Directed by Martin Bourboulon, this French adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel is part one of two, with the second (Milady) due to be released in France in December. Positively bursting with French talent, it’s a swashbuckling treat from start to finish, and the best Dumas adaptation in decades.

Set in 1627, the film begins with young Charles D’Artagnan (François Civil) arriving in Paris from Gascony, his heart set on becoming one of the King’s Musketeers. However, things don’t quite go according to plan, and by noon, he’s accidentally offended three of them – nobleman Athos (Vincent Cassel), fun-loving Porthos (Pio Marmai) and elegant Aramis (Romain Duris) – and been challenged to three separate duels.

It's been an eventful nine months for The Musketeers - both on- and off-screen - since we last saw Athos, Aramis, Porthos and D'Artagnan ride off into the sunset.

Launching with an audience of 9.3m in January 2014, the period romp became the BBC's biggest new drama since Call The Midwife - but while a second series was quickly ordered, the show was soon hit by the loss of its chief antagonist.

Departing for Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi - who'd played devious Cardinal Richelieu - left The Musketeers without a villain, but when Digital Spy visited the Prague set in September, spirits among the cast and crew were far from dampened.

"No disrespect of course to the great Mr Capaldi..." says actor Howard Charles, the burly Porthos, "...but Marc Warren as Rochefort is the next best thing."

For moviegoers growing up in the last 20-30 years, big is the new normal. I’m talking about those big-budget, over-produced, effects/action-packed extravaganzas that are as expected and routine an arrival as a commuter bus, and never more so than during the summer months. Like most Americans, I learned about Alexander Dumas’ Three Musketeers from their countless adaptations on screen and in print. For me, it was probably Sheldon Mayer’s Three Mouseketeers reprints along with the rallying cry of “One for all, and all for one” shouted by just about every cartoon, sitcom and prime time drama at one point or another. Sure, there was the delightful two film adaptation made by Ilya Salkind that was instrumental in their approach to Superman the Movie and my kids grew up adoring the somewhat boiled down, tongue-slightly-in-cheek version from Disney with a great cast (Oliver Platt, Kiefer Sutherland, Tim Curry, etc.). It wasn’t until last year that I actually read the book in its entirety and it was a revelation.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson's 3D take on The Three Musketeers is unlike any other adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic. Other takes may have emphasized the comedy or the action, but this film takes the interpretation to a whole other level. Anderson's Musketeers is outrageous, silly, historically inaccurate, loud, and totally preposterous. It is also incredibly entertaining, an impressive guilty pleasure if there ever was one.

Alexandre Dumas‘ novel is perhaps one of the most adapted for the big screen, and the 2011 The Three Musketeers movie is closer to the source material than the 1993 film of the same name.

Matthew Macfadyen (The Pillars of the Earth), Luke Evans (Immortals) and Ray Stevenson (Thor) play the Three Musketeers in the 2011 version, with Logan Lerman (Gamer) as hot-headed D’Artagnan. The three once-legendary French swashbucklers are now down on their luck but are called to reunite for a new mission. They must defeat Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich, Stone), a beautiful double agent whose villainous employer has his eyes set on the French throne and pushing Europe into war.

Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean movies) also stars in the action adventure movie as the Duke of Buckingham, as well as Christoph Waltz (Carnage) as...

Paul W.S. Anderson is nothing if not consistent. The much-despised filmmaker is known for bastardizing video game adaptations and being a little too much in love with slow motion, but the man has an audience, and he knows what they want and gives it to them in heaps. With The Three Musketeers, one has to wonder: What audience did he make this for?

Is this umpteenth adaptation of Alexandre Dumas‘ classic adventure meant to be a kids film, considering the terribly immature and condescending humor? Is it intended to be cool, with all the stagy, slowed-down action? Or did Anderson set out to make a parody? After two hours of over-the-top, bland and empty bangs and noises, the parody argument starts to feel right. There are more than a few unintentional laughs going on here.

“Disaster” is a word that gets thrown around too much nowadays, but Anderson’s film more than earns the hyberbole.

One of the fundamental rules of storytelling, especially in film, is to “show, don’t tell” the audience. Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers confuses the axiom for show-and-tell, elementary enough to crudely divide this swashbuckling tale into showy flourishes of action and scenes of talky exposition.

Throughout an all-cg opening, some portentous voiceover hastily establishes that, in this revisionist era, “Europe is a powder keg waiting to explode in a war that will engulf the entire continent…” of Europe. And, at the center of the turmoil, France is embroiled in a power struggle between the King (Louis Xiii) and his advisor, Cardinal Richelieu (played by Inglourious Basterds baddie Christoph Waltz). Only a few men can save the continent, of Europe, from total destruction!

Then, “tada,” The Three Musketeers title as music blares and each character makes their sneaky entrance — more ninja than musketeer, really — accompanied by splashy freeze...

Hollywood has been repeatedly retelling the same classic tales almost since the beginning of filmmaking, and Paul W. S. Anderson's new remake of The Three Musketeers illustrates why: No matter how hard a particular director might try, it's hard to screw up a really good story.

Alexander Dumas' 1844 novel has been put to film dozens of times, and each movie has tweaked the story to some degree. But Anderson's version is the first one to be shot in 3D and the first one to feature giant airships mounted with flame-throwing cannons. This begs the question, did we really need a Three Musketeers with flame-throwing 3D cannons? Of course we didn't. But since we now have one, we might as well talk about it.

The Three Musketeers, as envisioned by director Paul W.S. Anderson, feels like a period piece drama meets Resident Evil action. Considering Anderson is the helmer for those Resident Evil films, that should hardly surprise. But it is the 19th century intrigue he paints that is the overriding pleasantry of his film.

Anderson also effectively uses his real life wife Milla Jovovich as Milady de Winter, a character that is playing both sides. Teenage King Louis Xiii has taken the throne and is being counseled by the nefarious Cardinal Richelieu (the always good at being bad Christoph Waltz). Across the English Chanel in the U.K. Orlando Bloom’s Duke of Buckingham is trying to start a war with France with its weak and inexperienced King new to the crown. As an audience, you can never really tell who Jovovich is playing, and throughout it is even possible that she is...

To be too harsh on Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers doesn't seem fair. In fact, it feels like I'd be critiquing a four-year-old for coloring outside the lines. However, even a four-year-old learns by the time they are six that to make a pretty picture you have to be less careless with your strokes. Strangely enough, Anderson has been making Hollywood features for 16+ years and it would appear all he's done is stop coloring with crayons and is now splattering his canvas with high-end 3D paint.

All things considered, The Three Musketeers has got to be one of the dumbest period actioners I've ever seen, but not dumb in the way a movie like The Mummy is dumb, in that it's brainless action. This movie is just plain dumb from the top down. It makes no sense, it's a tonal mess and hot air lifted boats take precedence...

With director Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers opening today, Summit Entertainment held a big press junket in London and I got the chance to head across the pond to interview the cast and Anderson. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic story, The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden, Gabriella Wilde and Mads Mikkelsen. In the reboot, “the hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). Who knew the Three Musketeers were actually France’s version of the Mission: Impossible force? When we first meet them, Musketeers Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Aramis (Luke Evans), and Porthos (Ray Stevenson) are in Italy executing a perfectly planned caper with the assistance of Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), Athos’ very capable lover. Plot: When a royal necklace is stolen from the Queen of France, the Musketeers (Macfadyen, Evans, Stevenson) and the young d’Artagnan (Lerman) are hired to retrieve the priceless piece of jewelry from England, and in turn save the relations between England and France before a war starts.

Who’S It For? This particular Musketeers adaptation is made for pre-teen boys who still have trouble recognizing action clichés, and are more likely to think this movie is based on the candy bar than an actual book.

Expectations: There isn’t a lot to “expect” from a movie based on classic literature directed by the “other” Paul Anderson who directed Soldier and Resident Evil: Afterlife. I suppose I “expected” silliness.

Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, The Three Musketeers, has been out in our cinemas for about a week now (you can catch up on all things Musketeers-related here), and has been out in other international markets for some time, and in spite of some mixed reviews, its gross box office totals currently stand at just shy of $50m., from an estimated $75m. budget.

It’s important to note, however, that the film is only just being released in the States today, where naturally it’s expected it will find its biggest audience. So it should make a fairly healthy return on its initial budget, I would think.

The new version of 'The Three Musketeers' may be the first screen iteration of the 17th Century epic that includes flamethrowers, a fleet of airships, and a Milady de Winter who bungee jumps and has ninja-like weapons skills. It's also in 3D. Other than that, however, Paul W.S. Anderson's take on the Alexandre Dumas classic is treading on awfully familiar ground. Since 1903, the story has been filmed dozens of times, and not just in France or Hollywood, but also in Mexico, Italy, the Soviet Union, Argentina, Egypt and Iran. There's even at least one porno version. So the 2011 film will have to fill some pretty big boots if it wants to join the list below, which traces 'The Three Musketeers' through some of its most memorable screen incarnations.

Before they were a delicious candy bar, "The Three Musketeers" were the heroes of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel (and, in 1993, a much-needed paycheck for a then drug-hungry Charlie Sheen).

So, from what I understand, some press screenings of Summit's The Three Musketeers have already taken place and the film currently holds a 29% rating at Rotten Tomatoes with quotes such as Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune) saying, "Seriously: What the hell?" and Peter Howell of the Toronto Star saying, "The very existence of this film illustrates barrel-scraping desperation of the Hollywood kind." Not a good start, and it would appear that's where it will end... for now. My screening of Three Musketeers here in Seattle was originally slated for Tuesday, October 18. It was cancelled and it wasn't rescheduled. I'm debating going to a matinee on Friday morning and maybe you can help me out... I have my review of Paul W.S. Don't you just love post-converted 3D films and the way they'd be 100% better off being shown in the format they were shot in mind with? They capitalize on a gimmick that's wearing thin already, and in fact are often hurt more so by the application than they are helped. Not only are new films being post-converted, studios are beginning to dig into the vaults to squeeze some more money out of their past successes. There's nothing wrong with that, but at least do a good job of it. 'The Lion King' 3D was entirely pointless. 1994 animated backgrounds don't make for good eye candy in 3D. Perhaps 'Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace' will get the post-conversion right. It's kind of a scary thought bringing 1999 CGI into the realm of 3D, but it's a good opportunity to touch up the effects and build to the inevitable "complete" 'Star Wars' Blu-Ray set.

The Three Musketeers returns to UK cinemas from today with director Paul W.S. Anderson adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas. With a cast that includes Matthew Macfayden, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson as Athos, Aramis and Porthos respectively and Logan Lerman as wannabe Musketeer D’Artangnan, alongside Orlando Bloom as the Duke of Buckingham and Milla Jovovich as Milady, the film is unlike any version of the story you’ve seen before.

Paul W.S. Anderson, Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfayden, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich, Freddie Fox, Gabriella Wilde and producer Jeremy Bolt were recently in London to promote the film and we got a chance to sit down with them to talk all things Musketeer… and Muskerhound!

So when did you first become aware of the story of The Three Musketeers? Was it the novel, the movies or even Dogtanian and the Three Muskerhounds?

Author Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel The Three Musketeers has been done to death, time and time again. None so like this swashbuckling silliness that’s child-friendly and borrows heavily from Gulliver’s Travels and the success of the Pirates franchise.

Paul W.S. Anderson’s film centres on young hothead D’Artagnan (Lerman) – as well as lots of gadgets – who comes to Paris to become a Musketeer and encounters with his soon-to-be friends and fellow Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The Musketeers unite to defeat a beautiful double agent, Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.

There is no denying how inventive director Anderson and co have been here, as well as injected a lot of harmless fun into the story. The 2011 version has a lot less clashing of swords and far more amazing flying machines – Anderson admitted...

There have been so many attempts to bring Alexander Dumas‘ swashbuckling tale of a conniving Cardinal’s attempt to seize control of France from the young Louis Xiii, only to be foiled by a trio of ageing musketeers and their rebellious protégé. Some have been quite successful – 1974’s version (which we recently reviewed on Blu-ray, along with it’s sequel) starring a predominantly British cast is a witty, fun affair, while others have missed the mark – 1993’s version starring messrs Sheen, Sutherland, Platt and The Chris O’Donnell, lest we forget.

This latest attempt falls into neither category and instead can only be described as a farcical lump of film matter not worthy of consumption on a 12 hour airplane journey where the only alternative is listening to the high pitched screams of the infant that sits next to you.

This week sees the release of Paul W.S. Anderson’s energetic take on Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers and a few days ago Dave had the chance to sit down with the director and his cast to talk about this new version of the classic story.

While this is a world away from the zombie hijinks of the Resident Evil series Anderson has infused 17th Century France with some of the same coup-de-pied derrière he is known for and its no surprise that Milla Jovovich pops up in the formidable role of Milady de Winter and wields her sword with the best of them.

Everything we’ve seen so far for Paul W.S. Anderson’s anticipated adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel has been pretty damn brilliant, from the film’s first trailer at the start of the year to its character posters, and a fair bit more.
