It's official — Westerns are in. After a couple of decades when cowboys have seen diminishing returns on the big screen, the classic film genre has been returning in a big way. That is all thanks in part to Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe, but also to some great Western remakes, Kevin Costner's epic Horizon saga, and Oscar-winning films like The Power of the Dog. 2024 was a great year for Westerns, but 2025 is shaping up to be a good one, too, and the upcoming film Day of Reckoning is joining the ranks. The new film stars Billy Zane, Zach Roerig, Cara Jade Myers, Scott Adkins, and Trace Adkins. Directed by Shaun Silva, written by Travis J. Opgenorth, produced by Ali Afshar, Christina Moore, Daniel Aspromonte, and Don Lepore. Esx is bringing the film to theaters on March 28, 2025. Check out the synopsis below:

Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"
You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

When it first aired in 2000, "Six Feet Under" was unknowingly part of the dawn of a golden age of television. Alongside early-aughts HBO hits like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," the tragicomedy told the story of a family-run funeral home trying to make sense of life and death in the wake of the sudden loss of their father.
A revival has reportedly been in the works for some time, despite the fact that it would seemingly be in conflict with what is arguably the greatest series finale of a TV show ever. Still, the mere idea of a return to these loveable, complicated, and tragic characters makes us wonder what happened to the cast of "Six Feet Under?"

James Mangold directed films across genres including rom-coms, dramas, and biopics. He also helmed 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, one of cinema's best Western remakes.
James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma joins Hulu's streaming library on Mar. 1. This 2007 Western is an impressive remake of the 1957 film, one of cinema's genre-defining classics. With an impressive ensemble led by Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, and Ben Foster, 3:10 to Yuma is a darker, grittier version of the original, which had a hopeful, triumphant ending. In contrast, James Mangold's remake is character-driven with its complex villain and tragic protagonist. The film was a modest success upon release, and it has since earned a cult following; Western fans consider it a worthy remake, acclaimed by critics and the general audiences.

‘Girl Interrupted’ to ‘Walk the Line,’ Arianne Phillips Highlights Her Five Favorite Costume Moments
Costume designer Arianne Phillips is 0-3 for Oscar wins to nominations. But her nod this year for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” may be the film that turns her luck around.
Phillips’ talents have made her Tom Ford’s go-to designer (“A Single Man” and “Nocturnal Animals”), as well as Mangold’s, having collaborated with him on “Girl, Interrupted,” “Identity,” “Walk the Line” and “3:10 to Yuma.” She’s styled Courtney Love, Madonna and Lenny Kravitz to name a few, and her resume includes print, fashion and editorial work.
She was well on her way as a costume designer when she started working closely with Madonna, but was told, “You need to either be a stylist or a costume designer; you need to do rock and roll or fashion,” she says. “I chose to keep going,” Phillips says, by not picking one over the other. The remake of3:10 to Yuma released in 2007 stars Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and Ben Foster and tells the classic Elmore Leonard story. 3:10 to Yuma came out exactly 50 years after the original movie based on the same story, the 1957 3:10 To Yuma starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. While the 2007 version was highly praised, it lacks the gravitas of what Ford, Heflin, and the rest of the cast had done on screen decades earlier.
In 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, Crowe plays Ben Wade, the leader of a gang of outlaws, while Bale portrays Dan Evans, a Civil War veteran working on a ranch in the Arizona Territory during the 1880s. When Wade is arrested, circumstances arise that leave only Evans to make sure the outlaw boards the train to prison. Westerns have been enjoying something of a return to form in recent years. What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

Everyone assumed that the nominees for the Directors Guild of America’s top DGA Award would include, as they did in Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement, Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard, Anora’s Sean Baker, Conclave’s Edward Berger and The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet.
The question was: Who was going to snag the fifth and final slot?
The aforementioned quartet was recently joined on the Golden Globe Awards’ nominations list by The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat and All We Imagine as Light’s Payal Kapadia; and on the Critics Choice Awards’ nominations list by Fargeat, Wicked’s Jon M. Chu, Nickel Boys’ RaMell Ross and Dune: Part Two’s Denis Villeneuve.
But as exciting and glamorous as those awards shows are, they are actually less reliable predictors of Oscar recognition than the picks of the DGA, which more closely mirrors the directors branch of the Academy, which, in turn,...

James Mangold has established himself as a terrific filmmaker with modern classics like the Best Picture nominee Ford v. Ferrari, the excellent comic book film Logan, and the acclaimed remake of 3:10 to Yuma. However, the most acclaimed project of Mangold’s career thus far was the biopic Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. In addition to winning Reese Witherspoon the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as June Carter, Walk the Line helped revitalize Hollywood’s interest in making biographical films about the lives of acclaimed musicians. Mangold has now returned to the genre with A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet as a young Bob Dylan during his journey from Minnesota to New York City in the 1960s. Although Chalamet’s performance is certainly the reason to see the film, A Complete Unknown shows a different side to Johnny Cash thanks to...

The TV show Yellowstone has been a huge success since it premiered in 2018 with 44 award nominations and eight wins, including “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series” at the Golden Globes for Kevin Costner’s performance. The legendary actor, whose career spans over four decades, stars as John Dutton, a widowed patriarch who oversees the largest ranch in the United States—an empire that has been in his family's possession for six generations.
Costner has been no stranger to the Western genre. He played Lieutenant Dunbar in the cult classic Dances With Wolves from 1990, which he also directed, as well as Open Range (2003) and Horizon: An American Saga, a Western epic containing three films, with the final one currently in production. Glen Powell has mastered the art of embodying the charming leading man. 2023's "Anyone But You" — a rom-com loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" — was a surprise mega-hit that helped fast-track Powell and his co-star Sidney Sweeney's careers. Since then, Powell has co-written and starred in Richard Linklater's "Hit Man," where the actor showcased his magnetic star power in impressively entertaining vignettes. The more recent "Twisters," a sequel to the '90s blockbuster "Twister," also saw Powell playing the charismatic lead, in this case the meteorologist and storm chaser Tyler Owens (who's cheekily dubbed the Tornado Wrangler).
Even when Powell isn't donning the leading man suit, he is unforgettable, like in "Top Gun: Maverick," in which he played the skilled but cocky Hangman, a rival to Miles Teller's Rooster. A quick look at the actor's filmography makes it clear that his superstardom is hard-earned.

Fans of Christian Bale and Russell Crowe should prepare for a showdown because 3:10 to Yuma, the critically acclaimed Western thriller, is set to leave Netflix on January 1, 2025. Talk about throwing a horseshoe. Directed by James Mangold, 3:10 to Yuma tells the story of rancher Dan Evans (Bale), who ends up roped into escorting the notorious outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) to a train that will take him to prison. On the journey, Dan faces more challenges than he could have ever imagined as Wade's gang tracks them, trying desperately to rescue their leader, all while Wade plays mind games with Dan to test his morality.

“Walk the Line” was hardly the first Hollywood movie that dared to serve up a facsimile-driven portrait of a singularly original artist, as though lightning-in-a-bottle creative genius could ever hope to be recaptured by studio notes and a three-act structure, but if writer-director James Mangold didn’t invent the standard-issue music biopic, I would argue that he committed the far more reprehensible crime of perfecting it — of so perfectly crystallizing the sub-genre in the public imagination that it had to be destroyed from several different angles at once. Arriving at essentially the same time some two years later, Jake Kasdan’s “Walk Hard” and Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There” both humiliated Mangold’s 2005 Johnny Cash biopic for its formulaic inauthenticity; one was a parody and the other a prism, but each of those (under-performing) cult classics so devastatingly exposed the paint-by-numbers essence of Mangold’s Oscar-winning hit that Hollywood naturally...

There may not be a better connoisseur of “dad cinema” working today than James Mangold, who has consistently been able to deliver the types of old-fashioned genre films that it doesn’t seem like Hollywood is interested in making. Between rousingly entertaining musician biopics, genuinely inventive blockbuster sequels, exciting action thrillers, and classical character dramas, Mangold is one of the rare artists who can make films with a larger budget and feel like they still have an identity. Although it is great to see that Mangold has only been given more resources, his early work indicated that it was his approach to characters that made him so distinguished. Mangold’s debut film, Heavy, is a sensitive character drama that was able to examine small town life with a great deal of sensitivity.

Gladiator (2000) star Russell Crowe is attempting to give back to support a fellow actor. After the immense success of Gladiator 2 at the box office, the dormant franchise has finally returned to the public eye. Crowe did not appear in the sequel. His character, Maximus, died in the original. His presence remains, though, as characters continually acknowledge his influence on the overall narrative. Crowe has instead worked on a variety of other projects since the 2000 hit, including 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Les Misérables (2012), Man of Steel (2013), and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter (2024).
Recently, however, Crowe has turned his attention to an important cause: supporting his fellow Gladiator cast members. Stuntman Chara Allan suffered a severe leg injury after attempting to renovate his garage door, leading to fears that his leg could be amputated. His coworker organized a GoFundMe campaign, which set a £25,000 goal to help Allan afford an expensive and less invasive treatment.

The 1957 classic Western 3:10 to Yuma starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin is headed to Tubi on Dec. 1 for audiences to stream for free. Heflin stars as a poor rancher named Dan Evans who is hired by a stagecoach line to put the outlaw Ben Wade on the 3:10 train to Yuma while Wades gang tries desperately to free him.
The original film, directed by Delmer Daves, which inspired a 2007 remake starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, focuses on a working-class protagonist in the late 1800s, as opposed to the typical outlaw or lawman in traditional Western movies of the day. The 2007 film has been regarded by some as the greatest remake of a Western movie.

Its time to take the 3:10 to Yuma all over again when director James Mangolds Western remake pulls into the streaming train station on Paramount+ beginning Friday, November 1. Starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, the film even outshines director Delmer Daves 1957 original, which came out 50 years beforehand, in the eyes of the late movie critic and Chicago Sun-Times journalist, Roger Ebert.
Ebert gave 3:10 to Yuma a perfect four-star rating, and he was particularly impressed by the quality of the acting, which he wrote about in his original review (per RogerEbert.com):
James Mangolds 3:10 to Yuma restores the wounded heart of the Western and rescues it from the morass of pointless violence. The Western in its glory days was often a morality play, a story about humanist values penetrating the lawless anarchy of the frontier.

Russell Crowe remains one of the most recognizable names and faces in Hollywood. Crowe remains best known for several seminal performances in the late '90s and early '00s, including as a rule-breaking detective in L.A. Confidential (1997), a big tobacco whistleblower in The Insider (1999), a mathematical genius in A Beautiful Mind (2001), and a just captain in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). It's his role as Maximus in Gladiator, however, that arguably remains his most iconic part.

Indie film is a term that often appears in movie conversations yet rarely gets used in the proper context. A true independent film is produced and distributed outside of the major Hollywood studio system. Many times, films are produced independently, yet have to rely on the major studios for distribution. Also, due to limited media ownership in the United States, many independent film companies are now owned by the major studios themselves.
Since the Western genre's apex in popularity occurred during Hollywood's Golden Age, a time in film history dominated by major studios, most great indie Westerns are more modern releases. In the twenty-first century, indie Westerns have played a significant role in returning the Western genre to critical acclaim. Dances with Wolves, Hell or High Water, and 3:10 to Yuma rank among the greatest indie Westerns of all time.

New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.
Here’s a look at the brand new trailer.

Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, Westerns have delivered audiences some of the most powerful performances and best-written stories of cinema, from John Wayne in The Searchers to Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. In 1993, Tombstone shook up the genre by bringing a star-studded, action-heavy story to the West, quickly winning over a new generation of viewers to the Western and revitalizing the film industry's interest in it.
Since the success of Tombstone, the Western genre has proven to be incredibly versatile, and studios have been more open to experimenting with the Old West than ever before. Films like Horizon: An American Saga, 3:10 To Yuma, and True Grit represent some of the most ambitious, best-written, and entertaining Westerns of all time. However, in the age of blockbuster superhero cinema, it's never been easier for great Westerns to go overlooked by mainstream audiences -- and these films prove it.

At the end of 3:10 to Yuma, Dan Evans (Christian Bale) gave his son, William (Logan Lerman) an important item, but the Western doesn't make it overly clear what that was or why it was so special. Though it's a remake of a 1957 Western, 3:10 to Yuma is even better than the original, and it's even one of Russell Crowe's best action movies. Part of the reason it surpassed its source material is because 3:10 to Yuma is layered with symbolism, emotion, and important character moments. One of those moments, however, wasn't completely clear.
3:10 to Yuma follows Dan and William as they try to escort the notorious criminal Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) to a train bound for Yuma prison. It was an incredibly dangerous journey, but by the end of 3:10 to Yuma, Dan succeeded and got Ben on the train. However, before he finished the job, he...

Perhaps no other director working today has done more to keep the Western alive than James Mangold. Although he's hopped from genre to genre throughout his career, the spirit of the Western is present in films as varied as Cop Land, Walk the Line, and Logan. So it's surprising that he's only directed one proper cowboy movie: 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, a remake of a 1957 adventure yarn adapted from a short story by Elmore Leonard. It seems appropriate that Mangold would remake a movie from the '50s, considering his life's mission seems to be infusing Old Hollywood classicism with New Hollywood sensibilities. And with 3:10 to Yuma, which is streaming on Netflix in September, he found the perfect vehicle to express the themes that have been ever-present in his work.

We spoke with actors Kayli Carter and Charlie Tahan amid the release of their indie dramedy I'll Be Right There, which sees them as eccentric siblings and children of a distressed single mom played by Edie Falco. Carter and Tahan have some laugh-out-loud moments in their new film and interestingly enough, they're also co-starring in an entirely different feature film: A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic where Timothe Chalamet portrays the iconic singer. But it's the film's director who stood out the most to the two actors.

For the past three weeks, a seemingly perfect couple has kept the Netflix action comedy, “The Union,” at the top of the streaming chart of the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report. Alas, this week, the Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg union dissolved, sliding down the streaming chart to No. 10.
They are instead replaced with “The Perfect Couple,” quite literally. The limited series, based on the bestselling novel, was a huge hit as it was seen in 2.3 million households in just four days after it was added to Netflix on Sept. 5. Interestingly, the show, which stars Nicole Kidman as the matriarch of a powerful Nantucket family, proved popular among high-income households. Those with incomes greater than $200,000 over-indexed by 23% based on viewership compared with the national average, according to Samba TV data.

Following an extremely productive 2024, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe has seven upcoming movie and TV projects. As fans wait to see how Crowe fares as Nikolai Kravinoff in Marvel's Kraven the Hunter in December, it's worth seeking out one of the Australian actor's most underrated movies and best villainous performances. In 2007, Crowe co-starred with Christian Bale in the deeply absorbing remake of the 1957 western 3:10 to Yuma, directed to critical acclaim by James Mangold.
Despite grossing over $70 million at the international box office and earning two Oscar nominations, 3:10 to Yuma remains one of the most overlooked movies in Crowe's decorated filmography. Fortunately, the movie has recently been added to Netflix and has been outgunning the competition en route to the top of the most-watched movie charts in the U.S. For those looking for an unheralded Russell Crowe movie that showcases his acting range ahead of his next Marvel movie, catching...

Russell Crowe and Christian Bales 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma is now streaming on Netflix and its even greater than the classic original movie from 1957. 3:10 to Yuma was director James Mangolds follow-up to his Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. It was Mangolds most action-packed movie up to that point, and the action filmmaking chops he developed on 3:10 to Yuma would serve him well when he took on big-budget blockbusters like Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in the years that followed. 3:10 to Yuma remains one of his finest movies.
Released 50 years after Delmer Daves original 3:10 to Yuma, Mangolds remake didnt make a huge splash at the box office, but it was well-received by critics, and its since been re-evaluated as a cult hit. Its rare that a remake of a classic movie is anywhere near as great as the original, and...

Back in 2007, Christian Bale had only one "Batman" movie on his resumé, and Russell Crowe hadn't yet tortured audiences with his vocal performance in the film version of Les Misérables. They also appeared in a Western movie together, and years after its release, people are going wild for the movie on Netflix.
"3:10 to Yuma" — which was written by Halsted Welles, Michael Brandt, and Derek Haas and helmed by future "Logan" director James Mangold — tells the story of a rancher who's down on his luck and ends up taking a risky assignment to bring down a famous outlaw, with Bale as rancher Dan Evans and Crowe as outlaw Ben Wade. The film, which is both an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's short story and a remake of a 1957 take on the story, boasts a pretty stacked cast and includes Logan Lerman, Ben Foster, Gretchen Mol, Alan Tudyk, and even the late legend Peter Fonda.

One of the many films to premiere on Netflix at the start of September has found extraordinary success compared to its counterparts. 3:10 to Yuma, the western remake starring Christian Bale, Logan Lerman, and Dallas Roberts, jumped into the Netflix top 10 after premiering on the first and has been sitting comfortably in the #4 spot. The film follows a small-time rancher who agrees to help hold a captured outlaw awaiting trial in Yuma. An intense battle of wills follows as the outlaw tries to outsmart the rancher. In addition to Bale, Lerman, and Roberts, 3:10 to Yuma also stars Russell Crowe, Peter Fonda, and Vinessa Shaw, and currently sits at impressive, "certified fresh" scores of 89% from critics and 81% from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Western genre is one of the oldest in cinematic history; 1903s The Great Train Robbery kicked off a style of American storytelling that has grown and evolved over the course of a century. Many of these stories are inherently similar, so it's not unusual to see remakes of some of the most iconic classics within the genre. Films like The Magnificent Seven, True Grit, Ned Kelly, and Rio Lobo spawned new adaptations, so the idea of remaking Delmer Daves 1957 classic 3:10 to Yuma was not particularly egregious. While some remakes have failed to find a reason to replicate perfection, director James Mangold unlocked the central relationship within the story to make his 2007 film even stronger than the original. That is certainly not a statement that can be made lightly considering how influential Daves original film was, but Mangold injected the same emotional complexity, sensitive depiction of masculinity, and heartbreaking...

James Mangold's 2007 remake of the classic Western 3:10 to Yuma is widely regarded as one of the very best modern Westerns thanks to powerful performances from its cast and a gripping story. Streaming on Netflix as of September 2024, 3:10 to Yuma is actually the second remake of Elmore Leonard's short story of the same name. The movie's cast stars Russell Crowe as the notorious outlaw Ben Wade, and Christian Bale as a drought-impoverished Arizona rancher who agrees to transport Wade to a prison train in exchange for enough money to save his ranch and family.
Bale's Dan Evans is constantly at odds with his hot-headed son William (Logan Lerman), who thinks his father is a weak man and a failure. The remake of 3:10 to Yuma features an incredibly impressive cast of stars and character actors. Based on a short story that also inspired a 1957 Glenn Ford and Van Heflin film of the same name, 3:10 to Yuma is a compelling character drama filtered through the lense of a western adventure. The film is largely about Ben Wade, a dangerous criminal in the wild west who is unexpectedly captured. Tasked with bringing him to a 3:10 train departing to a courthouse and potential jailtime is the rancher Dan Evans.
The James Mangold-directed 3: 10 to Yuma is a compelling character study bolstered by strong supporting performances on all sides. This film cast two of Hollywood's most enduring modern stars in the lead roles, and fleshed out the rest of the characters with impressive character actors. It all comes togeter for one of the best western remakes ever, and a strong modern example of the genre.

One of the most critically acclaimed Western movie remakes is coming to Netflix on September 1, as James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma lands on the biggest streaming platform. Based on Elmore Leonard's 1953 story "Three-Ten to Yuma" - whose first movie adaptation in 1957 drew comparisons to Western classic High Noon - the 2007 remake assembled a stunning cast.
Russell Crowe and Christian Bale play men on opposite sides of the moral divide, with Bale's former military man Dan Evans charged with escorting Crowe's murderous gang leader Ben Wade to a train to Yuma Territorial Prison. What follows is a tense 122-minute Western drama, surpassed only by True Grit as the most critically lauded remake of a Western movie. 3:10 To Yuma's arrival on Netflix on September 1 makes it an essential watch for all Western fans.

This week, Lionsgate released — and then promptly recalled — an audacious trailer for “Megalopolis,” an ugly yet undeniably ambitious late-career monstrosity from Francis Ford Coppola.
Normally, trailers come padded with hyperbolic quotes from less-than-credible critics — “quote whores,” we call them — plucked out of context and punched up with exclamation marks.

In the case of “Megalopolis,” the marketing team tried a different strategy. Instead of quoting reviews out of the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate lied.

Its availability on the platform should give it the exposure it deserves, as Mangold's Old West morality tale remains a compelling film that defies the conventions of the genre, 17 years after its release.

One of James Mangold's best films, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, is coming to Netflix very soon.
Not all remakes are bad, as is the case for Mangold's 2007 film, 3:10 to Yuma. The thrilling western starring Crowe and Bale will drop on Netflix on Sept. 1. The film is a remake of the 1957 classic directed by Delmer Daves, which starred the iconic Glenn Ford. 3:10 to Yuma is set in Arizona in the 1800s, centering around infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) and his gang who have caused chaos around the Southern Railroad. When the outlaw is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Bale) who is struggling to make ends meet, agrees to assist in transferring Wade to the "3:10 to Yuma," a train that will take Wade to trial.
