While remakes in general don’t bother me, I have to admit I didn’t think remaking Street Trash was a good idea. The original is the kind of weird, offbeat film it’s almost impossible to sit down and deliberately write, it’s the kind of weirdness that has to come organically, something any number of deliberate attempts at creating cult films have proven.
I did find it encouraging that Ryan Kruger had been picked to direct it. If anyone could pull it off the maker of Fried Barry, a seriously Wtf comedy about a junkie’s encounter with aliens and its aftermath, stood a good chance of being the one to do it. I also...

Warning: Spoilers for The Ultimates #6!Marvels newest Ultimate Universe version of the Hulk is absolutely detestable for a multitude of reasons, and I couldnt be happier about it. By tapping into some very real political attitudes, this villainous version of Bruce Banner is supremely unlikable in a way that makes you want to keep reading just to know how hell get his comeuppance.
For me, The Ultimates #6 by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and Travis Lanham really bumps up the Hulk to one of the most despicable villains of the entire Ultimate line simply by spotlighting his attitude towards the titular heroes. I'm not complaining about this attitude - not at all.
In fact, its a testament to the skill of the creative team and particularly Camp, who injects the Hulk with a perfectly detestable faade of self-righteousness. This Hulk is a supposed pacifist who talks about lofty ideals...

As the weather gets colder and the Halloween season creeps in like an eerie fog, the warmth and carefree vibes of summer become more and more of a memory with each passing day. However, if you’re looking to relive the freedom and adventure of the summers of your youth while still maintaining the spookiness of the current season, then Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp may be the perfect comic for you.
In this original graphic novel from Idw Comics, aspiring cartoonist Zelda is excited to spend her summer at the art camp of her dreams. However, she and the other campers learn that the camp is now under some new and suspicious management. In an effort to avoid the new sports-focused curriculum, Zelda ventures off to find a secluded place to draw in peace. Dragon Ball has no shortage of extremely powerful individuals and one of the franchises strongest elements is that it allows its narrative and characters to grow over a lengthy timeline that doesnt exist in a vacuum. Its particularly exciting when Goten and Trunks are introduced and its a smart way for Dragon Ball to pass the torch over to the next generation of heroes who might even surpass their parents prolific accomplishments.
Goten and Trunks still hold the record for the youngest Super Saiyans and they ascend to this powerful status at seven and eight years old, respectively. Its been rewarding to see these two young Saiyans mature over time and theyve become a natural team who are frequently at their best when theyre working together. Goten and Trunks are usually seen by each others side, but their relationship carries much more nuance than simply that of two friends who have the others back.

This article contains massive Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ending spoilers.
Adam Wingard grew up on the Shōwa era of Godzilla movies. That would be the period of time when Toho Studios produced monster movies during the reign of Emperor Hirohito—so all the kaiju flicks released between 1954 and 1975. This included ones where Godzilla was a scary emblem of nuclear radiation, sure, but more often than not, the Big G spent these decades as a glorified superhero who hung out with pals like Mothra or Anguirus on Monster Island.
“Those were the movies that were playing on daytime television when I was a kid,” Wingard says when he sits down with Den of Geek ahead of the film’s opening weekend. “So that’s where my inspiration from Godzilla really originates.” He even recalls a vivid childhood memory of watching Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) where the evil, robotic Zilla impersonates...

It may have ruffled the feathers of critics and G-fans alike, but Roland Emmerich's take on the Godzilla IP has ultimately gained a large group of devoted fans. And, thanks to its excellent relatively recent 4K Blu-ray release, that fanbase only has the potential to increase.
Is it actually a good Godzilla film? In no way whatsoever. But, is it an entertaining film? Without a doubt, and God help you if you were born in the '90s because you won't have a choice but to be hooked (no one can tell a '90s kid Godzilla's soundtrack is anything but just right).
As a whole, there's still an air of disappointment wafting around Emmerich's film, but now that the MonsterVerse has given G-fans their first true Americanized version of the monster, the 1998 film can be accepted on its own merits. And there are many merits to the '98 Godzilla,...

As an interconnected franchise, Legendary’s MonsterVerse is going to complete a decade in the pop culture landscape by next year, with a humble collection of five movies and two series, and the major connecting thread in its world-building, obviously aside from the primeval Titans, is the organization ‘Monarch’ itself. Despite being the central overseer of all Titan-related affairs, the role of the organization was largely undermined, and without a definitive direction, it was reduced to a generic plot device. Things took a better turn after Monarch: Legacy of Monsters added a strong foundation to the origin and gradual transformation of the titular organization, rooted in the human-monster relationship, which acts as a brilliant contemporary political commentary at the same time.

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6
Monster Island, a key location in the Godzilla franchise, has been confirmed to exist in the Monsterverse and is revealed to be Hateruma Island. Hateruma Island is depicted as a Titan hideout, with "cosmic levels" of radiation, and may have a lair where Godzilla and other Titans reside. The inclusion of Monster Island in the Monsterverse opens up new possibilities for future episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and potential crossovers with other Monsterverse films.
In addition to confirming the existence of Monster Island in the Monsterverse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters revealed its location on the map. Despite not having a place in the Godzilla franchise for decades, Monster Island has been integral to the lore surrounding the pop culture icon and the other iconic kaiju he shares his universe with. The success of the MonsterVerse franchise can be attributed to the failure of the 1998 Godzilla remake, which performed below expectations both commercially and critically. The disappointing performance of the 1998 Godzilla film led to the cancellation of plans for a trilogy and the expiration of the franchise rights, making way for the MonsterVerse to be created. While the original plan for the 1998 Godzilla franchise might have been intriguing, the MonsterVerse is considered a better direction due to its focus on human characters and the conflicts they face with the monsters.
The Godzilla-starring MonsterVerse has become a hit Hollywood kaiju franchise, but it never would’ve happened if a ‘90s flop had made a bit more money. Along with The Conjuring Universe, the MonsterVerse is one of the most successful cinematic universes to copy the Marvel model. Like Marvel, the MonsterVerse has a huge ensemble of classic characters that audiences have loved for years.

Warning: Spoilers for Skull Island season 1, episode 8
What happened in Netflix’s Skull Island show makes it extremely unlikely that Kong will get his classic powers in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Toho’s interpretation of the American pop culture icon possessed a hidden ability that proved crucial to his victory over Godzilla. After enduring a brutal beatdown at the hands of Godzilla in King Kong vs. Godzilla, the giant ape was struck by a bolt of lightning, which charged him up and made him a force to be reckoned with.
As King Kong vs. Godzilla revealed, electricity has a strange effect on the monster. Surprisingly, it strengthens him somehow. Plus, his final fight demonstrated that once charged up, he can even discharge bursts of electricity from his hands, shocking his opponents. Though this was an invention of Toho’s movie, it’s long been theorized that the MonsterVerse would make this ability canon.

If given a chance to re-make the infamous 1998 American-made Godzilla film, producer Dean Devlin revealed a fundamental change he would make to change the audience's perception of the Kaiju.
During an interview with Yahoo!, in which Devlin discussed their "intellectual" decision while making the movie, "deciding Godzilla was neither good nor evil." Because the 1998 film's Godzilla, often referred to as American Godzilla or Zilla, is portrayed as an animal attempting to reproduce by laying its eggs somewhere safe, it was difficult for audiences to develop an emotional connection with the creature. Agreeing with fan backlash over the film, Devlin explained how he would change the movie to appropriately alter fans' perception of the Kaiju if the opportunity arose: "I would have made Godzilla an absolute hero, and everyone would have been rooting for him the whole time."

The 1998 adaptation of Godzilla is infamous for its attempt at rebooting the iconic franchise and redesigning the kaiju. Producer Dean Devlin recently looked back on the film and expressed agreement with the film's negative reception.
In an interview with Yahoo, Devlin stated, "We made an intellectual decision that sounds good in the room, but is really terrible for making a movie... We decided that Godzilla was neither good nor evil — it was just an animal looking to reproduce. It was a threat to us because it puts us at risk in order to survive." He continued, "That's an interesting way to approach it, but it doesn't tell the audience how they're supposed to feel about the title character."

Is it possible, in the grand age of visual and storytelling sophistication in which we live (the sarcasm is coming through, isn’t it?), to experience the exquisite delirium of an old Japanese kaiju movie, say, anything in the Godzilla-and-related-monsters series from roughly 1957 to 1975, without responding to it simply as inept camp, or as something to be immediately discounted or condescended to because of the “fakeyness” of its special effects? (In that time range I’ve deliberately left out the original Gojira, released in 1954, a movie that has always, and particularly since its original Japanese version was re-distributed in the Us in 2004, enjoyed a measure of respect from demanding genre audiences because of its status as a painful and powerful response to the devastation at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.) Is it possible to enjoy these usually formulaic rubber-monster orgies of destruction precisely because of their artificiality?...

This ploddingly mediocre knockoff about a boy with a monstrous genetic secret is visually uninspired and not much to listen to
However discontented we all might conceivably be with the current state of Hollywood animation, and various iffy threequels for Cars and Despicable Me, it’s still dispiriting to encounter this ploddingly mediocre knockoff, with its budget effects, utterly uninspired visual design and flatlining dialogue.
A lonely kid at school is getting bullied and his overprotective dad won’t let him go anywhere without his inhaler. But the reason is that overexcitement could bring on, not an asthmatic attack, but an awful metamorphosis. The boy’s genetic secret is that he is a monster, like his dad. So he will have to journey to his mythic homeland, Monster Island, to confront his destiny.

For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

I can’t agree with fans that hate big crowds at big comic conventions. I tend to like big crowds. And I am always astonished by the way the San Diego Comic-Con takes over that town. I’m also in awe that the New York Comic Con is the biggest convention held in New York City’s Javits Center. The massive attendees at every big comic-con are both testaments to Geek Culture, and virtual victory laps for all fans everywhere.
To be honest, I also enjoy smaller comic conventions. There’s something special about being able to just wander up to a favorite creator and engage in a conversation with him or her. And at smaller shows, it’s empowering to be able to casually flip through a long box of comics to search for treasures, without elbowing your way through a crushing wall of other fans searching for their own treasures.

It was recently announced that the long hoped-for remake of the 1962 Kaiju classic King Kong v. Godzilla is in the works. But how could such a film work today, considering subsequent changes in the characters and the jaded skepticism of modern audiences? Let’s take a look and see how this clash of Kaijus could work today. Keep in mind this is all just guess work and speculation.
People love “verses” films. Whether it’s Alien vs. Predator or Jason vs. Freddy or the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans love to see two famous characters thrust together in one film to fight for supremacy. When you talk about Kaiju “verses” films, the ultimate monster battle of all time came in 1962 when the reigning king of giant beasts took on the original creature king. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

The new Godzilla remake has finally arrived in theaters. The rebooted king of monsters stars in his 30th film in 60 years but he continues to vacillate between good guy monster and bad guy monster. Which way does Godzilla work better? Should he be the sheriff or the outlaw?
(Spoilers ahead)
60 years ago, Gojira/Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted on screen; with a towering reptilian protagonist who was basically a rampaging beast. He was really a metaphor for the destructive power of the A-bomb. In the following three sequels, Gojira’s Counter Attack (Aka Gigantus the Fire Monster/ Godzilla Raids Again); Gojira vs. King Kong (Aka King Kong vs. Godzilla), and Mothra vs. Gojira (Aka Godzilla vs. the Thing); the radioactive monster continued his destructive, city-flattening ways, earning the enmity of the citizens of Japan. He was the ultimate threat.

Gareth Edwards’ staggering monster feature, Godzilla, has barely finished its opening weekend run and already a sequel has been announced. Deadline reports that the follow-up has been greenlit by Legendary, who will co-produce with Warner Bros. It’s not surprising, considering the phenomenal box office haul the film’s already raked in.
Today’s news will no doubt spark a ton of speculation online about where the sequel will tread. After all, there’s a wealth of ideas to be raided from ‘Zilla’s back catalogue. At a press conference with Screen Rant following Comic-Con last year, Edwards made his favourite Godzilla flicks common knowledge, even brainstorming on ideas for a possible sequel way back then:
“With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it.

With the Fantastic Four already in place in the forms of Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan, the rest of the cast of Josh Trank's reboot is also gradually arriving. Toby Kebbell was confirmed as Dr Doom a couple of weeks ago, and the latest name out of the hat is Tim Blake Nelson, who'll be playing a certain Harvey Elder.Afficionado ears may prick up at the mention of Elder, since he has a dubious alter ego as the Mole Man: the Four's first adversary in issue #1 of the comic. In the source, he's a scientist who discovers a hitherto uknown subterranean kingdom after being stranded following a hapless expedition to Monster Island. When nobody believes him, he decides to stay in the aptly named Subterranea as its first ruler, and show the surface world what it gets for not taking him seriously.Film-wise,...

Tim Blake Nelson has joined the cast of Josh Trank's upcoming Marvel Comics adaptation The Fantastic Four . The Hollywood Reporter says that he'll be playing Harvey Elder opposite Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan and Toby Kebbell. Comic book fans will recall Elder's name as being the alternate identity of the subterranean ruler known as the Mole Man. In comic book lore, Elder was a scientist who, after being lost on an expedition to Monster Island, wound up discovering the world of Subterranea. Because he was mocked by the surface world for his theories regarding the underground kingdom, Elder decided to stay and became the world's ruler. Although the Mole Man was the villain of the very first "Fantastic Four" comic, the trade notes that Elder is...

Will Godzilla take fans back to Monster Island? That concept is teased in new art from the upcoming behind-the-scenes book Godzilla: The Art of Destruction by Mark Cotta Vaz, with an introduction by director Gareth Edwards. Released to coincide with the reboot, and available May 13, this visually stunning tome presents an extraordinary new vision for the beloved character through a dynamic selection of concept illustrations, sketches, storyboards, and other pre-production materials. Here, in select pages from the book, we see what looks like Monster Island, where a giant nuclear submarine has been dropped into the landscape by the iconic monster. We also see the Janjira facility that monitors the crisis at hand, art depicting the Q-Zone, and a silhouette of Godzilla himself moving through the smoke and shadows.

They also confirm that the Monster Island conceit of the 1968 Godzilla flick Destroy All Monsters also plays into Edwards’ film, with its exploration of mankind having to deal with a reality full of huge, deadly behemoths — the director teases that there is more than just Godzilla smashing around.

Last week’s column engendered a conversation with Bill Hannigan. Now Bill and I don’t exactly see eye-to-eye politically, and my belief that “Wonder Woman, considering her upbringing, would most likely look to her own sex for an adult relationship before venturing into anything heterosexual” seemed to create a Rubicon that neither of us would or could cross. Bill responded to my statement as follows:
“…while it’s not unreasonable that Ww would explore a same sex relationship, I’d hope any writer would save that for another character – it plays straight (ha!) into the hands of those who would like to have us believe that being raised by gay parents (or even gay-tolerant parents) will make kids gay. If, as I think, it is far more nature than nurture, it should not matter if she were raised on Paradise Island, Fire Island, Monster Island or Long island.”

Fantastic Four fanboys can finally stop holding their breath. Josh Trank, director of "Chronicle," has finally been locked down to helm the "Fantastic Four" reboot over at Fox. While the news of Trank being attached to the project has been rumored for quite a while and a script is already in the works, we haven't really seen any forward momentum on the project until now.
The "Fantastic Four" reboot will reportedly be the next Marvel film that Fox dates for release right after "The Wolverine" and "X-Men: First Class 2." The film will more than likely be Trank's next movie, featuring an entirely new cast and a fresh take on the characters we all know and love. All of this exciting news has us wondering but one thing: Which villain will the Fantastic Four be pitted against?

Have you ever noticed how weird it sounds to use a “correct” word for something when everyone knows it as a brand name? Are you ever looking for a “tissue” or is it always a “Kleenex,” regardless of the brand? In calling their upcoming game G.I.
