Out of all the characters Stanley Tucci has played in his 40-plus years career, there’s one in particular that he relates to the most.
While making a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show to promote his new Netflix movie, The Electric State, the Oscar-nominated actor was asked by guest host Kal Penn, “Which of your characters is most like you in real life?”
He quickly answered: “Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada! He’s very stylish, and he can be a bit caustic. But he’s got a good heart.”
He playfully added, “I mean, I think I have a good heart.”
Tucci starred alongside Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the 2006 classic as the fashion-obsessed art director at Runway magazine. Throughout the film, he takes Andy (Hathaway) under his wing and helps her navigate working as the assistant to Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep.)

Stanley Tucci has been a chameleonic character actor for four decades, playing a wide range of roles, including many Mafia members. The actor has earned numerous accolades over his career, including six Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing a serial killer in The Lovely Bones. His recent roles include the Oscar-winning Conclave and Netflix's The Electric State, which hasn't been received as warmly by critics.
Since Tucci is of Italian descent, he has received many offers for Mafia roles over his career. Tucci has taken roles as a foot soldier, a don, and a Mafia associate in titles such as Quick Change, Men of Respect, and Billy Bathgate. However, after playing a gangster in 1992's The Public Eye alongside Joe Pesci – who continued to star in Mafia movies like Martin Scorsese's Casino– Tucci grew tired of being...

Casting is an arduous process to ensure the right actor gets the right role, but sometimes, things don’t work out. The chemistry is off with the rest of the cast, the studio needs a bigger name, the director decided the character should have a shaved head but a bald cap killed his parents, etc. Sometimes, however, the reason is truly ridiculous.
[subtitle]5Mark Wahlberg Decided Donnie Darko Should Have a Lisp [/subtitle]
Wahlberg was initially cast as the lead in 2001’s Donnie Darko, but once director Richard Kelly found out his vision for the character included a pronounced lisp, he was out. It’s probably just as well, as Wahlberg was already straining credulity as a teenager in Boogie Nights four years earlier and Jake Gyllenhaal hadn’t yet become Taylor Swift’s most hated ex.
4 Ryan Gosling Changed Too Much for ‘The Lovely Bones’
Wahlberg later benefited from another actor-director misalignment.

Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

Peter Jackson gave us an epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he dropped the ball on this one. Aragorn had a scene so insanely badass that it would’ve put every other moment in the movies to shame. And yet… it never made the cut. Seriously, how do you sideline something that proves the guy was basically a god among men?

Book fans know exactly what’s missing, and let’s just say, it’s a crime against Middle-earth. Jackson nailed a lot, but skipping this feels like a fumble even Sauron would laugh at. Time to talk about what could’ve been.

Peter Jackson is easily recognized for his stunning work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and its spinoff prequel, The Hobbit. However, the filmmaker also had a movie that was not as universally praised.
In 2009, he directed the supernatural drama The Lovely Bones. The star-studded film was based on Alice Sebold's 2002 novel of the same name, starring Saoirse Ronan in the main role as Susie Salmon, in the aftermath of her success in 2007's Atonement. Following a disappointing box office run and negative reception, The Lovely Bones found success on Netflix, debuting at number five in the global Top 10, with 3.3 million views and 4.6 million hours viewed, Tudum reports.

Mark Wahlberg is notorious for playing bad boys. From the early years of his career in films like The Basketball Diaries and Boogie Nights to more recent ventures including Daddy’s Home and Uncharted, the actor’s insane workout regimen has certainly allowed him to put that toned physique to good use in his career. But, he’s also shown his deeper drama range in other movies, such as The Lovely Bones and The Fighter. Both of those worlds collided in 2022 when Wahlberg took on the leading role in the biographical drama, Father Stu. The story essentially follows a bad boy turned priest, a performance that Wahlberg was more than capable of. Also featuring performances from Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Teresa Ruiz (Narcos: Mexico), Cody Fern (The Assasination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) and Aaron Moten (Fallout), the movie is preparing to bless audiences with its February 11 arrival on Max.

As one of the most versatile actors of our time, it's hard to narrow down the Stanley Tucci movie we love best. He's had so many great roles over the years; from Mitchell Garabedian in Spotlight to his most recent appearance as Cardinal Bellini in Conclave, Tucci has seemingly done it all. However, while we might have a hard time picking our favorites, the Academy Award-nominated actor recently revealed which role of his remains one of his greatest, and it might surprise you.
Speaking with Variety about his award-winning religious thriller, Tucci was asked which movies of his – in his mind – have stood the test of time. While he picked a few classics such as The Lovely Bones, Julie and Julia, and The Devil Wears Prada, he also commented that his role in Captain America: The First Avenger is one he still loves to this day.

It’s been 15 years since Stanley Tucci picked up his first Oscar nomination for “The Lovely Bones”; now, the character actor is back in the awards conversation, with his remarkable turn as a liberal cardinal being eyed to become the new pope in the Edward Berger’s “Conclave.”
Distributed by Focus Features, the film tells a fictionalized story about the pope selection process as secrets and alliances are exposed within the Catholic Church, reuniting Tucci with veteran actors Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini.
But it marks his first time working with Berger, who helmed the German-language war film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which netted four Oscars. Tucci describes Berger as a “very straightforward” director, who “has very specific ideas about what to do” without being dogmatic.

An unwritten rule of cinema is that great books very rarely make great movies. It’s not inevitable that a film adaptation of a literary classic will turn out to be a stinker, but plenty do: take Roland Joffe’s disposable and tawdry version of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Brian De Palma’s notorious butchering of Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities, and my personal nadir, Peter Jackson’s mangling of Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones. There are ways of side-stepping the curse of the literary adaptation, of course, a recent example being Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, a picture that kept the title and the location of Martin Amis’s novel...

Is it possible for a franchise to be both underrated and wildly beloved? When it comes to literature for kids and middle grade readers, the answer is a clear "yes." A few massive pop cultural flashpoints aside, modern kid lit seems to be full of super-popular titles that earn millions of young fans but barely register on the radar of adults. Rick Riordan's "Camp Half-Blood Chronicles" appears to be one of these. The books, which center on the sassy son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson, and the friends and rivals he meets at a camp for demigods, have more than 180 million copies in print, according to Disney. However, if you're over the age of 35, you may not have heard of them -- until about a year ago.

Peter Jackson might be a cinematic genius, but even legends can miss the mark sometimes. Case in point: the extended Lord of the Rings scene that turned Aragorn, the noble, brooding hero we all idolized, into a straight-up cold-blooded murderer. Yep, in a moment that didn’t make the theatrical cut (and maybe for good reason), the King of Men took things a little too far.

Peter Jackson is a three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker thanks to his contribution to the complex The Lord of the Rings universe, but not all his projects were major successes. In 2009, he directed a supernatural drama that brought him his first "rotten" score.
Jackson gathered a star-studded cast to adapt Alice Sebold's 2002 novel The Lovely Bones, a supernatural drama that didn't impress the critics or the audience. The Lovely Bones is heading to streaming on Paramount+ starting Dec. 1. Despite its substantial budget, the film didn't manage to win it back.

For Hollywood stars, hearing that a project "went another direction" with casting choices isn't a rare occurrence. Sometimes an actor just isn't the one filmmakers are searching for -- but it's always better when they're told this before the cameras start rolling. Over the years, plenty of projects have ground to a halt because one of its core players just aren't clicking with what's on the page, resulting to an alternative choice taking over.
There are also times, however, when a passing comment or a personal blunder can lead to someone being ejected without question. It not only changes the trajectory of the project, but can also lead another actor ending up with a thriving future that could've been someone else's. Here's a list of box office break-ups that could've resulted in a very different film, leaving the original choice...

The plot of 2009s The Lovely Bones is as heartbreaking as it is harrowing for many reasons, though perhaps the most tragic aspect of all is that it was based on actual events. The Lovely Bones true story comes both from a real murder and the lived experience of author Alice Sebold, who wrote the 2002 novel that director Peter Jacksons supernatural drama is based on. In The Lovely Bones, 14-year-old Susie (Saoirse Ronan) is sexually assaulted and murdered by George Harvey (Stanley Tucci), a serial killer who lives in Susies neighborhood.
Susie spends most of the story of The Lovely Bones as a spirit, unable to do anything but watch as Harvey continues his crimes while her own family is torn apart by grief. While Harvey eventually meets his demise by the end of the movie, the ending is far from cathartic, and it remains an incredibly emotional story without much justice for Susie herself.

Saoirse Ronan has spent much of her youth racking up Oscar nominations, scoring her first bid when she was 13 and her fourth when she was 25. Take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Ronan’s parents were both actors and she was born in The Bronx, New York while her father was studying acting there and working odd jobs. Her parents returned to their native Ireland when Saoirse was three, where she developed her signature accent. She began acting herself at the age of 9 on a few different Irish television programs. Although she missed out on a role in the Harry Potter films, she bounced back with a key part in the 2007 Best Picture contender “Atonement,” which brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

Saoirse Ronan did not expect her off-handed comment on The Graham Norton Show to go as viral as it did, but she thinks it's "wild" and "amazing" that the moment resonated with women the world over. Ronan addressed the video clip's popularity on social media to Ryan Tubridy during The Ryan Tubridy Show on Virgin Radio UK while promoting her new wartime drama Blitz, as reported on by Rolling Stone.
Ronan appeared on the longstanding British chat show on October 25, alongside Gladiator II actors Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal, as well as The Day of the Jackal star Eddie Redmayne. During the conversation, Redmayne brought up a defensive training trick he learned on the set of the TV thriller using your cell phone as a defense weapon which set the men on stage into silly hysterics upon considering the seeming absurdity of using one's cell phone to protect them from an attacker.

Netflix's Woman of the Hour zeroes in on the real-life 1970s serial killer Rodney Alcala, who once appeared on the popular television show The Dating Game in an episode hosted by Cheryl Bradshaw. Alcala is played by Daniel Zovatto, with Anna Kendrick making her directorial debut and starring as Cheryl. The film offers a unique take on the true-crime genre by focusing on survivors instead of the perpetrator's backstory.
In recent years, the true-crime genre has largely shifted towards working to understand the twisted motives of the criminals rather than understanding their victims and survivors. This point-of-view shift has led to criticism of several films and series, notably Ryan Murphy's Monsters franchise, which previously neglected to consult Jeffrey Dahmer's victims' families. There are a number of movies that provide an in-depth look at the aftermath of killers' crimes and the psychological impacts on victims' families.

Readers who regularly follow Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions may have noticed a movie quietly working its way up the ranks in various categories. That movie is “Conclave,” an adaptation of Robert Harris‘s best-selling 2016 novel, which was released nationwide by Focus Features on Friday, October 25. So now seems like a good time to look at which categories “Conclave” can thrive in.
Directed by Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front“), the movie follows Ralph Fiennes‘s Cardinal Lawrence, who has taken on the less than envious task of running the elections to select a new pope after the previous pontiff dies suddenly. Many cardinals are in the running, and some even want Lawrence to take on that lofty role, until someone lurking in the shadows begins revealing dirt on the candidates.

It turns out that “The Devil Wears Prada” just might have put Stanley Tucci’s career in purgatory.
The “Conclave” actor told Vanity Fair that it was difficult for him to find work following the iconic 2006 film. Tucci played a creative director who works for Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly and also helps new hire Andy (Anne Hathaway) assimilate into the corporate fashion world. While Tucci’s character Nigel is technically a supporting role, it’s certainly a standout one. Not that casting directors noticed.

Saoirse Ronan has been leaving audiences speechless since she was very young. From getting nominated for an Oscar when she was 13 years old to starring as the lead in several other Oscar-winning and nominated films, there is no denying that she has a very respected image in the film industry. Saoirse Ronan, the Academy Award-nominated actor in films like Lady Bird, Brooklyn and Little Women, remembers when a very prominent actor was fired days before shooting started on her thriller film, The Lovely Bones. As originally planned, Ryan Gosling would play Ronan's father in the film (despite just a 14-year difference and Gosling being 27), but director Peter Jackson made the abrupt decision to fire Gosling from the movie. Why? An unexpected decision related to... method acting?
The Lovely Bones stars Ronan as Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old student who gets murdered by an unknown stranger. Now in purgatory (or "The In-Between"), Susie tries her best to comfort her family any way she can, but she also helps everyone in finding the murderer who violently took her life. The film was based on Alice Sebold's supernatural drama novel of the same name.

The year was 2007. Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson was set to direct an adaptation of the bestselling Alice Sebold novel "The Lovely Bones." Saorise Ronan would play Susie, the 14-year-old girl who ends up being murdered by a serial killer named George, played by Stanley Tucci. She dies very early on in the movie and spends the rest of the time looking in on her family from the afterlife as they try to both mourn her loss and find her killer. The novel was incredibly popular, especially among women, so it wasn't a massive surprise when former Mickey Mouse-club heartthrob Ryan Gosling was cast as Susie's father, Jack. Sure, the 26-year-old Gosling was a bit young to play the father of a teenager, but fans of his film "The Notebook" would be sure to turn up for "The Lovely Bones."

The actress ended up starring alongside Mark Wahlberg in the Peter Jackson-helmed 2009 film, which followed Ronan’s character, a young girl who was murdered and watches over her family and her killer from purgatory, as her loved ones struggle to heal. Wahlberg played her grieving father after Gosling was fired.
The Lady Bird star recently told host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that while she didn’t get to film with Gosling at the time, they had “done some prep” prior to production starting. “I think I just loved Ryan. And his dog, George, and I was just sad that, you know, he wasn’t going to be around,” she said.

Saoirse Ronan recently appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and remembered the dramatic casting switch that occurred during the making of Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones.” The director originally cast Ryan Gosling as the father of Ronan’s protagonist, but the actor was replaced by Mark Wahlberg just days before filming after Jackson disagreed with Gosling’s decision to gain 60 pounds for the role.
Jackson never started filming “The Lovely Bones” with Gosling, but Ronan revealed the cast had already “done some prep” by the time Gosling got fired. Ronan had bonded with Gosling and was sad to see him ago.
“I think I just loved Ryan and his dog, George, and I was just sad that, you know, he wasn’t gonna be around,” Ronan said. “But I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid, and I’ve spoken to both [Gosling and Jackson] now and it happens.

The Lovely Bones star Saoirse Ronan reflects on Ryan Gosling being fired unexpectedly from the production. The movie is a 2009 adaptation of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel of the same name, directed by Peter Jackson. The film, which explores the afterlife of a murdered girl and her family's struggles to cope with the loss, originally featured Gosling in a pivotal role playing Ronan's father. However, his departure marked a significant shift in the film's development.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Ronan expresses her fondness for Gosling and recalls their collaborative efforts prior to his firing. Ronan pointed out that Mark Wahlberg stepped in to be her father figure in the film, having more personal experience in the role, while Gosling was still young at age 27.
