scorsese's The Departed was a return to form for the director, and it also delivered a memorable soundtrack stuffed with popular music. Released in 2006, the film saw Scorsese shift his sights from New York City to Boston, and it wove a tale of deceit and corruption within that city's police force. Met with universal acclaim from critics (earning 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film gave Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar, with the movie itself winning a slew of awards. Like most of Scorsese's best, The Departed's soundtrack was integral to the film's storytelling and gave the viewer an insight into the inner world of the characters.
By showing both sides of the struggle between law and crime, The Departed had a much grander scale than Scorsese's other gangster pictures, and the characters had more richness and emotional depth as well. Scorsese's many needle drops in his movies...

Earlier this month, Pink Floyd announced plans for a live album documenting their 1990 performance at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, England, on June 30th, 1990.
It was a part of an enormous all-star show that also featured Paul McCartney, Genesis, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Robert Plant with surprise guest Jimmy Page, Status Quo, and Tears for Fears.
“There is something special about Knebworth,” drummer Nick Mason said in a statement. “We all still have fond memories of playing there in the Seventies, and this show was no different. As a North London boy,...

I’ve got to rush off to the premiere now, but thanks for your questions and sorry for not being able to answer more of them! Also, sorry for not dealing with the more political ones – it’s hard to do them justice in such a short time.

Scott McLennan asks:
A hypothetical for you, Benedict: after witnessing your polished performance of Comfortably Numb with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour last month, your all-time favourite act comes to you asking you to perform with them the song you’ve always dreamed of singing live in front of a massive audience. What song do you choose?

Watch out, people, Benedict Cumberbatch is here to party! The Hollywood actor surprised an arena full of David Gilmour fans tonight when he decided to hop on stage at Royal Albert Hall in London and debut his singing skills by belting Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" with the group's former member. We know, we can't believe we missed this, either! Luckily, concertgoers didn't waste any time before capturing this memorable moment on their phones and sharing it with the less-fortunate (read: everyone who wasn't at the show) on social media. nullnullnullSeriously, Benedict is showing us so many different sides to him, and we're loving it. Roger Waters, co-founder and principal songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert film that goes well beyond the stage. Based on the groundbreaking concept album, Roger Waters The Wall could be called a concept film: it’ s a state-of-the-art show that dazzles the senses, combined with an intensely personal road trip that deals with the loss Roger has felt throughout his life due to war. On stage and now on film, Waters has channeled his convictions into his art and his music.
With Roger Waters The Wall, Waters – together with his fellow musicians and his creative collaborators – brings audiences an exultant ride of a rock and roll concert, and delivers an unforgettable, deeply emotional experience. One of the most moving scenes in Roger Waters The Wall finds the former Pink Floyd singer visiting the grave of his grandfather, George Henry Waters, who died while fighting in France during World War I. A clip of the scene, which comes via Ultimate Classic Rock, shows Waters reading the headstone then cuts back to reveal the singer standing with his children, looking down at the grave. "It's been an ambition of mine to come here with you three," he says. "Two great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter and a grandson." Daughter...

Michael Mann has perhaps one of the most unique and innovative directors working today. From what is arguably the greatest La crime saga of all time in Heat to the beautiful romance of The Last of the Mohicans and bringing Hannibal Lectre to the big screen for the first time in Manhunter, Mann has created a vast and wide ranging filmography.
A new 9 minute video released on IndieWire called The Sublime Presence in Michael Mann’s Films examines what exactly gives Michael Mann films their undeniable and fiery energy. Created by Tom Kramer, the essay examines most of Mann’s most legendary work. Manhunter, Thief, Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Collateral, and others are weaved together. Set to Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” the video delves into the rich, complex world of Mann’s films and his often cold characters.

Roger Waters celebrated his 71st birthday September 6th at the Toronto International Film Festival by attending the world premiere of his new documentary Roger Waters: The Wall. Tiff was the perfect venue for the former Pink Floyd bassist to debut his film since The Wall Live tour actually began its run at Toronto's Air Canada Centre on September 15, 2010, so Roger Waters: The Wall's Tiff premiere was like coming full circle. Also, what better way to follow "Bill Murray Day" than with a film that explores Waters' epic tour from behind "the Wall.

This week’s episode of The Leftovers is fantastic for three — count ’em, three — reasons: 1. It’s all about Nora (who, next to Garvey, is the series’ most likeable character). 2. Carrie Coons is flippin’ brilliant in the role (wouldn’t you agree?). 3. Nora actually ends the hour in a better place than she begins it (and when has that ever happened to anyone on this show before?). As an added bonus, the path that she takes to a brighter outlook is a fascinating and twisty one. Follow along, and I’ll lay out a trail of bread crumbs…

Pink Floyd The Wall is a feature length music video filmed in an era when those were something a bit more interesting than the video wallpaper we see today. It tells the story of Pink, a rock star who is really an amalgam of Pink Floyd’s founding members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, as well as some other rock stars Waters had met or heard about.
The movie is about his decension into madness. He is unable to cope with his father’s death in WWII, his mother who paid little or no attention to him, his “conveyor belt” schooling of facelessness, all the...

The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach told Rolling Stone that the goal with the duo’s eighth album, “Turn Blue,” out tomorrow (13), was to make a “headphone record.” Well, they have certainly done that. In fact, listening to the album through speakers feels like you’re doing it a disservice and missing lovingly crafted details. “Turn Blue” is an album that is meant to be heard in its entirety with your full attention as the music pans from left to right and flows from your ears into your brain. It is not background music. In fact, we’d suggest to get the full effect, sink into a bean bag chair and a lava lamp. The album gets off to a trippy start with the nearly seven-minute fuzzy opus,“Weight Of Love.” But that only hints at what’s to come. On “Turn Blue,” a punchy guitar line morphs into a sonic...

It was a murderer’s row of comic all-stars last night at the New York Comedy Festival’s Stand Up For Heroes event to raise money for the Bob Woodruff Foundation and America’s injured war veterans. Jon Stewart. Bill Cosby. Jim Gaffigan. Jerry Seinfeld. Hall of Famers all. But who knew the iconic rock star was a frustrated comic deep down? Bruce Springsteen, taking the stage last, not only performed three classic songs, but he set them up with some jokes. Some dirty jokes.

Roger Waters called for a boycott of Israel earlier this year, and now the former Pink Floyd singer-bassist is defending his The Wall Live Tour from accusations of anti-semitism in a Facebook post, titled "An open letter from Roger Waters." Waters begins the letter by explaining the recent controversy that erupted after a performance in Belgium last week: An Israeli man alerted a news source with video footage of a Star of David-marked prop pig that was featured in the show and destroyed by the audience at the end of the performance.

The Grammys are this Sunday, which is exciting for award show fans and depressing for people who think those awards should go to the right people. Sigh. Here are five current artists still in need of official Grammy love.
5. Scissor Sisters
(source)
Since the Scissor Sisters emerged a decade ago, their style has remained as quirky and danceable as anything Lady Gaga's ever produced, yet the Grammys haven't been as keen to reward the ragtag group with their due props. They've only been nominated once in the Best Dance Recording category, where the group's take on "Comfortably Numb" lost to Britney Spears' sole moment of brilliance, "Toxic." Where's the love for "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"? Or this year's wickedly saucy "Let's Have a Kiki"?
4. Adam Lambert

Straight away, the task of attempting to rank something as indeterminate as the top ten guitar solos ever is daunting, to say the least. How many genres do you take into consideration? Is acoustic given an equal consideration with electric? Do you judge it based on popularity, complexity, time length, or other factors? Whose opinion do you listen to?
Without further ado, here is one more version of the top ten guitar solos of all time:
Eruption – Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen, 1978). From the instant this searing explosion of notes erupts from the speakers, this aptly-named track stands out above all others as the purest pursuit of guitar playing perfection. Eddie’s virtuoso mastery of finger tapping, gonzo whammy bar dips, and artificial harmonics all come together in a staggering showcase of a man who forever changedthe way electric guitar was played. Comfortably Numb – David Gilmour (Pink Floyd’s The Wall,...

Fellini, Lynch and Bergman have all made adverts, so why shouldn't Anderson? Maybe because he's ended up making The Royal Tenenbaums with none of the plot or pathos
You don't need to see the credits for the newish Hyundai Azera ads to know they were made by Wes Anderson. The first shouts Tenenbaum, the second drips Zissou. The question that has sent the New Yorker, Slate and others into twitters over the last few days is whether these ads make Anderson a "sellout".
Anderson's style is actually a great fit for advertising. It's tough to get viewers to pay attention to a TV ad, especially after they've seen it (and hated it) once. But Anderson packs in so much detail, one YouTube commenter said he'd been sitting in front of the first frame for 30 minutes, soaking up the visual jokes. Now that's sticky advertising.
But is it a sellout? The wise have stroked their beards,...

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)
