Horror fans, prepare for a fright-filled evening as the iconic Friday the 13th returns to the big screen on the most sinister day of the year, Friday the 13th. Hosted by former Horror Channel presenter and all round horror scholar Emily Booth, this event promises to launch a new monthly horror film club with a scream. And all you need to do to enjoy it, is make your way down to the Electric Palace Cinema, in Hastings. Along with the classic slasher flick, audiences will be treated to Booth’s very own short horror film, Selkie, filmed on Rock-a-Nore beach, adding a chilling local twist to the event.
Friday the 13th is more than just a film; it’s a hallmark of the horror genre. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham and featuring a cast that includes a young Kevin Bacon, the 1980 cult classic follows a group of teenage camp counsellors who,...

[Note: With the film set for its digital debut tomorrow, here’s a reposting of our review of Midnight Peepshow from its festival run back in 2022]
British horror cinema has a long-standing tradition of producing some of the best anthologies of all time, in particular in the era of Hammer, Tigon et al. So when a new anthology comes along it can be hard to separate it from history and tradition. But with Midnight Peepshow, filmmakers Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci and Jake West actually tap into British cinematic history, setting their film in the formerly sleazy streets of London’s Soho – a place where, once upon a time, sex and cinema were often intertwined.

Cliff Twemlow is, for me, something of an enigma, an urban legend, even a myth if you like. I remember reading about this self-made film star in the pages of Darkside Magazine – his films seemingly lost to the VHS era in much the same way as Lindsay Shonteff’s oeuvre. Speaking of VHS, Twemlow is probably best known for G.B.H., a British gangster movie that became notorious after it featured on the video nasties list thanks to the garish artwork – Cliff’s character covered in blood brandishing a hammer!
What I didn’t know about Twemlow is that he wrote music, and performed not only as part of a band (under the name Peter Reno) but also penned theme songs under the same name for the De Wolfe label – over 2000 pieces of music in fact, themes that went on to be featured on TV shows of the era! Twemlow was also a novelist,...

You’d think Christmas horror films up until now had covered it all. Where can you go after all the killer Santas, snowmen and elves? Well, not too long ago, Krampus was the new thing for genre filmmakers to make a holiday film about and there’s been a few decent movies on that subject – none better than the 2015 film. Last year we got a couple of great new Christmas-themed horror movies with Violent Night seeing David Harbour as Santa saving Christmas and a family and the even more original but brilliantly violent Christmas Bloody Christmas, which featured a killer robotic Santa on the loose. 2023 doesn’t seem to be the year where Christmas horror runs out of ideas because now we are getting Werewolf Santa.

Writer/director Airell Anthony Hayles’ horror comedy Werewolf Santa will be making its premiere at FrightFest in London on Friday, August 25th, with a second screening following the next day. With several days left to go until we reach the premiere date, Screen Daily reports that Miracle Media International is already planning to give Werewolf Santa a theatrical release in both the US and the UK sometime during November this year!
101 Films International holds the international sales rights to the film outside the UK and North America.
This project was once going by the title Frost Bite. The new title might have tipped you off to the fact that Werewolf Santa is going to show us what happens when Santa Claus, who turns into a werewolf on Christmas Eve, wreaks havoc in a small seaside town. Dead Love is new unorthodox love story from writer and director Chris Gallagher, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Chris a few questions about making the film, working with Lloyd Kaufman and the seminal casting of Emily Booth whilst writing the script.
What can we expect from the film Dead Love?
Talking tables, cannibals, exploding hearts, an awesome soundtrack and many scenes of murder-sex (a term the actors coined on set). It’s essentially a love story concerning a man named Allan, a woman called Anne and a sentient piece of furniture! We’ve got all bases covered – if you want gore, we have scenes where some cast & crew had to watch through their hands. There’s a bit of comedy (hopefully) and underpinning that is the tale of two mismatched people finding love in an unlikely situation.

The Vicious Brothers, writer/directors of the two popular Grave Encounters found-footage flicks, turn their hands to a more traditional narrative movie, mixing traditional filming methods with their penchant for Pov shaky-cam, with Extraterrestrial.
Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group venture out toward the crash site and discover the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

The latest comic horror venture from 'Freak Out' creators Christian James ('Kill Keith') and Dan Palmer ('Evil Aliens') is new British zombie flick 'Stalled'. The project will be hitting the Us courtesy of Uncork'd Entertainment and Odin's Eye this coming October where it'll be receiving a limited theatrical run. Which will in turn follow up with a home release during November. Exact dates are still to be nailed down but in the meantime the movie has managed to piggy-back onto another zombie movie that is enjoying success at the box office currently. The new teaser poster manages to parody and take a literal massive sh#t on the artwork of 'World War Z'. Antonia Bernath ('St Trinians', 'Lykke'), Dan Palmer, Tamaryn Payne ('Hollyoaks'), Mark Holden, Giles Alderson ('The Harsh Light of Day'), Victoria Broom, Mark Kelly and Victoria Eldon all star.

To paraphrase Jonathan Rigby in his book English Gothic, horror is the one genre that Britain can truly claim as its own. And whilst British horror cinema is inextricably connected to gothic-tinged memories of Christopher Lee, cobweb-strewn castles and buxom scream queens, M.J. Simpson points out in this excellently researched tome that the face of British horror today offers far more.
Simpson appears to have taken on the Herculean task of watching every film that could fit the broad definition of being British (not always easy to tell, with funding and production often involving multiple countries), and being horror, again something of a broad church. A lot of the films he describes, giving not only plot synopses but reviews, production information and interview extracts, sound utterly terrible. He seems to have sat through a staggering amount of punishingly bad films so that we,...

Here's what's required of you: Obviously the ability to spell is going to help you out here as your film will have to be entitled T is for ... I watched this film twice, hoping to find one brief moment where the filmmakers delivered more of a message than boys will be boys and women will be bitches. Yet, despite a few opportunities, that moment of salvation never arrived. While I don't think the film is misogynistic, it's obvious the script presents women as the cause of all men's problems.
The story focuses on Vince, devastated by his upcoming divorce, and his six friends who have chartered a bus to the village of Moodley. Not only do they have access to a house for the evening, but three quarters of the village's population are women. The guys hope a night of drinking and debauchery with not only cheer up Vince, but give them a break from the overbearing women in their lives.

The horror anthology The ABCs of Death, inspired in part by early kids' books and bearing a real resemblance to Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, is a who's-who of current horror and genre stars and up and comers. The film will be divided into twenty-six segments in which a letter of the alphabet corresponds to a method of death. The segments will be short, but given that they'll be directed by people like Nacho Vigalondo, Jason Eisener, Noburo Iguchi and many more, they might pack a punch. Two more directors were added to the list today, bringing the total number of signees to twenty-five. The horror anthology is really coming back, and if things work out well Drafthouse Films, with Timpson Films and Magnet, might be right at the forefront of the mini-trend with a new project called The ABCs of Death. It will be up to each filmmaker to interpret, from accidental deaths to murders committed in cold blood." In other words, this might be a bit like Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies. But with directors like Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film) making the shorts, it could get a lot crazier than that.
