Cameron Diaz is not looking to put a label on her Hollywood return.

The actress, who just made her onscreen comeback with Netflix’s Back in Action following a 10-year hiatus, recently shared with Empire magazine if this means she’s back for good.

“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” she explained. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”

The Charlie’s Angels star, who appeared in numerous rom-coms in the late ’90s and 2000s, also clarified which film genre she wasn’t necessarily looking to revisit. “No more rom-coms, only mom-coms,” she added.

Dern leads the upcoming Netflix feature “Lonely Planet,” hailing from rom-com master Susannah Grant who previously penned “In Her Shoes,” “28 Days,” and “Ever After: A Cinderella Story.” Grant is best known for writing “Erin Brockovich.” She also wrote and directed “Catch and Release,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and partnered with Netflix on co–creating “Unbelievable.”

In Lonely Planet, a reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.

Also starring in the movie are Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni. The film will be released globally on Netflix on October 11.

Academy Award winner Laura Dern stars opposite The Witcher's upcoming new leading man Liam Hemsworth in the new Netflix original romance movie Lonely Planet. Netflix announced the highly anticipated new movie's fall release date on Aug. 27 and released a trio of first look photos.

Lonely Planet will make its Netflix premiere on Friday, Oct. 11, when it begins streaming at midnight Pt. The movie was first announced in April 2022 and written and directed by Susannah Grant, who has written such fan-favorite movies as Ever After, Erin Brockovich, In Her Shoes, and Catch and Release, which she also directed. Grant also previously worked with Netflix on the hit 2019 limited series Unbelievable.

Lonely Planet is billed as a love story set in Morocco. Specifics with regard to its plot are being kept under wraps. Grant is also producing alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, with VP Studio Film Kira Goldberg serving as creative lead for Netflix.

The film continues the creative partnership between Netflix and 3dot, which has thus far produced the streamer’s upcoming thriller series, Anatomy of a Scandal, based on the book by Sarah Vaughan. 3dot entered into a multi-year, first-look film deal with Netflix in 2019, with adaptations of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestseller The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Diane Cardwell’s memoir Rockaway also upcoming.

Showtime has ordered a drama pilot inspired by the life of Rebecca Bender, a national leader on and survivor of sex trafficking, Variety has learned.

The pilot is titled “Coercion.” It hails from Susannah Grant, with Sydney Chandler attached to star. The series picks up with Bender’s escape from the world of sex trafficking after six years, her struggles to return to a “normal” life, and her emergence as a confident, funny and impassioned advocate for justice.

Bender is now one of nation’s foremost experts on sex trafficking and serves as a consultant for federal law enforcement.

But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Hollywood is in awe of the legendary career of Norman Lloyd, who died this week at age 106 after having worked with everyone from Orson Welles to Judd Apatow to Charlie Chaplin to Alfred Hitchcock.

Karl Malden once referred to Lloyd as “the history of our business,” and it shows in his enormous filmography, in which he worked as an actor, director and producer, not only continuing to work well past age 100 but being willing to share stories and histories with other film fans at screenings of classic films all across town.

“What a career. From Welles to Apatow. #Rip Norman Lloyd,” actor Ben Stiller said in reacting to Lloyd’s death.

Norman Lloyd, the Emmy-nominated character actor who worked with Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock before landing major roles in 1980s hits like “Dead Poets Society” and “St. Elsewhere,” has died. He was 106.

A family friend confirmed the news to Deadline.

The New Jersey native, born Norman Perlmutter, got his start in the New York theater scene of the 1930s, much of it federally subsidized through the Federal Theatre Project. He became a charter member of Orson Welles and John Housman’s Mercury Theatre, where he played the prophetic Cinna the Poet in an acclaimed 1937 production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.”

Lloyd first broke out on the big screen playing a Nazi spy in Hitchcock’s 1942 thriller “Saboteur,” then returned as a psychiatric patient in 1945’s “Spellbound” with Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck. Hitchcock later hired Lloyd as a director and associate producer on his 1950s anthology TV series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

His friend, producer Dean Hargrove, confirmed his death and said “His third act was really the best time of his life,” referring to the many historical Hollywood retrospectives and events Lloyd had participated in over the past few decades. Lloyd often said his secret to his long and mostly illness-free life was “avoiding disagreeable people,” Hargrove recounted.

Lloyd was hand-picked by Alfred Hitchcock to play the title character and villain in 1942’s “Saboteur,” and it was his character who tumbled to his death from the top of the Statue of Liberty in the pic’s iconic conclusion.

Their films range from intimate character studies to politically and morally charged biopics, some with considerable studio backing and some running hot on the indie circuit. Each performer wrangles memorably with their roles, and provide their own distinct examples of what great screen acting looks like. You might pine for some generic diversity between Oscar’s selections, but each of them represents entirely different notions of how an actress and their character can properly support a film. To push against such a lineup seems almost churlish, and yet, we must. Sister has acquired the television rights to Jennifer Weiner’s novel “Mrs. Everything.”

The book tells a multigenerational tale of two sisters, spanning from the 1950s to the present day. Growing up in 1950s Detroit, Jo and Bethie Kaufman are sisters who, as their lives unfold against the backdrop of Vietnam, the civil rights movement, and women’s liberation, find themselves struggling to honor their truths versus pleasing the world.

Weiner will serve as an executive producer on the project along with Carla Hacken for Paper Pictures and Kate Fenske for Sister.

“Mrs. Everything” was Weiner’s thirteenth novel. In total, her books have sold more than 11 million copies and are in print in 36 countries. Some of her other titles are “Big Summer,” “Who Do You Love,” “All Fall Down,” and “Then Came You.”

This would not be the first time that one of Weiner’s works has been adapted for the screen.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.

Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.

Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.

To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

HBO Max launches May 27 with a whole lot of content ready to stream immediately. But throughout the nascent streamer’s first month, even more titles will be added, from HBO Max originals like “Adventure Time: Distant Lands Bmo,” to old favorites like “Amelie,” “Black Beauty” and “The Bucket List.”

Other brand-new HBO Max originals include the third season of comedy “Search Party,” and the second seasons of “Doom Patrol,” and “Esme & Roy,” all coming June 25, and on June 18, the second season of “Summer Camp Island” and the series premiere kids competition series “Karma.”

Before HBO Max even launches — it goes live May 27 — WarnerMedia is trying to lure new subscribers by revealing what’s coming next month to the streamer.

The June lineup highlights on HBO Max include all 23 seasons of “South Park,” snapped up in a multiyear, $500 million-plus deal; James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic”; and the “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” special featuring lovable robot Bmo.

HBO Max, regularly priced at $14.99 per month (the same as HBO Now), will be available on multiple platforms and distributors through deals including with Apple, Google, Charter, Xbox, PlayStation, and AT&T/DirecTV. As of this writing, however, WarnerMedia has not locked in HBO Max deals with Comcast, Roku or Amazon.

New Max Originals this June include kids’ adventure competition series “Karma,” Season 3 of comedy “Search Party” and the second seasons of “Doom Patrol,” “Esme & Roy” and “Summer Camp Island.”

HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to HBO in January, and everything leaving.

Highlights include “The New Pope,” out Jan. 13. Starring Jude Law, it’s a continuation of the 2016 series “The Young Pope.”

There’s also “The Outsider,” out Jan. 12. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, it stars Jason Bateman, Cynthia Erivo and Ben Mendelsohn.

“Avenue 5,” about a luxury space-traveling company, is out Jan. 19, along with season 10 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Exclusive: Lisa Ellzey, the longtime film exec who has worked at Scott Free, Fox and Lionsgate and most recently as president of U.S. production at Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, has joined Solstice Studios as Head of Production. She will report to Solstice president and CEO Mark Gill.

The hire comes as Ellzey most recently produced Unhinged, Solstice’s Russell Crowe-starring psychological thriller directed by Derrick Borte. The pic shot over the summer, with a U.S. theatrical release set for August 28, 2020.

As an Evp at Lionsgate, Ellzey was an executive producer of Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. Anna Nicole Smith was once considered for the role of Jim Carrey’s love interest in The Mask.

The model, who died in 2007 at the age of 39, was considered by the film’s director Chuck Russell to star as Tina, the nightclub singer who catches the eye of Carrey’s Stanley in the 1994 film.

Russell, 61, told Variety that Smith didn’t get far in the casting process as he “would have had to read her for the part to get that far.”

Solstice Studios has acquired “Unhinged,” a psychological thriller from “Disturbia” screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and “Warrior” producer Lisa Ellzey. The studio is currently out to directors. The script revolves around an extreme case of “road rage.” It’s the story of a mother whose decision to hit her horn upsets the wrong guy and leads to some very violent consequences.

It’s one of the first projects acquired by Solstice, a newcomer to the studio space. It launched in 2018 with the goal of producing three to five films a year that are geared at global audiences and acquiring an additional two to four films annually. Solstice releases will typically carry budgets between $30 million to $80 million. Major studios are steering clear of films in that price range in favor of making even costlier superhero films, leaving a hole that Solstice would like to fill.

She plays Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep‘s character Donna who travels to the idyllic Greek isle to to support her granddaughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried‘) who is pregnant. Ruby has a dramatic reunion with her ex-lover, Fernando, played by Andy Garcia. That scene, in which they sing, er, “Fernando,” is one of the highlights of the movie.
