Toni Collette is an Oscar-nominated actress who has become a favorite of both the art house and mainstream crowd, ably hopping back-and-forth between small scale indie fare and big budget crowdpleasers. Let's take a look back at 14 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia, Collette came to the attentions of American audiences with a star-making turn in "Muriel's Wedding" (1995), which brought her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Comedy/Musical Actress. She reaped her first Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress just four years later for "The Sixth Sense" (1999), a supernatural horror flick that scared up massive box office receipts and critical acclaim.
In addition to her Oscar success, Collette earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006), for which she won the SAG Awards prize for top ensemble. She contended once more at BAFTA for "About a Boy" (2002) and again with...

After the release of 2014’s Annie, in which Cameron Diaz played Miss Hannigan, Diaz took a break from acting. By 2018, when she reunited with her co-stars from The Sweetest Thing for an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she described herself as “retired,” and stayed that way for the next several years — until now. Today sees the release of Back in Action, a straight-to-Netflix feature film that lured Diaz back onto a film set. At an event in October, Diaz explained that she had stepped away from her professional career because she had to “reclaim” her life and that what she was “passionate” about at the time was building her family, but that she agreed to Back in Action to re-team with her Annie co-star: “I couldn’t say no to Jamie.”

Cameron Diaz is one of the most popular comedy and drama actors, and her films grossed billions at the box office. However, the actress stepped out of the spotlight to focus on her family for a decade and her comeback movie is not the success she'd hoped.
Netflix's Back in Action, where she stars with Jamie Foxx, is Diaz's first film in 10 years. The movie premiered on the platform on Jan. 17, and its debut score has just been unveiled. Out of 23 reviews, Back in Action has an abysmal 26% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which might fluctuate as more reviews come in. The audience score is currently not available, as there are fewer than 50 ratings at the time of publishing.

Cameron Diaz is not looking to put a label on her Hollywood return.
The actress, who just made her onscreen comeback with Netflix’s Back in Action following a 10-year hiatus, recently shared with Empire magazine if this means she’s back for good.
“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” she explained. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”
The Charlie’s Angels star, who appeared in numerous rom-coms in the late ’90s and 2000s, also clarified which film genre she wasn’t necessarily looking to revisit. “No more rom-coms, only mom-coms,” she added.

When Cameron Diaz was still in high school, she signed her first modeling contract and appeared in ads for Levi's and Calvin Klein. She became recognizable nationwide when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen Magazine in 1990. Fittingly enough, she was actually 17. Diaz continued to model for a few years and even appeared in a Coca-Cola campaign before successfully auditioning for the role of Tina in Chuck Russell's comedic superhero noir "The Mask" in 1994. The star of "The Mask" was Jim Carrey, then experiencing a massive career upswing, and Diaz was swept up with him, becoming a household name almost immediately.
Diaz almost instantly became a media sensation, and her acting career took off. In the years after "The Mask," Diaz appeared in notable indie dramas like "She's the One," "The Last Supper," and "Feeling Minnesota," all of them with notable co-stars. By 1997, she moved into Hollywood's top tier,...

Once upon a time, streaming rom-coms were a place where young stars like Joey King and Zoey Deutch went to prove their leading lady potential. These days, however, they seem to be a place where Oscar-winning actresses go to woo younger men. Earlier this year, Nicole Kidman romanced Zac Efron in A Family Affair,...

Laura Dern is getting into the Netflix rom-com game after her “Big Little Lies” co-star Nicole Kidman made her streamer debut with “A Family Affair.”
Dern leads the upcoming Netflix feature “Lonely Planet,” hailing from rom-com master Susannah Grant who previously penned “In Her Shoes,” “28 Days,” and “Ever After: A Cinderella Story.” Grant is best known for writing “Erin Brockovich.” She also wrote and directed “Catch and Release,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and partnered with Netflix on co–creating “Unbelievable.”
“Lonely Planet” stars Dern in an “Under the Tuscan Sun”-esque premise, swapping continents from Europe instead for Africa. Liam Hemsworth plays Dern’s boy toy turned soulmate, it seems.
The official synopsis reads: “A reclusive novelist (Dern) arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man (Hemsworth) and what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating,...

Shirley MacLaine is the Oscar-winning performer who has made dozens of movies in her 60-plus year career, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, MacLaine is the older sister of Warren Beatty, proving that acting talent must run in the family. She made her screen debut with Alfred Hitchcock‘s “The Trouble with Harry” (1955) when she was just 21 years old. Her first Oscar nomination came three years later: Best Actress for “Some Came Running” (1958).
MacLaine would compete four more times at the Oscars unsuccessfully: three for Best Actress, once for Best Documentary Feature (“The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir” in 1975). She finally struck gold with James L. Brooks‘ comedic drama “Terms of Endearment” (1983), playing a controlling mother who clashes with her free-spirited daughter (Debra Winger). No one is having as much fun as Toni Collette.
The Golden Globe, SAG Award, and Emmy winner leads mob boss comedy “Mafia Mamma” from director Catherine Hardwicke, marking a reunion since their 2015 film “Miss You Already.” A spoof cross between “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “The Godfather” with a dash of an “In Her Shoes” makeover, “Mafia Mamma” puts Collette in the driver’s seat — not that she needed any permission.
“The experience of making it was the most joyous of my career,” Collette told IndieWire during a recent interview. “It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
The script was sent to Collette during the Covid lockdown, and she immediately thought of Hardwicke. “It just made me laugh so much. I just thought, ‘Man, if this can do this for me at this time, I want to bring this to life.’ I had such a special...

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.

Actor known for Alfred Hitchcock films and “St. Elsewhere” died at 106
Hollywood is in awe of the legendary career of Norman Lloyd, who died this week at age 106 after having worked with everyone from Orson Welles to Judd Apatow to Charlie Chaplin to Alfred Hitchcock.
Karl Malden once referred to Lloyd as “the history of our business,” and it shows in his enormous filmography, in which he worked as an actor, director and producer, not only continuing to work well past age 100 but being willing to share stories and histories with other film fans at screenings of classic films all across town.
“What a career. From Welles to Apatow. #Rip Norman Lloyd,” actor Ben Stiller said in reacting to Lloyd’s death.
“Look up mensch in the dictionary. There’s a picture of Norman Lloyd,” Brent Spiner added.
Lloyd was perhaps best known as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on the long-running ’80s series “St. Elsewhere,...

Norman Lloyd, the Emmy-nominated character actor who worked with Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock before landing major roles in 1980s hits like “Dead Poets Society” and “St. Elsewhere,” has died. He was 106.
A family friend confirmed the news to Deadline.
The New Jersey native, born Norman Perlmutter, got his start in the New York theater scene of the 1930s, much of it federally subsidized through the Federal Theatre Project. Actor, producer and director Norman Lloyd, best known for his title role in Hitchcock’s “Saboteur” and as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on NBC’s “St. Elsewhere” and famously associated with Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater, died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 106.
His friend, producer Dean Hargrove, confirmed his death and said “His third act was really the best time of his life,” referring to the many historical Hollywood retrospectives and events Lloyd had participated in over the past few decades. Lloyd often said his secret to his long and mostly illness-free life was “avoiding disagreeable people,” Hargrove recounted.
Lloyd was hand-picked by Alfred Hitchcock to play the title character and villain in 1942’s “Saboteur,” and it was his character who tumbled to his death from the top of the Statue of Liberty in the pic’s iconic conclusion.

The 78th annual Academy Awards were hosted in 2006 and honored the best films from the previous year in 2005. Some of the films released that year that could have been nominated, but weren't, were: Constantine, An American Haunting, In Her Shoes, and House of Wax . Instead the films that were praised and given the biggest nomination, that in the Best Picture category, were: Capote, Crash, Munich, Brokeback Mountain, and Good Night and Good Luck..

Looking at this list now, there are a few nominees that haven't aged well and probably didn't deserve the praise they received, and there are definitely a handful of other great films that should have been recognized.

The five nominees of the 2005 Supporting Actress lineup represent some of the best performances of an exceptional year for adult drama. Their films range from intimate character studies to politically and morally charged biopics, some with considerable studio backing and some running hot on the indie circuit. Each performer wrangles memorably with their roles, and provide their own distinct examples of what great screen acting looks like. You might pine for some generic diversity between Oscar’s selections, but each of them represents entirely different notions of how an actress and their character can properly support a film. To push against such a lineup seems almost churlish, and yet, we must. For all the credible sixth spots in this category, from Maria Bello in A History of Violence to Shirley MacLaine in In Her Shoes (both of whom you can still vote for on Cláudio's "Almost There: Reader' Choice" poll!

Sister has acquired the television rights to Jennifer Weiner’s novel “Mrs. Everything.”
The book tells a multigenerational tale of two sisters, spanning from the 1950s to the present day. Growing up in 1950s Detroit, Jo and Bethie Kaufman are sisters who, as their lives unfold against the backdrop of Vietnam, the civil rights movement, and women’s liberation, find themselves struggling to honor their truths versus pleasing the world.
Weiner will serve as an executive producer on the project along with Carla Hacken for Paper Pictures and Kate Fenske for Sister.
“Mrs. Everything” was Weiner’s thirteenth novel. In total, her books have sold more than 11 million copies and are in print in 36 countries. Some of her other titles are “Big Summer,” “Who Do You Love,” “All Fall Down,” and “Then Came You.”
This would not be the first time that one of Weiner’s works has been adapted for the screen.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Do you like lists? Well, here’s a doozy. Below is everything coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime in June 2020.
Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.
Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

Toni Collette celebrates her 47th birthday on November 1, 2019. The Oscar-nominated actress has become a favorite of both the art house and mainstream crowd, ably hopping back-and-forth between small scale indie fare and big budget crowdpleasers. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia, Collette came to the attentions of American audiences with a star-making turn in “Muriel’s Wedding” (1995), which brought her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Comedy/Musical Actress. She reaped her first Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress just four years later for “The Sixth Sense” (1999), a supernatural horror flick that scared up massive box office receipts and critical acclaim.

Anna Nicole Smith was once considered for the role of Jim Carrey’s love interest in The Mask.
The model, who died in 2007 at the age of 39, was considered by the film’s director Chuck Russell to star as Tina, the nightclub singer who catches the eye of Carrey’s Stanley in the 1994 film.
Russell, 61, told Variety that Smith didn’t get far in the casting process as he “would have had to read her for the part to get that far.”
“We met,” he said. “Anna was charming and bubbly, but did not have other qualities needed for the role.

Solstice Studios has acquired “Unhinged,” a psychological thriller from “Disturbia” screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and “Warrior” producer Lisa Ellzey. The studio is currently out to directors. The script revolves around an extreme case of “road rage.” It’s the story of a mother whose decision to hit her horn upsets the wrong guy and leads to some very violent consequences.
It’s one of the first projects acquired by Solstice, a newcomer to the studio space. It launched in 2018 with the goal of producing three to five films a year that are geared at global audiences and acquiring an additional two to four films annually. Solstice releases will typically carry budgets between $30 million to $80 million. Major studios are steering clear of films in that price range in favor of making even costlier superhero films, leaving a hole that Solstice would like to fill.

“Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” could bring Cher her lucky seventh Golden Globe nomination. The well-reviewed film has raked in more than $350 million to date. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves to recognize box office hits almost as much as it loves a good comeback story. Cher hadn’t made a move in almost 10 years and makes quite the return to the screen in “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.” Her entrance is via helicopter and she looks smashing in a white suit and wig.
She plays Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep‘s character Donna who travels to the idyllic Greek isle to to support her granddaughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried‘) who is pregnant. Ruby has a dramatic reunion with her ex-lover, Fernando, played by Andy Garcia. That scene, in which they sing, er, “Fernando,” is one of the highlights of the movie.

One of the most celebrated film makers of the last four decades has died. Here’s how the New York Times reported it….
Curtis Hanson, the film director whose adaptation of the James Ellroy noir novel “L.A. Confidential” won him an Academy Award, died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 71.
The death was confirmed by Officer Jenny Houser, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. She said that officers had been called to the house shortly before 5 p.m., and that Mr. Hanson had died of natural causes.
Julie Mann, his business manager, said Mr. Hanson had been struggling for some time with a form of dementia.
Let’s take a look at his long career. His first screen credit is for helping to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s short story in the 1970 American International Pictures’ The Dunwich Horror starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell.

Last night, the cinematic world lost one of its own. Filmmaker Curtis Hanson passed away at the age of 71. The cause of death has been placed as natural causes. Hanson worked in the industry for well over 40 years, writing and directing movies that will stand the test of time. Oscar took notice in the late 90’s when Hanson made what most consider to be his masterpiece with L.A. Confidential, but he was a well known artist before then. He worked steadily on the big screen, also putting out the top notch HBO TV movie Too Big to Fail about five years ago. He will be missed in a big way. Hanson was an Academy Award winner and three time nominee, all for L.A. Confidential back in 1997. That highly regarded crime drama was a tale of corruption in the 1950’s, looking at how very different policemen dealt with enforcing the law.

Curtis Hanson, the Oscar-winning director of films including L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile, and In Her Shoes, has died. He was 71 years old. Hanson was born March 24, 1945 in Reno, Nevada but grew up in Los Angeles. After dropping out of high school, he pursued opportunities as a freelance photographer and editor of the now-defunct Cinema magazine before turning to screenwriting, which bore fruit with 1970's The Dunwich Horror, a Roger Corman-produced fright film that he co-wrote with Henry Rosenbaum and Ronald Silkosky. Hanson subsequently moved to directing with Sweet Kill, a 1973 horror film about a sexually-repressed man who finds gratification in murdering the women he sleeps with. That was followed by a string of other low-budget efforts in multiple genres, including Losin' It, a teen comedy starring a pre-Risky Business Tom Cruise. Though he worked consistently through the '70s and '80s, Hanson wouldn't achieve mainstream recognition until...
